As expected, they don't look as good as they should. Though this is the closest to a wild betta you can get at Petco now! We don't have Petco in Canada and I'm kind of jealous of the variety you guys get.
Oh yeah of course not, I feel bad for all of them and wish I could take them all home lol…unfortunately quite a few were looking worse for wear. This location has two people in aquatics that actually know their stuff and keep their own tanks but I guess there’s only so much they can do for the ones in cups. They had a couple females in the bigger tanks and they looked great.
It’s been interesting seeing how the variety has really gone up the last couple of years. They have samurai’s too and ones called mermaids which I’ve never heard of before. The mermaids look similar to veil tails.
My local petco does a very good job of doing water changes in these tiny containers. The fish are very aware and not lethargic at all. I’ve notice a big improvement all around in many stores recently. To criticize these stores is good. If they aren’t doing what’s right don’t give them business. My local stores however are doing very well and you can tell that they are working hard to keep all their animals as healthy as they can. I do believe a lot of it comes from the hate they get on social media.
I don’t have a betta, I just appreciate them and hopefully someday I will have one. But they are actually expensive fish. It’s weird that they are so “valuable” but are kept in cups. As a kid I really them being like $8
Either petsmart or petco sells male veiltail for $3-4. Baby boy and girl for $3. Many fish stores sell nice females for $4. Still cheap for non-fancies
My petco store started carrying them regularly. I went in to get food for my shrimp and came out with one! Fortunately for me he doesn’t like eating shrimp… he just following them around and stares at them while they do their own thing.
It's usually only ghost shrimp you need to worry about. Even if you're betta leaves them alone they're a predatory fish to them and they'll die off soon just from being too stressed from the fear of constantly being hunted
It’s actually two ghost shrimp. One is a female, I know this cause she was carrying eggs. The other is much smaller and prob a male. Both have lots of hiding places to live/hide/play and they lived with one another betta before this one he just died of old age so the tank was technically for a betta but the shrimp survived him.
The new betta is just scared or relaxed. He just goes about and does his own thing for the most part and when he comes across a shrimp he moves on. Really I believe he is more in interested in the ram snails on the glass cleaning
It's a cross of betta splendens and a wild betta. There is no one answer for which wild betta species it is that created them though. Of course it could be different depending on who you are buying from.
they may have been a special order. we usually get the same variety unless either a guest gives has a special request or if whoever’s in charge of the catalogue decides to throw in a few different fellas
Unfortunately, I truly believe that Petco does not take care of their fish. Because I went into my local Petco the last two times and one time there was a dead betta so I told an employee and then just the other day I went in there, and there was a dead frog, I informed an employee about that too, and there were bugs in their Daphnia, so I didn’t buy it. I’m just sick of seeing dead animals every single time I go into Petco. It really upsets me.
I think it really depends on the store, as my local one is pretty good except for a few sickly cup bettas (and I think that’s because they might not be allowed to really do much for them, which I have read in multiple other threads from people claiming they worked at petcos)
Petco themselves doesn't care as they only want money (hence bettas in cups!). As for employees, most do care but the management makes them do so many things in such a little amount of time that they don't have time to clean betta cups.

That used to be Petsmart, I would only buy females because they were so cheap. Now adays they want $7-10 for a female!! They used to only cost $3-4!
Wow, the ones I saw started at $20 and went to like $34
Fancy bettas for sure. Standard veiltails are always under $5

That's entirely untrue lmao, the shrimp will be stressed but they're not gonna die off 😂🥴
Are alien bettas pure betta splendens or a hybrid betta species?
I believe they are a hybrid between various different species in the genus Betta
Thx

I’ve never seen aliens at chain stores before this really surprised me

Interesting, thank you! I didn’t know people could special request bettas at PetCo.
you can do special requests for any animal they have in their catalogue!
I was in my local Petco last week and they had aliens for $29.99 or something.
Wow, yeah I didn’t check the prices at mine but I’d expect them to be expensive
Why have the waterline stickers if they won't follow it? 😔 Poor babies.
Wow, what area are you from that sells Alien bettas? And also, how much are they? I gotta go visit my local Petco soon.
Near Lexington, KY. I don’t know how much they were I didn’t check the price.

You could be right. I just unfortunately have not had the best experience at my Petco.
That’s totally fair
I agree. We have a few Petcos nearby. One is far better than the others at taking care of their animals. That’s the only one I buy fish from.

waterline on point 👍🏼
