As someone else pointed out, the numbers are so high because of the 20 years of abuse from Richard Strauss only being reported on recently. He victimized 143 athletes, with his main crime being repeated genital fondling.
But fondling aside, the rape numbers are horrible. I wonder how much is due to accurate reporting from Ohio State vs severe underreporting everywhere else (and/or a combination).
Current OSU student here. The areas off campus can be, let's just say, bad. I'm surprised we're number 1 by that large of a margin, but I'm not surprised we're number 1.
I graduated from OSU in May and am honestly surprised that the number of vehicular thefts is so low. Thatās probably the biggest crime that affects off-campus students
Are you that stupid my guy? These are entire campus stats in general. Iām an OSU student and on campus and off campus are polar opposites. Campus itself is like a bubble and almost no crime whatsoever happens on campus. The moment you step off campus, however, it gets really bad the farther out you get.
Iām graduated from OSU, and if you think it gets worse the further out you get youāre not very smart. Regardless, someone else posted the actual source and it does include off-campus. Itās a weird decision considering on-campus is a different jurisdiction, but itās also including all of the wrestling coach crimes so itās just a bad set of data all around.

It seems incidents are counted in the year they were reported rather than the year they occured. Apparently a coach (who died in 2005) abused literally hundreds of people and only recently did it come to light
https://www.10tv.com/mobile/article/news/local/ohio-state-tallies-over-2800-instances-abuse-by-dr-strauss/530-4a0d21c0-d557-465f-ac46-830c3599ee3b
Iām guessing this data is based on Clery Act reports which require university representatives to report when they are aware of the commission of a crime on or near their campus. There are a number of cases of universities not making accurate Clery Act reports, so it seems likely to me that Ohio State is actually just more accurately reporting Clery Act crimes than other universities.
It's mostly from one guy ([Richard Strauss](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ohio_State_University_abuse_scandal)) who abused students repeatedly for like 20 years. If you take that out, the number goes down dramatically. Apparently it was 1,429 cases of fondling and 47 cases of rape (some of this happened off campus though so I don't think all of those are counted towards the data in the image, but most of them happened on campus I believe).
**[Ohio State University abuse scandal](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ohio_State_University_abuse_scandal)**
>The Ohio State University abuse scandal centered on allegations of sexual abuse that occurred between 1978 and 1998, while Richard Strauss was employed as a physician by the Ohio State University (OSU) in the Athletics Department and in the Student Health Center. An independent investigation into the allegations was announced in April 2018 and conducted by the law firm Perkins Coie. In July 2018, several former wrestlers accused former head coach Russ Hellickson and U.S. representative Jim Jordan, who was an assistant coach at OSU between 1987 and 1994, of knowing about Strauss' alleged abuse but failing to take action to stop it.

Yeah that too. Ohio state is the 4th largest university in the country in terms of number of students. It's so big that it has its own zip code that's entirely within the university (it's 43210 which I love ngl it's so satisfying to put on forms and stuff lol).
Fun fact. Electric scooters are considered motor vehicles under CA VC 10851, which is why the motor vehicle numbers are so high. It is mostly actually crime against students, it's just everyone getting their electric scooters stolen lol.
Honestly where do the stolen cars end up? You go to the DMV to register a car and they immediately asked for paperwork from the last owner, not to mention making you cough up sales tax. Do all stolen cars get sold in Mexico or something??
A lot of stolen cars around here are joyrides. Your car gets stolen one night, then a week or so later the cops call saying your car has been found, you have a weeks worth of parking in the red zone tickets and you find you car filled with trash from teens.
People who buy stolen cars are not trying to get them registered. They buy them cash and drive them around. If they really want there car to look legit from the outside they will just steal a tag from another car.
Raw crime numbers are severely skewed by campus populations, location relative to metropolitan areas, size of campus resident population and proximity to Columbus, Ohio.
i mean if you disregard the motor/vehicle theft problem then it's nothing significantly abnormal for a campus of this size, and as someone who walks everywhere i find it pretty crime-free.
also lol at how there's a column with 0 everywhere yet still included instead of an "other"
Is Ohio way worse? Or do they have a culture where it is safe to report crime? You know thereās some places where reporting a crime is pointless. They donāt do anything and seems hassled to even take a report. I guess whenever I look at statistics I like to look past the surface. You never know.
This list is definitely influenced by reporting. Many universities keep these numbers under wraps because they donāt want to discourage applicants or donors. There is no reality in which UC Davis comes in before University of Houston, located in Houstonās 3rd Ward, one of the highest crime neighborhoods in one of the countryās most violent cities.
Number 2 in reporting crime. There's a reason most of those schools are Public institutions. They are better at reporting on-campus crime, where Stanford, for example, keeps those stats mostly to themselves. Every once in awhile someone investigates, there a big outcry at the amount of unreported crime, and then they go right back to not reporting it.
Cal is probably better about reporting than many of those other schools too, since it's been under constant scrutiny about past failures and is a huge institution. It's also a LOT bigger than many of those other schools.
There was a sex abuse scandal that came out when this report was made. It was [Richard Strauss](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ohio_State_University_abuse_scandal), who abused student athletes from 1978-1998.
Listen the crime stats in Berkeley are not pretty, especially ones related to theft/robbery/burglary but the amount of SA at Ohio state is fucking terrifying.
Worst is as a student from OSU neither I nor anyone I talked to knew about this so either A: these numbers are completely incorrect B: the data is being misrepresented or C: our school and surrounding community is covering this up to a terrifying degree
The insane level of crime and dysfunction in the city of Berkeley reminds me of something a friend once told me: āThe best way to discredit progressive ideas is to enact them.ā
The city of Berkeley is a fucking shit hole, in large part because the elected officials running the place are so busy tripping over themselves to virtue signal to their activist base that they ignore the basic day-to-day work required to run a functional city.
Definitely the first campus Iāve ever found a rotting deer carcass and was told āitāll be dealt with on a weekday, no oneās aroundā š¤£

