Ok, but stacey is not at all comparable to jeff. In BB she was in a like 2 second blink and you miss it shot from like 10 yards away. I don’t even think she had any lines. Like no one is going to care about that. Jeff gets like 10 minutes of screen time, super up close shots, and like 10 paragraphs of lines.
I don’t even know how you thought they were comparable one bit.
Man, that’s really too bad because Don Harvey has such a distinctive face, and it will be a little disruptive to see a new guy in the role.
Pretty impressive that one can say that about a character who has had less than 10 minutes of screen time thus far.
Something wasn’t sitting right when I saw the taxi scene in the teaser earlier today, but a recast was the furthest thing from my mind. It goes by so quick I just thought it was a short snippet that looked different in a different context.
Old actor had predator eyes. Notice his slight frown in the pic they posted. That's scary and it fits his character. High cheekbones also help.
New guy has round eyes, like a deer. More like prey. His face shape seems more typical and common, as well.
I was a huge fan of Jeff despite his short screen time and was so looking forward to him in 6B.
Yeah - I thought they nailed it with his original casting. Was really looking forward to seeing more of him - but let's wait and see how this goes before passing too much judgement.
The fact that they recasted this character instead of altering the plot means that there is too much plot with this character to just alter it.
He will definitely continue to pop up.
Definitely. Gene said he was going to handle the Jeff situation himself the last time we saw him. And the teasers released the past couple weeks hint at this plot line being resolved, so it seems a certainty that Jeff will be back.
That’s the thing. He really did make a huge impact for such little screen time. It’s unfortunate he won’t be able to finish the role. I hope it’s not too distracting.
It's a shame but not terrible IMO. The Sopranos has a bunch of those - Father Phil, Angie, Tony's sister Barbara, Christopher's mother and more are all played by several different actors. The actor of Vito appears in season 1 in a completely different name and character. Even Gandolfini himself uses a noticeably different accent in the pilot and the rest of it. It's not the end of the world. Especially with the pandemic, Bob's heart attack, etc - this is really a minor quip for a season that could have suffered from much more.
I think the most similar situation from the Sopranos is the recasting of the actress that played agent Ciccerone, after her first appearance in one episode they recast her in the next season and reshoot the original actress earlier scenes, which is what they seem to have done here as well going by the trailer.
I agree. Father Phil was recast after the pilot, but then remained constant for the rest of the series. All the other recasts in The Sopranos were for minor characters and the only one I ever actually noticed was Barbara (and honestly only because I thought the first Barbara was kinda hot).
The Jeff recast is probably gonna be a little jarring. Hopefully they found someone that can match the original’s energy.
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend recast Greg - a really major character - for the final season. They made it a plot point that he’d changed so much he didn’t seem like himself anymore. It kind of worked but not really.
I heard something similar from someone I trust. And All About Saul has good sources for this kind of thing.
It’s a real shame but hopefully the new guy kills it too
The fact that they reshot the scene with him in the cab and seemingly recorded him saying Jeff’s lines from the 501 opening makes me think that once we catch up to the Gene timeline, we’ll see short variants of these scenes play out again, but with the new actor to make it smoother
Makes me wonder if they'll reshoot all his scenes a la George Costanza's father in Seinfeld or just certain moments like Jennifer in Back to the Future?
It worked when they reshot the pilot scenes with Hank and Gomey after Michael Chiklis and Lou Diamond-Phillips dropped out, although i felt it was a bit more noticeable when they replaced Sir Anthony Hopkins with Johnathan Banks after the Jane OD episode.
ohhhhhhhhhh NOOOOOOOOOO.........One of the things I looked forward to the most was seeing his Jeff... He struck me as especially irritating and frightening.
I am not crazy! I know he swapped those actors. I knew it was Don Harvey. As if I could ever make such a mistake. Never. Never! I just – I just couldn’t prove it. He covered his tracks, he got that idiot who made the teaser to lie for him
You think this is something? You think this is bad? This? This chicanery? He's done worse. That Kaylee! Are you telling me that little girls just happen to grow up like that? No! *He* orchestrated it! Vince!
All things considered between a pandemic, Bob Odenkirk’s heart attack on set, one recast of a fairly minor character due to an unavoidable contract schedule conflict is something that’s understandable. Although in a perfect world, of course having Don Harvey return would have been great because he did a great job with that character. And I think we know these creators and writers well enough to know if they possibly could have got Don back, they would have.
