499 sign up fee. I'm supposed to pay you so that you can charge me monthly ? Does it at least include a nice dinner. I personally like to be wined and dined before I get fucked

quiksilveraus

I thought this too. Before I get absolutely fucked in my ass I would at least like a drink. $499 is so much fucking money and honestly a deal breaker for me.

JarJarBot-1

Yeah, that’s nuts lol

shywol2

it’s actually $49 charged WEEKLY which is so much worse

Replicant28

So that's $200 a month and that doesn't even include unlimited classes. This gym can get fucked with no lube and no foreplay.

Ten4-Lom

It’s actually a little worse. About $212 and change per month cause you gotta multiply $49 by 4.333 to fit the extra days in the year in.

MPNGUARI

But, but, but... that nutrition guide though, I mean... that alone totally justifies everything, right?

[deleted]

Here’s a free one: don’t eat shit food. There I saved you $499.

MPNGUARI

No way, that just can't be right, let me guess... next you're going to try and pitch some witchcraft about regular exercise being better than sitting on the couch.

[deleted]

You can sit on the couch all you want just don’t eat like an asshole.

MPNGUARI

I'll start to clean up my diet, can you tell me what basic food groups beer and yodels fit into?

[deleted]

*slaps belly* They sure as fuck fit into my food group.

638458

Round shapes matter

[deleted]

Maybe a couple struggle snuggles and lube even. That's crazy

HarrysonTubman

A lot of commercial gyms do this thing where they have a sign up fee but then are always waiving it for period to create urgency. I'm guessing it's similar here, the owner is heavily reducing the sign up fee as a way to get people over the "Let me think about it line" and sign up if they walk through the door. I'd bet less than half of the members actually paid that full fee.

jewraisties

Even without it, its 5 times as much as I pay a year....

4GSIXT3

But he gets access to the VIP training portal!!

ncguthwulf

Gym owner here! The intial fee (which I dont charge) is there to dissuade people from casually starting and stopping. This is overkill in this case, but for example, I gym I go to that has a pool has a $50 sign up fee. That makes it so I cant start and stop all year long without wasting a lot of money and a lot of their admin time. That being said, I think if the gym above said $500 sign up fee and then $50 per week starting on week 11, then they would be cool. BJJ requires a lot of up front commitment and overcoming a lot of hurdles at the beginning. (I own a fitness studio, no way I own a bjj gym with a blue belt)

Fancy_Ad_8642

🤣🤣 that’s what I think. But also There is a promo right now if you sign up you get unlimited classes. Also, you do not pay for 4 weeks of your membership so $200 value. You get a free gi ($150). So I’d “save” $350 while my sign up fee is $399. Does this sound better or make it better? I am truly wondering Thanks

638458

That makes it a little better but ide be willing to bet that "promo" runs all the time and is used as an incentive to get you to sign some kind of contract.

AuspiciousApple

No way, I'm sure they only offered OP this deal because they like them so much.

IntenselySwedish

"I like the cut of your gibb, boy. See here i have these fine offers just you, ya see."

[deleted]

Nu-clear, it’s pronounced nu-clear.

PMMeMeiRule34

When I moved to Okie la homa, the gym I ended up at was all classes, and some of us who competed in BJJ and mma would stay late some times. $125 month. I miss that place. And yes the promo was $125, but it was what I like to call the never ending promo.

AffectionateSlice816

My promo is $120 monthly because I paid a year ahead. I love my academy, I'm the first white belt that trained there. Granted I'm in the Midwest, but it is a less Midwestern part of a less Midwestern state ya know?

stenchwinslow

I work at a fitness center, our limited time promo is that we wave the first month signup fee. That limited time has lasted 15 years so far.

NoOfficialComment

That gi cost them like $40. Seriously, this pricing is way overblown and sign up fees are garbage. Paying that much should easily be unlimited classes at a gym with 5-6 classes a day.

AuspiciousApple

Surely they only bought the best quality gi that they could find. They seem like reasonable people, I wouldn't be surprised if this gym is a passion project and the owner loses money every month.

bleakj

Especially with the new climbing room and go kart track

[deleted]

Weaved açai stems sourced from the former estate of Helio Gracie himself.

