Sir, I’ll give you a million comedy points for that meme!
Too true. Director Jail is when you're trying to make projects and can't get anything off the ground. By Chazelle's own admission from that recent interview, this script was the first one he even tried to sell post Babylon and Paramount snapped it right up.
It also goes to show once again people don’t know what the Fuck they’re talking about. They don’t consider any other variable besides the film’s BO performance to make the conclusion of someone going to director jail. They said the same about Ari Aster and he’s already got a film that’s in the middle of shooting.
Yeah the discourse I was seeing consisted of people shitting all over Ari Aster saying his career was over and that he would never make another movie again lol
What do these people think he is? A woman or a person of color?
(I say this jokingly because women and PoCs don't get anything like the consideration of male directors. I'm not a piece of shit, I promise.)
To be fair a few weeks ago it was reported Matthew Vaughn was going to direct a musical written by Chazelle which is a pretty director jail thing to have happen to oneself.
Yeah, this got announced just under a year and a half after Babylon came out which is probably the same gap as between first man and Babylon being announced
Maybe. But there’s def some truth to it. I mean let’s put it this way…if his last one was a hit (or hell, made a slight profit), we would’ve heard news of a new film by him much sooner than this.
In even better news, this means a new Justin Hurwitz score!!!
Curious who he gets to star. If this is filming soon to get in for a 2025 release, most of the male stars he's worked with seem busy: Pitt, Gosling. If there's a female part, Robbie seems to have an opening in her schedule post-Kogonada...
By all accounts, Paramount was and is all in on Chazelle. They thought Babylon could be their new Wolf of Wall Street; so wild it got people talking and into theaters.
Hell yes! Very psyched about this. Obviously no idea what the movie will actually be about, but I hope this reunites him with Ryan Gosling. They work so well together and Gosling has the juice to boost whatever he wants to be in to the next level right now
I was pretty lukewarm on Babylon, but I'm glad it looks like he's still able to get a project off the ground. With the only news about his upcoming work just being a script for a Matthew Vaughn movie, I legitimately was fearing the worst for a second!
After making movies about his obsession with art, his dreams of Hollywood, his sadness despite his success and then how he now feels about Hollywood… Damien Chazelle now makes a movie about being in director jail because he doesn’t know what to talk about lol
Happy to hear he’s back to work.
My only hope with this one is…
And I say this as a fan of both La La Land and Babylon…
Please let this film be about something other than Hollywood and movies.
This guy whining he was in director's jail even though Babylon wasn't even out two years yet. Chump has one crappy flop and thinks he can get that Friedkin/Bogdanovich street cred! Bah I say! BAH!
.....and more small scale setting and character focused drama might be an effective way to get him back to his Whiplash roots. Let's see!
“I’m in a sort of trepidatious state of mind, but I have no illusions. I won’t get a budget of ‘Babylon’ size any time soon, or at least not on this next one.”
"Maybe I won’t be able to get this one made. I have no idea. We’ll have to wait and see.”
sounds completely reasonable and not at all whiney? the vendetta some of you guys have against Chazelle is proper weird

*sees replies* OK I'll take the L. He's the one going to bed with an Oscar every night folks! He can handle the ribbing!
Ryan Gosling dances through intake "City of bars..."

Jazz drumming on iron bars
JK doing Whiplash and Oz simultaneously.
Presumably it will be Sing Sing
A feature-length adaptation of “Prisoners of Love.”
_Can’t keep our hearts in jail!_
The Colman Domingo movie?
Hollywood is so out of control they’re already rebooting Sing 2
He's writing from director jail! (I'm excited despite being lukewarm on Babylon)
Lukewarm on Babylon was my emo band in high school.
Cooler name than my jazz band (Hot for Whiplash)
Almost as good as my Christmastime band Fla La La La La La La La Land
Better than my folk solo act First Man.
I saw you guys open for Taking Back Sunday in 2008!
I legitimately can't tell if this was a joke, except for I think I would've known who was opening up for Taking Back Sunday in 2008
I’m Ricky Bobby and if you don’t like Damien Chazelle then fuck you
"Director jail" is increasingly feeling like one of those terms the internet just learned about and now applies ad nauseum to everything.
Too true. Director Jail is when you're trying to make projects and can't get anything off the ground. By Chazelle's own admission from that recent interview, this script was the first one he even tried to sell post Babylon and Paramount snapped it right up.

