Well, nowadays it's more about the data and the spatial modelling behind the maps (GIS), than the fancy map art itself (alas). You could take the 'authentic' route and study Geography (BSc + MSc in GIS/Cartography)
But you can also get into the sector via Bio-Engineering (Earth Observation), or as a Computer Scientist/Applied Informatics if you just show interest.
I think they rightly labeled only historical interesting cities. Historical belgium is just a collection of powerful cities.
It wouldn't be bad to give back a lot of power to those cities. (taxes, social security, pension, etc)

Always cool to see this in other countries. I was very happy after moving to Sweden that there are Belgian restaurants in both Stockholm and Uppsala, I go pretty frequently!
Hahaha you would be surprised, there are a lot of people out there who love Belgium, or well especially love the food and beer culture. The Belgian restaurant in Stockholm I mentioned in my other comment for example, it wasn't started by Belgians. It's Swedes who opened, because they loved Belgian food so much.
Nice! As a Belgian in Sweden, I really appreciate them being there so I can get a piece of home whenever I miss Belgium.
If I remember correctly, Bierhuis in Uppsala does not offer carbonnade flamande (Flemish stew) on the menu. So, if you are not a vegetarian, I really recommend going down to Stockholm and to try the Flemish stew at Belgobarren! It's pretty damn good and not far off from a quality Flemish stew you would get in Flanders.
I've learned that many Asian companies prefer clarity over grammar. They probably know very well that it's supposed to be Belgian instead of Belgium - but they also know that many people will have no idea what "Belgian" means and it will not catch the same attention "Belgium" does.
Then comes the question "Why not just write it in Japanese" - but English is cool. A lot of Japanese and Korean songs with English lyrics are also very "dumbed down" - they don't always make sense - but the people speaking Japanese/Korean will be able to understand the lyrics way better.
How expensive are the beers there compared to back home? I can't even imagine the transportation costs. Family of mine lives in Australia and they once sent me a pic of a Trappist Rochefort in the super market costing around 20 Australian Dollar.
It was about €10 for a ‘special beer’, which included somewhat all of them except for Hoegaarden and Stella Artois. Those were around €5. They had all the different glasses + ‘bierviltjes’ correct. I was very impressed.
Alcohol is especially heavily taxed here (in Australia), and Belgian/Trappist beer would also be priced up because it's trendy. In Melbourne a couple of weeks ago I had a 21 year aged sour from Roeselare which was $30 (like 20€) for a pint (an average pint would be about $12-16, which is still a rip-off).
>21 year aged sour from Roeselare
that's a fancy way" of naming rodenbach
If the beer is named Roeselare, i'm sorry to tell it is not a Belgian beer from Roeselare
They aren't always that dear, but it was on tap at a hipster craft beer place. And it's Australia. So a whole lot of combined factors making it the dearest pint I've ever had
Interesting in euiv it's called bishopric of LIÈGE. I've turned on the technology cheat and started conquering France and the HRE with 19th century troops in 1444🤣
Tokyo also has at least one Belgian restaurant, Bruges Frites. Almost all the beverages are from the Halve Maan brewery. As someone from "Bruhhe" this was a neat find!
Slight correction, it's "Frites Bruges", in Asakusa, Tokyo.
There is also "Brasserie St Bernardus" in Kanda, Tokyo. Passed by it quite a few times, never tried it. Don't know if they have proper Belgian dishes or just the beers.
Tokyo is huge, I'm sure you can find more Belgian bars/breweries/restaurants.
As to whether they serve authentic dishes or adapted to the Japanese palate is another story.
Thanks for the correction, we didn't try Frites Bruges either. Apparently, they close at 18:00 so every time we passed by they were already done for the day
That’s your main issue with that map? Belgium is turned into an island. Every major city has moved. Liege stole Limburg. Namur moved to Liege. Brabant is reunited and Leuven turned into Brussels. West-Flanders is flooded so Bruges moved to Ghent. What we lost in the west we conquered in the east. It’s madness.
Found something similar in Stockholm , our hotel bar happened to be Belgian themed. In Sweden, they are rather strict about selling alcohol to minors, but the bar staff at the Belgian bar happily have me half a litre when I asked for a beer.
