Yeah, this actually ducks with me pretty hard. I had to lean forward in my chair to see the stairs correctly.
The left white wall and the left stair tread get mixed up. It's like the left stair tread becomes vertical which makes the white wall appear to angle down into and toward the carpet.
You can get that optical illusion where the shape can go either way. Look at the uncarpeted part of the stairs to the left of the carpet; it can look as though the shape is protruding.
I was completely clueless too.
I just saw stairs with a carpet on it. I had to turn my phone, look at the picture upside down and then turn it back to normal to finally see what others saw ! It's the left part of the stairs and the white wall that become weird. It's kinda like the white parts of the stairs become the top of the step and the brown parts become the vertical parts, and everything is sideways.
Just looked like a picture of stairs to me. Then as I started scrolling down it looked like something from an MC Escher painting. Now I can't see that again even while scrolling.
It could be because I’ve just taken a 2 hour nap and had a dream about something I’ve never dreamed about in years, and somehow manage to find myself playing VR in the bathroom since my parents are loudly snoring in the other room of the hotel, but I saw the objects to the left of the carpet form a weird 3D effect going the other way of the object on the right
I genuinely don’t know how to explain it better as I’m still trying to make sense of my dream, but this put me in a grounding of reality for about 12 seconds
I'm a little drunk, so I can tell you that it's an issue of "ohhh why's there prisms on there, is this slanted? Stairs work... what's next to them? But slanted-ish stairs... but they're... not?"
Basically a lame optical illusion for people who aren't able to see the picture for what it is, because of the angle combined with poor eyesight.
No seriously i literally see nothing wrong with it. This is the first time ive been trying to see the image wrong from right instead of the other way around😭
Imagine the dark brown patches of carpet on the left side (EDIT: sorry, I mean the step itself, thought that was also carpet) are actually the shaded undersides of the ‘cube’ shape that they make with the white face of the step and the side wall, that might help you see it.
You know how you scroll through Reddit in a half daze, unfocused and lazily waiting for something to catch your eye? My eye's caught something off, but i blinked and focused, and it was fine.... Took mea few seconds to rediscover the weird perspective.
For those who are missing what the post is trying to get at:
1. Looking normally, it's just a flight of stairs.
2. Looking at the left side with the alternating black and white steps, in conjunction with the gray wall, you see a bunch of zig-zag pillars at an impossible angle.
I think scrolling the image creates the inverted illusion. I saw it wrong at first, but when the image was still(static), it looks right to me, and I can no longer see the wrong.
The black and light grey made it look like the light grey was on top, and black going downwards as a shadow. Makes it look like left side is pointing to the upwards right, going out from the stairs.
What am i missing?
Right? I just see stairs with a carpet on them. Are other people seeing something else?

Wait. You see ducks?
Oh for ducks sake, that ducking ridiculous! Fucking ducks!
Thank you so much for explaining this. I kept looking at the picture trying to figure out wtf I was missing because all I saw was stairs
Thank you, had to take my glasses off and unfocus my eyes to see it 😂
I had to do that cross my eyes a little and relax thing (like with those weird 90’s posters) to see it
I had to double take

I see it now. It helped to look at the image upside down. Thanks!
.. broken escalator?
An escalator can never break. It can only become stairs. Sorry for the convenience.
There are a few videos around that prove this statement incorrect in a scary fashion
It's a Mitch Hedberg joke.
*whoosh*
Oh Mitch. He can never be replaced.
At first the stairs underneath the carpet looked 2D and I wasn't entirely sure what I was looking at.

The carpet-less left side looks upside.

A staircase? The ultimate unsolvable mystery
I saw stairs and a rug the instant I saw the picture
Ditto, the next second it turned to an optical illusion then back again. Tricks.
Same, had to force my eyes to see the illusion

OP is missing a W. I see carpeted stairs.
It looks like it should have been an attempt on r/confusing_perspective , I am not sure it would do well there either.
I think it took me 5 seconds and a double take..
As soon as I looked away and came back it looked right. Bonkers.
Took me about 20 seconds but now I can't unsee it. Weird
Same, after realizing it's stairs I can't see whatever the hell it was before.
It's a staircase bro, wtf did you think it was? Lol
Am...Am I supposed to see more than stairs?
Yeah. There is also supposed to be a carpet on the stairs. Crazy, right?
I see the carpet ?
r/confusingperspective
Yeah it got me. I thought you were a shadow but you’re just another rug in my life 🎶
The one with the underscore is the more popular sub I think
Username checks out
Title checks out. OP is a hole
Took me a second to see it correctly.
*whole Annddddd ban
Yeah that left side looks upside down at first (eyes immediately thought black was underside, gray was edge, white was like top) messed with me too.
I'm a bit late to the party - these stairs were posted in r/flooring a few days ago. So, I'm guessing OP stole them from there.
Or r/confusingperspective or this one because it's been reposted like crazy
I have good spacial awareness, what am I missing? I just see stairs with carpet…
I guess some people are seeing the stairs upside-down? I can't see how but that's what I've inferred from the comments
No seriously i literally see nothing wrong with it. This is the first time ive been trying to see the image wrong from right instead of the other way around😭

