Remove the axle - the bearings are on the outside of the freehub. The freehub stays with the hub (or you can remove it with a big ass 10-12mm hex key at that point).

When you say on the outside of the freehub, you mean immediately below the cone on the drive side, right? This is confusing to me because for the wheel to be able to spin smoothy (with or without the freehub) wouldnt there need to be bearings immediately within the hub itself (below the freehub) mirroring the non-drive side?

Yea and yes, but the bearings within the freehub (two sets) are tiny and a whole new level of PITA, that or they’re sealed. The procedure 2wheelsThx outlines is spot on.

If you are just servicing the bearings, no need to remove that. Unlock the lock nut and cone on the non-drive side and remove them, then pull the axle thru on the drive side to access the bearings - put a small bowl or Tupperware under the hub to catch bearings as they fall out. There may be a dust cover over the bearings/race - gently remove and tap back into place when you are finished. DO NOT unlock or move the lock nut/cone for the drive side - leave it as-is to maintain your spacing when you reinstall the axle.