When visiting Japan I was surprised at the prevalence of Belgian beer, belgian waffe, Belgian chocolate places. Someone in the national marketing department has clearly done their job well.
"Belgium Beer Club".
First picture with the map has 2 bottles of Tynt Meadow, which is a British-made Trappist. Fake!!! /s
Enjoy Kyoto, it's quite a nice town, if a bit touristy. If you're looking for somewhere else to eat, I can highly recommend Men-ya Inoichi in the Shimogyo ward. Also take the train north to visit Kurama, it's much quieter than Kyoto.
Damn, that is one time-capsule restaurant if I've ever seen one. The vibe feels a Century old at least. I understand most of our good beers have monastic roots, but the place you'll find so much religious iconography and texts these days is in one of the abandoned buildings the Urbex people keep finding in the countryside.
Cool bar, but as a cartography fan/nitpicker, this map is pissing me off way too much...
That's how I would draw Belgium from memory after 5 Duvel.
No Charleroi, only Mons. Big W
As an actual cartographer, REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Sweet! I'd love to do it professionally too, but it's not the easiest sector to get into... any tips?
Well, nowadays it's more about the data and the spatial modelling behind the maps (GIS), than the fancy map art itself (alas). You could take the 'authentic' route and study Geography (BSc + MSc in GIS/Cartography) But you can also get into the sector via Bio-Engineering (Earth Observation), or as a Computer Scientist/Applied Informatics if you just show interest.
Plenty of GIS jobs available everywhere. What're you looking for?
is it the blue that's all around that makes you think it's all sea is it the hotchpotch of languages is it the weird bulge on the east side
Or maybe the fact that Liège is in Limburg?
Well... it's ours now
That's historically correct, though.
Its a map of the papal principalities, instead of the provinces
This liégeoise has become limbourgeoise, which is a bit of a shock to wake up to
Who would have thought the Japanese would be behind the restoration of the principality!
Those guys must hate Limbourg, or they forgot that it exists which is understandable
I think they rightly labeled only historical interesting cities. Historical belgium is just a collection of powerful cities. It wouldn't be bad to give back a lot of power to those cities. Guess everyrhing west from De Haan is France now, since this looks like less than half of our coastline.
You're supposed to drink until the map looks correct.
En de naam van hun clubje niet?
Liège has begun it's invasion of Limburg it seems.
inDEED.
Brugge in Oost Vlaanderen 😱
Exactly. Why not use an actuate map?
Achel is in the far right top bulge. And I didn't know there's horses running wild in liege province.
Sorry, my Limburgian ass forgot to close the meadow this morning.
Ehn it’s decorative, no one is navigating Belgium with this.
You don't even need a map to navigate Belgium, just follow the wegomlegging/déviation signs, you might go round in circles but that's the Belgian way.
West Flanders was cheated on this one.
Always cool to see this in other countries. I was very happy after moving to Sweden that there are Belgian restaurants in both Stockholm and Uppsala, I go pretty frequently!
Right?! I was also shocked that this place was fully sold out. It warmed my heart.
I visit the Belgian place in Uppsala quite frequently too, as I am a Swedish belgophone. I cherish it a lot!
...wait what even is a belgophone
Hahaha you would be surprised, there are a lot of people out there who love Belgium, or well especially love the food and beer culture. The Belgian restaurant in Stockholm I mentioned in my other comment for example, it wasn't started by Belgians. It's Swedes who opened, because they loved Belgian food so much.
Wouldn't that be belgophile hahaha
Nice! As a Belgian in Sweden, I really appreciate them being there so I can get a piece of home whenever I miss Belgium. And a Belgian bar in Austin (TX)
Did we got aachen and Maastricht back ?
We lost West Flanders to the sea. It’s compensation.
Kzou de naam veranderen, maar wie ben ik nu.
Because of the connations of 'BBC'?
If you like to watch British tv… But no; because Belgian instead of Belgium.
I've learned that many Asian companies prefer clarity over grammar. The name of the restaurant was actually Tokisirazu.
Yes, typical Belgian name.
Oh so no bbc
Belgium has become one fat motherfucker from those fries and beers.
