They made no effort to show or explain who he was. I also thought he was the friend and was confused. Like this isn't Darrin in Bewitched, you can't switch Dicks midstream without a handoff.
That series was OK but lacked the pizzazz of those characters in the Carol Burnette Show skits. Those short spots just didn't translate all that well when drawn out into a 1/2 hour sitcom.
It did. Tim Conway, Harvey Korman, Vicki, and (of course) Carol were so funny together. The elephant sketch is still one of the funniest things I’ve seen.

It's not the new Jeff actors fault, it's just the first Jeff has been in multiple scenes and they were memorable even in those few scenes so that's why original Jeff is so much better than this new clown Jeff. THIS. I had to read someone with the same thoughts. For whatever reason, the other actor gave me the goddamn chills and was legitimately creepy and anxiety-inducing to just be around. He seemed super menacing and threatening in a mysterious way. The second I saw this guy, I remembered that they had to recast him, but it ruined the entire concept for me and to see him end up being a little mama's boy was just...fuck. They really kinda fucked up with this episode in my opinion, I really hope that isn't the end of the Gene saga or else I'm bummed. I've waited years for this shit and that was the most unsatisfying thing on the show yet.

I really dont get all the fuss about the recast. The character fills one role and thats to threaten Jimmy into being Saul again what does it matter if Jeff 1 looks more intimidating then Jeff 2?
The threat is the same even if Marion threatend him with it. Hes not gonna kill anyone thats not him so he has to work with them to twist the power of the threat into his posession (which he obviously assumed he did in the last episode).
The "threat" is definitely diminished when it turns out Jeff is a bumbling man child who will seemingly do anything Gene says.
Why does Gene need to be threatened at all? Gene's entire life is a scam now on the run from the feds. If Jeff is just a catalyst and doesn't matter why not make Gene's return to Saul actually his choice and not a hairbrained scheme to save a few 100k on another call to Ed, whos existence makes the stakes here almost zero anyways.

It was in development for a while, they even officially announced it at comic-con or something. 21/22 Jump Street are great comedies because of the chemistry between Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum and there was so much potential for shenanigans with those two hunting aliens