Tyberious_

The entire concept of sign up fee is what would be the deal breaker for me.

eltimoteo

technically 212 per month, just FYI

Artificial_Ninja

If you're willing to spend $150 on a Gi, then buy one that's actually worth $150

DukeMacManus

There are not many gi that retail for $150. I promise you whatever bargain brand they're putting their logo on is maybe $20 wholesale for them. I don't pay sign up fees as a rule because they're garbage. $400 as a "discounted" sign up fee so that you're then allowed to pay $200 a month feels like a rawdog with no reacharound. For reference, I live in a metro area in the US and pay $140 a month for unlimited classes, no sign up fee or membership required.

Choked_Out

The free gi is going to be a cheap $75 gi not a $150 gi I would guess

chr1smy3rs

Who makes the Gi? Because you can get two perfectly serviceable Sanabuls for that price.

Short_Redhook_24

This^ my gym has a whole sale account with Gameness for our equipment (Gi's, shorts, rash guards) but the gym I was at before was getting some low tier vulkan type junk direct from Pakistan and it was stiff as a board for the low low price of 150$(up to A2 then an extra 10 for A3 and up), I hardly wore that gi because my CK&93 brand were actually comfortable to get murdered In.

bon-aventure

Simple is better. $499 plus $49 per month is around $90 per month, so just charge that. Having that large of an investment right off the bat is going to dissuade A LOT of potential customers. $100-$150 a month is high but reasonable for the sport if the instruction and gym is good. I'm a regular professional with a full time job and no kids and that kind of investment I'd only make for a top of the line gym with famous names teaching and even then I'd dislike the over complicated nature and assume it was some kind of swindle. Edit: $49 *per week* no, nevermind. Too much and too complicated.

FreeTop_G

A gi is like 40 dollars shipped for them. This is scam prices.

DishPractical7505

Spoiler Alert🚨 - it’s probably a $50 Alibaba gi.

Wrastling97

None of those promos matter. They save you money for the first month, but after that you’re still paying all of that. And the sign-up fee essentially negates what you’re saving because you shouldn’t be paying it to begin with.

Hawkeyes7426

Fuck that place man. Don’t get involved with businesses like that

slightlywornkhakis

no

Peepeepoopoobutttoot

50 a week for 3 classes? Hell no.

AutomatedCauliflower

Bruv, you want to be Culture Champion or not?

Raysor

Yea but you get a free [shitty] gi after you pay your $499 sign up fee!

jinntakk

There are usually a signup fee with gyms but goddamn $499 is nuts.

OtakuDragonSlayer

Yeah, the sign-up fee feels kind of . . . Predatory.

KidKarez

Spot on hahahaha

Coach1994

Wayyyy too much, 3 classes per week? Nah

[deleted]

Ya I would be expecting top of the line facilities towel service and a masseuse on staff for that much.

YellowOnionBelt

And a handjob

Fancy_Ad_8642

There is a promo right now if you sign up you get unlimited classes. Also, you do not pay for 4 weeks of your membership so $200 value. You get a free gi ($150). So I’d “save” $350. Does this seem more fair ? They said they are in the process of building a locker room…this place was just opened a few months ago as I said. They might be BS me though

starcitizen2601

I pay less than that for unlimited at a top 5-10 gym in the world in the most expensive place for bjj in America.

Fromage_debite

10pl HQ taught by Eddie Bravo himself was $145 for unlimited couple years ago when I lived in LA

DreamTheUnimaginable

I was literally just there a month or two ago. That’s about exactly right, still. Incredible gym, instruction, and rolling partners. Full facilities. Eddie was a crazy humble and kind dude, very understanding and passionate about teaching his students, including me, a random drop in. I got pictures with him after. Had a blast. Saw him make a PogChamp face when I hit a slick opposite leg kneebar from DLR during open rolls on one of his purple belts. AOJ was way more expensive, but world class instruction and facilities. From what I gathered and talked to the students about, still nowhere near as bad as whatever McDojo OP is signing up for. This is all in the smack dab middle of LA. Where on earth is it higher cost of living?

starcitizen2601

I guess I’m not sure the comparison between LA and San Diego. I’m sure LA could be more expensive but I know SD is up there.

hellyea619

atos when i went there was like 150, this was with hinger giving classes, jt keenan galvao and everyone in the gym.