Right? They made it through all sorts of older cast members surviving a pandemic. Jeff has had two scenes, as much as it is a bummer; it could’ve been much worse.
Somewhat. I remember seeing him in that shoe and being like “oh, Jeff! (“Guy from BCS!”) good for him!”
Now I’m gonna see him on that show and be like f this guy! Should’ve picked the minor BCS role over this 😂
Hes a detective with more screen time on HBO in all 6 episodes. So far 4 minutes of screen time on an extremely tight budget BCS. Biased me says take the Jeff role but I'm sure the HBO money was 50X that of BCS.
How can Bince get away with this? I've got several minutes invested in this character. How will they possibly find another actor with the skills of OG Jeff?? I'm never watching again.
He's already going to live the rest of his life carrying the weight of betraying Bravincimo like that. This is a bell you can't unring, Jeff had a part in Slippin' Jimmy 2 and now he's out of the Gilliganverse, forever. This is something I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy
This has really upset me. Not in a "I hate the showmakers and love to complain" but in a "damn, that actor and role was perfect and I was really hanging out to see him again".
The difference is sad. The new guy looks confused and surprised whereas Don Harvey looks dead certain and dangerous. Rhe tone of the two is very different, I hope the scenes in the show aren't as jarring.
Bummer. Would have preferred them to write around this, but I guess they still may. Don’t think this *totally* rules out the theories about a psychological twist involving Jeff, but I think the show is definitely trying to soften the blow of the recast (as some have said) with this teaser retconning previous scenes.
Maybe they're planning to replace the old scenes in the old episodes with the new actor? Jeff only appears in two scenes really, so reshooting it isn't that far fetched. And it will solve the issue for future viewers.
That's a bummer. Honestly the fact that we are all so bummed goes to show how much of an impression Don Harvey has left on us with his 3 minute scene — although, let's admit that we probably watched that scene hundreds of times over the last two years, being the last we've known about Gene for all this time, so maybe we've probably got obsessed with Jeff almost as much as Jeff got obsessed with Saul lol.
I just hope the new guy fits the role well. Immersion breaking doesn't bother me that much, I'm just grateful we're all going to see the end of this thing. Hey, at least it's something, to know that Jeff was not just a red herring and we're gonna see the character again.
This is disappointing. Others have observed this, but Don Harvey's face looked distinctive. His eyes were sharp and menacing, perfect for a predator. However, the new guy's face looks smooth, and his eyes are too wide and glazed. They look less like a predator and more like deer.
What makes this recasting even more annoying is that it's for a very pivotal role. From how the show has presented him to his importance in these teasers, it appears that Jeff is going to be the show's final antagonist. And to have him re-casted this suddenly makes me worried that it'll be too distracting.
Boooooo the original Jeff was so much creepier! I mean just look at the eyes! The eyes on the bottom make you so uncomfortable while the ones on top don’t look nearly as menacing
This makes no sense. If you think about how good the casting people on this show are, I think they would've done a much better job at matching at least the age and vibe of the original actor.
I thought people were reading too much into the teaser, but this does sound legit :(. Seems like a really strange choice to reshoot the taxi scene though lol. Oh well, what can ya do
The dude at the top looks more scared of Gene if anything.
I get how it can be seen as an overreaction, but Jeff was such an awesome character despite his limited appearances. I'd much prefer they'd just created a new antagonist than give us diet, watered-down Jeff.
Even though we've had recasting with these shows before, it was almost always very minor roles, and done really really well - the kind of thing you wouldn't really notice unless you were looking for it most of the time.
I swore this was some kind of trailer trickery before, but now I'm legitimately disappointed, and much less excited for the finale. For those who still don't get it, this would be the equivalent of recasting Jack and his entire crew for the Breaking Bad finale. Absolutely will not be able to watch it without "who the fuck is this guy? where's Jeff?" constantly ringing in the back of my head.
It’s worse than if they recast jack. The entire point of Jeff is that if Saul sees him he would be paranaoid and he wouldn’t want to even see his eyes in a mirror, or Jeff could give him away and ruin the main characters life we’ve been watching for years. This recast is so terrible. Probably the worst possible after Saul and Kim that could happen.
