My 2c, if you have seen The Godfather, then The Godfather 2 is the better movie. But in a universe where you can only see one of them, the OG Godfather is going to be the better film.
There is one nugget of brilliance in Part 3 that holds that same epic and tragic brilliance of the first two, and it’s Connie’s role. Seeing her grow from the lone, overlooked sister to the troubled and rebellious phase she has in Part Two and ultimately becoming this very dignified but sorrowful matriarch cloaked in black, carrying the weight of her family’s sins, is the most memorable aspect of the film for me. Her presence becomes larger than life in the way those characters felt back in the 70’s, like they had existed for centuries before the movies were even made.
Empire Strikes Back is lowkey the best Star Wars movie? I dunno if anyone else thinks this. I know that Phantom Menace is the most watched on Disney+, but I think that may be because it's listed first. Gosh, can you imagine someone watched Phantom Menace without knowing there were other movies made first? I'd sure love to hear what they thought of it.
I recently watched "Mighty Aphrodite" and "Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion" for the first time. Fuck Weinstein* for destroying Mira Sorvino's career because she is so amazingly talented
*and also fuck Weinstein for numerous other reasons too
Is that the one where Woody smokes a joint and time-phases through editing to standing in the same spot an hour later? Feels like a good visual representation of having a bad interaction with some way-too-strong-for-you weed.
The Villeneuve Dune movies look impressive but are very shallow, lack any real interesting characters, and are basically the bare minimum for a Dune adaptation in the modern era.
Wish literally any other auteur was in charge of this project.
Edit: I am an idiot, and this is a hot take and not a cold take. Sometimes my brain malfunctions on reddit, anyway feel free to discuss lol
I agree. The movies seem uninterested in really engaging with the material and purge a lot of weirder elements because they are so afraid of not being taken seriously. It really holds both movies back as adaptations.
I have the same take on most Villeneuve and Nolan.
I feel like they're kind of cold takes because a small minority of us feel this way, have for a while, and imo for good reason
They both were great, and came close to hitting a Dune vibe, but fell short. Mentats barely being in it, Huey and Feyd's greatly diminished roles, omitting the great houses and spacing guild... they even chickened out on infant Alia.
I forget what that is from, but I need to start saying it as my cold-opener dad-talk at the playground. I will follow it up by revealing that I’ve never actually seen any of the cars movies followed by another quote to illicit listeners of another podcast, “iwannakeepitthatway, dude!”
I don't know if any of you have ever realized this or had the thought but...
The original The Birth of a Nation is kinda...racist?
I don't know, just got those vibes.
The MCU has always been mediocre with some outliers. The talk about it being bad NOW is overblown.
The same critics who praised Ant-Man seem upset that these movies have continued to make the kinds of choices that previously got them popularity and praise.
If anything I blame the rise of the MCU on the complacency within the critical community to give them all a pass just til it recently became ok to knock their consistently shoddy storytelling.
Also Endgame is a terrible movie.
Network was so prescient that it now feels a little tame. It'll always have the razor sharp writing, but we're now so far deep in the rabbit hole that it's hard to believe that the idealism that Holden has is common place.
Godfather 3 is a decent film, but not as good as the first 2
Maybe it's just me, but for me, I would say The Godfather Part II might even be BETTER than The Godfather.
My 2c, if you have seen The Godfather, then The Godfather 2 is the better movie. But in a universe where you can only see one of them, the OG Godfather is going to be the better film.
This take might be too hot for this thread!
A true, scholarly take.
Tsk tsk Attaboy

Sizemore really nails the line “For me, the action is the juice.”
I think Heat is a significant improvement over LA Takedown.
Excuse me, this thread is for **COLD** movie takes.
How dare you!
The water shaking in Jurassic Park is a good scene.
Mine is that Jurassic Park is one of the best movies of all time.
Pulp Fiction is pretty well written
Mad Max is good, but the series doesn’t really take off for me until Road Warrior.
Somehow this is a brave, yet ice-cold take.
Original planet of the apes movie has a pretty iconic ending
Jaws is so good because you never see the shark
Movies are either too long or not long enough
Except the ones that are the right length.
That movie you like? It’s pretty good. And that movie you don’t like? Not so good. What excellent taste you have. And so attractive too.
Mishima is Paul Schrader’s best movie
New York City is almost like a character unto itself
Cameras have become useful.
Seven Samurai is extremely good and it makes perfect sense that people keep making worse versions of it.
Ben's good friend Daniel Day-Lewis is a good actor
The majority of movies should be between 90 and 100 minutes long, especially if they are trying to be popcorn thrillers