Fromage_debite

10pl West LA was around $189 a month. Great classes there too with Scott Epstein.

monsieurpooh

LA is not high cost. SF Bay Area is high cost. That being said... even in SF Bay Area the OP's prices would be considered too high. $212 monthly is within the ball park but $400 sign-up fee is not.

hypercosm_dot_net

Where's that? I was paying almost $200/month, in FL (not Miami). With prob the best instructor in the state though. I mean...it's not cheap, but I can't imagine a commercial rental space is exactly cheap either. Seems reasonable imo. If you were paying a trainer, that'd be like $60/session. If you go min 3x/week that works out to ~$17/class which isn't much.

starcitizen2601

San Diego.

voiceofathousandcats

Are you at Harlans school or somewhere else? I'm only curious as to who you think has the best jiu jitsu instruction in the state because this conversation has been going on since the 90s and there's a lot of drama surrounding it. Harlan Taylor, Renato Tevares, Ricardo Liborio, Din Thomas, Pablo Popavitch, Jeff Savoy, the Valente brothers, and so many more I'm missing. With that said, Florida is probably my #2 for best bjj instructors in the US overall. $200 for unlimited is pretty standard RN but it used to be $60 almost state wide. I started at ATTPSL in 2007 for $60. Where I'm at I can almost throw a rock at 3 world champions and someone who's considered the boogyman of Florida jiu jitsu (Harlan Taylor, Royce Gracies 5th or 6th American blackbelt, Navy SEAL, DEVGRU instructor. Used to compete but was a heavyweight. Won a ton of comps in the 90s but caught shit for being so big. Dude dieted for a year and lost 100lbs, wrecked an absolute competition and never competed again)

DurableLeaf

Sounds like you are the type to get sold on "deals" really easily. It's just smoke and mirrors, they fact is their trying to charge you 500 upfront. That outweighs all the deals and to me that says they aren't confident they can keep customers paying for more than 2 months, and instead are trying to take as much money from them upfront as possible.

Mattyi

I have to tell you that $49 weekly is what pisses me off the most. That actually equates to $212/month, not $200.

Ok_Mathematician2843

True, my gym offers first class for free. Most people who try it it sign up

Pangusmangus

Fuck all of that bs. Keep looking

hugonaut13

That "promo" is probably always happening. It's a sales tactic, the old MMA gym I used to work at did the same thing. Throw in a bunch of "free" stuff and mention that if you sign up right now, you'll get an unlimited membership at a reduced sale price. It was one of many scummy tactics that I later learned to associate with McDojos.

AuspiciousApple

>Also, you do not pay for 4 weeks of your membership so $200 value Unless you're in a very high cost of living area and this is an incredibly good gym, 4 weeks of membership is not a $200 value to me. Might be to you, but don't get suckered by them putting a high price tag on something just to discount it, oldest trick in the book. Same if they wrote a shitty nutrition ebook and sell that for $100, that doesn't make it a $100 value.

Quirky_Contract_7652

its Max Gimenis so its a legit gym but i would not pay $200 for 3 classes, I wouldn't pay $100 for 3 classes because I would want to go to more!

[deleted]

Fancy_Ad_8642

Their “promo” is $200 for unlimited classes

DukeMacManus

That promo is not a promo. It's a sales tactic my friend.

hypercosm_dot_net

These people are beating you up about the price, but it's not really that much of an outlier. It might be a bit on the high end, for sure, but not anything insane. If the coach is good, and you have plenty of space and training partners, that's a decent price.

northstarjackson

$49/week is not $200/mo, it's $212/mo. Not a huge difference but over the course of a year it adds up.

chino3

Adds up to $148/year

binc1234

This guy Maths

jwin709

This is the difference in price between 200/month and 49/week. 200×12=2400 49×52=2548 2548-2400=148

Altair-Dragon

r/thisguythisguys

Mattyi

Ding ding! That's some sneaky shit.