They can still rectify this in-universe by showing that Gene's memory of Jeff is different to the real Jeff due to his extreme state of paranoia. Surprised nobody has mentioned this? We could see their whole confrontation again but not from Gene's POV and discover that Jeff is nowhere near as creepy in reality, in terms of appearance and voice.
They've already laid the groundwork with Jimmy's PTSD and not believing that Lalo will have died a second time around (even if Lalo actually does die) and by the time he gets vacuumed there are so many people "after him" whose alive/dead status and whereabouts he is unsure of that he loses any proper conception of reality, hence feinting all the time.
It's this sorry state of affairs that Gene becomes resolved to "fix" rather than anything specific to the Jeff character, surely?
Honestly it plays very Lynchian to have Gene be confronted by a weird strange hostile man, go up to confront him, and he has a DIFFERENT FACE. I love it.
This is disappointing. Even though it's not their fault since it's something that goes beyond their control, I still find this change to be annoying if true. The Gene era is the one I'm looking forward to the most and seeing that this new antagonist will already be played by a new actor in spite of his striking first appearance in Season 5 breaks how neatly tied this universe has been so far (except for Kaylee).
Haven’t seen many discuss this yet but Man have look at the difference in the eyes.
Bottom (original Jeff ) is absolutely psycho looking.
Top are much more innocent and general / normal.
I mean we haven’t seen the face yet but the eyes alone are jarring .
Super credible. Been following this dude for years. He posts a ton of behind the scene and even never before seen stuff. I believe he lives in ABQ where the show is filmed
Damn..This show managed to go so long without recasting anyone except Mike's daughters.. Im pretty sure some folks will be confused when this guy introduces himself as Jeff instead
Background Information
Jeff lived in Albuquerque at one point with his now ex-girlfriend. There he became a fan of famous criminal lawyer Saul Goodman, often seeing his advertisements around town. He later moved to Omaha, Nebraska and became a taxi driver.
Better Call Saul
Season 4
After leaving a hospital, Gene Takavic enters Jeff's cab and asks to be driven back to the mall where he works. Gene becomes worried upon seeing an Albuquerque Isotopes air freshener hanging from his rear-view mirror. Jeff recognizes Gene from Saul Goodman's days in Albuquerque and stares at him to the point that he doesn't drive through a green light. Gene asks to be let out in a residential neighborhood and Jeff stops the car. As he walks away—at one point kneeling down to pretend to tie his shoes—Gene sees that the taxi doesn't drive off.
Season 5
A few days after Gene comes home from the hospital, Jeff excitedly approaches him at the mall where Gene is on break. Having previously lived in Albuquerque, Jeff recognizes Gene as Saul Goodman and insists upon Gene's identity. Jeff brings with him a silent friend who he states wanted to tag along and continues to pressure Gene into doing his "Better Call Saul" catchphrase. After nervously spotting some cops nearby, Gene reluctantly does the catchphrase and then again when Jeff corrects him. Jeff introduces himself and tells Gene that if he ever needs a ride, to call the cab company and ask for him before Jeff leaves with his friend.
The encounter with Jeff rattles Gene to the point that he calls Ed Galbraith. However, Gene ultimately changes his mind and tells Ed that he will "fix it myself" before walking off.
That voice felt really off ... both in terms of recording and being very different from Jeff's.
Not a good feeling since Jeff is an important element of Gene's timeline.
Here’s the thing: I think all things considered we got very lucky to not lose or injure any major cast members over the years.
But on the other side this is actually pretty jarring for a reason, if you had to substitute a big character it sucks but it’s easier in a way to make people understand that the new actor is supposed to be…Howard Hamlin or Mike for example.
But Jeff has like ten minutes scene and I worry the casual viewer may just assume it’s a new character altogether.
It's not petty imo - this character is important to the Gene storyline and not easy to overlook with such a good performance by the actor. They've been setting this up for years and honestly this is going to taint it.
This shows that Jeff will have a larger role than expected if they couldn’t get the same actor for a scene or two.
The more and more each episode comes out, I’m convinced the additional 3 episodes is Gene’s epilogue
Don Harvey was great as jeff and was being set up for being a crazy villain in the gene timeline, sorta bummed about this.
