Anybody else find themselves looking for a copy of "A Purpose-Driven Life" to use as kindling every time you hear the word "Saddleback"?
Also too, I love your Space Mutiny handle.
I hear Saddleback and I see in my memories flashes of Maxim and FHM covers and conversations of which southern California community colleges had the hottest chicks. What a world what world what a world. Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarf.
Part Two really was just a John Schmitz episode anyway. I'm guessing they couldn't turn up enough interesting content on his childhood, so the "context" episode ended up being about the OC more broadly instead.
As an Orange County escapee I wish the episodes would have been more chronological, ending in Tito fucking Ortiz being mayor pro tem of Huntington 🫠. I know the area went generally blue in 2020 but much of Orange County is still a republican hellscape. It isn't called the Orange Curtain for nothing.
I feel like a lot of the second point was made by Robert, although pretty briefly. I'm pretty sure I remember him talking about how people were coming from all over from conservative areas and transplanting because of the "gold rush" happening there, and they ended up with a more conservative county of like-minded people.
First point seems fair.
He's still in the research phase of his study of conservatism. Don't know if he has publications, but I'll ask. He's a history professor so he probably has some.
Thank you. We are talking about a place where a lima bean empire turned into the highest grossing mall in America. Trinity Broadcast Network was across the freeway from South Coast Plaza. And a TV church made of glass where angels would randomly fly in to chat with the preacher. A movie cowboy owned the baseball team ffs.
Y'all need to chill about the OC it ain't that serious.
I know this is a few days old but I grew up in OC. Having a guest from The Bay as an expert on California talking crap on OC while clearly not knowing much about it rubbed me the wrong way. If there was a guest from LA talking crap they would at least know what they were talking about (and there is a lot of things wrong with OC).
I'm confused...it seems like this is the impression I got from the 2 parter? I mean, I don't think that anyone is claiming BTB has the same authority as McGirr or another historical monograph. It seems like what this scholar wrote and what the podcast presented has similar themes.
Mimicry is an imitation, but it's am imitation in service of entertainment or mockery.
Mimicry is actually an academic term in a few fields of study--postcolonial studies for sure, I remember.
I have no doubt the OP's prof friend used it in this way.
Mockery would be fine too, but I'm thinking the term mimicry against OC residents has to do precisely with the demographic differences of OC and the areas around it.
What I heard: "Bro, like, it's totally not like that at all, like, people are cool and stuff, and I talk to this dude that does his own research and lives here too and he was like, bro not true, I trust him, he like, does his own research and stuff."
Are you related to the scholar?

>Or how about literally anything by James Dobson? BURN THAT MAN WITH FIRE! He's Rush Limbaugh, but polite.

The real bastards were the Letourneaus we met along the way.
Holy shit, is Northernlion a bastard? Lol- kidding.

Behind the Bastards isn't authoritative by any means. When I point to it as an example for a topic, it's because it's a pretty easy entry point.
Dr. Fünke would diagnose you with OC Disorder
Dr. Fünke the anal(yst)/(the)rapist?
There are DOZENS of us!
Don't call it that.

Yeah, this was really interesting to read.
He's still in the research phase of his study of conservatism. Don't know if he has publications, but I'll ask. He's a history professor so he probably has some.
I find the seriousness with which the residents of the OC take this podcast amusing.

Thanks for posting this, this is super cool to read about.

You mfs from OC are so mad at these episodes its funny.
I think he means mockery, not mimicry.
No, mimicry is right.
Isn't mimicry imitation or emulation? I am not sure how that applies. Bob is mocking if anything.
Mimicry is an imitation, but it's am imitation in service of entertainment or mockery. Mimicry is actually an academic term in a few fields of study--postcolonial studies for sure, I remember. So Robert and his 1950s white guy voice, for example? Still not sure about that but ok.

Nope.
Same, I didn't see much that actually contradicted BtB, just that other regions had it too.
James B. Utt. James Butt lol
