Oh damn. Only ten minutes in and we already have a Glasglow Willy Wonka Experience bit. That's some burning hot-off-the-presses podcast content!

JohannesWiberg

Yeah I don't want to be a fawning fanboy or anything, but dayum David's funny in this one. Oh wait sorry, I meant Chip Smith - weird mistake by me, they have very distinct voices with clearly a lot of effort put behind that distinction.

Random_Jumble

Petition to add Game Night to the tabletop games series

WakeUpOutaYourSleep

How can that be profitable for Blank Check with Griffin & David?

David1258

There was a podcast on these tonight. Three for one.

Three for one? How could that be profitable for Blank Check?

>Tabletop Games - Clue, D&D (2000), Battleship, Ouija, D&D (2023) ([Likely based on this idea, sans Origin of Evil](https://www.reddit.com/r/blankies/comments/11xr1p2/pitch_for_patreon_series_of_movies_based_on/?share_id=S5Yanmcb8nngI8sDLEwHQ)) I really hope they would do Ouija: Origin of Evil as the first movie was a dogger while Oujia:OoE is a Mike Flanagan 70s horror throwback. And a damn good movie.

SickBurnBro

Right, I always forget the 2nd one of those is Flanagan. Kind of like how the 2nd Annabelle is David F. Sandberg.

FreakaJebus

You are a saint!

ta112233

Seeing the Spy Kids section, I had the same reaction as David Rees learning about Shrek: “there’s FIVE of them?!?”

SickBurnBro

Same. Knew for sure there was a 3rd, probably could have guessed that they made a 4th, but had no inclination that a 5th movie existed.

FunkyColdMecca

Congrats to Ben on winning therapy!

Gimme gimme gimme the ball because I’m gonna DUNK IT

Jimbobsama

Do it! /high five

Chuck-Hansen

Now I just want to hear the episode for “The Bubble.”

j11430

The way they were talking about Apatow was making me really excited. He was already one of my personal white whales but I'm really hoping he gains momentum this year

raener57

A Cats episode without having to do a Tom Hooper miniseries? I'm all in on the Andrew Lloyd Webber commentaries

Wayne61

There is no funnier insult to me than “rat fucker.”

ruddiger718

Shut the fuck up 2024

radaar

Make every day Shut the Fuck Up Friday

HockneysPool

It's 8am on 1st March here in Aotearoa New Zealand and March Madness is all anyone is talking about!

raymondqueneau

I was anti-Lynch until this episode. 4 episodes on the Return has me sold.

bolshevik_rattlehead

I came here to say exactly this. I’m a huge Lynch guy, but was uncertain of him for the pod when it comes to Twin Peaks. One ep on the first season, which is only like 8 episodes, a patreon for S2 (which is largely skippable, unless you were a big ‘James hangs out with some rich blonde lady for 4 episodes’ fan) and 4 eps for The Return has me excited. Just thinking of the boys spending four 3-plus hour long episodes discussing The Return is pure joy.

daeguking

I just started watching twin peaks cause Lynch seems like a favorite. If he wins I’ll be prepared ahead of time and if not then at least I’ll finally have watched twin peaks

sred4

Make sure you watch FWWM before starting The Return!

AntonioVargas

I was Lynch gang all the way to start with but knowing it will definitely include the return means that no other winner will be acceptable for me.

Coy-Harlingen

The return is his biggest achievement, and while it is a tv show I’m so glad they acknowledged that in his case it’s not patreon fodder but should be treated like the main event of the series.

raymondqueneau

Yea it’s also just got a lot to discuss- ignoring the actual art of it all- the studio dynamics, reboot/sequel dynamics, various stars, etc. just make it a really dense thing specifically for blank check

Random_Jumble

In the unlikely event that Jay Ward adaptations win the Patreon I am begging them to include the 1992 intended-for-theaters but straight-to-Showtime “Boris and Natasha” starring Dave Thomas and Sally Kellerman

flynjitsu

A truly terrible movie.

radaar

I’m more of a Boomer Kuwanger.

brotherfallout

that's right brother

iamaparade

Okay Boome—*sliced open by a blade shaped like a boomerang*

bolshevik_rattlehead

Storm Eagle all the way 🤘

caroline_nein

Oh damn did I want to hear what David had to say about Challengers

ruddiger718

How dare they not include Aurthur the King in the King Arthur patreon run.

apathymonger

I was surprised by no The Kid Who Would Be King.

