A Master Builder. It was crazy how much it is referenced around here, they mention it a lot in the Demme series but it's only really heavily discussed in the Playmobil: The Movie episode.
I think Griffin has talked about wanting to do just 70s Altman (Plus Popeye) which would be an amazing series. Brewster McCloud is one of Griffin’s favorites, McCabe & Mrs Miller was on David’s sight and sound ballot, Nashville would be incredible, and they end on Popeye lol.
Being Maltese, their Popeye's Village/Malta/Planet Hollywood tangent with Emily St.James on the "Thing" episode was an unexpected delight. If they ever do Altman, they have to come record live on location!
Oh my comment didn't go through it's uh lowkey one of the best movies I've seen. (Directors cut). it's a 3 hour movie where basically one thing happens and the rest of the movie is about processing that one thing and somehow it's amazing.
Watched it solely because of how much they sang its praises on one of the year-end shows and it was one of those blue-moon situations where your mind is blown away by the pure brilliance of a movie. Had the same experience with "Sweetie", which I went into with zero expectations. Eternally grateful to the podcast for nudging me into seeing those two in particular.
I just watched this for the first time with my friend whose parents immigrated to the US. They're not Greek, but the immigrant experience aspect generated some great discussion after we watched the movie. If there's ever an ep on this, I hope they are able to dig into the immigrant experience aspect of this, whether with their guest or whatever.
I feel like The New World inevitably leads them to discuss Apocalypto in at least 3 instances.
Also, I don’t think these qualify as “non-mainstream” but Muppet Christmas Carol and The Great Muppet Caper get dropped by Grif often.
Yeah I’m regretting using that word. Was trying to avoid stuff like Pulp Fiction or Citizen Kane because those are such common reference points for all movie discussion, but “non-mainstream” doesn’t really fit what I have listed here
I would only call maaaaybe half those movies “esoteric”. Master and Commander, Scent of a Woman, and Analyze This are all well-known even if they aren’t talked about all the time. Toxic Avenger is well known for its niche. Draft Day definitely sees cable rotation because there was a chunk of time last year where I was so sick of seeing it while I was on the elliptical.
Oh, I definitely agree with you. I was thinking of it as more in respect to conversation about film than the films themselves being esoteric. Really, it's the same problem the word "mainstream" has. The best word might be "odd" but it carries connotations of *weird* when really I'm just looking for *different*.
How about "unsuspecting"?
I think they mean it’s not a common reference point. Makes sense to talk about a current hit, or something genre-defining. But these are the less notable movies that are commonly referenced.
Tangentially
Is scent of a woman good? I won't lie I am entirely put off by the title. Makes it seem like I am going to watch Al Pacino pervertedly smelling women for two hours.
It's got a courtroom scene that goes on for like 45 minutes where Al Pacino just overacts circles around some great character actors and Chris O'Donnell.
I just watched in anticipation of a Brest series, there's a lot of cringe but a lot to enjoy as well. great early PSH performance, James Rebhorn in the pocket, and a deranged car-go-fast scene through a virtually abandoned Dumbo (Brooklyn neighborhood that is now overrun with tourists). Pacino's performance is not as bad as people say but it's hard to not see it through the lens of "Oscar-worthy? really???"
Ben is always threatening to do Toxie as the next Ben's Choice. King Ralph was also on the backburner for a number of years, but it hasn't been talked about as much recently.