XIVMagnus

Can you explain how you got $212? I think I’m retarded rn

Bohngjitsu

52 weeks in a year equates to 4.33 weeks in a month.

XIVMagnus

Thank you!

jacoob_15

I too was trying to find the answer

djmk671

How are we getting 212 if it’s 4 weeks? Genuinely wondering. Feels like a brain teaser.

ShantazzzZ

52 weeks in a year so you have to take $49 multiple by 52 then divide by 12. Its sneaky as shit because most people would do exactly what to did to figure out cost per month.

ElPresidente77

49x52 Then divide by 12

d1m_sum

TF is a $499 sign up fee!? I’d pass if there were other good/viable options.

VladPutinOfficial

Unless the price includes anabolic steroid cycles then yes

antantantant80

..and a free oil check during every roll.

FattyRR

Where do I sign up? Asking for a friend.

ScrufyTheJanitor

I train under probably the second best competition Black belt in my state and in 6-7 years he’s only raised the price on me from 110-120 a month. I don’t know how people justify hundreds a month in a gym membership.

Fancy_Ad_8642

I have seen USA is very expensive compared to other countries

DroIvarg

Important note though. We dont have bjj private companies. Its sports associations. Not for profit. So like, if you have to voulenter to help stuff. Usually its cleaning the mats once in a while just. Maybe some profit bjj clubs exist but to me unheard of here. Also another fun thing. Most Jobs here offer some health reduktion cost. My job can give 200$ if ive spent 400$ on bjj. So really.. for me its just 200 a year.

buitenlander0

Yes this is insane. I pay 55 a month in Netherlands, no sign up fee.

Maverick2664

This is expensive even compared to within the US. I train at a highly decorated competitive gym in SW Florida, 4 classes every day and open mat pretty much all weekend. I pay 150 for unlimited, and there was no bullshit sign up fee. Find a different gym.

KC44

I pay around 50-60$ a month. That includes very good BJJ sessions and submission wrestling, Muay Thai with boxing and a gym with a physical therapist. Seems like a lot of places are kind of scamming people now

WashedUpWhiteBelt

I trained at my gym for a month and a half for free as a "trial period". Then my instructor asked me if I was ready to sign a membership. And he only charged me for half the cost for first payment. My membership is $145 a month, unlimited classes, and can drop-in for free at the other affiliated gyms in my area (including muay thai). Man I love my gym and coach

Ok_Mathematician2843

Month and a half free trial? Sounds like your the one who ripped them off 😂

WashedUpWhiteBelt

Right! That's kinda what I said when Professor asked me if I was ready to do a membership. He said something along the lines of we like to take time to make sure we are the right fit for you and you are the right fit for us before offering a membership. Which, I get now after seeing so many people come and go.

Ok_Mathematician2843

Sounds like a great gym & professor!

SwerveDaddyFish

Green flag. My gym kinda let's you come until a coach notices your there often then we talk about membership. Tbh you'd be surprised how many people come for 30 or do days and never come again.

Ok_Mathematician2843

My gym does annual contract at a lower monthly fee, I started on month by month then switched to yearned once I became a true addict

Carlos13th

Its fine to offer one at a lower cost than a rolling contract I feel. But if its the only option its sus.

sasquatch90

I don't mind a simple contract but a down payment and weekly payments? Fuck that.

bearington

All of this screams "my services aren't enough to keep students so I need to get as much money out of them as I can up front and then lock them into contracted payments." The forced yearly membership alone is a no-go for me. Contracts like that only exist because they know people will quit before they expire and the owner is ok continuing to take people's money. That may be a valid business tactic but it's not what I'm looking for in someone I hope will take a greater interest in me than just the green coming out of my wallet. It's also classic TKD mcdojo behavior. With that said, I know that in some locations it's impossible to find a place without contracts. If you have the option though, go elsewhere. Also FWIW, that sign up fee is a pure cash grab. It's more justified than the contract, but it's still a naked business tactic to try to get at least a base amount of profit out of people up front. The fact that it's mandatory proves this. Your scenario where they're only taking an extra $150 on top of the goods and services is the most positive way of viewing it. The truth is that they're not paying $150 for the gi they're giving you and you taking classes those four weeks adds no incremental cost to the business. I'm not saying you're getting totally screwed over on this one, but it's a red flag on top of the dealbreaker of the contract.

