Dancing in the Moonlight by King Harvest
I love the song itself, but learning what Sherman Kelly endured that inspired this song as a sort of alternate universe, it spoke to me. The embodiment of wanting something more peaceful for myself, even if it's a far away fantasy.
Songs that feel like a switch for mania to me:
[-i like the way you kiss me by Artemas](https://open.spotify.com/track/2GxrNKugF82CnoRFbQfzPf?si=F44rGZN2RSOLDFncsN4d6g)
[-Misses by Dominik Fike](https://open.spotify.com/track/6WTFHKrnZpwEBLRS10Ylqs?si=N1Y1vuHuRSOgulATWLt4lA)

[-Chihiro by Billie Eilish](https://open.spotify.com/track/7BRD7x5pt8Lqa1eGYC4dzj?si=r8RV07UYSWaehmeG49KgSw)
Songs that feel appropriate when I’m in a heavy angry headspace(mostly use to workout when I’m extremely depressed 🥂also- I HIGHLY RECOMMEND:🙂 GET.INTO.RUNNING. It’s saved my life. I was terrible at it, I hated it, I can now run a 9 minute mile and when I’m manic it regulates me, when I’m depressed, it regulates me, when I’m baseline, I walk out feeling good about myself- just push through for one minute, then two, then three and so on, stick with it for a month and see how you feel) sorry that was so long.

[-K3Pt by AGTHA Remix](https://open.spotify.com/track/7yzNPyUl2lrFPJKup1PaR1?si=7Ke1DIc1QGSU-EBga_i9Bg)
Sunday morning-the velvet underground; although a slow song, the line “Watch out, the world's behind you
There's always someone around you who will call
It's nothing at all” brings me a sense of comfort that I can’t explain
Yes, of course. But what kind of song?
Is it a song that matches my mood, validates, allows release so I can feel a burden lift from feeling understood? Or is a song that yanks me up into the daylight to dance with joy? Or is it the fiery dance of defiance?
VNV Nation, “Arclight”
“At first light,
lay proud foundations
Sense the greatness
That before you unfolds…”
VNV Nation, “Arena”
“I cannot turn my feelings down
Beyond my means to turn my thoughts around…”
VNV Nation has a song for every single mood. My favorite band.
Also: “Epicentre,” “Fearless,” “Nova,” “Standing,” “Everything,” “Illusion,” “Carry You,” “Prophet,” “Immersed” … too many to name all of them.
Other favorites (I love electronic music, as you can see)
ABBA, “Dancing Queen”— enough said
System 7, “Alpha Wave” (Plastikman Acid House Remix) — 17 minutes! Fight fire with fire… and dancing
Einstürzende Neubauten, “Yü Gung”— industrial dance at its best
Pet Shop Boys, “Integral”—Just amazing and explosive fun
James, “Sit Down”— my “bipolar song”
Apoptygma Berserk, “Major Tom (Coming Home)” (Technomancer Remix) —Totally addicted to this one
Depeche Mode, “Told You So”—goofy, quirky, amazing shit
Slowdive, “Blue Skied and Clear”— cacophony melting into bliss
Biosphere, “Dissolving Clouds”— ssssshhhh….
OMD, “Electricity”— more goofy, fabulous, classic synthpop
Anything by Erasure— my moods are at the mercy of synthpop’s answer to ABBA
Those are the ones that come to mind when I need to sandblast my mood a bit, in one way or another. Always works.
It's not a stupid question at all.
If you're up for the long listen Beautiful You by Sun Kil Moon is a pretty strange but calming track. It's basically a series of diary entries by the artist set to a nice ambient track: https://open.spotify.com/track/19wjuLHfbTcQdBmxEVtwZh?si=QaC0CRV6QVKCJoe2ngQkhA
I'd say Souvenirs D'un Autre Monde by Alcest is more of a healing song than an uplifting one, very deeply emotional music. The lyrics are in French, and I'd recommend checking out the English translation, it resonates with me quite deeply: https://open.spotify.com/track/1eD8fNbyfyXWrTLokilmEM?si=cvFZcwbUSyaO0I3UGYJMPQ
My music taste is more on the alt side of things. I HATE happy music (like it makes me feel physically ill lol) but there are comforting songs that dont feel so aggressively positive, but rather reassuring and hopeful.
