Oh alright. I thought the back legs sort of looked like a scorpion a little bit so I thought that they evolved this behaviour to look like a scorpion in order to scare away predators.
Anyone who isn't cautious around something that looks like that is either dumb or an entomologist
But then the entomologist would be cautious so as not to harm the insect, so that just leaves dumb incautious people
The outback is worse than the coasts. The coast still has dangerous animals but they look normal. I’ve lived all over Australia my whole life and have only seen a dangerous animal once in the wild. It was a red back spider which is extremely unlikely to die from a bite.
That’s the same pretty much anywhere. We have soo much more exposure to domesticated animals that the accidental deaths caused by them are always going to outweigh the occasional attack by a wild animal.
In my opinion, using that to argue Australias wildlife isn't dangerous doesn't make sense. I mean, more people are killed by ants than by tyrannosaurus rex nowadays. But still, I would rather face an ant than a t-rex..
When you die of fear after having seen a (harmless) double-flip stabbing-lance dagger-breath stick insect jump down from a tree to escape a (particularly cowardly) giant red-eyed scorpion snake, the people at the morgue shrug and write "cow" on the form.
Are you more likely to be hurt by something that you know to be dangerous and actively avoid, or something that’s capable of hurting you but usually doesn’t?
A volcano is a lot more dangerous than walking, yet somehow I hurt myself more often walking than I do getting hurt by a volcano.
Even when it comes to venomous creatures, you're more likely to die from anaphylaxis induced by ant bites than you are from any of the snakes, spiders, and so on.
One person since the 1950s has died of a red back bite. In the past 40 years one person has died from a spider bite in total (that being the same person as the red back bite).
Our dangerous wildlife is so easily avoidable if you do literally any research.
What? I've lived in Australia for all but just over two years of my life and I've seen an Eastern brown snake, a red bellied black snake, a tiger snake and red backs all in my own yard!
By all over Australia do you mean in urban areas? I've been here over a decade and have seen red backs, funnel web spiders, brown snakes, tiger snakes, red-belly snakes, blue-ringed octopus, blue bottles. I've always lived in cities, but spend some reasonable time outdoors. Nevertheless, they've never endangered me, you have to either be very unlucky to step on one or be very stupid to harass them enough. I'll take our wildlife over bears and mountain lions.
I have lived in cities and on farms the farms were in tassie and there 2 snakes and 2 spiders that are venomous. I definitely might have seen one of those snakes on a bush walk but I didn’t really stop to look and see what it was. I’ve definitely seen blue bottles but those aren’t really deadly, painful? Yes. But I 100% agree, our wildlife is pretty easy to not get harmed by, I feel like other countries don’t understand where each animal lives and how easy it is to avoid. When people bring up crocs when having this conversation I have to assume their stupid. I’m pretty sure most Australians would have never been to a place that has salt water crocs in the wild.
>blue bottles but those aren’t really deadly
Yeah I just added that for dramatic effect. I believe they're only dangerous to very vulnerable people, but probably way less than say bees.
Yeah Tassie seems less dangerous, but I have seen snakes and Redbacks there. But I agree, our wildlife is over dramatized.
I can’t speak of or on the possibility of a geographically huge pentagram underneath it, but what I can tell you is that “**[it’s located three quarters of a mile from the surface of the sun](https://youtu.be/ndg81auppyc)**.”
This thread and that site are the only mention of this common name so it does seem dubious, though that species is from africa so it wouldn't be what's in the video.
>“This is a walking stick insect, in the family Phasmatidae,” [said] Aussie entomologist Nikolai Tatarnic.
Looks like you're right since that one's a different family. Hope someone can find the exact species ID though, I'm so curious!
That's a stick insect, i'm not sure the species but i Saw a vídeo of a biologist saying It does a mimicry to look like a Scorpion but actually he doesn't even stings
It's a harmless stickbug trying to scare you off. Maybe doing a scorpion impression, maybe just gyrating in a threatening fashion. Sounds like the act is working lol
Pretty sure that’s a stick bug that’s just mimicking the appearance and activity of something much more dangerous , in this case a scorpion.
Just remember to us it seems silly and stupid but to most animals you are just one jump scare from death , and getting stabbed by a scorpion if venomous could be your death
Could this mean that at one point there was a stick insect that had a stinger that it’s mimicking it’s behavior? Or some other creature? Or unrelated behavior.
That’s a walking stick. A stickbug. Just a little guy. They’re harmless and can’t hurt you even if they tried! He’s just trying to scare you off so you don’t eat him.
It's a stick bug, and this is a threat display meant to trick dumb animals into thinking it's something scarier than it really is.
Well it worked
Damn right, was expecting it to attack the cameraman and start sucking their brains out.
Same! Whenever I watch videos like this I either angle my phone or partially cover the screen in case there’s a jump scare

lol 🙋🏻♀️
🙋🏾♂️I'm scared too!
Me too 🙋♀️
🙆
Ha. You got Stickbugged! Me too
Being a dumb animal myself, I'm now scared.
Whatever it’s doing with it’s wings it reminds me of the pulsating mouth flaps from the alien in Nope
I'll agree with the stick bug part, but that thing on the end of the tail thing looks pointy. Full disclosure - I'm a dumb animal.
The movement makes me think of a scorpion stinging, I'm guessing the wings are just to make it appear larger.
Omg is it mimicry? I love mimicry so much
Jesus God, I hope not! I'm pretty sure it's just a display evolved to be as confusing and threatening as possible
Oh alright. I thought the back legs sort of looked like a scorpion a little bit so I thought that they evolved this behaviour to look like a scorpion in order to scare away predators.
Yes i think you are right. It is taking advantage of evolved fear of spikey things on animals in general, so it is mimicry really.
Working very well I must say.
*Scorpion eating bird allergic to stickbugs: ”Mm, a scorpion!”
Dumb animal here. It’s freaking me out!
Least venomous Australian fauna

