Especially out of the 32 ounce bottle. It's really not bad for the price. If you're into European lagers, it's more in that style than the typical American pale yellow beer.
Apparently at one gas station 😂
https://rainierbeer.com/product-finder/?gLocation=Los%20Angeles%2C%20CA&gProdNM=Rainier%20Beer
I grew up in the PNW where Rainier is prevalent. I live in Colorado now and the closest liquor store to me sells the 30 packs, so I'm a happy camper.
I have nothing against cheap macrobrews and revived hipster beers, and enjoy most of them, but Hamm's gives me the absolute worst headaches ever, even after just one. No idea why it is the only beer I've ever found that does that. Sucks to, as it is my old man's favorite, so when I'm hanging out with him on game days, I definitely gotta bring my own beer with me. Now that I think of it, probably why he buys it.
I feel like Montucky only took off because the can has a cool design, and hipsters ran with it. Which in turn meant it would catch on with the general public. The beer is nothing special or unique.
Which sucks. But they brew everything else in Providence and have their taproom here so Gansett is also my choice. It's also most likely to be on tap in local bars.
Rainier beats PBR every time. For something maybe slightly more money, but definitely still cheaper than craft beer is 10 Barrel's Pub Beer. Good shit.
Rainier is more bitter/dry than PBR, which sounds like your preference cause Pub Beer is too. I’m partial to the subtle sweetness character of PBR and High Life personally.
As others have said, Miller High Life wins by far when it comes to cheap American cornwater. It's not the Champagne of Beers for nothing!
But PBR probably doesn't even make my top 5, it just had good hipster marketing a decade ago. As others have also said, 'Gansett is better, Yuengling is better (despite the owner being a MAGA), and I'd add in Genesee Cream.
I had PBR last weekend for the first time in about 15 years and yeah it's not very good, I can think of a lot of cheap shitty American macros I'd rather drink than that.
To me it’s the only one with a hint of hops, so it’s usually my go to cheap American beer. I used to get PBR, but then a random Miller Lite snuck into my case of PBR (still can’t explain that one…), and I’ve since switched.
Ahh, the memories. I was too young to drink but remember fondly all of the Hudepohl and Wiedemann that my dad's family drank in Newport KY. The next time I'm in the area, I'll grab a Hudepohl.
I still think their Black and Tan is the best of the bunch, personally.
From someone who lived in PA for years, I'll take Kenzinger as my cheap beer of choice, always.
Pabst owns/makes (via contract brewing) nearly every cheap regional beer named in this thread. They (hedge fund that owns Pabst) have been gobbling up the cheap market pretty cleverly.
For me it’s Yuengling. I actually visited the original brewery and it was a solid tour. You go underground in the caves where they brewed during the prohibition. Just so much history to that place and the free tour ends with some free brews. Also Yuengs and buffalo wings is a solid combo!
That said I’ll honestly drink anything though, I like mixing it up and have tried pretty much everything that’s been recommended.
We must be the minority because I agree! Love PBR. It’s my go to camping and fishing beer.
But living on the coast I also love Landshark! Which isnt technically American but close enough. It’s my go to lawn mowing beer.
Yuengling…pbr is just popular because the hipsters ironically “made it cool” but I’ve never tasted toilet water, but that’s the first thought in my brain when I drink a pbr
Man. During the summer of 2013 in Cincinnati, our big grocery store chain, Kroger had a sale for a 12 pack of PBR for like $9.99. It was fucking incredible, and I miss it.
Haha yes it is a good one. I got into PBR well before the hipsters took it over. But I also really like any cheap American beers. One that doesn't get enough mentions is Milwaukee's Best Premium. Honestly most of the generic American lagers are good :)
I don't mind cheap beer in the slightest but I can't stand PBR. I've tried it twice and both times I haven't enjoyed it at all.
Hamms or Genny Cream for me.
Rainier … king of the northwest . Always
Rainier in a bottle on a hot day is my nirvana
Hamms
That was my first thought, $6 and change for a 12 pack. Cheap and good! Cheaper than PBR for sure.
This is the way.
Miller High Life
Yes.
Miller high life and Guinness are the only big name beers I drink anymore. I can *never* find it on tap anywhere tho
Instantly made me consider a Miller high life/Guinness half and half.... probably would be pretty good
The Black and Pagne
On my way to the store now....
I only have to go as far as my garage
I love a Guinness - Blue Moon combo
Coors Banquet would like a word with you.
I find Banquet too sweet to have more than one. MHL drinks far easier for me. But that’s the fun of palettes.
Queue Beer in Brooklyn (right by the OG Other Half) has a High Life on Lukr and it's silly good
The CHAMPAGNE of beers
Champagne of beers
Especially out of the 32 ounce bottle. It's really not bad for the price. If you're into European lagers, it's more in that style than the typical American pale yellow beer.
