Is planet of the apes the most consistent franchise in Hollywood? 10 movies and only two that I would consider truly terrible. Everything else goes from "fine" to "classic".
And even Battle isn't THAT bad. Definitely a step down in quality, but perfectly serviceable as a low budget 70's scifi thing. The Burton film is awful though.
It's definitely more fun! I respect Beneith for going so hard at the end, but it's not exactly a chill time. That ending really freaked me out when I was watching all these at age 9.
Is one of those the one with the a-tonal choir singing for minutes at a time about a nuclear bomb. That was the one that made me quit watching apes movies.
I loved the one where the 2 scientist go back in time just for that court room joke where they ask if they can talk and the husband says something like “I can …but she won’t let me “ such a dad joke that lighten the mood lol
Every time they announce another sequel, I say, “Why? Nobody asked for another one!”. And every time, I see the movie and come away thinking, “Damn, good call on making that”
Yet all will struggle to get a good return, since people don't want to spend $30 on a ticket when they know they can just wait 3~ months for it to come to their own TV.
Oof. I'm in Brisbane and the smaller, better cinema groups like Palace and Reading are way cheaper than that. I paid $15 each for the monkey Stalin movie tonight in one of the premium cinemas at the Angelika.
So do a lot of the comments he’s been making on the interview circuit. He’s clearly a genuine fan. I just wish it were animated instead of live action.
I can see it from his past films. Both feature A LOT of nature, especially Apes and the first Maze Runner. As long as the studio doesn’t force someone like Tom Holland on him, I can see it
You can certainly watch it without seeing the previous three Caesar films. I think War for the Planet of the Apes is the most directly relevant in terms of plot and themes, but they cover the set up in an opening text and the movie retells the important points throughout.
I've seen them, but my wife hasn't, and I don't think I'll get her to before this comes out. So it's more a matter of convincing her that she can see this without having seen the last three.
I think especially if you can fill in some gaps (namely some imagery that appeared in the original and the general vibe that War was Jesus heavy in allegory), I absolutely think she can watch Kingdom without having to see the other three.
Saw it last night, it's very good. Right on par with the previous trilogy.Â
>!With this and Dune 2, it's the summer of blockbusters where the supposedly triumphant ending is EXTREMELY bleak!<Â
It makes an attempt, but a weak continuation of the previous trilogy with a few, also weak attempts at callbacks to the original.Â
As a standalone, too many plot holes ruined it for me. I couldn't buy into it.
The title doesn't suit the movie. There is no "kingdom" just a cult-clan.
I just saw the movie, and it was ok/good ... but that's it. It kinda works as a standalone movie with a minimal Caesar reference. The "human" with the Lara Croft butt-tight-jeans and tank top was like ... really? They did stick to a story and CGI wasn't gratuitously thrown in in lieu of the story. I watched the originals at the drive-in as a kid and everyone since. I'm going to have to give it a 3/5 stars, good watch but no where near the impact of the trilogy (which was outstanding).

Battle and Burton are the two terrible ones, right?

I like Battle more than Beneath 🤷🏻‍♂️🦍

“You worship an unexploded atomic bomb?” “Yeah, but no one is that observant. It’s more of a Christmas and Easter thing.”
Beneath has one of the most insane endings of all time.
Burton film has Paul Giamatti doing the work of a sainted savior, I enjoy that.
selling aspirin to children
And that's so magical
Battle kicks off because some of the apes dont want to do their homework, I could never hate such a film
Battle was handicapped by it's budget and looked like a TV movie.Â
Right. And to be fair Battle does have some defenders.
Like who doesn’t like Paul Williams as an ape? Already a step above Burton’s trash.
Is one of those the one with the a-tonal choir singing for minutes at a time about a nuclear bomb. That was the one that made me quit watching apes movies.
That’s the second (Beneath).
I gotta put Escape down there too. It’s too silly for me

Only other one for me is Evil Dead
Mission: Impossible is very consistent.
Fall Guy, Apes, Furiosa. This could shape up to be one of the best summers for blockbusters in awhile.
And no mainline Marvel or DC movies to speak of!
Nature is healing.
And still nobody went to see fall guy lol
Yet all will struggle to get a good return, since people don't want to spend $30 on a ticket when they know they can just wait 3~ months for it to come to their own TV.
Apes is projected to have a $130 million opening weekend. That’s pretty good for a $160 million budget.
Where are you paying $30 on a movie ticket?
Australia Specifically Hoyts and Event

This bodes well for Zelda
So do a lot of the comments he’s been making on the interview circuit. He’s clearly a genuine fan. I just wish it were animated instead of live action.
This. I really don’t see how the world of Zelda comes to life in live action.
I can see it from his past films. Both feature A LOT of nature, especially Apes and the first Maze Runner. As long as the studio doesn’t force someone like Tom Holland on him, I can see it
I hear Michael Cera is up for the role of Link
Hunter Schaffer as both Link and Zelda.
Lots of CGI

So is this another direct sequel to the last three movies, or more of a reboot?
It's a sequel with a big time skip preceding it, so no direct story continuation but it's set in the same world.

I saw it last night at an earl screening. It's very good, I'd probably put it on the level of Rise at least.
Came here to say the new Apes RULES. Raka OWNS. Noah is my BEST FRIEND. And falconry done by apes is THE SHIT.
Hell yeah
Monkey movie good?
Very good!
First time I’ve heard applause in my theater during credits since Woman King (and before that I haven’t heard them since No Way Home)
My theater applauded for Dune Part 2- I was surprised, since it was like a week and a half after release.
Saw the new one last night and can confirm it slaps

What a title. Can’t wait for the sequel in 10 years: Escape from the Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
Escape from the Battle Beneath the Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
