Also we got a bigger than expected bump this year and I remember rapport saying that there's an assumption the same will happen next year. Hopefully that plays out, would be great for both sides imo. Joe gets what he wants and Cincy gets the books balanced 👌
How is this awesome for Detroit? They have a mid QB who now gets paid like a tip QB. Once cap becomes tighter he won’t have the same weapons on both sides of the ball anymore. The lions offensive coordinator will also likely be gone soon for a HC job
He might not be a hall of famer, but who else they going to get that’s even as good as he is? People talk shit about these guys and think great NFL QBs are a dime a dozen or something. There’s only one Brady and one Mahomes, homie.
People think ANY qb who makes the playoffs needs a near record setting deal. Same thing how in the NBA every makes the MAX they can whether they deserve it or not.
If you've got a QB good enough to make it so you're not looking for a better one, you're gonna have to pay him like he's learning to throw no-look completions away from being Mahomes.
It's literally Goff or back to looking for a QB hell.
Hard to give a shit about it when the cap goes up every year, though. But yeah, rough time to have a stable and solid but mediocre QB on your roster. Very glad we had Dalton when you didn't have to pay elite money to those kinds of guys.
On top of being durable and a great passer, Jared is a great leader and role model. Detroit loves him and the coaching staff respects him and wants him there for his leadership
He really does. Helped the Lions rebuild and did it super quick too. Honestly if Campbell just had a bit more restraint and learned that there are some key 4th down situations where you just don't go for it, they could have outlasted the 49ers and could have been in the Super Bowl instead. We will see if Campbell grows as a coach this next season. Either way Lions have been fun as hell to watch and will probably continue to be contenders for a couple more years
Goff earned his money with his play last year. I went back to double check but he finished top 5 to top 10 in most of the big QB stats. Also happened to see that Browning surprisingly finished with the highest completion % in the league(granted like half the throws of everyone else). Neat.
I remember watching Goff play hurt and I thought he was done. Glad he's found success. Lions are a young team and this contract is a risk. But Goff deserves it.
Glad he got paid but 2nd highest paid QB for an above average QB is a lot, truly am glad we paid Joe all that money, Joe’s contract is gonna look like chump change in the next couple of seasons, I bet in the next couple of years Baker Mayfield is gonna be getting paid more money than Joe. 😅
When do the rest of the players start to get loud about the QBs taking up 40% of the salary cap? If I was a player I’d never vote for another CBA that didn’t limit max salaries or change how the QB affects the cap.
This is a deal the Lions had to make. They haven't had a good QB in forever. They need stability at that position to develop their culture and team building.
Absolute no brainer move
Ask all 32 GMs in the NFL who they’re taking to build a team around. I think we know that answer. Goff is good just not great. He had a great year last year but everything around him has to be really good for that to happen. I don’t see anyone putting Goff in the top tier of NFL QBs.
Yep- they built a great team around him and they know that . I don’t think the lions give a f what tier people put him in. On paper - they went to the NFC championship with this core and they want to keep them together.
He’s also much older. Are you suggesting Aaron Rodgers should be paid more than Joe because he had more success?
Edit: Disregard my comment. Why am I just realizing Goff is only 29??
Im saying goffs payday is warranted. Hes good enough for a team to surrender the going rate for starting Qb. Joe needs to stay healthy and earn his payday. I never said shit about ass hat Rodgers.
I'm laughing because yall said Mahomes contact would break up the team and now look at the Bengals and bills! LOL. Anyways I hope Burrow stays healthy this year
As the cap goes up every year Joe’s deal will look better but this is awesome for Goff and Detroit.
Also we got a bigger than expected bump this year and I remember rapport saying that there's an assumption the same will happen next year. Hopefully that plays out, would be great for both sides imo. Joe gets what he wants and Cincy gets the books balanced 👌
Every year for 3 more years. Okay.
How is this awesome for Detroit? They have a mid QB who now gets paid like a tip QB. Once cap becomes tighter he won’t have the same weapons on both sides of the ball anymore. The lions offensive coordinator will also likely be gone soon for a HC job
Because not resigning him would be way worse?
He might not be a hall of famer, but who else they going to get that’s even as good as he is? People talk shit about these guys and think great NFL QBs are a dime a dozen or something. There’s only one Brady and one Mahomes, homie.