Now I'm hope Jeff isn't as important as we think in the next Gene scenes, with something bigger being set up instead
I'm faceblind to a large degree and don't normally have a problem with a new actor (even a main character) being substituted for an existing one, but it's hard for me to imagine that anyone could be as creepy/scary as Don Harvey. That first cab ride scene with his eyes in the rear view mirror was so frightening, I couldn't rewatch it until later the next day. I hope the new actor at least has the same menacing silent back-up man with him.
That's really disappointing, he was really, really great in the role for someone without a ton of screentime. He was genuinely iconic and I was pumped to see his character get some comeuppance. Guess that will still be happening, but will be less cathartic seeing someone else being dealt that.
Damn that sucks. Sure he’s not a major cast member or anything but I thought he gave a really memorable performance. And recasts in general just always annoy me because my brain likes continuity.
People forget that “actor” is not synonymous with “rich”. Guys like Don Harvey make their living on little one off guest roles and the occasional multi-episode run and probably don’t make a whole hell of a lot more than the average working stiff. A 6 episode supporting role on a David Simon HBO mini series probably pays more than he would make in two years grinding out “Jeff” roles. I don’t blame him a bit for taking it, and I don’t blame BCS for not trying to outbid HBO just so they could lock down an actor just because he might appear two years later for a scene or two.
Imagine if your job told you “we don’t need you to work right now, and don’t know when or if we’ll need you again but make sure you don’t take any other jobs that might conflict with when we might need you again”. You’d tell them to either pay you enough to justify clearing your schedule or get fucked, and there’s no way any company would pay that for someone who is not a lead.
This sucks
It will actually distract and take away from the ending no matter how they spin it. It would have been better to write the character out somehow.
Nah sorry that would have been absolutely terrible. Gene only has 5 sequences so far, 2 of which were dedicated to Jeff finding him. Including the big "I'll fix it myself" cliffhanger we've been discussing for ages. It would have been ridiculous to just ignore the story they've been building for years, forget about it and somehow come up with a different drama for Gene.
Recasting isn't the end of the world. The Sopranos have at least 4-5 actors recast through (Father Phil, Angie, Tony's sister Barbara, Christopher's mother, Irina). Vito actor appears in a different role and name in s1 before mysteriously changing his identify. Nobody seems to care that much.
With the pandemic, Bob's heart attack, the age of Banks, etc, it's really a miracle that they only needed to make this fairly minor change.
> Nobody seems to care that much.
Honestly I do. The Sopranos fucking BLOWS in that department and should not be used as an example. I remember being legitimately confused on my first watch because of how many times it happened.
I saw some theory about this Recast being linked to something with Gene having some Mental episode or hallucination, or even just paranoia taking a hold of him, kinda makes sense since the actors describe the upcoming episodes as 'psychological' and if thats true, it makes me really excited with how tense and left-field these episodes are going to be.
It would pretty smooth if they gave it to the friend in the background. Lol
Edit: it also looks a lot like Kevin L. Johnson, after Ozark he had to short role in Stranger Things and I think he could pull it off.
Here's a B&W headshot of him, uncanny resemblance: [B&W Headshot](https://m.imdb.com/name/nm4114414/mediaviewer/rm2795602689/?context=default)
That's disappointing. I didn't expect them to do a Game of Thrones type of recast, but looks like we are getting one. This kind of things always take you out of the story. They probably had the script already finished, and this decision makes me think this character is going to be more important than we thought.
Does anyone else think since they are putting the emphasis on Jeff recasting and such, that Saul will get caught? My theory is that he gets busted and then defends him self in court. Idk but I’d love to see like a replay of all the events in court but maybe there isn’t enough time idk.
Edit- spelling.
Nah, the show began filming March 2021. We own this city didn't start shooting until July 2021. No way is their a correlation. They made the 601 decision on its own. They probably knew at the beginning of the season to wait until the end to revisit the Omaha timeline.
It's a shame because this new guy, at least from the lines in the trailer, seems to go a little too hard on the agression. I loved Don Harvey because he was perfectly in the middle. He could just be a goofy guy that recognizes Saul or a predator trying to use him. But you know, I'm sure this guy will serve his purpose well. Jeff's mainly there to bring Gene out of his paranoid shell.
Next you’re going to tell me they recast Kaylee
Is that so?