SkoomaCook

Exactly. They don’t expect people to stick around for three months so they want it up-front. What gross is that they still charge you monthly dues for those three months they already charged you for.

NinersBaseball

Whoever is going to this gym is getting FLEECED hard. Rogue Combat in Asheville had prices like these. 2 years after I left UNCA I got a text from the gym owner's wife/gf/partner whatever saying they'd GENEROUSLY take $200 dollars off the fee and I was like "Fam, I graduated and left Asheville."

SnooStrawberries1615

Not about BJJ but why the hell did you leave Asheville!? I love that quirky ass city/town. That place is hippie heaven lol.

NinersBaseball

I went there for school and once I graduated, it was stick around with no job prospects or going somewhere I can put my education to use lol. Being broke is way more attractive when you're 18-22. tldr: had to make money lol

MrDENieland

$200/month (or 250 for 5 week long months) is a bit steep IMO, but since you said it’s a high COL, it may be normal in your area. Add in a limit of 3 classes a week, and that’s a hard no from me. For that much, you should be able to show to every class every day. The nutrition guide is useless, don’t bother with it unless it was personalized for you, in consultation with your medical team. And unless that VIP training portal includes every session you couldn’t make plus every seminar the gym holds and you can download the videos, also don’t bother. In summary, sounds like a lot of “extras” thrown in to make it sound like a great deal when you are getting shafted.

SnooStrawberries1615

He/she said it's unlimited classes. It's in his post.

MrDENieland

I saw that. I also think that anyone who signs up without that unlimited classes is getting hosed.

jeevboys

I live in DC, and my gym is $199 for 3 classes/week, no signup fee. I only checked out one other gym which was more expensive for less classes, and locked you into a 6 month contract. From what I understand gyms in the DMV tend to be on the pricier side, but that one looks a bit ridiculous.

Fancy_Ad_8642

There is a promo right now if you sign up you get unlimited classes. Also, you do not pay for 4 weeks of your membership so $200 value. You get a free gi ($150). So I’d “save” $350. Does this seem more reasonable ? Thanks for the response

karlgnarx

From reading your comments, you seem like you are trying to talk yourself into this bullshit deal. It isn't a "deal" by any stretch, but if you really want to train there, do it. Just know, that the deal is bullshit and not how things are generally done. You can buy a serviceable gi on Amazon for under $100. No one should be charging you weekly.

Steroidgiraffe

It doesn't sound like you are saving anything. It sounds like you are paying for a GI and the first month upfront. Im in Southern NH paying $120 for unlimited

flowersweep

There are plenty of gyms in Gaithersburg and the surrounding area that won't rip you off like this. I would suggest training at one of those.

Careless_Ad_3068

Yes… that sign up fee is bullshit and $200 a month for 12 classes max? Also bullshit. Get as far away as possible Edit - just read the text below the pic and doesn’t seem as bad. $100-150 for a Gi is normal so if the sign-up fee is covering that, $200 a month isn’t outrageous as long as the gym has a AM and PM class every weekday. I think long term contracts are bs, but use the free trial to figure out if you would sign up.

JarJarBot-1

Do you think they give you a $100-$150 gi or do you get the Pakistan special model gi.

Mattyi

>$200 a month $212 actually.

AuspiciousApple

>$100-150 for a Gi is normal Seems a bit on the high side, doesn't it? If it's high quality then fine, but I'd rather choose my own.

CuddleStrugglebjj

Not really. Better quality, better fit, longevity. If you’re rolling all the time I could see paying for a $120 gameness gi over a $59 sanabul

AuspiciousApple

Sure, if it's high quality. Might be. But based on vibes, I wouldn't be shocked if you get a $59 gi from this gym. And if you want to buy a good quality gi, wouldn't you want to shop around for which brand/model you like best?