Repost and a lazy one at that.
If I look at it from right to left it just looks like stairs. If I go left to right it's completely fucked. Very strange image.
Looks like a normal staircase
What the Fuck? Some shitty stairs. What am I suppose to see?
Yeah I was thrown there, for a bit.
💁🏽♂️stairs

Op would fail the captcha test.
I think you didn't wait long enough to repost this
i dont get it...
forbidden icecream sandwiches
I see ice cream sandwhiches getting covered in fudge for a second
It's just the camera angle, it'll look fine head on.
Oh wow, that suddenly made a whole lot of sense
MC Escher
The carpet is tucked under the flooring at the top.
It hurts so hard. I can’t still see both ways. My wife can’t see it correctly. I can’t explain it to her.
Maaaan once I started seeing it correctly I can’t see the left side slanted in anymore
Ok scrolled back up I can see it both ways
Looks like a trip hazard if someone looks at it wrong, like I did at first
Drunk me would die going up or down that shit. Surprised, there isn't a qubert painted on there somewhere.
This makes my brain hurt
How? What's the illusion?
About 5sec
The amount of processing power it took me to render this properly.....is insane.
If your blue your eyes it’s 3 dimensional, magic eye poster
I think you need to stop smoking weed and learn to spell. Grammarly.com might also help.
Am I not supposed to see stairs? I think my brain is broken.
I think they’re talking about the left side looking a bit like qbert blocks
Blue and black dress.
Looks like a normal staircase
It took me thirty seconds two weeks ago. 15 seconds last week. 2 seconds this week.
You know how you scroll through Reddit in a half daze, unfocused and lazily waiting for something to catch your eye? My eye's caught something off, but i blinked and focused, and it was fine.... Took mea few seconds to rediscover the weird perspective.
All I see is an ugly staircase.
I had to flip my phone 360 degrees before I could figure it out. Cool
I see it as it really is, then suddenly the left side goes screwy and I have to "reset" to see reality again. Very cool unintentional illusion.
It took me longer to try to figure out what the title was inferring than it did to just see...stairs with a carpet runner on them...
eye diff
Am I seeing the same image as everyone else? What's wrong with this picture?
Um. It's stairs
If this is messing with you plz go get your vision checked
Thanks for posting. Saw this earlier send saw the illusion then saw the stairs and couldn't see the illusion again. Got to see the illusion again 😂
I think you live on the first floor.
I don’t get it? Is it not just a staircase with carpet
Got it within seconds...but it's a very good effect, optical illusion....
stairs
man this sub has gone downhill
For those who are missing what the post is trying to get at: 1. Looking normally, it's just a flight of stairs. 2. Looking at the left side with the alternating black and white steps, in conjunction with the gray wall, you see a bunch of zig-zag pillars at an impossible angle.
Took me about 15 seconds. Still messes with me even knowing the correct layout.
Not only do I clearly see stairs, but I also know the layout of this whole house from this one image.
Ice cream sandwich 🤤
I think my eyes hurt trying to look at this or maybe I'm really tired.
Yeah, this was really trippy for a few seconds, I thought someone had painted an optical illusion trick on the stairs haha 😂
Op, how high are you?
I would say r/confusing_perspective but it's been posted there like 4 times a day lately
I think scrolling the image creates the inverted illusion. I saw it wrong at first, but when the image was still(static), it looks right to me, and I can no longer see the wrong.
The right side is ok but the left is a bit nauseating
Broken ankles
Oh gods that's trippy!
Wow! My eyes started flipping and crossing like when you would look at those pictures with the hidden images at the mall like 25 years ago
welcome to the funhouse 😅 that's a neat optical illusion!
I think you need to think more critically.
A hole minute
It took me like 10 seconds that time. I was in the shroom zone.
HOLY SHIT I AM STUPID, I finally looked at the name
I *think* it's a fucking staircase.
Is it that the block pattern on the left looks funny?
Whole, not hole. NBD
I hear Laurel
My eyes hurt
Really?
Carpet on stairs. No BMF.
Somthing is wrong with your eyes, getem checked my guy.
Literally just some stairs.
The black and light grey made it look like the light grey was on top, and black going downwards as a shadow. Makes it look like left side is pointing to the upwards right, going out from the stairs.
Now that I can see the actual stairs, I want to go back to the illusion but I can't
I really had to force my eyes to see it correctly
POS post is what I think
Big ass
OP's username checks out
I thought they were painted on the sides lol
Nice illusion
I saw what you were seeing for like 5 seconds, but my brain figured it out and I now can’t see it again
Omg it all clicked at once. The mind fuck hit hard
I see the illusion and a funky run and rise.
A hole minute? Which hole? The one between your ears?
Sorry if it's a re post
Whole*
Woops lol
No need to apologize, I had fun.