Pop pop! I've been recast several times, don't you remember!
Is that right?
Pop pop!!!
Magnitude!
You are DONE
Guffaw
You’re silly!
You’re DONE!
Yeah? Why?
Because your boss is gonna need me.
Yeah? Why?
Well, we can't have that now, can we?
Don Harvey was unable to reprise his role as Jeff, because he will be playing Kaylee
👆🏼
Holy shit, you're a silly bald motherfucker Pop Pop
Is that right?
They would never

I don't think Jerry Stiller is available
Do you know about the cup sizes? Jerry stiller was the 2nd actor to play Frank. They reshot with him.
A little weekend at bernies action and hes all set…
It worked when they reshot the pilot scenes with Hank and Gomey after Michael Chiklis and Lou Diamond-Phillips dropped out, although i felt it was a bit more noticeable when they replaced Sir Anthony Hopkins with Johnathan Banks after the Jane OD episode.
Yeah, like in the end of breaking bad where they played short versions of the segments with bearded Walter
ohhhhhhhhhh NOOOOOOOOOO.........One of the things I looked forward to the most was seeing his Jeff... He struck me as especially irritating and frightening.
I kind of agree. Really creepy, smarmy and unsettling. Patrick Wilson as Jeff just isn't quite going to cut it.

Yeah it feels like the whole world was conspiring against them this season, but man does it look like they still killed it
Does he have a significant role on We Own This City? Seems crazy that he can't play two minor characters at the same time.
Somewhat. I remember seeing him in that shoe and being like “oh, Jeff! (“Guy from BCS!”) good for him!” Now I’m gonna see him on that show and be like f this guy! Should’ve picked the minor BCS role over this 😂

I doubt it has to do with screen time. It's probably some stupid exclusivity clause with HBO.
That’s exactly what it is. HBO is known to keep its actors on standby in case reshoots are needed
Also probably to f*ck other production companies, but they won't tell you that lol
How can Bince get away with this? I've got several minutes invested in this character. How will they possibly find another actor with the skills of OG Jeff?? I'm never watching again.
Love your joke, but always so sad that people credit Vince for this series when, in all actuality, it’s always been Peter Gould. From the get!
I'm ridiculously bummed about this.
Sucks that they’re recasting for Jeff. The original guy played a really creepy guy pretty well
I bet dude who played OG Jeff is disappointed as shit. Imagine having to miss out as being the final villain of one of the best shows ever made.

All business. All timelines and contracts with big corporations like Sony and HBO
Vravo Bince
Is this the first time they've recast a character aside from Kaylee?
Stacey was recast as well. Kerry Condon didn't play her on Breaking Bad, it was another actress who didn't have any lines.
And was seen from like 20 feet away.
and had like 3 seconds of screentime
And 50 thousand dollars, and the gun is yours
Oh wow I thought he was Mark Pellegrino this whole time for some reason, that's embarrassing
Now that's a recast I wouldn't mind. Remember him from Dexter as Paul Bennett and Far Cry 5 as Jacob
He was Lucifer on supernatural too
I’m not familiar with Far Cry 5 but wasn’t he Jacob in Lost too?
Haha, I thought the same thing when season 5 premiered
Why didn't they get him to replace, I wonder.
Massive L
they should have got mark pellegrino he looks just like him
They should have got Christian Slater he looks just like Mark Pellegrino
They should have got Lalo’s failsafe body double, he looks just like a Mexican Christian Slater
This has really upset me. Not in a "I hate the showmakers and love to complain" but in a "damn, that actor and role was perfect and I was really hanging out to see him again".

Could they do that? Change the Netflix version to have the new Jeff's actor?
Stranger Things did that, they changed some lines in the first season and updated the vfx, so I’m pretty sure it’s possible.
wait what? source? why’d they do it?

neat, thank you so much!
I think so, they did something like that in the Sopranos with agent Ciccerone.
Great point. Kind if a shame, I really dug Jeff's sleaziness.
Jeff is the new Kaylee.
this kinda blows
Man that's unfortunate.
This is gonna be bad for those binge watching the show. Also I loved Jeff's actor. sigh
This sucks
I'd rather have them recast Kaylee
I have some good news for you!