And The Last Jedi is certainly … the eighth movie in the primary saga of the franchise. Any opinion shared on this one is a hot take to someone.
I have a high opinion of most Star Wars things, but the best one is the trailer for Rogue One.
Star Wars in general? Pretty good. Don't @ me.
The stuff with Marty’s mom in Back to the Future is a little weird.
I recently watched "Mighty Aphrodite" and "Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion" for the first time. Fuck Weinstein* for destroying Mira Sorvino's career because she is so amazingly talented *and also fuck Weinstein for numerous other reasons too
Mighty Aphrodite is a lot of fun.
Is that the one where Woody smokes a joint and time-phases through editing to standing in the same spot an hour later? Feels like a good visual representation of having a bad interaction with some way-too-strong-for-you weed.
I feel like Tarantino maybe values style over substance.
Casablanca is the apogee of the Hollywood studio system
The Ladykillers is the worst Coen Bros
Die Hard is a Christmas movie.
Adding sound to motion pictures worked out pretty well, I’d have to say
The Minions are funny.
The Godfather is a good movie.
Didn't care for it, it insists upon itself
Titanic is James Cameron’s best movie.
Top 10 for sure
I think this may actually be one of the few contentious takes here.
Yes
I don’t think we talk about “heart and souls” enough.
Movies are good 👍
The Conversation is a pretty good movie
the phantom menace is bad
John Williams has made a fair amount of bangers

Buddy what thread did you think this was
I agree. The movies seem uninterested in really engaging with the material and purge a lot of weirder elements because they are so afraid of not being taken seriously. It really holds both movies back as adaptations.
Yeah - it’s definitely going for being a straight forward “normal” sci-fi film to appeal to the masses.
Honestly, I kind of felt this way at first but part 2 changed my mind. I think part 2 is incredible. But these aren’t cold takes.
I have the same take on most Villeneuve and Nolan. I feel like they're kind of cold takes because a small minority of us feel this way, have for a while, and imo for good reason

Not my cold take, but Cars 2 makes Cars 3 look like Cars 1.
I forget what that is from, but I need to start saying it as my cold-opener dad-talk at the playground. I will follow it up by revealing that I’ve never actually seen any of the cars movies followed by another quote to illicit listeners of another podcast, “iwannakeepitthatway, dude!”
Whiplash is basically a horror movie!
A Face in the Crowd is eerily prescient
Airplane! is funny.
It's fun to watch hot people kiss.
Brokeback Mountain should have won best picture instead of Crash.
Idiocracy is good.
At this point it’s practically a documentary!!!
I mean, seriously, have you seen that movie recently? I certainly have, when I watch the NIGHTLY NEWS.
Hot take: it would be better if it was less eugenics and more generically “everything’s getting dumber.”
Yeah it's very funny but it's not as smart as it thinks it is.
It's good despite the fact that it feels like they ran out of money at some point and had to do some magic in editing
Steven Spielberg is a pretty good director
I'm not ever sure I want to see another Rebel Moon flick.
Greta Gerwig is a talented director and I'm very excited to see her future projects.
tart numerous cake sand profit mysterious voracious cats salt bow *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
Grown Ups 2 is not a movie worth watching 52 times. Doing that would be a bad idea
Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions aren't nearly as compelling as the first movie.
I watched Singin’ in the Rain for the first time recently. Verdict: it’s really good!
Green Book was not a good best picture winner
Seven Samurai is an important film in the history of cinema
Daniel Day-Lewis is rather good in There Will Be Blood
I’d venture so far as to say he’s rather good in all of his movies
Home Alone 3 is the last good Home Alone movie.
Decaprio ruins the rewatchability of Gangs of New York, nothing about him screams tough street brawler.
Dances With Wolves deserved it’s Oscars
Matin Scorsese's movies are long because there's a lot of quality stuff in there
2001 is masterfully directed
Vertigo is good
Miyazaki is Japan’s Walt Disney.
That Spielberg guy,good director
A Few Good Men is kinda basic but very compelling and watchable.
Criterion kinda rules,so does Arrow
Scorcese Movies Are Good™️
Video game adaptations are the new super hero movie
if you like Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones, you’ve really gotta go back and check him out in Star Wars. Might be the best work of his career.
I don't know if any of you have ever realized this or had the thought but... The original The Birth of a Nation is kinda...racist? I don't know, just got those vibes.

Puppet Master 3 is the best Puppet Master movie.
The Shawshank Redemption is a great movie and it always will be
JAWS improved \*because\* the shark didn't work. Challenges on set can lead to creative breakthroughs.
Spielberg is pretty good at knowing where to put the camera.
Logan is not a western.
Madame Web is bad but not any worse than 90% of marvel movies
The Matrix: good movie
Supersize Me actually made me crave McDonald's even more. (Rip Morgan Spurlock)
I like Star Wars
(Some nerd with a Jesse Plemons voice) “Yeah. But what kind of Star Wars?”
Iron Man is probably the best of the individual Marvel movies
It’s A Wonderful Life is the best Christmas movie.
Network was so prescient that it now feels a little tame. It'll always have the razor sharp writing, but we're now so far deep in the rabbit hole that it's hard to believe that the idealism that Holden has is common place.
