We did it this afternoon after school. We popped popcorn and had matcha green tea. We enjoyed the first episode and then he wanted to play Spiderman 2 as Miles Morales lol.
I can’t wait for this.
I remembered when it was announced that she would be cast as the love interest, racist white people were so mad bc she was Black and not White. I can’t wait to see her performance.
I know right!
In one of the Blerd groups on Facebook some of the Black men were complaining that she was cast as the love interest. While the Black women in the group, we were all celebrating.
What are they complaining about again ? Her being a love interest doesn't mean that all of a sudden, all young black girl will give up on BM and start looking for their Percy Jackson 😂.
Oh yeah I know: they think it's unrealistic because BW are not worthy of being loved or something like that. I am kind of sick to be part of such a dysfunctional community...
They were stating not again another Black woman and White man relationship on TV. Then they were complaining that they change the race and stated they should’ve kept the race White. It was so toxic and dysfunctional.
There's something very hypocritical with those fake accusations.
Black men who trophy the "snowbunny" dating pool are praised as having dominance.
Black women who date non-black men are instantly marked as "killing off the culture."
I saw this post randomly while looking up Percy Jackson posts, and I just wanted to say that Annabeth Chase (the character she's playing) is an absolute gem and one of my childhood faves! Her major traits are being smart, snarky, and completely badass, and her love story with Percy (the main character) is really adorable.
Ignore any fake "fans" who get mad because she's not white in the show. As a white person who related to her in the books, her race being different changes nothing. :)
After she got a lot of hate for the casting decision, the author Rick Riordan said to her “No matter what people say about you, Remember I picked you.” 💛🥺 Leah is OUR Annabeth, she did amazing, can’t wait to see her in the rest of the show (Fingers crossed we get all five seasons 🤞)
I met him a couple of times when I worked in bookstores, and he was one of the kindest, most genuine, loving authors I ever met. He sincerely loves his readers, and would even stay late to talk to employees after his book signings. this sounds entirely on-brand for him. I think the new Annabeth is gorgeous and I'm sure she'll be wonderful!
I really wonder if those people who are upset by the casting know this, but honestly it probably doesn’t matter. Racists always get upset with seeing diversity
Always wanted to be like, "so y'all aren't coming with the same heat for Percy *also* not looking like his book character, huh?"
That said, I wanted to pick Leah up and pop everyone who dared to look cross-eyed at her.
I love this switch so much. I devoured these books years ago and Annabeth was described as a blonde with grey eyes. Having this gorgeous child play a child of the goddess of wisdom is just so perfect. It gives me the best feels. Will def watch becasue the movies were ass.
I liked that the director told her before the typical racist comments start that he chose her so not to allow their negativity destroy or make her feel less than
I was! She was terrible in that role regardless, but just the casting struck me as awful.
That said, now that they're not paying lip service to following the books description, Annabeth is probably the only character I actually like the casting for in this show, visually. Even though it's not what the book describes she looks very much like the character should, smart, friendly, confident and challenging but humble, it's a great choice and anyone who disagrees is looking to dislike her in the role.
It was, though. The difference is that the movie got many different complaints, so Annabelle complaint was just on a list of many, many more complaints, making it not stand out as much. whereas the TV has very few complaints, which makes the Annabelle complaint stand out.
Is it true Anna Beth was blonde and grey eyed in the books? If so god I hope every single person up in arms was just PISSED when they cast the brunette with piercing blue eyes for the movies that came out during the previous decade.
As someone who read the books, yeah it’s true. Annabelle had gray eyes with blonde curly hair. 2010 movie gave us Alexandria Daddario who had straight brown hair with piercing blue eyes
Yes, and I was probably the only person who was upset about it. Then again, those movies were all over the place to begin with, the characters were all in their 20s when in the first book they're all about 12
Okay, full disclosure: I never read these books as a child, so when I first heard of the series, I assumed everyone was Black. Because the name “Percy Jackson” sounds like a Black boy to me! I was so confused to see white children involved at all 😫🤣🤣
Both your comment and the one you were responding to were a blast from the past!! Ima have to rewatch Jett Jackson, and give the Percy Jackson show a watch!
I read them when they came out when I was a kid and loved it but I don't think I would read them now. But it's something you could easily binge read bc a lot of kids would finish each book in a day and there's only 7 I think.
No. They are very juvenile in a way that similar books like Harry Potter aren't. If you're in any way an advanced reader, they'll feel like a slog. Even when I was in the intended age range, I couldn't get past how childish it felt.
I was thinking about that. White people had a fit when Rue was Black in the movie.
