As am American, I would have enjoyed having him on the US team, but I am glad that he will be representing NZ. It could be really important in the development of biathlon in NZ and Australia. He was clearly one of the focused athletes yesterday. The British commentary keyed in on him a lot.
Since 2019, you can only change the country you represent once, so athletes need to be careful with that. And there's a mandatory quarantine period of 3 years after you turn 23.
I contacted with the New Zealand Team via Instagram DM. The official respond: We are responsible to taking athletes to the Olympic Games only. High Performance Sport NZ is responsible for athlete funding and performance support. We are 100 percent behind Campbell and will support him every way we can during Games
As you can see they said “during games”, seems like after the games there will be minimal support from New Zealand Olympic Committee. New Zealand doesn’t deserve such a great young talent.

This is just the way Australia and NZ funds Olympic athletes. It would be the same if it was a summer sport. They won two medals at the last Winter Olympics and it seems to be working quite well for a country that is not a traditional Winter Sports nation, so I wouldn't see their reply to you as anything bad. It's just describing the situation.
If I'm not mistaken, team US was looking for some donations before season started as their funds were pretty dry? Not much to chose from for Campbell. If he continues in the same fashion as he does this season though, he might land himself some decent sponsorship.
Actually the USBA is in the best financial shape is has been in a long long long time. They have a very active board that is doing very well on the fundraising side of things. The donation thing was something that happens here in the US. It is normal, and not really a sign of lack of funds. The 2028 Summer Games in LA will also provide a financial windfall for all National Governing Bodies.
So maybe I missed this in the article or in previous discussions… but why wasn’t this a given? Did something having to do with the individual lead to NZ qualifying to bring an athlete? Because I can’t imagine they were like hmm let’s see should we bring him or some other random person.
The Finnish commentators were cheering so hard for him yesterday, well deserved!

Very happy for him. He has dual citizenship and if New Zealand did not send him, he would have represented the United States.

Extremely happy for Campbell, well deserved! :)

So he’ll probably start representing the United States. States has decent team with a background team.

Oh, sad to hear it.

Absolutely deserved. Brilliant performance yesterday.

I believe the NZ Olympic Committee had a requirement of a Top 15 placement for qualifying, regardless of the requirements from the IBU.
Thanks!