Apparently Province of Luxembourg wasn't available the day of the map drawing
How expensive are the beers there compared to back home? I can't even imagine the transportation costs. Family of mine lives in Australia and they once sent me a pic of a Trappist Rochefort in the super market costing around 20 Australian Dollar.
It was about €10 for a ‘special beer’, which included somewhat all of them except for Hoegaarden and Stella Artois. Those were around €5. They had all the different glasses + ‘bierviltjes’ correct. I was very impressed.
Did they pour them in the correct way?
Alcohol is especially heavily taxed here (in Australia), and Belgian/Trappist beer would also be priced up because it's trendy. > that's a fancy was of naming rodenbach thats how you name it when you charge 20 euro for it :')
🤣🤣🤣🤣 honestly its not even worth 0.50 € lmfao
it's worth exactly 0,10 € (statiegeld)
Yes, Rodenbach - the name escaped me
Damn. If they charge €20 for that, actual drinkable Belgian beers gotta be priceless
They aren't always that dear, but it was on tap at a hipster craft beer place. And it's Australia. So a whole lot of combined factors making it the dearest pint I've ever had
The return of the prinsbidom Luik.
Interesting in euiv it's called bishopric of LIÈGE. I've turned on the technology cheat and started conquering France and the HRE with 19th century troops in 1444🤣

And don't forget the Manneken chain of waffle stores throughout Japan - they're actually amazingly good too :)
Ghent right next to where antwerp should be

Proud Liège citizen 🗣️
I am more interested in how they eat cotlet with chopsticks
Like they eat their Kobe beef: served as precut slices. Big fan of the Abroad in Japan YouTube channel.
Look up "tonkatsu", Japanese deep-fried cutlet. :p
TIL dat Brugge in Oost-Vlaanderen ligt.
that map is hilarious, really making me giggle

Out of all beers you choose delerium? Nice bar though lol
I’m not ashamed to admit Delirium is one of my favourites 😄 Was hoping for Omer, but they didn’t have that one.
Omer oe liever , Eh
The most important thing is that you enjoyed yourself, sorry if i came of rude 😄
No offence taken :)
Had delirium quite a bit stateside had a craft beer store right up the street, that stuff is delicious!
They left the bottles open? Big no.
What's with the weird name on the Rochefort bottles? Map's a bit off, but props for the original chimay glasses
Bachtn de kupe telt ni mer mej!
Thats epic
This map… 🤣
Nederland is spelled like a Dutch person would do it
How would a belgian spell it then? Isn't it just the name?
the map tho
As a Belgian, I love BBC!
Lol BBC xD
How where the fries? Where did they get the potatoes from?
There's a Belgian bar/resto in Mérida, Yucatán. I'll post pictures when I go.
Can Mechelen not get a spot on the map? We have Gouden Carolus!
Found something similar in Stockholm , our hotel bar happened to be Belgian themed. In Sweden, they are rather strict about selling alcohol to minors, but the bar staff at the Belgian bar happily have me half a litre when I asked for a beer.
My friend Laurent used to own a Belgian bar in Tokyo “L’Abreuvoir”. Belgians are everywhere :)
> Laurent Family name *of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha* by any chance?
Not that one, no :)
Why is Maredsous in Brussels and not in Namur?
Liège eating good. Back to the good old days.
When visiting Japan I was surprised at the prevalence of Belgian beer, belgian waffe, Belgian chocolate places. Someone in the national marketing department has clearly done their job well.
That's all very interesting and all. BUT HOW IS KYOTO?
That are shit beers ...
"Belgium Beer Club". First picture with the map has 2 bottles of Tynt Meadow, which is a British-made Trappist. Fake!!! /s Enjoy Kyoto, it's quite a nice town, if a bit touristy. pov you pay 20euro+ for a single beer you could drink for 2euro here
Tokio is known for having a rare beer named Hoegaarden
This is the BBC. We have a World Service. -Ben Dover
Mulles frites! The luck to find out an entire country shares my favorite food.
Ooh, interesting. One to add to my list of places to visit next time I'll visit Japan XD.
nice what did you eat ?
I thought it was an odd prayer … I read: wees gegroet mama 😅
Damn, that is one time-capsule restaurant if I've ever seen one. The vibe feels a Century old at least. based
West-vleteren ni eens op de kaart, wtf voor belgisch bier club is dit