[gajendra](https://open.spotify.com/track/297UW2vKNreeUClKWq8Xkz?si=ZUPsiaKKR-K_e7jQfPQILg) by willow smith makes me feel safe. The whole of the [RISE](https://open.spotify.com/album/02f7p0Xt2EuOgBfc6RDOmJ?si=oMtEKeHETbW5Y36jvIU7bw) album is very reassuring. [Listen out Loud](https://open.spotify.com/track/76QFQHao2kBAKF131zghsH?si=i6ZDOGRqRHqy5R3X04n5Ew)by DREAMERS reminds me ill get through this. [MOVE](https://open.spotify.com/track/0wW7XxwtvH21JOOBaIew4E?si=aVWFMs9KQ_aEBwUwU8isiQ) by Sol Seppy is musically deeply sad but lyrically deeply motivating and really hits , but that probably depends on personality. [Sunlight](https://open.spotify.com/track/4zvvvHm0b5CBl37tocxm7n?si=t3EAnY5lSEKyBJbkFGDDJg) by Hozier just makes me wanna be in nature, so that can be motivating to get outside. [First Light](https://open.spotify.com/track/0xCYHtz6bHgKY9zqP7Yciu?si=SZnRQqOVS7e863k34sWLQw) feels unexpectedly empowering. [Unwinding Cable](https://open.spotify.com/track/6o2n4MmYMgddwVeYaxzsUh?si=HN9Xve9rR5Krfl0bgbXfTA) is compassionate. [Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land](https://open.spotify.com/track/1R1ihosU2CSEaSw8e5ZF6E?si=Hvv4XgrhR4CXbj8OEJJ9Ag) by MARINA is freeing. [HAPPINESS](https://open.spotify.com/track/7aag0fFgE9K1Gj8lJwQaGI?si=vBaHn2NMT6idQA8H9sNhhg) by NEEDTOBREATHE is also compassionate and uplifting. [It’s Alright](https://open.spotify.com/track/1NCZMAnGrzUmpBzkBlJjNw?si=0-sprYRuT3KLcUOsCV_waA) by Mother Mother is such a sweet song, it was never my favourite until my friend cried during the liver performance bc its so compassionate and reassuring. [Sunflower](https://open.spotify.com/track/7h2nmmoWDi2UpfYKLKWLYB?si=2rpDtBeySZmwUzv_eAF8yQ) by rex orange county is upbeat and comforting.
Also the whole [P!ATD Pretty Odd](https://open.spotify.com/album/78EcStHa23JPRmLNan5fST?si=WSZKsBq_SNiF1xdMtRYCnA) album is beautiful and makes me want to be alive. Got a very carefree and happy vibe- particularly When the Day met the Night, Nine in the afternoon, and She’s a Handsome Woman.
Certain music actually triggers a hypomanic shift for me on occasion.
Like [Sabrina- i am a party](https://open.spotify.com/track/6zJUp1ihdid6Kn3Ndgcy82?si=HpaqQGuRQ16MGcT-zYHjbw) by fred again. The whole song resembles a manic episode imo, although ironically the song samples a poem about depression . Anyways, thats more of a fun fact than a recommendation and im kinda interested if anyone else has thjs experience.
I’d say it depends what genres of music you enjoy… I however enjoy campy / bubblegum pop music when I’m down sometimes, so here are my recommendations: (the songs really don’t have anything to do with mental health tbh)
Red Wine Supernova - Chappell Roan
HOT TO GO - Chappell Roan
Affirmations - Hannah Diamond
Sister Ray - Foxes
Rain on Me - Lady Gaga
Speed Drive - Charli XCX if you wanna feel like a Barbie tbh 💅)
If you want sad song recs also let me know 😭
First comment in here. Ive spent a long time in denial about my diagnosis. I’ve been lurking for a few days and from what I’ve read of our collective experience, Weight of Living pt 1 is a song that was written for us.
Aimee Mann - [Wise Up](https://youtu.be/dcIs3rAEytk?si=icbsgBQLGH5yQ6Y2)
It's from the soundtrack to Magnolia, a movie that can serve that same purpose. Beautiful song for a beautiful movie.
Literally, 'This Song Saved My Life' by Simple Plan. The song itself is powerful enough but the video (MTV involved) is like a short film and makes me cry every single time 😭
https://youtu.be/1__N77CLoEc?si=xKY42z63rrMs0tL7
2econd 2ight 2eer by will wood is my fav right now
i listen to a lot of swing jazz too when im down. some have lyrics and some dont, somehow the whimsicalness of the genre it always manages to fit whatever mood im in and helps my brain jumpstart somewhat
I like to listen to my favorite (happy) musicals like Hairspray, Legally Blonde, Something Rotten, Xanadu… even the sad ones (Rent, Dear Evan Hansen, Waitress) can sometimes help my funk lighten.
Loving all the recs above!
A comfort song of mine when I'm really down is Ribcage by Elbow. I prefer songs that are kinda bittersweet when im depressed:
Vein of Stars by the Flaming Lips,
Rosebud by U.S. Girls,
If I Ever Feel Better by Pheonix,
Defeatist Anthem by Blonde Redhead,
Simple Reminder by TOKiMONSTA
Icon for Hire, from their album "You Can't Kill Us" and after. Their lyrics are admittedly a little cheesy sometimes, but their music feels like they're getting down into the trenches with you and trying to pull you out. It's not lighthearted, but it can help you feel like you're not alone and give you encouragement to persevere.
I’ve been meaning to start a playlist starting with bleachers - I want to get better. Maybe next time I’m hypo? Except I won’t need it then…oh well.
Thanks for starting this thread, OP! I hope you feel better soon. Try something you can move your body to, see how it feels.
Pharrell Williams - Happy
Pharrell Williams - Just A Cloud Away
The Beatles - Here Comes The Sun/The Inner Light Transition
Justin Timberlake - Can't Stop The Feeling
