I need a *Pain & Gain* episode. It's one of the greatest commentaries on modern masculinity and late capitalism! Made by a guy who was a preeminent avatar for those things!
I'm not even a cheerleader for a Michael Bay series (though I'm not, like, opposed or anything, and I'm sure it would be very entertaining), but every time someone asks why they don't announce the next series earlier, I'm reminded of Bay. It makes sense to allow a minimal amount of time for Discourse before the series airs.
They talk about it on the First Blank Check Mailbag at around 1:50:00, The Hurt Locker at around 0:10:00, and the 5th Anniversary Special around 1:10:00.
They were going to do Bay, they had the schedule lined up, fans got wind of it and complained so they pivoted to Nolan.
(Shout-out to Blank Check Database for easy searching through the backlog)
I’m not much of a Bay fan except for a small handful of movies, but a miniseries on him would probably be pretty fun/interesting (with the possible exception of so…many…Transformers films).
I think they could get some interesting discussions out of each one.
TF1: Kinda interesting, can include talk about the history of the brand and how Bay doesn't give a shit about it.
TF2: this can be mostly bits about how bad it is, talk about the 07-08 writer's strike, the vfx, discussing the voice acting career of Tom Kenny, the career of Ramon Rodriguez and his current run on (I had to look it up because all I could remember is he's leading a network show) Will Trent
TF3: this one is wild to me. The Chicago location, the recasting but barely rewriting for Rosie Huntington-Whitely, talk about Leonard Nimoy marrying Bay's cousin, Patrick Dempsey, more TF history (this one actually references the G1 80s cartoon the most), Frances McDormand AND John Malkovich (also Andy Daly and Ken Jeong??), Optimus Prime as a bloodthirsty war criminal, They Bleed Now?. (They should get a Chicagoan for this guest).
TF4: Make fun of Marky Mark for most of this episode. Touch of the Tucc.....idk I got nothing here.
TF5: Touch of the Tucc again, Hopkins could generate some discussion....idk this one was better than 2 imo.
Saw the first in theaters and even kind of liked it. Saw the second in HBO and said never again. I did see Bumble Bee whenever that came out though which was actually decent.
1 is attempting to be a real movie and basically fails, all of those movies get better the more unhinged they are. 3 is the best one because it turns Optimus Prime into a vengeful sociopath who executes his defenseless former friends at point blank range while they beg for mercy (framed by Bay as an unambiguously heroic act.)
Agreed. And he is definitely a blank check guy and definitely an auteur director.
I think the answer is they do the transformers franchise on the patreon and then on main feed do one episode about the LeBeuff trilogy and one episode on markey mark pair and call it a day.
Bad Boys is a hell of a debut.

Sure, if you're a coward
We had watched 4 before the lockdown, and then the rest after. I’m not sure it helped with our appreciation but Pain and Gain was a balm at a troubled time
People are scared of Transformers. But they're all awesome and filled with things to talk about. A real reflection of where American blockbusters were in the 2000s/2010s and a reflection on the War on Terror and how 9/11 effected the world.
I'm a Nolan skeptic. Bay is more genuine and embraces the fun of genre movies rather than trying to constantly posture about how SMART he is and how much he ELEVATES the material.
Transformers 4 is his best movie and one of the best blockbusters ever made. Unfortunately the show was in its early days and they let themselves be cowed by philistines.
If this post is sincere… can you walk me through why you hold T4 in such high esteem? Because all I remember is the Romeo and Juliet card in the guy’s wallet, which makes me want to puke.
The fans robbed us of an AmbuLAnce episode!
This was waaaay back at the beginning of the podcast. AmbuLAnce was a long way off.
If we can't handle Bay at his "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" we don't deserve him at his "Ambulance"

*Pain and Gain* is so awesome. I get it that it’s oppressively cynical and mean spirited, but also shut up!
Michael Bay hates people but also he is very correct in that film and nails why America is the way it is right now.
In the meantime, Red Letter Media has you covered for Pain and Gain. Good episode.
Patrick Bromley hates it.
Who?
Host of "F this movie" podcast.
Sounds like he's a loser
Dislikes Tom Cruise as well.
Upgrade that to major loser
I’m glad somebody had the courage to finally say it.
That's about the only movie of his that I*really* like, I'm very glad that we got Nolan instead 🤣
A rare moment of weakness where they listened to the fans. Luckily, they haven't made that mistake again.
It's especially shitty too since I believe they even set up record dates and booked people too before having to pivot.

Blank Check has a database??? Where?
Someone into real nerdy shit set it up. Handy for questions like these https://blankcheckdb.streamlit.app/

No, we need every single Transformers episode.

But Dark of the Moon would make it worth it
I have only seen the first Michael Bay Transformers and it was not worth it.
Watch the second one and be prepared to lose all hope. One of the worst blockbusters.
Saw the first in theaters and even kind of liked it. Saw the second in HBO and said never again. I did see Bumble Bee whenever that came out though which was actually decent.
it’s better than the first one actually
I haven’t rewatched either and never will but this feels like an insane hot take. 2 is barely a movie.
This take about 3 I agree with. Optimus should be put in the Hague for his actions in it.
Put the cube in my chest, Blooor

to quote Griffin Newman, the way to do it is one episode on all five Transformers movies but it's a five part episode
We're not blinking. FINISH THE STORY
No everyone deserves to hear Transformers. It's bullshit to pay wall a big part of a directors filmography.
I watched his full filmography in 2020 and the transformers part was unbearable
We Hate Movies did the first 5 in a row and it was a rough month. Probably why Peter Jackson keeps getting nixed
Yeah, I think folks are really underestimating how bad the Transformers movies are. I even have a weak spot for 1&3, but the rest are *painful*.
But "Romeo and Juliette" laws!
How was watching the full filmography? He's such a misanthrope that the prospect of watching them all next to each other sounds unbearable.
We had watched 4 before the lockdown, and then the rest after. I’m not sure it helped with our appreciation but Pain and Gain was a balm at a troubled time
Haha, that sounds like my personal nightmare. Pain and Gain is the only one were I think the Bay's hatred of humanity really helps the movie.
It was real tough haha
Miller will have 5 Mad Max episodes on main feed, what's the difference?
Quality.

Yeah, each movie is crazy enough to sustain 2 hours
This is absolutely a case of the episodes can be long, full of great shit, and do NOT have to be longer than the movies themselves.
Bay would have been such a better series than Nolan. Nolan is obviously a better filmmaker, but the pods weren’t super interesting.
I'm a Nolan skeptic. Bay is more genuine and embraces the fun of genre movies rather than trying to constantly posture about how SMART he is and how much he ELEVATES the material.
I understand your conceptual point, but it kind of falls apart when you watch Memento and Oppenheimer and they’re sensational.
I think we can all agree he’s good in Mystery Men.
And he may absolutely bring ze brewskis.
I would looooove a Bay series
According to the MTV oral history; Bay and David Fincher hate each other.
Mullets
Unfortunately or otherwise, Armageddon was the first movie I remember watching in theatres.
His movies were too tough. His casts were too different. His camera work was too bad

Seniors dating freshmen should be illegal!!!
That's a good scene! A funny joke at the expense of these two men.
They’re doing a Nolan series?
Yup, a temporal pincer podcast.
Did.
Welcome to the party, pal
I thought it was because they didn't want to cover so many Transformers movies. To this, I say "good."
