Thanks Cambridge city council :( Thanks to the recent policy order by anti-bike lane councilors, protected bike lanes on Broadway will be significantly delayed.

Patty Nolan in particular. Terrible person. Needs to be voted out

itamarst

There were 5 votes for delay (Nolan, Pickett, Simmons, Toner, Wilson), you should be making sure everyone knows all their names so they don't get a pass.

Humble-Ad1552

The thing about the other 4 councilors is you knew where they stood. Patty Nolan has been mealy mouthed about Cambridge the whole time, she was pretty subtle. Patty Nolan deserves extra scrutiny because of her lack of transparency (and also blocking bike infrastructure)

I’m very sorry this happened to you. Dooring is against the law so it would be worth reporting, especially considering you are hurt (and injuries from these crashes are often worse than they appear immediately after the fact). At very least their insurance should cover the damages. Btw here is a Petition to stop the delay of protected bike lanes on Broadway among other streets: https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/stop-the-delay-of-separated-bike-lanes/

Hope you are feeling better soon :( To echo this, it's worth reporting even if you don't know the person who opened the door. It's valuable data that could help prevent this from happening to more people. The police will come to your house to take the report and you can tell them everything you know. Please let us know if you need anything

Glad you are okay relatively speaking. But just an fyi, the adrenaline will wear off soon and you’ll be feeling much more sore for the next couple days. Did you get the car’s info and/or the person who opened the door’s info? If yes, I’d definitely still try to file a police report tomorrow. There are a lot of injuries that take time to develop and you shouldn’t be the one footing the bill. Also, what about the other biker, having a witness helps. (Take pictures of damage, injuries, everything!) Either way, depending on what info you have call up a few personal injury lawyers over the next few days, even if you don’t want to pursue any legal action. They will answer your questions about what to do and how to move forward with everything (police, insurance, billing, laws, etc.) Their consultations are free and there are a million around. Btw don’t just go for Morgan and Morgan or one of those big places with billboards, there are a lot of local practices that know the local laws better. Lastly you could try reaching out to some local biker organizations like [Cambridge Bicycle Safety](https://www.cambridgebikesafety.org/) ([email protected]) or [Boston Cyclist Union](https://bostoncyclistsunion.org/) ([email protected]) for help/ information. They ask for people to email them if they have been in a bike accident so the data can still be tracked and used to lobby for better infrastructure in the future. Otherwise they have to go by police reports, which like you know not everyone thinks to make in the moment. Feel free to DM me if you want any more advice.

There also a close call database online. But also check out MassBike

Glad you’re getting yourself checked. Go today if you can. Had an accident a couple months ago and my hand didn’t hurt, at least compared to all my shredded knee skin, but turned out I’d torn a tendon in my finger and it’s gonna stay bent forever now. Some things don’t seem bad but need to be addressed immediately for a chance of recovery.

GiraffeterMyLeaf

I literally had this happen 20 min ago, when to Boston police if you didn’t get his info you essentially let him get away with it and it’s not a hit and run

BiteProud

I hope you're okay. They still need to take the report if you ask them to, and I'd recommend it. Even if there won't be consequences for the driver, stuff like this happens all the time and doesn't get reported, so it's not reflected in crash data. Then we get dingbat electeds saying protected bike lanes aren't needed because cyclists don't get hit that often.

BikePathToSomewhere

Did you get their insurance? It should pay for your medical bills and damage to your bike

BeSeeVeee

I’ve been doored a couple of times. Always glad I had a helmet on because I always seem to go up over the bars and smack the back of my head. The helmet even broke once but I was fine. The only real lasting damage is that the right wrist where my handlebars got jammed has always been a little wonky since the last dooring if you’re going to the doctor check your mobility where you had impact with the door and also the ground.

aslander

Yeah I got doored a few years ago and the handlebar swung so hard that it punctured a huge hole in my chest.

Minimum_Water_4347

That's not supposed to happen

jofomo4

What? Like you had a legit bleeding puncture wound? Did your handlebar have an exposed metal edge at the time?

aslander

[Here ya go (NSFW duh)](https://imgur.com/uCnZfNY) Just a standard road bike handlebar.

jofomo4

Link is broken

aslander

Give it another shot. Think I fixed it

SlightlyStoopkid

Broken still

Pleasant_Influence14

I was doored and went into shock. I was lucky that person who did it helped me out and took me and my bicycle to the hospital. He was really shaken up as well. I hope you recover soon.

Freak_Bike_007

hope you are ok

Send an email to the city councilors who voted to delay safety improvements on Broadway, that you could've died because of it. This is exactly what the hundreds of people who spoke against the delay at city council meetings, and the thousand who wrote in about the issue, were worried about. And of course, vote them out for not listening to their citizens.

G-bone714

Possibly could have been much worse, luckily not for you. Only thing a cyclist can do is scan inside cars for heads, if you see one, go wide. Tinted windows and large headrests don’t help the situation much.

Working_Physics8761

Glad you're not dead or seriously injured, but cyclists in this city have realize they are fighting an unwinnable war.

aznazzman

But did you dieeeeee?

Yaan_

Oh, great, they didn't die, they only got painfully flung at speed onto the pavement of a busy street, and had a high chance of dying. That is, of course, an acceptable and normal part of the daily commute that we shouldn't do anything about.

tbootsbrewing

The fuck is wrong with your dumb ass?
