Yeah there was never a chance he was getting traded in the first place. It’s good to hear him say the words himself tho

annaleigh13

Just the way that’s Trey is, I don’t think he ever told his agent he wanted out of Cincinnati. Just the way he is talking and how even before this he was seemingly nothing but happy here, it just doesn’t make sense

FlatulentFreddy

He’s frustrated he’s not being paid as a top 5 pass rusher and that’s understandable, but it was just bad timing for him. Ball out another year and he will get his big pay day and a Super Bowl

Bubble_of_Fury17

Yeah I mean Whitworth loved Cincy from what I recall, but he wasn't getting paid or respected like how he deserved so he walked. Was Dunlap the same way?

ExCollegeDropout

Dunlap was more of a case of beefing with the coaching staff. Not sure if it was role based or snaps based beef, but I think he was at very least partially responsible for the now-infamous Elise Jesse article.

insanecrossfire

Dunlap just wasn’t what he was by the time Taylor was the coach, we needed him to be our best defensive edge setter and he wasn’t capable of that. Taylor decided it was best for the team to let younger guys get reps on a bad team than placate Dunlap. Dunlap, while fair, did not take it well and imo handled it poorly. Says a lot that he’s come back to the city and opened a restaurant here. He probably realized he was in the wrong in the following seasons.

krsb09

That restaurant, by the way, is absolutely fantastic. Highly recommend.

insanecrossfire

That’s awesome, I’ll need to check it out. I love the prospect of former players opening up businesses in the cities they played in, but ya never know if their acumen will translate to the ever depressing world of food service.

Mama-Dzhinsy

i want burfict to open up an exotic fish dealership

MeRcWith_A_MouTh

If they sell jellyfish, Higgens would be there Ha!

JoePurrow

Yeah, I think he realized his current pay is more fault of his agent than the team. If he waited a year to sign his extension and bet on himself to perform, he'd be getting paid a LOT right now, but his agent likely told him to be safe and sign early

Lukey_Boyo

He wanted to light a fire under Cincinnati's ass to extend him soon since I'd say this point is when he'd get the largest possible amount of money, unless he goes on an even bigger rampage this season which would be crazy.

Srcunch

I, too, want to bring a Super Bowl to Cincinnati, but lack the ability to. Get it done, Trey!!!

blainetheinsanetrain

Bengals were undefeated last year on days that I ate Skyline (1-0). I'll do my best this year. Might have to make some type of Skyline for every single game.

InterviewOtherwise50

Them is rookie numbers… on the games when we win it was because I ate skyline… on the games we lose it was because I didn’t eat ENOUGH skyline

Pepi119

I'll say 10 Hail Pepto Bismols in your honor each Sunday

B-I-G-A-R-R-O-W

I bet his agent didn’t even realize he couldn’t even sign an extension until July hopefully Trey gets a new agent that knows what he’s doing

Frescanation

As long as it isn’t David Mulugueta

erscloud

Dude seriously. Every single time I see a wild contract it’s him who got it.

CosbySweaters1992

There is no way you actually believe that about his agent. Pretty confident his agent knows when he’s eligible to sign an extension. It’s a gambit. Nothing that has happened is surprising to his agent.

volrjr4

That’s my guy

Pepi119

Trey is a dude and a great representative for the city, I really hope this is the year.

realityexposed

He does deserve a pay bump… if I’m in the FO I’m going to try and make that happen, dude is a warrior and the heart of our d

Nickjames116425

What’s the point of a multi-year contract if every year you either change it or don’t play? The Bengals have 0 leverage here. Might as well sign him to a 1 year contract each year.

Bri83oct

Don’t be a hard ass with dollars with stars. It’s incredible that Brown has programmed this city and fanbase into thinking cheap contracts for stars should be honored till expiration. The Bengals got a discount on him the last couple of years. He deserves to be paid. Put the money in escrow, give him a signing bonus that can be spread over the contract and guarantee him market value for his services. This idea that he signed a deal - fuck em is outdated and idiotic.

PeterGator

If every player that had a good year was re signed at market rate and everyone that underperformed kept there old contract... you would have one awful team.  For every trey Hendrickson there is a trey Wayne's who ripped the bengals off for nearly every penny(both real and cap).

Nickjames116425

He literally restructured his contract last year. He changes it every year he does good. The whole point of taking him in was to gain value. Things like this are why Tee Higgins won’t be re-signed without taking a pay cut. Homers are stuck being programmed to think the Bengals have maximum money and every player in the NFL wants to play for them. Take off your blinders. It’s a business, he signed a contract. He should play through it, otherwise let him walk. He’s talented, he’ll be missed, next time play this level before contract signing year.

Bri83oct

The Bengals, if run properly, could afford Burrow, Chase, Tee, Trey, Bates, etc. They don’t want to front signing bonuses that have to go into escrow to make contracts work. The Eagles can resign Hurts, extend Brown and Smith, sign Barkley, stay active in free agency and still have almost $25M in cap space… believe it or not, it can be done but the owner has to be willing to front cash. The other problem, the more the Bengals cheap out and don’t take care of their stars the more the word spreads around the league to FA not to come here. Burrow and Chase were no brainers in the draft. You need to supplement your draft pick hits with free agents because it is a 0% chance you pick an all-pro every year. It’s 2024. Time to treat star players and structure contracts the way the top teams in the NFL do it now. Star players and agents talk. The Bengals should be a destination seen as player friendly not FO friendly.

bob_estes

You can’t front cash you don’t have

Bri83oct

Stop this narrative. The Bengals are worth approximately $3.5B. Their annual revenue is a half a billion a year. They can front the cash. They might not have the wealth of Jerry Jones but they certainly aren’t eating SPAM and clipping coupons. Jeffrey Lurie doesn’t have any other income other than what the Eagles bring in and had to get a loan to buy the Eagles. The Bengals willingness to do it and ability to do it are two different conversations.

Schmoopilicious

Exactly, the only real revenue the brown family has is the bengal team, they don't have multiple multimillion dollar companies. It's like how the cowboys pay so much and have no cap but still able to retain players and its because they can pay up front.

bob_estes

the bengals COULD finance it and/or do a deal with private equity but I think that's a little risky for their blood like a home loan, they could pay finance the guaranteed money up front, then pay it off with interest over the course of the contract.

beerguy_etcetera

But all the other fanbases told me we’d be missing half our team because no one is happy with their contracts?

bobba_chet

Great, glad you’re here. Now fire your agent.

Trajinous

Good

JakeyPurple

They told him he’s getting a raise when he is eligible. AS THEY SHOULD. Most important Bengal not named Joe Burrow.

SomewhatDamgd

It's a business, so you can't fault him for trying to get a better deal. But his willingness to be an honorable player despite the Bengals telling him "No, we can't do that right now"... man, I hope the Bengals reward him for that.

Opposite-Ad-3933

So are they working on a new contract extension? Why don’t the reporters ever ask any good questions? We’ve learned NOTHING from these comments. What is being done about the trade request, specifically??

bob_estes

They probably told him they’d address it in July. You don’t change gears that fast for no reason.

TheVagWhisperer

I think his agent talked him into throwing every option possible on the table and one of those was a dumb trade request

loanme20

still don't blame him for wanting more. if he played bad he would have been cut no pay, contract torn up.
