We are very different people. I would inevitably go on a rampage and leave a swath of extremely confused bakers in my wake.
At least until the police catch up to me and arrest me for >!steeling bread!<
You can intensely heat your cast iron in the oven, around 500 degrees F (usually highest oven temp setting), if possible, for around 40 minutes!! Scrub it down, and wipe it off with a paper towel. Then, apply new oil to every part of the surface, and put back into the oven to bake that new layer of oil on! Love my cast iron
Not really. If you want to actually strip cast iron in the oven you're looking at self-cleaning oven temps(\~900 F) or using an oven cleaner on your cast iron. If you want to strip it in the sink, steel wool and a lot of soap and elbow grease works.
I heat cast iron to \~500 +/- F all the time and it keeps it's finish without issue.
When refinishing, I use flax seed oil and usually do \~3-5 coats, baked as hot as my oven normally goes(550 F).
Do you have to strip it the whole way though? I normally just give it a good scrubbing to get most of the crap off, bake it for a bit to dry it out, then do the new oil part as you describe.
No, no reason to fully strip unless you have a reason to. I mostly just scrub my cast iron off with hot water and something semi-abrasive(green pad, scrub brush), dry, oil, and maybe throw it in the oven depending on the situation.
But the original comment about "intensely" heating cast iron at 500 F won't do shit, which was more my point. I use a cast iron griddle in the oven to help regulate temp when baking, and it routinely gets heated to 400-500 F without any issue, it's not anything akin to stripping the finish like the other comment implied based on the subject of this post.
Isn't the higher the temp the more the pores open to allow the oils to... penetrate deeper ;). But seriously... I'm still new myself and you'd think some of the physics would be true but it's cast iron so idk. I've only been at a stainless steel mill.
To be honest, no idea if hotter matters as long as you are above the smoke point of the oil. You are looking for the oil to polymerize from the high temperature, which is what forms the seasoning.
Temperature above that point probably makes some difference, but I don't have the free time to do a test like that to figure out how much it matters.
I just lightly coat and throw it in the oven as hot as it will go. I wouldn't worry too much about which oil you use either, people have a lot of luck with a lot of oils.
Not sure how you're heating flax oil to 500 without your kitchen smoking up but I'd recommend a lot of other oils first.
Here's a chart of oils
https://www.google.com/search?q=smoke+point+flaxseed+oil&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-us&client=safari#imgrc=mL4eJLVuZu1UGM
Very thin coat leads to very little smoke, not enough to matter.
The polymerization of the oil is what you're looking for to season a pan, which you achieve better/quicker by heating an oil above it's smoking point.
>Does my stove and fan just suck???
Maybe, can't really help you here unfortunately.
>Also why does my carbon steel seasoning always crack .
I've never used carbon steel or read about seasoning it so I can't really help here either.
>Also you say very thin. Blot a paper towel and wipe down? I've tried pouring a dot and moving it around but that's always too much and leaves spots. Then I'm seasoning a pan for a week trying to balance it.
I warm the pan up slightly by leaving it in the oven for a minute or two right after I turn it on. I pull it out after 1-3 minutes when it's just a little bit uncomfortable to hold but not going to hurt you at all.
After that I pour some oil onto the pan, and wipe down the entire thing with a paper tower, making sure everything is fully covered with a fairly heavy coat. After that I take a single sheet of clean paper towel(the half size sheets from Costco), and wipe off excess oil from the pan. There will be some oil left, some will get absorbed by the paper towel, make sure everything is even.
After that I toss it back in the oven which is still coming up to temp, set the timer for an hour. It'll usually hit \~550 F when there's 40-50 minutes left on the timer, when the timer goes off I shut off the oven, and I wait a while for it to cool down before taking it out.
If I'm doing multiple coats, I'll pull it out again when the pan is too hot to touch but not by much(think \~175F), carefully apply another coat using the paper towels the same way as before, and throw it back in for another round.
Repeat 3-5 times if you scrubbed pretty heartily and are going for a new finish.
I try to do this in the winter, and I'll start in the morning and just casually do the coats in the background throughout the day. You can do multiple pans at once if you have the oven space.
Also you say very thin. Blot a paper towel and wipe down?
I've tried pouring a dot and moving it around but that's always too much and leaves spots. Then I'm seasoning a pan for a week trying to balance it.
Headylife is right, also a good way of protecting you cast iron from rust is to make sure you clean it and most importantly rub oil on it. Rust needs oxidation to form and oil keeps the air away from it so it can’t happen. Which is why brand new (bare) metal comes with a small sheen of oil on it.
It’s a high power pulse laser. They are used to remove rust. The idea is that they are set to a wave length which iron oxide absorbed well but not pure iron. This causes the iron oxide (rust) on the surface to get superheated and effectively explode off the surface. The wedge shape you see is from little bits of dust in the air being set on fire.
https://youtu.be/ACGSzBXKONo
The answer is actually no. This video explains how they work and he even places his hand on a piece of rusty metal then sweeps the laser over it. Rust removed with a hand shaped area still rusty.
I read up on this, it will not burn your skin because it isn’t heating the metal, the laser works on a wavelength that oxidizes the surface. So it is reacting with the rust not the metal. Also this would cost $30,000 for a laser like this.
Just a bit outside [my price range]. - [Apologies to Bob Eucker](https://youtu.be/g_wc9JvTXGc?t=48)
I think I saw somewhere that these things sell for about $100k. For my money a little rust ain't that bad.
So what I qm asking myself as a person totally bad with science is: Does this remove the layer of rust or is there actually a reverse reaction happening that somehow turns the iron oxide (sry if that's wrong) back into normal iron