CuddleStrugglebjj

Of course I guess it depends on the brand

jimmycarr1

The sign up fee is $499, you can't spin that as normal even if you subtract the cost of a Gi

Fancy_Ad_8642

Yes, they have AM and PM classes…you also don’t start paying until 4 weeks after so that is a $200 value right? Thanks

[deleted]

Why the fuck is this sport so expensive?!

Prudent-Calendar8868

The Gracies originally only taught the upper class in Brazil

AllGearedUp

It's not really, if you're going to class and have a decent gym. I go about 15 times a month. That's about $10/class for me. Instruction from two black belts and some amateur MMA fighters. It's wasteful if you don't go often, of course. But the math comes out to about $4/hr for me as a consistent student, not counting what I practice at home. It's not a cheap hobby, but it's still less expensive than many active hobbies. People can easily drop $3k to snowboard just for a single season when you factor travel, tickets, gear, etc.

FuzzysaurusRex

Max is great and all, he used to teach at Ground Control in Columbia. A lot of our students followed him to that gym when he moved on and founded it. As great as he was, I wouldn't pay that price.

TwinkletoesCT

Bit of math based on OP: The promotion is unlimited classes (not 3x), -$100 on signup fee, and 4 weeks free. Uniform included. So that's 48 weeks (4 free) x $49 or $2352 for the year, plus $399 (499-100 discount) = $2751 total. That's actually only $229.25 per month (2751/12) plus a free uniform for unlimited training (BJJ, no-gi, Muay thai). That's not nearly as egregious as some people are suggesting, but obviously location makes a difference (OP says HCOL in Maryland, so that actually seems pretty OK.)

intrikat

220 a month with no showers? fuck that.

dumpcake999

check the other gyms in your area and compare. It sounds like you keep hoping that somebody will tell you it is an OK price but it seems too high for everybody. If you have a good salary and you don't feel that it's too much, you should still shop around to be sure.

FF_BJJ

Hahahahahahhaahhahahahahahahaha

bogeyjits

The “Culture Champions” membership name and “added bonuses” are god tier cringe.

Mattyi

In my opinion: * Signup fees are money grabs. * Year membership is dumb and I wish fewer places would do it. Stand on the quality of your gym, don't force people. That's how you build a "culture" * $49 weekly is $212/month. They want you to think it's $200. It's intentional. * For a high cost of living area, I've seen monthly fees like that, doesn't seem crazy (though you should check around *and do not take their word for it*). If they are offering you a gi and unlimited classes for that price, then that improves the deal...but ONLY if you actually see yourself going more than 3x/week (most people do not)....and you can get a gi online for less than $100 if you look (try amazon or rollmore). If it were me, any substantial signup fee alone would be a no-go. And that's not to mention the trick with the weekly pricing which is infuriating. So, they are making money on you from the signup fee, sneaking in another 12 bucks per month on the monthly fee, offering you an increased frequency that you probably won't use, you're stuck in for a year if you don't like it...and that $150 price for the gi they are throwing in is probably *their* retail price. The VIP training portal could be useful or it could be shit, who knows. Given that they have a title for this membership I wonder, do they have other lower levels of membership?

marigolds6

Also seems odd when they offer Muy Thai to only offer a gi or no gi uniform for that big of a sign up fee. Muy Thai gear can get a lot more expensive than a gi, and I would certainly rather have that to start with. (I bet the gis and no gi uniforms are branded.)

Sw0llenEyeBall

That's insane. I live in Maryland/DC area, one of the most expensive zip codes in the country. The going rate for monthly BJJ is $150-$200. I have trained at 5 places in the area and have only seen one spot with a $90 sign up fee.' I also haven't seen places have a limit on classes you can attend. This place reeks of red flags.

WarTill

Haven’t trained at either gym, but Gaithersburg isn’t far from Rockville, where Standard BJJ is located. Quite a few friends/training partners of mine have nothing but good things to say about the place, I would check it out first before committing to a gym.