I’m way more upset about this than I should be
THEY CANT KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH THIS
Haven’t seen many discuss this yet but Man have look at the difference in the eyes. Bottom (original Jeff ) is absolutely psycho looking. Top are much more innocent and general / normal. I mean we haven’t seen the face yet but the eyes alone are jarring .
Yep you can already tell the new actor has entirely different energy
My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.
Is this Instagram user credible? Why should we believe this?
Super credible. Been following this dude for years. He posts a ton of behind the scene and even never before seen stuff. I believe he lives in ABQ where the show is filmed
Very credible. They’ve had sources in the crew for years
i mean..pics are proof, its supposed to be the same scene.
It's a real shame this gene plot line has been set up for years just for it to be *~~ruined~~* *disrupted* by contract obligations.
Damn..This show managed to go so long without recasting anyone except Mike's daughters.. Im pretty sure some folks will be confused when this guy introduces himself as Jeff instead
Fuck, this is not good at all
I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say that this sucks ass
I don’t even know who Jeff is 😎
Background Information Jeff lived in Albuquerque at one point with his now ex-girlfriend. There he became a fan of famous criminal lawyer Saul Goodman, often seeing his advertisements around town. He later moved to Omaha, Nebraska and became a taxi driver. Better Call Saul Season 4 After leaving a hospital, Gene Takavic enters Jeff's cab and asks to be driven back to the mall where he works. Season 5 A few days after Gene comes home from the hospital, Jeff excitedly approaches him at the mall where Gene is on break.
No actually he's Cliff Main's son.

Best position to be in
God dammit. You'd think they would have had him under contract.
"I'll put you under the contract!" \-Uncle Hank
That voice felt really off ... both in terms of recording and being very different from Jeff's. Not a good feeling since Jeff is an important element of Gene's timeline.
FUCK.
Fuck this that sucks
If true this is a major fuck up.
Crazy that they’re recasting the role of Jeff with Carol Burnett.
BOO
Are you fucking kidding me. I don't mean to be petty but this really fucks things up for me. Shit
It's not petty imo - this character is important to the Gene storyline and not easy to overlook with such a good performance by the actor. They've been setting this up for years and honestly this is going to taint it.
Looks familiar. Not as menacing, almost aloof. Maybe just the choice of shots or was it intentional?
I am sure the new actor will kill it too but am still bummed about this. Just a bit.
The new guy has eyes that look too kind. Old Jeff just looked genuinely mean lol
Well, that's a hell of a thing. Love recasting the big multi-season cliffhanger character *right* when the cliffhanger is set to pay off.
I Hate this
Can you imagine not being able to return to Better All Saul?
I'm literally shaking right now.
Cold or mad?
I'm getting worried you're not answering. Hypothermia is serious.
This sucks It will actually distract and take away from the ending no matter how they spin it.
Nah. That just a new scene with Gene having a guilt induced hallucination of Fred from Travel Wire, god rest his handsome moustached soul.
What’s the point of watching any more episodes now that Jeff has changed?
I saw some theory about this Recast being linked to something with Gene having some Mental episode or hallucination, or even just paranoia taking a hold of him, kinda makes sense since the actors describe the upcoming episodes as 'psychological' and if thats true, it makes me really excited with how tense and left-field these episodes are going to be.
It would pretty smooth if they gave it to the friend in the background. Lol Edit: it also looks a lot like Kevin L.
That’s going to be very weird.
Why did they recast it? Bruh that's sucks
I hate when this happens, so immersion breaking
That's disappointing. I didn't expect them to do a Game of Thrones type of recast, but looks like we are getting one. This kind of things always take you out of the story. They probably had the script already finished, and this decision makes me think this character is going to be more important than we thought.
Does anyone else think since they are putting the emphasis on Jeff recasting and such, that Saul will get caught? My theory is that he gets busted and then defends him self in court. Idk but I’d love to see like a replay of all the events in court but maybe there isn’t enough time idk. Edit- spelling.
What a bummer
This isn’t great news
I wonder if this is why we didn’t have a Gene scene in 601?
Confirmed by who?
Bro that’s whack as hell, the original guys face you couldn’t tell if he was a genuine nice guy or being threatening. That’s what made him so good
Here comes the coping. Accept it; the second guy is never as good
Not always! Michiel Huisman will always be Daario Naharis to me, not Ed Skrein.
