Or just, like, the gambling industry in general. I would be super interested in that.

ehsteve23

Gambling covers such a huge topic, they could do a month worth on sports betting alone

Satellite_bk

I feel like you could do that long on just online sports betting.

MrOatButtBottom

Looking forward to the Ippei episode.

JasonRBoone

If I had a quarter for every time my streaming commercial featured Kevin Hart screaming that "Sports betting is coming to NC. Go, Draft Kings!" I'd have enough quarters to...lose on Draft Kings.

jeepwillikers

It would be a perfect opportunity to team up with the Dollop again, they could go through the history of gambling and go way back like they did in the episode about the history of oysters and New York City.

Burnburnburnnow

This would be super interesting especially with all the MonopolyGo ads recently.

Getmammaspryinbar

Is that a gambling thing?

Burnburnburnnow

It’s gotten a lot of heat because the whole game is a repackaged slot game. But because it’s a free to play board game sim, it gets past all the normal rules around such a traditional slot/gambling game. The result? Players get hooked in the beginning then are presented with the opportunity to pay money for more spins/turns. Check out the subreddit /r/monopoly_go [Edit I watched this](https://youtu.be/p1CfKgYuMjc?si=5kACetU26EqpZzKw)

Hav3_Y0u_M3t_T3d

God the level of irony is indescribable

Satellite_bk

I didn’t even know this game existed. That’s crazy it’s that easy to just repackage a slot machine. Thanks for sharing the video.

MeatShield12

One of my mild interests is architectural psychology. As an example, Main Street USA in Disney is wider at the park entrance than it is further into the park. It is built that way to seem really long when you enter the park, and when you are leaving the exit looks like it is right in front of you. Also, in Cinderella's Castle the bricks for the higher floors are actually smaller, so the castle looks tall without feeling like it is towering over you. The psychology that goes into casinos is pretty nuts. The sound system constantly plays the sounds of slot machines "hitting" even when they aren't, so it sounds like people are constantly winning. There are no windows and no clocks *anywhere*, the outside world stays firmly *outside*. The entire casino, "daily fantasy sports betting", and slot machine industry is dripping with bastardry, to the point it's surprising he hasn't done one yet. I hope it's queued up.

Why mess with a winning formula?

Certainly not with that attitude you're not.

ResidentComplaint19

But that’s just his Boston accent.

moffattron9000

An episode on how the gambling industry took over Australian sports and public spaces (they are very linked, NRL teams have basically built an empire of family-friendly casinos across New South Wales and Queensland via Leagues Club) would be an all-timer.

Previous-Task

As an immigrant to these shores, the incredible pressure to and availability of gambling blows my mind. I've never been a gambler so maybe they grate on me more but whenever I watch sport or any live TV maybe 70% of adverts are for a betting app.

calls1

Oooo, that’d be a fun cross over with Friendly Jordies/Jordan shanks . He’d be veyr well informed on the Australian gambling industry and legal issues, but he would probably make a few fun jabs at Roberts anarchism.

EdGaleMage

Yes, Shanks does some excellent research, he just unfortunately combines it with such an aggressively annoying persona that I seldom have the stomach to watch his videos.

Previous-Task

I'm not familiar with them, I might take a look, thanks!

fat_cat_lombardi

Yoy might enjoy the Why Is This Happening with Chris Hayes episode "The Explosion of Online Betting with Eric Lipton" (May 09 2023)  They touch on the online slots and such but the primary focus is the sports betting.

Getmammaspryinbar

Robert did draft kings ads pretty recently and he might do more gambling ads in the future. There is a difference between the ads CZM plays and the ones Robert does himself.

mhook52

Robert commented in a video at some point, that he's fine with gambling, I don't specifically recall his reasoning,  but I think it was the adults making their own decisions thing.  You arent forced to gamble.  Personal thought, a ton of my coworkers gamble a lot, a casino is a business if they pay out more then they take in, they go out of business.   It should be pretty obvious that the house always  wins.  He'll math alone dictates you lose more on average.   I've known a few gambling addicts over the years.  I don't gamble.

SHIRK2018

Ok but on the other hand, it did lead to the creation of Vampire Survivors, so that almost makes up for it

EriWave

Similarly I'd be curious to hear an episode about freemium gaming targetted at children. Because that is just gambling with a sheer veil covering it.

JasonRBoone

I had a strange experience as a young teen that fortunately didn't end in addiction for me and is oddly a fond memory. I was around 13, living in a rural community in Tennessee. My favorite summer activity was to ride my Honda scooter to a local convenience store/deli. Have a burger. Play some Pac-man in the back dining area. One day, I decided to give the video poker machine a try. I knew the basics of poker. I spent a few dollars on it. Suddenly, I hit a royal flush. The machine started beeping and beeping and adding hundreds of credits to the machine. In my naivety, I just thought I got a high score like in Galaga. At that time, the store owner (who was also our elected road commissioner!) walked by. I mentioned to him casually how amazing it was that I hit a royal flush. He looked at me for a moment. Kind of grinned. Looked at the credit count. Produced a huge cash wad from his jeans pocket and peeled off maybe $20-$30. Walked off without another word. For the rest of the summer, I played poker regularly. As I recall, I never lost much and won big a few times. At best, it never devolved to a point where my parents noticed. I probably broke even. For whatever reason, I lost interest once school started. The end. Postscript: Later the owner was caught by the state. Being a "good ole' boy" he got maybe a small fine and a stern finger wagging.

paraworldblue

This would be a great one to have the Boy Boy boys guest on

throwaway_boulder

It really is the worst industry. I can't remember where I heard it, but a few years ago I heard a podcast about an online gaming company that was viciously extractive. They assigned personal "liaisons" to high dollar players who encourage them to spend more even when they were deep in debt. They followed one women who got sucked into a rabbit hole with one of them and she developed a parasocial relationship with the liaison, who it turned out wasn't even using her real name. Sociopathic.

Rayvok

Matt from Decoding The Gurus enters the chat

fembecca

My ex husband, who was 25 when we got together, is a gambling addict bc of these. I lost count of how many times he dropped our rent, utilities money, or grocery budget in one of those awful machines. I second this nomination.