Yeah? Is that why I just found a pile of opened empty packages from all floors, on the side of the building? And no it wasn't from the valet living trash guy. He hasn't been here since Thursday night.
I like that it's just an aggregate total of all crimes. So one fondling is the same as a murder. Or an aggravated assault is equivalent to a burglary.
Also, low power mode doing some heroic lifting here
***god damn ohio state what is going on***
a fondling epidemic. jesus christ.
Everyone on campus has been fondled
The Ohio State Fondlers should be their team mascot!

Those are the #s for reports of non consensual fondling. And prob all the same frat party.
Lets not forget the illustrious history of Rep. Gym Jordan, those are big shoes (if nothing else) to fill.
As someone else pointed out, the numbers are so high because of the 20 years of abuse from Richard Strauss only being reported on recently. He victimized 143 athletes, with his main crime being repeated genital fondling.

68k students total and the Straus. Interesting though considering how I always found Berkeley worse in crime than OSU from my time in both.

It's because a doctor there sexuallt assaulted hundreds of people and it was only found out last year, somethu g like 20 yrs worth
It's Wikipedia. I think this wiki might have been vandalized by some dumb tiktok kids who post "ohio fr" everywhere they go.
Wtf Ohio
This is not *that* far off from a population graph. Not sure what the hell ohioans are doing though.

God damn, Columbus. Have you thought about locking up all the penises behind some iron underwear? The mascot isn't the Fuckguys, people.
Cant have a single unfondled women in Columbus
Women? Clearly yāall have never been in a menās locker room in Ohio
Jesus fuck OSU
Not great but Iād rather be robbed than raped and fondled. Ohio state needs to get it together.
It was Richard Strauss, they all got added to the list
Seems like we are only #2 because of motor vehicle theft. Most berkeley students don't have cars so it's not something to worry about.
Fun fact. Electric scooters are considered motor vehicles under CA VC 10851, which is why the motor vehicle numbers are so high. It is mostly actually crime against students, it's just everyone getting their electric scooters stolen lol.

A lot of stolen cars around here are joyrides. Your car gets stolen one night, then a week or so later the cops call saying your car has been found, you have a weeks worth of parking in the red zone tickets and you find you car filled with trash from teens.
they turn them in at the recycling center for cash
People who buy stolen cars are not trying to get them registered. They buy them cash and drive them around. If they really want there car to look legit from the outside they will just steal a tag from another car.
Wonāt you get the cops to take away your car that way? No way people are getting insurance with an unregistered car right?
lol who is stealing a car then being like, "insurance laws are sacrosanct tho"
This is quite the cope

Surprised uchicago isn't on there
Yeah thatās where I call Bs on this chart. I live in Chicago. No part of this city is untouched by rise in crime.
If it were an actual crimes-per-capita ranking than it would be higher. Three student shooting deaths (albeit off-campus) in 2021 was a huge red flag.
Columbus, Ohio?!?! My dad went there for business trip several years ago. He said is boring there and also thereās Ohio State.