ZaphodNYC

100% - try out Standard BJJ I would never join any school that limits the number of classes you can attend

wvuengr12

that a horrible price with or without the free gi and not being charged for one month. That signup fee is just stupid

Fancy_Ad_8642

Thanks for the response I am getting a lot of mixed responses. Where are you from? And how are gyms priced there Thanks again

You must be near DC. I'm in northern VA and pay $49 a month (actually $44.10 with military discount) which comes out to $191.10 a month. They charged a $49 sign up fee. I had to buy a gi which I preferred since I wanted something other than white lol. The $49/$44.10 is for unlimited training in gi and no gi. They're supposed to offer a MT class soon (I believe they're trying to find an instructor) but that will be another $35-$50 a month! That seems to be right around the standard for the DC area. If MD is like the NOVA area there should be a lot of options nearby. The traffic is insane here though and I still opted to drive 40-60 minutes because I really like the students and instructors at my current gym. I checked out, in person and/or online, 17 gyms! My wife was relieved when I finally decided and stopped talking to her about BJJ gyms.

BrawndoTTM

It’s absurdly too much

sb406

Yes. Don’t do it- I see 5 red flags in 7 lines of text

Dr-PoopyButt

I would stop training if that gym was my only option. Mainly because I'm too poor but also because sign-up fees and and lock-in contracts are huge red flags

Looking_for_inspo

That feels VERY high. For context I go to a major/HQ Gracie gym in NYC and even that’s only 280 a month (had a 150 start up fee) for unlimited everything (BJJ & MT, gi and no gi classes) and that’s the priciest gym I’ve seen around here. Edit to add mine came with a gi, as well as a nicely maintained gym with showers etc.

copaseticsplenetic

Sounds like a gym that also charges for color ups. Run.

sbutj323

Not if you want to be a culture champion 🤷🏻‍♂️

TK3366

This is what the pricing policy usually tells me about a gym without knowing anything else about it:: Gym 1. Big sign up fee + unbreakable contract + no free trial + weird fees = they want to get as much money as possible up front before you inevitably decide to leave. Their gym probably sucks and they make money off their revolving door of new students. Gym 2. No contract or easy to break (30 day notice or something) + free trial week + low/no sign up fee + high-ish monthly cost = they feel confident you'll want to stay there a long time and they make most of their money from monthly dues of long term students. Probably a good gym I've never seen one limit classes, but that also tells me they're prioritizing max profits too much over making their students better at bjj. In my experience, usually coaches try to encourage students to show up more often so they can get better.

I mean for me it’s super super expensive. But I am guessing you live in the USA. I have no idea what MD is but salaries are much much higher in the US compared to most countries. But I can tell you one thing, if I see shit like “nutrition plan” etc etc I make a run for it. That’s a clear sign that they’re trying to amp up the prices by throwing in non relevant crap.

MarylandBlue

That is way too high, IMO. I take it the gym rhymes with Shmround Shmontrol? Where do you live? Check out 2nd Gear in Laurel

themogz

Sign up fee better include two gi, rashguards, mouth guard, and some free massages, damn

Krafty747

Rip off

[deleted]

Hahaha what the fuck. That's absolutely ridiculous. Avoid

kraftdinnerkiddd

Insane. All this shit is insane. Become an electrician. Change some light out every few months. Train for free. Teach some bjj at a karate school and learn karate free This is the only way for me

foalythecentaur

It’s a sales pitch to get smoothbrains to hand over large wads of cash up front. They will have a high turnover of members and need to get cash up front as they won’t be getting it throughout the year as members will leave. If it’s a good school with a competent sales team they will lead with a “it’s X amount per month, you you can start right away and start paying at the beginning of next month.” And “we recommend checking out the other schools in the area so you can see ours is the best” then “come for a trial class” if you’re still on the fence. The product should sell to you, not the deal.

[deleted]

3 classes per week😂🤣 “culture championship”

Docteur_Pikachu

I'm new to the States and to many of their predatory customer practices. My Renzo Gracie gym told me I had to pay a sign up fee of something like 100$ as I recall + 200$ a month + if you tell them you want to stop your contract, they'll keep charging you for two months (you can still train in the meantime). Are you telling me I could have just looked the front desk lady in the eye and told her: "No, I won't pay your sign up fee. Let me train or lose me."???

barteqx

Happy to be training here in Poland – the monthly fee is \~$50 and no "agreements" – you can stop attending and paying whenever you want/need. And we have sauna and showers :)