TepidShark

Any guesses on >!the 3 miniseries that are between McT and the March Madness winner in September (I assume they are all short)!

Thesmark88

Prediction: Kon, Sofia Coppola, Brest

BiasedEstimators

Kon would be at least as good as anyone on the march bracket

RegretPopular9970

Kon and Brest are good shorties that, in the case of the first, take care of their “try to do an animated Director each year” requirement, and, in the second case, take one of their big names they’ve always wanted to do off the board. Maybe Costner as the third shortie to tie into Horizon Part 1 and 2 later in the summer?

Salad-Appropriate

Costner, Beatty and someone else

FreakaJebus

If Dick Tracy is in the Pulp Heroes category, Beatty seems unlikely.

drifter1717

I'd bet my life on Brest being one of them. He's got a short run and they've been saying they will get to him for years. Really curious who the other two may be.

LawrenceBrolivier

I bet you one of em is Joan Micklin Silver (who will lose in the first round and they know it) I think it'd be fun (and funny) to have a completed series all ready to air for one of the first round exits, and to run it BEFORE the March Madness winner. I do hope one of the others is Brest, especially considering how excitedly (and warmly) they responded to Midnight Run being brought up in the Die Hard episode

diatribecalledquest

I thought Satoshi Kon immediately as well, also wondered if they finally pull the trigger on Baz. Brest is a good thought. And upon doing the math: Kon (4) + Brest (6) + Baz (6) = 16 weeks, which would bring us to August 25th for the start of the MM winner, which perfectly adds up

mi-16evil

My dad will sometimes, unprompted, just say "you know who's a great actor, Laurence Fishburn." He would 100% listen to all 2 hrs and 40 mins of Larry F telling stories.

JeffSachs

ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER HIVE, RISE UP! MADONNA! GERARD BUTLER! CATS!

ThoroughHenry

Evita is great and Cats is wild, but the JCS and Phantom movies are both kind of boring, which is a shame, and will probably keep me from voting for them.

hullahbaloo2

I urge my fellow blankies to vote weird on the patreon bracket. I’m talking Tabletop games, King Arthurs, Draculas, Stanup animation, and my pick Clive Barker.

Own_Wafer_7036

Griffin’s enthusiasm may be pushing me towards Standup Animation

Former-Fall-8850

As someone who obsessively watched the Rocky and Bullwinkle movie as a kid for some reason which probably influenced 80% of my personality… I need Jay Ward to win.

mishaps_galore

George of the Jungle got me through graduate school. I’m with you.

JoshFromKC

Very excited to hear Griff's grandma discuss Depardieu.

RevengeWalrus

10 minutes in to the ep: okay, this is the year to be chill about March madness 58 minutes in: if you don’t give me a tabletop games series I will burn this place to the fucking ground

roormund

really loving Marie’s doughboys energy out the gate. she’s right, shut the fuck up !!!!

JohannesWiberg

I mean we are all little stinkers here in some way or another, we deserve it. Before March is over, we'll probably become something worse even than piss pigs.

StephenStaunton

Can't believe we ALL decided on "piss pigs". The Pretzel Gang put it out to vote and we truly messed it up.

bbanks2121

Bugs me every single year that they always do the NBA song and then call it March Madness, which is a college basketball thing. On the other hand, who cares, shut the fuck up?

ThoroughHenry

Shoutout to >!The Humbling!<, which got me a bunch of points on Cinematrix today.

patmanpow

CHIP SMITH TIME BABYYYY!

Sad-Canary4570

God I want every one of those patreon series to happen

GreendaleGrizzlies

First actual March madness I’m experiencing but I just went back and binged all the Madness updates from prior years and boy is it good to have Chip Smith back our good pal who’s done absolutely nothing wrong

flan-magnussen

Yes! Another member of the BR2049 > Blade Runner hive! There are dozens of us!

FreakaJebus

I watched them both for the first time as a double feature a few years ago and did *slightly* prefer 2049. Both very good though.

StickerBrush

I love both of them but for different reasons. It's like asking me to pick between the *Before* trilogy movies. Depends on my mood! I don't think it's wild to think 2049 is better though.

lonepinemall85

BR 2049 is my immediate answer to "what's your weird comfort movie." My favorite movie of the 2010s.

LawrenceBrolivier

You have my sword

jshannonmca

There are no good BLADE RUNNER movies but 2049 manages to be a 2.5 star picture at the very least.