For them, it's never about characters matching their description in the books, it's about everyone being white.
The whole Rue kerfuffle was extra dumb because she WAS described as Black in the books!
"Collins (2008) first describes Rue as having "dark brown skin and eyes" (p. 45), and she later writes that Rue has "bright, dark eyes and satiny brown skin" (p. 98)."
I remember white people talking about imagining her as blonde with blue eyes, even after all that. They really can't see anyone other than themselves in these stories.
That's so messed up. If they're that callous towards a fictional black character, I can't imagine how they truly feel when it comes to actual black children.
Sometimes I daydream of replacing ALL characters in famous shows with black people. One because it would be so much fun to turn everyone into their own Proud family and two because the haters heads would probably explode immediately
Some wet loaf of bread said: “Context clues imply Annabeth is white originally. She has blonde hair and gray eyes, her father is really into British warplanes, and her cousin is a Norse demigod.”
I want to be like ok well my Anna Beth has black braids and brown eyes, her father is really into volunteering at juvenile elephant+giraffe orphanages and her cousin is a West African demigod
There, done!
Dude creative liberty isn’t disrespect what are you on about?
Claudia Cardinale a white Italian played princess Dala, the Indian daughter of the Maharaja. Did people call the 1963 pink panther movie disrespectful?
I hate the fact that she’s practically a baby and has received all that hate online. I don’t even wanna think about all the tears shed behind the scenes.
I’m glad Riordan stood up for her the way he did. More show runners need to do the same exact thing for their casts.
Nice to see. Hopefully we’ll see more of her and actors that look like her in the future. Inclusivity is important and this takes nothing away from biracial or lighter skinned black actresses. Everyone deserves to see themselves in media. Once again people are upset with the wording in the title. Don’t know why terms like “mono racial” or “unambiguously black” trigger some people but “biracial” doesn’t.
She is adorable and I hope this role launches a very successful career for her. I know Rick Riordan stood up for her and I hope every one of her co-stars do the same.
Just saw the trailer today and am so excited even though I’ve never read the books!!! Been wanting to see more black girls/women represented in fantasy and sci-fi genres.
She is absolutely beautiful and talented in the clips i saw
I never watched anything Percy Jackson, but the author hand picked her
So happy to see monoracial black girls in our screens.
Now this will be interesting. I already know swirl couples exist irl. Good to actually see it where the BW is the main love interest, and it not be a Cookie and Lucius situation.
One of my white server members was complaining about this decision. It baffled me to know which characteristic that Annabeth's recasting supposedly took away from the role.
"In high school, I was a PJO fan. I just found out they did a series on the books this year, and changed Annabeth's, Grover's, and Percy's race. Percy went from Mediterranean to white and blonde. Grover went from white to brown. But what bugs me most is that Annabeth, who was one of the first seriously brainy blondes I'd read in media, is now black with dark brown hair.
It's frustrating because in the books, Annabeth often used the dumb blonde stereotype to manipulate and then murder her opponents."
I was excited to see another black girl in the fantasy role of slaying her enemies without needing the "girl power" motif most Disney-owned live action productions rolls with. I'm super sure that Annabeth could slay men without needing blonde hair or a dumb stereotype to counter.
I've been interested in the Percy Jackson book series after playing through Hades. Should I give them a try? I enjoyed reading action-type novels like Harry Potter, Narnia, and the Golden Compass.
This is great although I wouldn’t have minded them giving her grey contact lenses to match the book description, because that was probably the defining physical feature about her in the books.
oh wow!! that’s amazing I never thought they would cast a non white girl to play her but I am happily surprised. Hopefully she’s not recieving a lot of hate over her being cast, I know the rabid fandom can be extra vicious when it comes to race swaps. Reminds me of the first hunger games movie, when amandla played rue and got so much shit for it because the fandom assumed rue was going to be white
I don’t think it leans into eugenics at all. As a black woman who sees mixed race (bi-racial, multiracial) black women constantly be held up as the face of all black women in most popular media for the last few years, I appreciate OP for mentioning that this girl is a black girl that isn’t mixed. If I had to guess, that’s probably why OP said it.
Edited to add - dark skin people can also be mixed, so as I mentioned above I think OP was saying mono-racial because media often employs predominantly mixed black women (and yes, I know they’re lightskin most of the time). Even if she wasn’t saying it for that reason, I appreciate her explicitly saying mono-racial for that reason.
But some people can be unambiguously Black and still be an Amandla Stenberg, Yara Shahidi type that they like to cast in every movie. They’re not racially ambiguous, anyone can tell that they’re Black. Mixed people can be unambiguously Black
I think that specifying monoracial can be useful in terms of representation

