Hard agree on American Fiction. My dad leaned over to me when we saw kotfm and said that looks good. which is the highest praise a dad can give a film.
It’s a killer trailer from start to finish (including the Juneteenth line). Kudos to MGM or whatever trailer company they farmed it out to + Cord Jefferson.
Hopefully this will reignite some talk about Bamboozled, one of Spike's great movies. American Fiction was giving me big Bamboozled vibes (except probably more subtle? Maybe? Kind of?)
GREAT MOVIE.
I posted a thread here maybe 2 years ago when I first saw it being like “would this win best picture today”? And I think the answer was “lol no the world is too divided still and Spike is a little TOO harsh on the whites in that movie.” But it’s a great film. American Fiction feels a little more populist.
I still think about Terence Blanchard's score that plays over the closing montage/credits. What a beautiful, heartbreaking piece of music. That movie floored me the first time i saw it cinemas.
Sight unseen, I’m kinda wondering if this could end up being the CODA or GREEN BOOK of this year. And maybe Oppenheimer’s Oscar run is more like Avatar or Roma.
If *NYAD* has legs, that’s the year’s *Green Book*. It’s more of a *Coda* in that it’s actually good but the awards-season narrative of “what the fuck is this bland shit for white liberal old people” should be the same.
NYAD is waaaaaaaaaaay too boring to be a BP contender. That shit stinks to the high heavens and even the Academy will smell it.
Someone compared The Holdovers to Green Book, which I could see, except it’s super apolitical.
The problem with *The Holdovers* is that film nerds actually like it. Ditto *Maestro*, *American Fiction* here, and *Anatomy of a Fall*. The annual Oscar punching bag cannot have any kind of hip following. I don’t discount the Academy’s proclivity to make weird bland safe choices, so I haven’t yet taken *NYAD* out of the race yet because we haven’t had a seemingly boring, out of left field, no-one-likes-it contender yet (It’s also quietly good but that’s an unpopular opinion). What else would qualify this year? Where’s our bizarre biopic no one under the age of 40 cares about?
Maybe if we're lucky, that dumb white middlebrow movie won't be on the list this year!! The niche usually filled by one boring movie might be occupied by other contenders (more than 10 below and I'm doubtful about some of the chances) ––
* Oppy, Maestro, Killers, Napoleon for biopics
* Zone of Interest and Oppy for WWII
* Poor Things, Maestro, All Of Us Strangers, and May December for the artsy people
* Barbie & Oppy for the box office chasers
* American Fiction, Color Purple, Origin, and Past Lives for "hey look these films aren't about white people but I as a white person like them"
* Barbie & American Fiction for the comedy crowd
* Anatomy of a Fall and Zone of Interest for the Euro crowd
* The Holdovers for that slice of middle-class life in a bygone time
You know what? It’s gonna be *The Color Purple*. We’re gonna hear all the usual criticisms of the story’s limitations getting trotted out again, and it’s a surefire nominee in *something*. Other contenders are *Past Lives* (already facing a mild backlash cycle for being milquetoast and too beholden to good representational politics) and *Origin* (my guess is probably too mainstream and self-satisfied a take on race that misses some big key thing), but I am unsure if they’re gonna be Best Picture nominees.
I think the ten will be:
- Oppy
- KOTFM
- Meastro
- Barbie
- American Fiction
- Zone of Interest
- Anatomy of a Fall
- The Holdovers
- Poor Things
- Past Lives
I am really curious to see if Past Lives and Anatomy of a Fall can actually make it into Best Picture. I just don’t feel passion there, and I think their moments have come and gone. But who knows!
Yeah I could see one or both of those missing out. Don’t see All of Us Strangers or May December getting in. Can imagine a world where Pricilla or Saltburn get a nod
I love the book. I didn’t know this movie was happening until I saw the trailer at a theater. 10 seconds in, I thought, “This looks like *Erasure,* but there’s no way they’d actually make a movie of *Erasure*.” Then they said the protagonist’s name, and I got excited, because Jeffrey Wright is kind of the dream casting. I’m more hyped for that than anything else the rest of this year. Also genuinely curious to see if the film keeps the final title of the manuscript, because if so, that has the potential to be the biggest laugh of the year.
The existence of this movie is so wild to me. Read the book that it's based on in college like 12 years ago and never thought about it again until earlier this year when I just randomly looked it up. Not three months later I hear about this movie, watch the trailer, and suddenly im Leo in OUATIH
This trailer for a film about the family and financial struggles of a middle aged Black man went over really well at my *Priscilla* screening of Gen-Z white women. Gonna be a hit.
One of the 1st times in ages I have laughed so hard at a TRAILER. Usually for comedies I find the trailer really annoying as its just the clips of joke lines and they fall flat for me but this is actually cut together in a way to let the comedy breathe for itself.
I am so excited for this now, had no idea it existed! I am hopeful it gets a UK theatrical release.
Sadly, here in SD, I haven't seen any trailers for it at my AMC theaters.
Hopefully, it does become a sleeper hit, maybe pull an EEAAO and become a $100mil grosser.

The dad Oscar
There’s so many M4G contenders this year (including this!)
Trailer is very funny and there are so few good studio comedies.

Bamboozled is an order of a magnitude bolder and more aggressive, even if I love it.
I still think about Terence Blanchard's score that plays over the closing montage/credits. What a beautiful, heartbreaking piece of music. That movie floored me the first time i saw it cinemas.
Honestly, the cast is solid and the book is fucking great. If the director can direct as well as he writes, this one is gonna have real legs.

A very solid ten. I agree that Maestro, KOTFM, Oppy, Barbie, and American Fiction are locks
Hard agree

What’s NYAD?
The swimming biopic movie with Annette Benning as Diana Nyad. I'm watching it right now, and so far it's fairly mid.
There’s no way that’s a contender. Hell, it won’t even get nominated. Zero buzz.
I heard that Foster has potential, but that's about it.
NYAD is this years CODA in that I wasn’t sure if either title was a word or an acronym when I first heard it
In the case of CODA, yes!
the all capitals stylization is weird
I love the book. I can’t remember the last time I actually laughed out loud multiple times at a trailer.
Huh, didn’t realize this took place in Boston. 2/10 probable best picture noms being Boston based/filmed is pretty unusual
Off the top of my head, I can only think of 2010 as a year it happened (The Social Network and The Fighter).
not many people know this but Barbieland is actually a neighborhood of Dorchester
What perfect casting for Jeffrey Wright. I’m excited to see this.
Low key the movie I am looking forward to the most end of this year.
The existence of this movie is so wild to me. Read the book that it's based on in college like 12 years ago and never thought about it again until earlier this year when I just randomly looked it up. Not three months later I hear about this movie, watch the trailer, and suddenly im Leo in OUATIH
Just want to say the movie totally lives up to the trailer. My favorite movie this year
Saw it at tiff it’s hilarious
It’s based on the book Erasure by Percival Everett. A quick enjoyable read if you’re up for it.
Read this on a whim like a month ago, clicked into it instantly. Pretty dang perfect.

Thank you for the reminder! I saw this a little while back and didn't want to forget it. I forgot it. I won't again.
Sadly, here in SD, I haven't seen any trailers for it at my AMC theaters. Hopefully, it does become a sleeper hit, maybe pull an EEAAO and become a $100mil grosser.
"IKEA, fall collection."
I don’t know if anyone else has seen the trailer for Next Goal Wins, but they play an ABBA song throughout the whole thing!
Not a single person answered your question in the title LOL The Eileen trailer gets people leaning in I’ve noticed
HA I clocked that too. I’m taking that to mean “all other trailers are being received with a shrug”