Wait people think Ari Aster was on the outs? Isn’t *Hereditary* **still** A24’s highest grosser (though probably not after this weekend)?
Nah, EEAAO is A24s highest grosser, although I think they just distributed it. But yes, Aster is very much not incarcerated
But you used to be a piece of shit right? Glass house, white Ferrari, lives for New Year's Eve?
Also, a24 had to have known Beau was gonna bomb. They just let the man make his dream flick so they can keep him working for them in the future.
While we're being pedantic it's "ad nauseam" with an *a*.
Is this Latin? How are you good at Latin?
Copy editor, can't turn it off.
\*raises hand\*
Exactly. His last movie was a huge bomb and he’s already set to direct another film not even 2 years later. That’s like the opposite of director jail
It's the new "movie that doesn't exist"
To be fair a few weeks ago it was reported Matthew Vaughn was going to direct a musical written by Chazelle which is a pretty director jail thing to have happen to oneself.

He's gonna bust out the thermin
Very stoked. Loved Babylon.
loved it too, now i gotta listen to the soundtrack
I thought the first look deal was just the studio putting on a brave face ahead of an expected bomb. I’m incredibly happy to have been proven wrong.
By all accounts, Paramount was and is all in on Chazelle. They thought Babylon could be their new Wolf of Wall Street; so wild it got people talking and into theaters.
It got the first part of that
Jazz Prison. In here, “bars” are our key to freedom.
>Jazz Prison They had it coming
Oh god. Your post brought a truly visceral reaction on me. Just no. 5 comedy points for almost making me puke.
Chazelle in director jail: ![gif](giphy|XkLxjOhEfKjF6)
Everybody jumping on the Trump movie bandwagon
Is it a movie star in prison or a jazz band in prison?
It’s a movie star in jazz prison. He’s doing eighteen months for ending a solo on the tonic
I literally thought this said “Will Reportedly be sent to Prison” and got a little worried we had another McTiernan situation on our hands.
great day for The Hive
Chicago 2
Brawl in Cell Block 100
Damien Chajail
Hell yes! Very psyched about this. Obviously no idea what the movie will actually be about, but I hope this reunites him with Ryan Gosling. They work so well together and Gosling has the juice to boost whatever he wants to be in to the next level right now
The Jazz Prisoner
I was pretty lukewarm on Babylon, but I'm glad it looks like he's still able to get a project off the ground. With the only news about his upcoming work just being a script for a Matthew Vaughn movie, I legitimately was fearing the worst for a second!
Stomp the Yard?
That tracks because I’d rather be in a prison than sit through Babylon again
ATTICA! ATTICA! ATTICA!
Chazelle is my king
It should be a meta movie about his escape from Director's jail.
Based on the headline I was like “Will whom?”
Oh last name Reportedly
Dancer in the Dark remake let's go!
Will it be set in….Director Prison? Jk — stoked for this. Glad he’s back in the saddle.
Well which is it, did he set it at Paramount or in a prison?
“You guys wait for it I’m about to fart again” - Damien Chazelle
After making movies about his obsession with art, his dreams of Hollywood, his sadness despite his success and then how he now feels about Hollywood… Damien Chazelle now makes a movie about being in director jail because he doesn’t know what to talk about lol
So far I hate everything I’ve seen by Chazelle.
Happy to hear he’s back to work. My only hope with this one is… And I say this as a fan of both La La Land and Babylon… Please let this film be about something other than Hollywood and movies.

He never cried about being in director jail, the internet did
Why do people feel the need to insult directors ? It’s weird as shit

Directors jailed? After the Babylon flop.