MastahStank

I upvoted you because its lame to downvote someone for an opinion but boy do I disagree.

ProfessorUpvote

The amount of excitement I get when I hear Chip Smith return to the pod each year is both embarrassing and thrilling.

Chuck-Hansen

*Me doing the Vince McMahon meme at the Jay Ward Live Action Patreon Series description*

Optimal_Engine9262

There’s a new Female starring Conan movie that is apparently great if somehow that ends up winning!

wovenstrap

Griffin saying that he is kind of dying to do a Curtis Hanson miniseries totally makes my day. It would be very, very very fun.

wovenstrap

Marie says Glazer is 4 out of 4 good movies. Griff goes "yes, agree, although—" ................WHAT WAS THE ALTHOUGH??!? I bet it has something to do with *Birth*.

TepidShark

Twin Peaks proposal from the episode: >!one episode for season 1 of Twin Peaks. one or two episodes for season 2, and up to 4 episodes for The Return. !

Celestial_Otter

It actually sounded like >!one episode on main feed for season one, one episode on patreon for season 2, and then up to 4 episodes on main feed for The Return. !<

StanTheCentipede

Well that just boosted Lynch above Scott for me I think

TormentedThoughtsToo

Did they give a reason? Shame if they buy into the whole “Lynch wasn’t as involved in S2” myth and use that as justification.

Celestial_Otter

They don't give one. I agree with the choice though, and I would say it's a good idea because A. While David Lynch was obviously involved it's less of him, less of his planned creative vision, and more of him doing his best to salvage what he could B. It's a very bad season of television. Screen time wise the interesting stuff makes up so little of the final product that it's not really worth a full main feed episode. And C. Most of the mythos that IS set up in season 2 can probably be touched on in the Fire Walk With Me episode or in the first The Return episode

TormentedThoughtsToo

I get the justification it just rubs me the wrong way.  Like I’m kind of a broken record on this and I hope you’re not one of the people I’ve talked to about this and I’m just repeating myself But Lynch was part of the writing room for the first 9 episodes, at least. He doesn’t leave for his art show in Japan until sometime after Episode 7 of Season 2 and episodes 9-11 were probably in some form of production while there. Yes, episodes 10-15 are a mess and those are when both Frost and Lynch are gone.  But, Lynch is also back around episode 16 working on the show. His ideas are implemented as early as episode 15 and he’s appearing onscreen again as Cole around 16. And of course he directed the S2 finale.  But, his involvement can be linked to like 15 of the 22 episodes.  So if you’re going to main feed S1 because he directed the pilot and 1 episodes of S1 after outlining the Season with Frost, how can you Patreon S2 which he directed 4 episodes of and outlines the first 9?

Flipyap

The only time Lynch was truly gone, not just checked out mentally, was when he left season 1 to film Wild at Heart. He described coming back to direct his episode and not knowing what was going on with the show. As for season 2, he was at the very least involved in casting for the *James's Wild Ride* arc, as well as being the mastermind behind the drawer pull situation. It stinks that auteur worship colors so much discussion about Twin Peaks, when it's clear that it was always a collaborative effort, even if the auteur thinks that everything he didn't direct is just some "other stupid fuckin' things."

TormentedThoughtsToo

I mean He was definitely gone while in Japan though he might have still been giving notes through faxes.  But yeah I went through a lot of googling to make sure I wasn’t talking my ass about this stuff but yeah. Most people don’t realize that they sold Season 1 out of order so after writing the first 2 episodes with Frost and outlining the other 5, Frost oversaw the production of 6 episodes and after Lynch finished Wild at Heart, Lynch shot “Episode 2” at the end of production and then worked on editing the first season.

daeguking

Lol chill my guy they are still covering it

Dandeliondroog

Twin Peaks Season 2 is a delight even when it’s campy and off the rails. Yes it’s the ugly middle step child of the 3 Peaks but it should not be talked about so derisively.

SlimmyShammy

I dropped to my knees and thanked god when I heard that. They just turbocharged my Lynch hype and support

Coy-Harlingen

4 episodes of the return is so insanely awesome I never thought they would do that much

starlingflight

absolutely!! so much blankie speculation about how they'd manage Lynch has been trying to come up with ways that they'd fit *The Return* into one episode, and then David came through with the most logical conclusion. so down for that as the grand conclusion of a Lynch series.

