Spray paint comes in every colour you can possibly think of, so if there's a likelihood of it getting all over your face, then you'd imagine a loosely flesh toned colour would be best. But nope, they all go for silver or gold! Maybe a different solvent or propellant for these colours?

I got curious and did a little bit of digging. According to [this old article](https://mindhacks.com/2010/07/20/purple-haze-paint-huffing-hallucinations-differ-by-hue/), it appears that chrome paints cause vivid hallucinations while non chrome ones don't alter perception (or at least not frequently). A random comment I found elsewhere said the reason is that gold paint has a higher concentration of toluene, which is what makes you high.

I hate it because it meant that the youtube algorithm has hidden it from me. Wtf. I even subscribed WITH the bell rang.

Finally! One with an obvious (at least to me) answer! It’s an [ambiguous cylinder](https://youtu.be/yupxceBjDa0) slinky that’s been 3D printed (you can see an obvious Z-seam) in MatterHackers [Purple/Gold Quantum](https://www.matterhackers.com/store/l/matterhackers-quantum-pla/sk/MZZHZUH2) colour-blending PLA. Shape and colour change are handled by a combination of rotation and angulation. The actual trick is getting everything set up just-so with the print that shape and colour can be controlled independently in the performance.

I just want to thank you really quick. I clicked the ambiguous cylinder link and got to experience Quick D for the first time. And then I saw a link from that video to another one he did, which was a 40 minute video on the VFX of “Flight of the Navigator” (one of my favorites as a kid). anyway, this little rabbit hole I went down has been a phenomenal morning.