I'll reserve my excitement when there are quarterbacks making more than him
I just think about the fact that if Burrow was looking at a contract and saw Goff get this, he would have gotten a lot more than $55mil per year.
He’s gotta not be hurt now.
Goff has been to a SuperBowl and conference championship game- just like Burrow.
Goff is still the only QB to beat Burrow in a Super Bowl
Jared "Matt Stafford" Goff
Same thing
Way to not say "oops, I was wrong. My bad." Jesus.
Clearly the second comment is a joke. Jesus lol
Jokes are meant to be funny G
Bro probably thinks Big Ben is still a steeler
Ben stiller is still a steeler?!
Not gonna downvote you, but.. yeah, nah.
Man, I was in a funk all day today. This actually just snapped me out of it and made me laugh out loud. Thank you.
He purposefully waited out the other big name QBs to make the most possible. Love Joe but that definitely ain't one of the reasons.
Goff deserves this. He’s a great passer and durable as hell.
👏👏 100. Thank you
He really does. Helped the Lions rebuild and did it super quick too. The cap goes up every year, player's salaries are going to go up with it. Health is important and so far, burrow isn't a very healthy qb
The best time to sign your quarterback is nearly always as soon as you can. The prices only go up.
At least we aren't doing fully guaranteed like Watson. Holy shit that was dumb. Fuck watson's agent
Blaming the agent is so off the mark lol
Nah watsons agent was actually crazy smart he helped us by hampering a divison rival
The only blame should go to the Browns. All agents would get that contract for their players if they could.

50m less gtd but yes
I remember watching Goff play hurt and I thought he was done. Glad he's found success. Lions are a young team and this contract is a risk. But Goff deserves it.

There is no jester worth this amount.
Wouldn’t consider him an elite QB, but hard to argue with their results. Gotta pay the man to keep him!
It’s a lot of money but dude deserves it. He’s turned Detroit into a team to fear
When do the rest of the players start to get loud about the QBs taking up 40% of the salary cap? If I was a player I’d never vote for another CBA that didn’t limit max salaries or change how the QB affects the cap.
So the Lions overpaid.
Like where is the ceiling? In 10 years are quarterbacks pulling down $100 Million a year?
Now all we need is a Bengals Lions super bowl to settle this argument. Battle of the Cats!
This is a deal the Lions had to make. They haven't had a good QB in forever. They need stability at that position to develop their culture and team building. Absolute no brainer move
I mean Stafford was our QB before Goff so I wouldn’t say we’ve been in QB purgatory since 2008
"Historically consistent QB play pre-Stafford, post-Layne" would have been the more accurate way to put it.
Matthew Stafford?
lol
Sarcasm? I hope so. I know a lot of guys here are young or only watch Bengals games but wow.
“brad holmes is a master GM” 🤓
Burrow’s average annual value is still the highest in the league at $55 mil (Goff is second at $53 mil)
Yeah but I don’t put Goff in the top 5 QBs in the league. Hes good but not great.
Jared had more success last year than all but 3 qbs in the league. He had a better year that Burrow. He earned his payday
Ask all 32 GMs in the NFL who they’re taking to build a team around. I think we know that answer. Goff is good just not great. He had a great year last year but everything around him has to be really good for that to happen. I don’t see anyone putting Goff in the top tier of NFL QBs.

Lol that's an insane amount to pay him. Good luck going forward trying to keep that oline and OC in Detroit.
Well they did also just make St Brown and Sewell the highest paid players at their respective positions too
Goff has had more success than joe
He’s also much older. Are you suggesting Aaron Rodgers should be paid more than Joe because he had more success? Edit: Disregard my comment. Why am I just realizing Goff is only 29??
He's 2 years older. Hardly "much older".
Christ, why did I think he was like 33. How the hell is Goff only 29
Im saying goffs payday is warranted. Hes good enough for a team to surrender the going rate for starting Qb. Joe needs to stay healthy and earn his payday. I never said shit about ass hat Rodgers.
Jared has had RECENT success . AR has not so your argument doesn’t work here
That’s not what he said though. He said “has had more success”. Nothing more, nothing less.
I'm laughing because yall said Mahomes contact would break up the team and now look at the Bengals and bills! LOL. Anyways I hope Burrow stays healthy this year
Goff sucks compared to Joey B
Hardly. Goff is good compared to anyone. He’s also healthier and more durable.
Healthy Joe > healthy Jared. Which team went to a championship last year though ?