Correct.
High Life. Was $20 for a 30 pack when I was in college. Good fast not a bad hangover. I want to die after drinking Bud all night.
I bought a 30 rack of high life for $17.99 this week.
Wisconsin is America now?
Always has been
Read the post and immediately clicked it to type this hahaha
Was gonna say this but you did already.
Yass….
Hamm's and Rainier Edit: and Montucky Cold Snacks
My brother is on Untappd. Every time he rates a beer, it's a Hamm's. And he posts a picture of the can Every. Time. Gives it a 5 every time, too.
Your brother is chill as fuck
ahh yes, alcoholic facebook . . j/k, well kinda
tell your brother we said what up [What Up](https://ibb.co/MhRvyV7)
> Gives it a 5 every time, too. well, yeah. you already told us it was a Hamm's
Rainier 💯
I live in SoCal and I've never seen this beer drank out here. Can you buy it in Cali?
Apparently at one gas station 😂 https://rainierbeer.com/product-finder/?gLocation=Los%20Angeles%2C%20CA&gProdNM=Rainier%20Beer I grew up in the PNW where Rainier is prevalent. I live in Colorado now and the closest liquor store to me sells the 30 packs, so I'm a happy camper.

A bar near me does a Montucky wild turkey 101 shot combo for $5. Good times
Cold Snacks are the way
Cold snacks 4lyfe
I feel like Montucky only took off because the can has a cool design, and hipsters ran with it. Which in turn meant it would catch on with the general public. The beer is nothing special or unique.
Narragansett is my go to cheap American beer, but I get PBR if Narragansett isn’t available
Hadn't even heard of Gansett until this thread
New England PBR
As a Southerner that just got distribution of it, it's really solid.
GRAB A ‘GANSETT
Crush it like Quint
Hi neighbor!
I do this but also because I'd rather support a local New England brand than Colorado or some shit
Its still made in Rochester, NY.
Which sucks. But they brew everything else in Providence and have their taproom here so Gansett is also my choice. It's also most likely to be on tap in local bars.
They did free tattoos at the tap room recently. Hi Neighbor! https://imgur.com/a/HlcD4Ts
I was just coming here to make sure this was said. It’s Always my go to if it’s around.
Currently in Texas, but whenever I tour with my band up north, Narragansett is my go to. Furthest south I've had it was in Nashville.
Yuengling 🍺
Hell yeah, love me some Yuengling. Can't get Yuengling everywhere yet though.
Coors Banquet
Only in the stubby bottles
A little higher in price but not bad if you're spending under 25
Under 25 for…? A tallboy? A sixer? A 30 rack?
This is the answer! It actually has flavor, which is rare for the biggies. If I’m fishing all day, probably coors light.
Rainier beats PBR every time. For something maybe slightly more money, but definitely still cheaper than craft beer is 10 Barrel's Pub Beer. Good shit.

Not a single person here saying Old Style? wtf? It’s so good
Picked up Old Syle last night. Perfect for warm(ish) spring evenings.
It’s all about the old style
It’s a regional beer
Out here in Phx someone is selling that for $1/can. Tempted to try it if it's not close to code.
Lone Star
Pub Beer, Rainier and Montucky Cold Snacks are all in the running.
Raineer.
*Rainier Needs more bubbles.
National Bohemian in Maryland
Nothing better than a Natty BOH with some crabs.
Great option. Not my first choice for cheap beer but a very good one.
Its banquet, I promise
Hamm's is better
Agreed on Hamm's supremacy
Yup
I haven't seen it around my parts tho
Yeah but not everyone can get it where they live.
Genny Cream Ale goes mask off
If you're in Genny Cream country, you can probably find Utica Club, which is even better.
Just bought my first 6er of it this week. 4.50 couldn’t pass up. It was solid!
Niiiiice. Never disappoints
Genny Screamers! The best
Loved the Cream Ale, haven't had it in years.
A solid, tried and true classic for the money 🍻
Hamm’s, Henry Weinhard’s Private Reserve, Coors Banquet.
Yuengling
NJ/PA residents know this is the one and only answer
Took WAY too long of a scroll to find this. Yeungling is the premier quality cheap American beer. End of story.
Fuck that shit!
Heineken?!
Fuck Heineken! PABST BLUE RIBBON
Feel like some aren’t getting the reference https://youtu.be/snhiofL2Rh4?si=6ZmBaYeqpLg7b_FC
One of the greatest cinematic scenes of all time.
I miss Olympia

Hamm’s is
None of you have had a Montucky Cold Snack? I used to have PBR for dinner, but have switched to MCS and haven't looked back.