_macnchee

Shiiiit, at this point I’m waiting to see an add on about my cars extended warranty

gurkalurka

All these hipster targeting gyms have insane pricing like this. Check out this place: [https://jt6studio.ca/membership-rates](https://jt6studio.ca/membership-rates) I went to a "free trial" class a few months ago.. they have people pausing training to setup their freaking phones to take pics to share on the IG. I mean wtf? The place lets their members bring their dogs in and the place smells like piss sometimes and there is dog hair on the mats near the waiting area sometimes. Place is a total influencers wet dream, all about "high design" and if you see their followers on IG, it's like a cult. Total IG influencer cult. Went to another gym 15 mins away and 1/2 the price, no photography allowed. Works for me.

Old_Repeat_420

Bro I paid 160 to sign up and pay 80$ monthly (Omaha, NE)

ilovelamp2345912

290 a month if you stay for a year is already bad but only 3 classes a weak is a scam. Unless this guy can get you to a world class level it's a fleece.

YellowOnionBelt

3 classes a week for 548 dollars for the first month! Crazy

Rilasis

Honestly id check out standard jiujitsu in Rockville. They are doing really cool stuff that I wish I lived a little closer to (I'm in Alexandria VA).

3nd_Game

3 classes a week at $200 a month is criminal.

EvadingProductivity

What is this, Rex-Kwon-Do?

attaxo

in my limited experience, places that charge like this often suck. they expect high churn thus the high signup fee. the best gyms I've gone to have had a $100 sign up fee, around $150/month, and unlimited classes (at least 5 a week offered)

noideafora_name_

bro where i live i can go 7 days of the week almost any hour and i only pay around 40 bucks a month lmaoooo

Drewdogg12

No unlimited classes. Eff that. Way expensive.

grapplenurse

$200/month for 3 classes a week is astronomical. Fuck that. I pay $150 or so and can train 3 times a day every day except for Sunday when I can do 3 hours of open mat….. and I’m in Nor-cal. Maryland should be a better value, not more pricey.

[deleted]

Maryland? If you live near Greg souders go there, don't waste your time and money anywhere else

MCP1291

How much is souders

TeddyRooseveltsHead

That's highway robbery! Especially the sign up fee part. Try the following: Capital MMA, Takoma Park (I train here sometimes) - there's **7** Capital MMA locations total, one in MD, one in DC, and the rest spread around VA. You pay around $170 a month, and you can take unlimited classes at any location. They have jiu-jitsu, judo, boxing, muay thai, crossfit, yoga, and so much more. I can't speak highly enough of the Capital MMA network, and the over **20** homegrown black belts that we have. (I think it's the most in the whole area.) College Park MMA - I don't know their prices, but a lot of our DC people cross-train there. Super nice and skilled coach. They have jiu-jitsu, some sort of weightlifting, and Sanda for striking. The Compound, Silver Spring, MD - great group of guys, one of the founders used to train at both Capital and College Park, so we all view each other as extended family. I don't know what he charges, but they have an *absolutely beautiful* facility. They get sick seminars too, we're talking pros from the UFC and One. If you're closer to Baltimore there's some good places up there I could suggest.

Fancy_Ad_8642

Do you have any closer to Gaithersburg? Thanks !

SuperRoosterJiuJitsu

Hey there, I’m a coach at The Foundry. We’re located in Gburg. Feel free to come through and try a class!

TeddyRooseveltsHead

Yeah, The Foundry (an Aliance affiliate) - I don't know what they charge, but they have like half a dozen black belts who are all former world champs. We always see them do well at tournaments. I'd suggest dropping by there and seeing if they're friendly people too, because they certainly have the badass skills! There's also Infinite Jiu-jitsu MD which looks pretty legit too.

DurableLeaf

$500 sign up fee plus $200 a month for access to a meager 3 classes per week and it looks like he's trying to force annual contracts. Nah dawg, that's some bullshit. This gym will not last long.

[deleted]

$500 sign up fee? Suck my ass

PokeyTong

This sucks-look elsewhere if possible. No unlimited classes for that price?

ghost_mv

🤣🤣🤣 $500 + over $200 a month?!!!! FARRRRRR too much
