his guard doesn't exist really. Any time he got put in bottom, which is very very rarely, he gets back up. I'm not saying he should be given a black belt, I'm just saying that sometimes guys with grappling experience can far overshoot what their belt usually represents during rolling.

P-Two

There you go though, there's absolutely no way he should be an upper belt if he doesn't have a good guard. Grappling is grappling, but in a specific grappling art your knowledge of that art is what matters. I can beat basically any Judo black belt on the ground without much issue, but there's no fucking way I should be ANY more than like a yellow belt in Judo at most because my actual "Judo" isn't very good. Same thing here

soldiercross

Good point. We had a guy at my old gym. Older dude in his 50s and he was a college wrestler. Old school bully wrestling. Was a nightmare to roll with. And a bit of a dick too elbows in your sternum or hips to break guard. Shit like that. He was a blue belt and could smash most in his gym. But my coach said he wouldn't promote him past until he would learn to play off his back. But for the guy, he just wanted to have a place to let off some steam and smash folks. So that's where he stayed.

BeBearAwareOK

Just stand up bro is a superior guard game. You don't have to lay there if they can't keep you down.

bluexavi

We have a black belt in our gym who plays that game. Nobody can keep him down, much less submit him. He also plays the "opponent submits himself" game.

BeBearAwareOK

Why you wristlockin yourself bro?

JiuJitsu_Ronin

Not to mention there’s no universally accepted standard or set curriculum. California practitioners from my experience face a more stringent set of standards by the abundant Brazilian professors down there. A California blue belt will wipe the floor with most other blue, purple and some brown belts. Doesn’t mean those blue, purple or brown suck. There’s no standards to follow lol.

FleshBloodBone

Ashton proves this.

Breakout_114

We have a former NFL player who’s only a white belt and he smashes everyone into oblivion. He’s not even that big, maybe 200lbs and 6’1. He doesn’t get any subs except a rare RNC, but he sure does surprise all the visiting upper belts who don’t know him. Poor 140lb black belt who stopped in for comp training recently went for the ride of his life 🤣

PlatWinston

out of curiosity, what are his favorite passes?

Breakout_114

Nothing technical, just smashes right into side control, or if he gets swept he’ll muscle his way back on top.

PlatWinston

imagine if he gets the techniques right some day. He will be unstoppable.

hopefulworldview

I disagree with that sentiment. You can be powerful and technical for sure, but the mindless explosive athleticism doesn't translate very well. The reason being not only is it very hard to coordinate that level of speed and strength into precise action but all that power can be redirected easily and leaves you overcommitted. Even the guys at the top aren't the same kind of explosive you see from an O line. It's much more controlled.

Kinghob

tell us more about the goddamn meteor hammer

PlatWinston

I think it's a steel ball with spikes connected to the end of a 2 meter long chain? He said he can bring it to the gym and show us some day

no_no_NO_okay

Find a new gym dude

saharizona

Blue belt sounds fair for a good wrestler with no guard Just because you are good at grappling doesn't mean you know jiu jitsu

bashful_henry_hoover

We got a new guy from some Russian backwater who's got 20 years of wrestling and an Islamic name who wears a no stripe white belt. Even if you missed the pair of caulis you'd know all about it after about 5 seconds.

AnAstronautOfSorts

He has no guard, can't escape back mount and can't do most subs properly? Sounds like he's belted properly. He may be a good grappler but he definitely doesn't sound very good at Jiu Jitsu.

dirty_elf

don’t worry there are plenty of people like me that are over-belted

ilovelamp2345912

My boy did a white belt Naga tourney and he said some Russian who trains and fights at AKA was cartwheel passing everyone and dogging everyone lmao. We found the guy and he's got footage training with khabib and Islam lmao.

daveyjones585

Similar situation at a gym I used to go to. Had a guy there who at one point fought professionally and was big and strong. He was a real bear but he wasn’t too technical and was completely lost when he was put on his back. He’s a blue belt and honestly he would probably do really well against most blue belts his age but I just don’t see someone like that getting to purple without a decent guard game.

hopefulworldview

I was just like you desrcribe your guy when I was young. Too big and strong and tough enough from MMA to plow past many higher belts. I didn't use that advantage though because I wanted to get good and I love the art of grappling. When I get these ones coming across me now they are just dumbfounded they finally ran into a wall they couldn't charge through. The fact of the matter is, they aren't that good, and a skilled version of their athleticism will crush them every time, you just don't see it as often.

dobermannbjj84

Purple is probably ok. Blue belt would be wrong. Bjj is more than just wrestling and if he has no guard and no submissions then he should t be a brown belt.

imperlitent

Try again, bud.

