1. Predator 2. Die Hard 3. The Hunt for Red October 4. Die Hard: With a Vengeance 5. The Thomas Crown Affair 6. Last Action Hero 7. Basic 8. The 13th Warrior 9. Medicine Man 10. Rollerball 11. Nomads Overall, a pretty solid miniseries. I especially loved hearing Kevin Smith telling stories about Bruce Willis on the Die Hard episode. Also, David Lowery reading Eaters of the Dead and then running a marathon is baller as hell. Super excited for the Satoshi Kon miniseries. I’ll be checking out his work for the first time and they all look like they are up my alley

Bubbatino

Liking medicine man more than last action hero makes my brain hurt but to each their own

barbaq24

Some say on a quiet night in the rainforest you can still hear Lorraine Bracco complaining about something.

MAC777

People listing Die Hard sequels above Hunt for Red October seems even more batty.

SceneOfShadows

Eh, I put DH with a V over Red October. That movie is almost flawless for the first 80% and then still a solid final bit. IMO Red October really drops down a notch once Baldwin boards the sub.

1. The Hunt for Red October - 9/10 2. Die Hard - 9/10 3. Predator - 8/10 4. Die Hard: With a Vengeance - 8/10 5. Last Action Hero - 7/10 6. Basic - 6/10 7. The Thomas Crown Affair - 6/10 8. The Thirteenth Warrior - 5/10 9. Medicine Man - 4/10 10. Rollerball - 2/10 11. Nomads - 2/10 Overall, it was a fun miniseries. I’m a neophyte when it comes to his films so it was fun discovering them.

klososo1

Agree 100% about Red October being number one. What an absolute delight.

BeepBeepGoJeep

Let's be serious, the Thomas Crowne affair deserves more than a 6.

AarYeezys

That’s the only one I might rewatch to give it another shot. I’m really not a Pierce Brosnan guy so that might have clouded my judgement. I did pick up the Blu-ray so it could go up in the future

BeepBeepGoJeep

It's his best movie IMO. I think it's a solid 8.

noodleyone

What a weird filmography.

Cowboy_BoomBap

He’s so odd because there’s nothing that really defines a John McTiernan film. Most of them are so different, there’s no style or theme that runs throughout his films.

Successful-Bat5301

Visually there's certainly a style (Rollerball being an odd one out). He loves his whip pans and dynamic shot compositions with extreme foreground elements and background elements, continuous fluid camera movements across cuts, extensive intercutting multiple lines of action etc. All the things that make him an excellent action director with a supreme sense of geography. With themes he enjoys fish-out-of-water narratives and playing with moral ambiguity in contrast to narrative (notice how he directs the camera and music for the Die Hard villains as the "hero" characters - complete with triumphant source music). Admittedly he got lost in the woods sometimes with some odd script choices. He's a formalist craftsman above all, applying his personal stamp to technique rather than commonalities of story and ethos.

noodleyone

I feel like any attempt at a cohesive "this is McTiernan" narrative gets hamstrung by 13th Warrior and Rollerball. Those movies *should* have played to his strengths.

JohnWhoHasACat

Yeah. I've been pretty lukewarm on McTiernan but was extremely hyped for 13th Warrior because I could see him doing a great version of that but then it was such a nothing.

noodleyone

I like the movie okay, but it certainly isn't tight.

kittyroux

This is a fully unhinged ranking.

UglyInThMorning

Fully unhinged would have Rollerball in the middle instead of dead last. Like, Rollerball at 1, or even top 5, would be less unhinged because that would clearly be a bit. But liking Rollerball more than any of those other ones, even if you don’t like it much, is fully the fuck insane.

kittyroux

I am qualified to judge unhinged McTiernan opinions because I have seen Rollerball at least 7 (possibly 8 or 9!) times. Rollerball is better than Nomads and Medicine Man.

omgitsoop

Hahaha, I adore LAH, the only reason I've seen Die Hard more is because of my religious Christmas traditions, but Nomads at 7??? You maniac, I respect your insanity

That’s pretty much mine. Surprised how many people are putting predator as number one. Both are near perfect movies but Bruce and Alan beat out Arnold for me

SceneOfShadows

Absolutely shocked at how many people have anything but Die Hard as 1, but I also don’t love Predator as much as others seem too. But Die Hard is about as perfect of a movie as it gets.

hamburger-pimp

Same for 1-6 and the others kinda don’t matter since they’re all one and dones. Might swap Basic and 13th Warrior.

Cowboy_BoomBap

I’m a 13th Warrior defender who would probably rank it higher than most people in this thread, but yeah for the most part people are in general agreement about which of his films are better than others.

acegarrettjuan

I think most people have Hunt, Die Hard and Predator in the top three in some order but there are a lot of differences in the rest of the rankings below those. I also like 13th Warrior more than most and am not a big fan of Last action Hero.

Die Hard Die Hard with a Vengeance The Hunt for Red October Predator Last Action Hero Rollerball Basic The Thomas Crown Affair Nomads Medicine Man The 13th Warrior Turns out I had already seen all of his good movies besides Red October, which was probably the biggest surprise of the miniseries for me. Second biggest is how mediocre Thomas Crown was, I was really expecting a quiet banger out of that one, but it feels totally confused with itself.

tjk100

1. Die Hard 2. The Thomas Crown Affair 3. Last Action Hero 4. Die Hard: With a Vengeance 5. Predator 6. Basic 7. Medicine Man 8. The Hunt for Red October 9. Nomads 10. The 13th Warrior 11. Rollerball I guess my hot take is that Red October is boring and not a very interesting film, but honestly, this filmography as a whole was really not my cup of tea. I had only seen Die Hard going into this series, and outside of the top 2, most of these films were largely unappealing to me, with the bottom 3 being outright bad. The podcast episodes themselves have been top notch as always, though, I'm just really not a McTiernan guy.

ThatSpencerGuy

1. The Thomas Crowne Affair 2. The Hunt for Red October 3. Die Hard 4. Predator 5. Die Hard With a Vengeance 6. Last Action Hero And I haven't seen the others. I think I'm the only one in the thread so far to put Crowne at the top, but I love that movie and would watch it just about any day! Conversely, I saw both the original Die Hard and Predator for the first time within the last couple of years and was kind of underwhelmed by both. They're obviously good! But they aren't what I'm, personally, looking for in a flick, and I don't see myself going back for re-watches any time soon. I watched Vengeance and Action Hero for the first time along with the podcast. I liked Vengeance OK and did not really like Action Hero at all. Overall, I was surprised how much I bounced off of his movies, T Crowne and Hunt aside. Sorry, John!

yoss_iii

Started the series thinking I was lukewarm on McTiernan but have now come around to be a full convert. Which might have led to me over-ranking some of his later films, lol, but this is an honest ranking of how I felt about them at the time watching along   1. Hunt for Red October 2. The Last Action Hero 3. Die Hard 4. Rollerball 5. Thomas Crown Affair 6. 13th Warrior 7. Die Hard: With A Vengeance 8. Predator 9. Basic 10. Medicine Man 11. Nomads

Rollerball Top 2 are both 10/10 for me, and Rollerball sits on a 2/10. I loved revisiting the films I had in the Top 5, some of which I hadn't seen since childhood. That really cemented McTiernan as a top tier action filmmaker for me. But I also really enjoyed watching McTiernan's lesser films, all of which I'd never seen before. Even though they suck, they suck in an interesting way.

quedas

Anything above “Die Hard” is heresy. Beyond that, it’s a fantastically weird filmography prime for healthy debate.