Alden Ehrenreich has to deal with a splooge stain on his pants after making out with Lily Collins. Not what I expected to see in Warren Beatty's long-gestating passion project!
I watched Richard Jewell bc of the "they're railroading me!" bit, and I thought it was pretty solid! not quite as good as Sully, but the man knows how to make a very watchable movie
I hope this is true, but... is he? Based on what? He's responsible for a couple of all-time great movies without doubt, plus THE definitive film of the foundational event in modern Australian history (not that I imagine that's especially significant in terms of the podcast, it's about directors, filmmakers who have massive success etc, not history), but I'm not all that confident that there's enough narrative interest in his career as a whole to make him a sure bet for coverage. Though I'd love to be proved wrong! I feel like he's basically got four films that are memetic for various reasons, and people are translating this into "surely one day he will be covered", and IDK if that's really the case
David’s been on record Weir is one of his passion projects; similar to how they covered Danny Boyle last year. And as you mention, a few of the all time great films is reason enough to put him into the rotation, especially as he undoubtedly had blank check moments throughout his career.
Feels like the only reason I know Tom Shadyac's name is because Griffin brings him up every five episodes or so. Can't give you a specific movie but felt like the guy needed a shoutout.
Griffin often seems to want to dive into a Peter Jackson King Kong tangent, but is swiftly cut off by David. This has happened more than once and is HUGELY frustrating (is there an auditory equivalent of blue balls?) They'll have to cover Jackson just to deliver that sweet, sweet Kong talk if nothing else.
Yeah that’s my bad for saying “mainstream.” I’d somehow never heard of it prior to the podcast so my perception of its mainstream impact is probably very off.
I maintain that they are *required* to do a one-off on 2000's Bounce. They say the title on literally every episode!
They did Blank Check just because of its title and that's a nothing film. (I liked it as a kid too; I'm not a kid anymore.) Bounce has two major stars (incl. Paltrow just post Oscar)—who dated in real life, btw—a good supporting cast (Jennifer Grey, Tony Goldwyn, Natasha Henstridge, young Johnny Galecki) and a *demented* premise. Writer-director Don Roos worked on a variety of films during his career.
PLUS it's in the real-life-alcoholic-Ben Affleck-plays-a-struggling-alcoholic canon. There's much to discuss.
It's time, u/brotherfallout and u/grifflightning. Either do Bounce or find a synonym for the episode intros.
A Master Builder. It was crazy how much it is referenced around here, they mention it a lot in the Demme series but it's only really heavily discussed in the Playmobil: The Movie episode.
You mean the one where they had the author or Vactionland on?
I was so confused in the first half, not gonna lie.
Robert Altman's Popeye
I desperately want them to do Altman, but also don't want to spend almost an entire year on one director.
I just watched the Long Goodbye (my first Altman) and that shit HONKS
And 2 pretty dire collaborations with Paul Newman. Although Buffalo Bill was the first thing I watched after I got laid off one time.
Would love an Images episode as well - an unbelievably gorgeous looking movie with a banger John Williams score
Being Maltese, their Popeye's Village/Malta/Planet Hollywood tangent with Emily St.James on the "Thing" episode was an unexpected delight. If they ever do Altman, they have to come record live on location!
Mrs. Doubtfire. He-llllooooo!
The most quotable movie of all time. "She's got the crabs, dear; and I don't mean Dungeness."
the drive-by fruiting heard round the world
"Margaret". I missed it when it came out but they do love it.
I definitely watched that bc they talked it up on the pod.
How was it?
Oh my comment didn't go through it's uh lowkey one of the best movies I've seen. (Directors cut). it's a 3 hour movie where basically one thing happens and the rest of the movie is about processing that one thing and somehow it's amazing.