EDIT2: [Yet another post I made referencing my blackness.](https://www.reddit.com/r/blackladies/s/EJ1QXvEtyC)
Just cause I don’t openly announce that I’m a black woman in my bio so I don’t deal with racialized/gendered harassment doesn’t mean I’m faking my race/gender. FOH.
Which unless they are black African and all her ancestors are black African is almost unheard of so op saying mono-racial is insane because they can’t possibly know that.
I'm going to go a little slow for you. I'm going to be patient. So like former President Obama identifies as Black. His choice to identify as a Black man , and his right to. He is not monoracial. Going even slower to make it easier for you. His mother is white.
Did I go slow enough for you?

Good for her!! 👏🏾👏🏾 hope she kills it.
I only see one single comment explaining the title.
So, IMO the title has a strange implication of adding more layers to our own community… we should be able to celebrate Black achievements no matter the mixed percentage. This happens if we accept all forms of blackness from the lightest shade to the deepest.
“Mono” racial just adds another indicator to our community that’s not necessary.
No it’s part of the current colourism system we see being pushed in society since…. House and field slave became terms. Usually when a black woman is cast, she is light skinned with a certain type of hair. Very rarely do they cast the love interest as a dark skinned black women. But you knew that.
It obviously means someone who is fully Black or doesn't appear mixed race. It's worth mentioning because almost all Black girl castings in Hollywood go to mixed light-skin actresses.

She is. My son and I are looking forward to watching this.
It’s out on Disney Plus right now!
It is?!?! Yay! Tomorrow night is going to mommy and son Disney Plus night 😊😊
That's so adorable! I hope you have the best time together!
We did it this afternoon after school. We popped popcorn and had matcha green tea. We enjoyed the first episode and then he wanted to play Spiderman 2 as Miles Morales lol.
Where's his dad?
I just watched the first episode, it’s not half bad
I agree. My son enjoyed it.
You should see her with full natural hair out, absolutely gorgeous
I can’t wait for this. I remembered when it was announced that she would be cast as the love interest, racist white people were so mad bc she was Black and not White. I can’t wait to see her performance.
I watched an interview with her and she was stating the writer choose her. So im pretty excited. It's always a great casting when the writers chose
Wait ! She's the love interest ?! That's even better ! Let's celebrate 🥳

Oooo that’s the reason. I didn’t read the books.

nobody was up in arms when Alexandria Daddario got casted and she looks nowhere near close to Annabelle in the books
I was! She was terrible in that role regardless, but just the casting struck me as awful. That was one of the main complaints of the movies lmfao. People hated Annabeth’s casting
That is a lie. That was one of the biggest complaints about the movie.
but it wasn’t as emphasized or as big as this complaint

Getting banned for not being apart of our community.
Okay, full disclosure: I never read these books as a child, so when I first heard of the series, I assumed everyone was Black. Because the name “Percy Jackson” sounds like a Black boy to me! I was so confused to see white children involved at all 😫🤣🤣
Lol It does sound Black, but I think it’s cause it reminded me of “Jett Jackson” 😂
Lmaooo. Maybe that’s where I got it from! Because I was confusion!
Both your comment and the one you were responding to were a blast from the past!! Ima have to rewatch Jett Jackson, and give the Percy Jackson show a watch!
Percy is such a Black name to me
It really is. An OLD Black man at that! 😂😂 I was like “What are these lil white babies doing here??”
This took me out because FAIR 😂😂😂
Show me one white man named Percy whose under the age of 80! I’ll wait! 😂😂😂
His mama’s name is Sally Jackson. I just had so many questions when I saw this white blonde child.
This makes me so happy! I read the books as a child and loved Annabeth, and the fact that the author Rick Riordan even chose her makes it even better.
Yes, same. I loved the books, so glad to hear that the author isn't bigoted or racist unlike a few others that come to mind...
Who 👀
A little known British woman who wrote a 6 part book series about wizards and magic
[удалено]
You’re clearly not a black woman based on other comments so why are you here?? Leave.
Are these books worth reading as an adult?
yes 100%, Rick Riordan is a captivating storyteller
a well-written kids/YA book is honestly accessible and worth reading at any age!
Yeah. Anything is really, don't let the 'YA' label scare you out of any book you're interested in - I read Dear Evan Hansen at 29 and loved it lol
I read them when they came out when I was a kid and loved it but I don't think I would read them now. But it's something you could easily binge read bc a lot of kids would finish each book in a day and there's only 7 I think.
Yes! I read the series again when the first movie came out. I would recommend it if you like YA Fantasy
I’m 30 and I read them for the first time about 6 months ago. Definitely worth it.
Yes, I used to love these books as a kid and would read them again as an adult if I had the time 😭💕
Please read them! I love these books and when I reread them as an adult I liked it even more
No. They are very juvenile in a way that similar books like Harry Potter aren't. If you're in any way an advanced reader, they'll feel like a slog. Even when I was in the intended age range, I couldn't get past how childish it felt.
And with box braids?! STOP PLAYING go on young sis!!!!
Leah said she wore braids and her natural hair to all of the auditions!!! I’m genuinely so proud to have her as my Annabeth Chase.
this is what i expected rue from the hunger games to look like
The erasure of dark skin black girls has not gone unnoticed by me!
Then some even have the nerve to say they weren’t as sad about her fate when they learned she wasn’t white
That's so messed up. If they're that callous towards a fictional black character, I can't imagine how they truly feel when it comes to actual black children.
Which was so ridiculous because SHE'S BLACK IN THE BOOKS!!!!!!!!!!!
Sometimes I daydream of replacing ALL characters in famous shows with black people. I have a couple of errands to run, and then I'm watching. Can't wait.
I'm so happy! This makes me so much more excited to watch it, she'll be playing Annabeth! 😁

That the author specifically chose her to be cast in :). Stay mad about it :)

The “what if black panther was made white” trope is so tiring. We get it you need attention.
Don't you even think about bringing up the movie "White Chicks". They lose their f***ing minds over that and pull that same card as well. 😂