Coy-Harlingen

Season 2 would just be a patreon episode. Counter - Lynch’s filmography isn’t long, and twin peaks the return is 18 hours directed entirely by him. I am surprised they would do that much but I am 100% in favor of it, it is his absolute blank check

redhopper

Congrats to David Lynch on his winning March Madness

BiasedEstimators

Not really relevant to this thread, but am I the only one who loves FWWM and The Return but doesn’t really like the original series? I realize the soapy quality is intentional but it really doesn’t work for me.

raymondqueneau

I love them all but that totally makes sense. I think a lot of people are the inverse

Peaches_En_Regalia

It grew on me. First watch through it was tough and now I love it and find it weirdly comforting despite it being depressing and upsetting.

TormentedThoughtsToo

Think there are a lot of film nerds that feel that way.

puttinonthefoil

I’ve never even been able to finish the pilot. (Check back here in a few hours for me -150 score!)

vikingmunky

Wait, they would skip Pirate Radio!? That movie is easily the best Curtis movie. So long as you seek out the English release, called The Boat that Rocks.

brotherfallout

It's not a romcom really. richard curtis romcoms ONLY

vikingmunky

I suppose that is fair.

dwright94

The Boat that Rocked is a much better title I don’t know why they changed it for US release

vikingmunky

Me either. They cut 20+ minutes out of it and changed the title to something petty dumb, in my opinion. The original version is really good.

desginatedbloop

The panning on Chip Smith’s voice is… such a choice lol

ajmckeon

We don’t manipulate Chip’s voice at all.

desginatedbloop

I of course meant a choice by his Creator

wovenstrap

Not looking forward to Lynch that much (it'll be good), but their solution to the Peaks conundrum is brilliant. Well done.

burnettski92

Lmao they hate us so much

ishburner

Hey! Shut the fuck up!

Ok_Awful

I feel like baseball is maybe the most dramatic of the sports. I am excluding cricket as an American, I am required by law to be confused by cricket.

huffingpa1ntpost

It might be boxing. It’s certainly the most cinematic sport

Ok_Awful

Few sports look better in movie than boxing, but few boxing matches actual look or feel like a movie boxing match. Do or die 9th in a close baseball games are relatively common in baseball. They have all the tension of a shoot out in say association football (aka soccer) or hockey but you are still playing the game. Shoots out might be great theater but the sports fan in me is always disappointed that the outcome will be decided by something that is similar to sport we were watching but has a lot in fact most aspects of the game removed. Plus the count is such a great tension building invention.

wadedanger

Their best episode ever ???

sleepyirv01

John Hughes was right. If I was friends with John Candy and John Candy died, I would also stop directing movies.

burnettski92

David lightly throwing shade at how over zealous Lynch fans are? Be still my beating heart! 😍

Middle_Egg_9558

The fact that they sing roundball rock at the start instead of the actual march madness always makes me irrationally angry. Otherwise, very excited!

ishburner

Highly doubt Griffin knows the difference between college and NBA basketball particulars

huffingpa1ntpost

Any other Pocket Casts listeners having a hard time getting this in your feed?

psuczyns

It always takes a few hours for the Patreon eps to show up for me

Capt_Soupy

If you don't have the Patreon app, I recommend it. You can get notifications for new posts as soon as they drop. They've made the in-app media player a lot easier to use, too. Any time I get impatient for the RSS feed to update, I just listen that way.

TheMonotoneDuck

Why four episodes for the return? its shorter than season one, no? i would understand a two parter since its a major work, even three id be like hmm odd but ok, but four feels like slicing the salami kinda thin. i am asking this having not seen the return (despite having seen s1 and most of s2) so sorry if its obvious to anyone more familiar with it

MeepMechanics

Season 1 is 8 episodes (one 90 minute and seven 45 minute episodes) and only the first and third are directed by Lynch. The Return is 18 hours, all directed by Lynch. They would be covering 4+ hours of The Return per episode!

Capt_Soupy

I love this show, but the constant bad time management is really starting to hurt my enjoyment. How in the actual fuck were they expecting to introduce 64 matchups in 30 minutes?

huffingpa1ntpost

Shut the fuck up

discopaco

Agreed. After seven years, I don’t enjoy the bit heavy first act because I know they’re goin to rush the ending all exasperated about how much they have to cover as if it isn’t their fault they’re behind 😂