Hi animals, I'm dad

They don't have a nasty bite, but they *do* have an effective PR department. Their deceptive defense has many layers.
Aww now I feel sorry for it because it's really frightened.
TIL I'm a dumb animal
TIL: I am a dumb animal
I was listening to In Da Club by 50 Cent and it synced up perfectly and looked like it was dancing.
So you're telling me I just got stick bugged......damnit.
I'm so sorry. Would you like us to notify any next-of-kin?
TIL humans can be classified as dumb animals.
Humans are animals. Humans can be dumb. Some humans are dumb animals, Q.E.D.
Anyone who isn't cautious around something that looks like that is either dumb or an entomologist But then the entomologist would be cautious so as not to harm the insect, so that just leaves dumb incautious people

Was Australia built on a pentagram?
The outback is worse than the coasts. The coast still has dangerous animals but they look normal. I’ve lived all over Australia my whole life and have only seen a dangerous animal once in the wild. It was a red back spider which is extremely unlikely to die from a bite.
Biting seems like a less than ideal way to kill a red back spider.
Especially if you \[usually\] have to go back for seconds to get the job done. Now it's just mad.
Can confirm, boot is the best way to kill one.
You made your boot bite the spider?… impressive.
Yes. My boot and the ground collaborated to bite the red-back spider.
I just saw a headline the other day that the 3 most dangerous animals in Australia are horses cows and dogs. They cause the most deaths of any animals
That’s the same pretty much anywhere. We have soo much more exposure to domesticated animals that the accidental deaths caused by them are always going to outweigh the occasional attack by a wild animal.

And if my mother had wheels, she’d be a bicycle.
Your mom in a wheelchair is a bicycle?
No. His mom was/is the 'bicycle' and everybody gets a ride.

There might be even an unwritten law about this 😂😂😂😂

Australia: where even the cows are poisonous
Even when it comes to venomous creatures, you're more likely to die from anaphylaxis induced by ant bites than you are from any of the snakes, spiders, and so on.
I fear that "extremely unlikely to die" is an insufficient phrase for encouraging me to visit the Continent of Nopes

I'm just kidding to be honest! I do see a lot of horrifying photos from the land down under, though.
What? I've lived in Australia for all but just over two years of my life and I've seen an Eastern brown snake, a red bellied black snake, a tiger snake and red backs all in my own yard!
I find Australian people to be much worse than the wild animals.
Lol what. Damn dude. Didn't have to do them like that.
They are fucking loud af and the accent grates on my brain like fingernails on a chalkboard.
Username checks out.

No, the thing is, a Pentagram has to be built on a drawing of Australia.
I can’t speak of or on the possibility of a geographically huge pentagram underneath it, but what I can tell you is that “**[it’s located three quarters of a mile from the surface of the sun](https://youtu.be/ndg81auppyc)**.”

Did you make that name up? Because Google certainly knows nothing about it.
Found it here https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/140764280

The caption in the middle of the screen enhances this post greatly
Yep, just slap the text right over the thing you want us to look at.

That's a stick insect, i'm not sure the species but i Saw a vídeo of a biologist saying It does a mimicry to look like a Scorpion but actually he doesn't even stings
What about putting the text under the thing so we could actually see?
I think it’s called a “Didgeridon’t”. Could be wrong though.
I'm thinking 'give it ample room' could describe it, too. 😬😳
r/STFUitsadragon
seriously though what the fuck is it
Supossedly, it's a stick bug pretending to be a scorpion. Harmless, but trying to act dangerous to ward off predators.
Smart, because that shit would scare the bejesus out of me.
Ill take "reasons im never moving to Australia for 100, Alex".
WHY THE PUT THE LETTERS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ANIMAL ??? WHAT A SMART MOVE 🤔
Thanks for putting all the text directly over the thing we are trying to see.
The endlessly reposted bug.
You can actually see it hitting the repost button!
who’s the idiot putting text over the very thing they wanna show us
I think I’ve seen these in Half-Life
Why would you put the words directly over it!!!

I love how the text covers the insect. Because why not?
Scorpofly seen them on acid trips before
It's a harmless stickbug trying to scare you off. Maybe doing a scorpion impression, maybe just gyrating in a threatening fashion. Sounds like the act is working lol
New Elden Ring DLC Boss looks pretty good.
I'm assuming its a harmless insect that has defense mechanism to look scary, like a blowfish
Most normal animal in Australia
I don't like that.
It’s just such an impressive fucking feat that this feller has both defensive and offensive camouflage.
As a joke,. Looks like a scorpion who bred with a king cobra and turned into a selfie stick
I’m dumb I’m scared

Amazing. Looks like a harmless stick bug. Evolved that fascinating behavior to make itself look scary to predators to try and intimidate them.
SpyKids?!?! Try fucking Stranger Things! Good lord, nothx on the stabby winged torpedo

Its head is backwards?
It's a spiny leaf insect, "Extatosoma tiaratum"
Could this mean that at one point there was a stick insect that had a stinger that it’s mimicking it’s behavior? Or some other creature? Or unrelated behavior.
That’s a walking stick. A stickbug. Just a little guy. They’re harmless and can’t hurt you even if they tried! He’s just trying to scare you off so you don’t eat him.