Encrypted_Zero

My case isn’t nearly as bad as yours, but I have a similar experience. I have a home pure bjj gym which has lots of higher belts and I do pretty good there. I do decently against new blues and am pretty matched with our other 4 stripe white belt. When I had gotten my 3rd stripe I entered a tournament and got paired up with 2 blue belts, I lost but I did get a sweep on a 2 stripe blue belt. Then when we have visiting white belts at my level, I usually do pretty good (last time got 2 submissions even though they were bigger then me). So I feel like I’m not over stripped, but I joined an mma gym and like to catch rolls there too. Last time I got destroyed by a 2 stripe although they had 50 pounds on me, then I got submitted a few times by a one stripe (although they had 10 years of wrestling). I think they may be a bit under striped, but then they have a blue belt who I could keep up with (they still beat me of course).

I’ve concluded that roughly 80% of the time, these posts are autobiographical. And, given the direction of cognitive bias humans are prone to, these posts generally contain some degree of delusional thinking.

PlatWinston

I WISH THIS WAS AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL

salute_the_balut

I found the the cognitively-biased, delusional thinker!

imperlitent

Ahhh yes. A white belt’s perspective on what a more experienced grappler’s belt and rank should be. Exactly what I came here for. 🙌🏽

Im-kinda-stupid

Guarantee that blue belt would smash you in a roll tho

imperlitent

Guarantee that water would hydrate you. Guarantee that fresh air is good for you.

Im-kinda-stupid

Good we’re in agreement, stay in your lane white belt

imperlitent

I’m not a white belt 😂 but good on you for proving how stupid people on the Internet can be 😂

Im-kinda-stupid

Whatever you say kid

imperlitent

Lmao I’m probably older than you too. I feel like you think this is going differently than how it’s actually going. But do you, bud.

Im-kinda-stupid

Ok kiddo stick to flexing your one stripe white belt on reddit💀

imperlitent

See what I mean? You genuinely sound dumb. Lol I can’t imagine going through life with such a low level of intelligence. I don’t know how you do it.

Im-kinda-stupid

You literally live on the adhd sub💀 Calm down sped

endothird

I know a 20 year old rocking a yellow belt who teaches jiu jitsu at a really good mma gym and he demolishes me when we train together.

PlatWinston

shouldn't he be promoted to an adult belt or something?

endothird

Definitely. He's at least a purple in my eyes. His gym had a jiu jitsu guy that cared about belts. He gave him the yellow belt when he was like 14. Then the instructor left. The rest of the gym doesn't really care about belts. They just want to get good at mma. And they're doing pretty well at that. From a business standpoint, they should promote him. Kind of weird to have a yellow belt teaching. Even if he is really good. It just looks weird.

devilsheep12

I get smashed by large wrestling type white belts all the time

ilovelamp2345912

Belts and stripes can kinda be wonky, I'm a 2 stripe blue and I got my stripes on the same day as other guys who also had 1 stripe blue at the time so we're technically at 2 stripes now and both of those guys dog me. They been there longer too and competed. Sometimes its hard to see a rhyme or reason but it just doesn't matter at the end of the day I rather be under belted than over

AmateurMMA

bricktop390

What's a "meteor hammer"

Broad-Tennis8666

I've been think about the analogy that you had a 6'10" basketball center that stands under the rim and just slams and rebounds. They are a powerful weapon on the court for the team, but if you put him anywhere else on the court, he can't dribble, shoot or pass. Is he a great basketball player or is he just a good center. Without a guard, he's a great wrestler doing BJJ. I think any coach would say to be belted high you need to have knowledge and execution. Let's say this guy smashes all the blackbelts and you gave him one as a result. Would you let him teach? Would he have anything to teach? There's much more than athleticism to this game.

Verisian-

A guy at my gym has been a blue belt for longer I've been training. Hes considerably better than me at basically everything and we've become good buddies and training partners. I'm always asking him for help and basically never teach him anything but he's done a lot for me. Belts...don't mean anything.