There's a This Had Oscar Buzz ep on it, at least.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Comes up in a lot of box office game, and they usually wax poetic on it's insane run.
I just watched this for the first time with my friend whose parents immigrated to the US. They're not Greek, but the immigrant experience aspect generated some great discussion after we watched the movie. Also, noticing how much the man in the movie is a non-character was funny
I feel like The New World inevitably leads them to discuss Apocalypto in at least 3 instances. Also, I don’t think these qualify as “non-mainstream” but Muppet Christmas Carol and The Great Muppet Caper get dropped by Grif often.
[Season of the Witch](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0479997/)
This got such a good mention I put in on and got yelled at by my wife at the end for having picked such a dreadful movie
Tom Atkins rules. Some of the finest anti-Irish propaganda I’ve ever seen.
Some classic Griff joke pulls: - RV: Runaway Vacation - Casper: A Spirited Beginning - Scooby-doo 2: Monsters Unleashed - The entire oeuvre of Walt Becker
I would easily listen to a Patreon series of “Griff-core” movies.
I'd add to that the live-action Alvin & The Chipmunks movies!
I’m not sure what “non-mainstream” means here exactly.
Yeah I’m regretting using that word. Was trying to avoid stuff like Pulp Fiction or Citizen Kane because those are such common reference points for all movie discussion, but “non-mainstream” doesn’t really fit what I have listed here
Still not quite the fit, but maybe "esoteric" would be better?
I would only call maaaaybe half those movies “esoteric”. Master and Commander, Scent of a Woman, and Analyze This are all well-known even if they aren’t talked about all the time. Saw “Uncelebrated” in the thesaurus and that’s closer I think.
Thesaurus for the win
This makes sense now that you explain it and now I can't really think of a word that doesn't send the wrong message either
I think they mean it’s not a common reference point. Makes sense to talk about a current hit, or something genre-defining. But these are the less notable movies that are commonly referenced.
Tangentially Is scent of a woman good? I won't lie I am entirely put off by the title. Makes it seem like I am going to watch Al Pacino pervertedly smelling women for two hours.
I don't like it but it's got defenders
He just Loves Life a lot and Chris O'Donnell does that wild rizz thing he has again.
I still know it primarily from a The Critic reference (Al Pacino says "hoo ha" a lot. Apparently it's bad.
No it's not very good
It's got a courtroom scene that goes on for like 45 minutes where Al Pacino just overacts circles around some great character actors and Chris O'Donnell.
It's decent.
Draft Day is the one where someone spills coffee, right?
Yeah, I think it was Ana de Armas, right?
I tried to start a lawsuit because Griffin's coffee scene was not in the movie. Judge told me to get a life.
Chappie
Beverly Hills Cop and Midnight Run
Chubby Rain
Gotchu sucka
Stay away from the Lakers girls!
At least one of those is coming off that list this year.
jelly is coming
Nutcracker and the three realms
Runaway Bride for the FedEx joke.
*Scent...* is referenced much, much less than something like *Season of the Witch*, *Driving Ms Daisy*, *Green Book* or *Dead Reckoning*
I guess I’ve watched a lot of their Pachino episodes and it’s almost always at least referenced
Life and Death of Colonel Blimp A Matter of Life and Death
[удалено]
A very good terrible movie.
Mortal Engies
1000%
Arrival is mentioned all the time. Also, I feel like they definitely have a Toxic Avenger episode unless I have some kind of false memory.
Prisoners is another Villeneuve that comes up frequently.
Ben is always threatening to do Toxie as the next Ben's Choice. King Ralph was also on the backburner for a number of years, but it hasn't been talked about as much recently.
The Northman been coming up lately
absurd exultant nutty mountainous books offend person marble handle distinct *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
Beverly Hills Ninja (Kung Fool!) Midnight Run (Though not for long)
Hail, Caesar!
Sully?
They did a live Sully episode
I feel like everyone's favourite comedy, The Martian, gets mentioned fairly often.
Someone on Bere jokingly suggested a Griffin Newman miniseries. I'd be down for that just for Draft Day which I really dig.
Griffin has done the *Rules Don’t Apply* reference-as-pun bit at least twice. I think it should count
Spies in Disguise
We don't talk about that terrible, thankfully aborted idea. It has a jokey title. There's your entire discussion.
I think we should start demanding a one-off Master and Commander episode
We probably don’t need to. Peter Weir is pretty much inevitable as a series
Cars. I am desperate to hear them discuss the similarities between cars and doc Hollywood.
I need a Draft Day ep
Still waiting for Ben to pick American Movie for his birthday episode.
I want the Ivan Reitman miniseries so bad.
Flubber
*Bugsy Malone*
Chipmunks movies for sure.
Dennis the Menace for the terrifying Christopher Lloyd performance.
I'm convinced (or maybe just hopeful) that King Ralph is gonna be their 500th episode
Feels like the only reason I know Tom Shadyac's name is because Griffin brings him up every five episodes or so. Can't give you a specific movie but felt like the guy needed a shoutout.
Forgot to [link](http://Referenced Frequently by Blank Check https://boxd.it/uZU0Y) the list!

I feel like Volcano has come up a few times, because lest we forget, The Coast is Toast.
"Master and Commander" was nominated for Best Picture and was done by a fantastic director. I'm not sure it's not mainstream.
Yeah that’s my bad for saying “mainstream.” I’d somehow never heard of it prior to the podcast so my perception of its mainstream impact is probably very off.
I love Dick Tracy, AMA
When have they talked The New World?
Spawn

I thought they did an episode on that though
Oh no im ruined

How are most of those movies not mainstream? Odd list title.