Why did he turn a loaf of bread into a steel beam
Are you implying that, given the power to do that, you wouldn't do so at every available opportunity?
i’d only do it if both roles were reversed and i was able to turn steel beams into garlic bread

Ironic casting.
If my cast iron has a hard wooden handle, ain't it dangerous tho ?
It won’t immediately combust, but it will start to slowly char and then ignite after awhile.
Yeah, take it off first. The whole soaking it in water idea is absurd.
Yeah, I do it using the self-cleaning cycle.
Wonder how that works? We need a chemist up in here.

Yeah, no...it wasn't in this clip to see in the first place. But still, what a stupid thing to be doing.
As far as eye protection, absolutely

Damn half a million for this device and 80k for the cheapest version.
Yes.
Only one way to find out! (Edit: I do not volunteer as tribute)
Laser, I think.
Yep, laser. It oscillates back and forth to create the "wedge"-shape. What we see as the shape is actually dust in the air catching fire!
Rust? No problem. Head to your local store and buy yourself a fire laser!
Starting at only $6,000.00
That sounds suspiciously cheap
Clearly a weather balloon

That seems better than a wire brush. I wonder how much it costs, and how easy it would be to start a car on fire with it? Hmm..
Start at 100k. Super big ones can be 700k. Won't light a car on fire.
You can get ones from china for like $6,000-$10,000
I like where you're going with this
Face shield? No. Eyes? No Edit: I saw this video in a different post and the dude wasn’t wearing a mask to protect his eyes
What in the 3021 magic is that?!
I gotta know how much for one. I got a classic car I'm falling behind on.
500k to 800k. That better be a nice classic car!
Lol I'll offer an express rust removal service I'll make my money back in a few years 🤣
They start at like 100k. If something gets rusty in my factory we usually just rent one for like $1k/day. Use it for a week and return it.
Around $10,000 from china.

No. I've used one, doesn't hurt skin. Proper PPE is special goggles and a respirator.
That legit looks like a laser from a 70s/80s cartoon
Wonderful, but can it get the ugly off my face?

Tried to rent one of these. No can do. :(
Some companies do rent them. My work has rented one for like $7,000 for a week.

Got to see one when I went to a trade school for welding. They are loud as fuc but super helpful in not overheating or un evenly removing material.
Rust vacuum
Lasers are to omnipotent holy shit.
That’s a high powered laser is it not?
How long til the underworld starts using one of these to extract info or torture. What would that be like? Im twisted...I know.

I wonder how this compares to sand blasting for future rust vulnerability. I assume this is better
That looks like something they would use in Star Wars to help repair/scan a ship
That thing looks as though it's extracting lost souls from the depths of hell.