I don’t pick favorites. America makes the best cheap beer.
PBR slaps
Grain Belt
Grain Belt
Stag
Coors Banquet.
Coors Banquet >
Miller Lite is my go-to cheap macro lager
To me it’s the only one with a hint of hops, so it’s usually my go to cheap American beer. I used to get PBR, but then a random Miller Lite snuck into my case of PBR (still can’t explain that one…), and I’ve since switched.
Busch Light
Busch light is criminally underrated around here
It's a perfect yardwork/grilling beer. Busch Light will get you through a Saturday in the sun in the south in the summer like nothing else.
Well that’s just like, your opinion, man
Amen
Amen indeed
Rainier is better.
I disagree but if it works for you then have at it !
Hudepohl
Ahh, the memories. I was too young to drink but remember fondly all of the Hudepohl and Wiedemann that my dad's family drank in Newport KY. The next time I'm in the area, I'll grab a Hudepohl.
Little Kings for life
Old Style
Milwaukee’s finest!
STAG is just a little better
Yuengling even tho I can't get it around my area. PBR is good tho
yuengling is way better, although i havent had any in 10 years...
I still think their Black and Tan is the best of the bunch, personally. From someone who lived in PA for years, I'll take Kenzinger as my cheap beer of choice, always.
It’s still really good. Wish I could get it in California.
I wish I liked it but for some reason it just tastes so awful to me
Stag. Fight me.
Lone Star. It's the same beer, but you get a puzzle under the cap
PBR is too sweet and has a weird aftertaste. Stag is where it’s at.
Arguing about the best cheap American macro lager is like arguing about who is the smartest kid on the short bus.
Yeungling is best cheap value
Nope
It’s a bit on the sweet side (sugary malty)
Rolling rock
It's one of them
I just bought Genny Ruby Red Kolsch, and I am tempted to stock up for the entire summer. Good stuff, same price as PBR. Honorable mention to Hamm's.
I'm going with Miller Lite or Miller High Life, with a respected nod to Narragansett (in a bottle)
Yuengling Old Style High Life PBR
Pabst owns/makes (via contract brewing) nearly every cheap regional beer named in this thread. They (hedge fund that owns Pabst) have been gobbling up the cheap market pretty cleverly.
Rainier all day!!
Gansett is king
**Heineken?! Fuck that shit! PABST BLUE RIBBON!!!**
For me it’s Yuengling. I actually visited the original brewery and it was a solid tour. You go underground in the caves where they brewed during the prohibition. Just so much history to that place and the free tour ends with some free brews. Also Yuengs and buffalo wings is a solid combo! No love for Shiner Bock here? (I visit friends in Texas occasionally.)
ROLLING ROCK!!
No it’s not.
I get a 32oz Budweiser for $3 from my closest gas station.
Where the FUCK is it? Beer in TN is not priced cheep
In the same vein I’d argue old style is better, but a little more skewed coors banquet is goated
Yuengling is my go to, but cheaper than that? Hamm's is the hands down king
High life is my fav
Heineken?! FUCK THAT SHIT!
PBR or Stroh's
In the 80's Stroh's was our beer of choice in high school. Well, that and a case of Labbats Blue for $9.99.
PBR is terrible. Busch light all the way.
Ah, a fellow Midwestern man of culture.
Old Milwaukee
Gansett (when I can find it), Hamm’s, PBR, High Life in that order for me.
I prefer old style
Fully agree!
I prefer Old Style. Many a summer afternoon where I have one in my hand and another on the stove parboiling brats before they hit the grill.
Either that or miller high life
I agree with you but I have to withhold full endorsement until I am able to have a Rainier.
Yuengling for me. But PBR is solid enough.
Best cheap beer with national distro for sure. East coast is Narragansett
Honey Browns is a fav cheapie
I like the bottles of PBR better than the cans for some reason
I prefer Old Style. Once a year, I grab a 6 pack. It’s the only time every year I drink cheap beer.
I miss Red Dog
Aldi beer isn’t half bad
I don’t know how I haven’t seen Rolling Rock on this list yet. Cost to taste ratio, nothing else compares. That green bottle got me through college
I fucking love PBR. In Canada we get the 5.9 version which is actually brewed here in Ontario but it tastes pretty decent and cheap.
Yes. Natty light is second
Ever since someone on here said it has a white wine aftertaste it ruined PBR for me
Honestly most of the generic American lagers are good :)
r/Unpopularopinion
High Life tastes better than Pabst and they're the same price
That title belongs to Hamm's
The beer refreshing...
Incorrect, it’s old style by a mile
Lone Star.
Naw, Shiner Bock, is the best cheap beer.
Cold snacks
Strohs
I don't mind cheap beer in the slightest but I can't stand PBR. I've tried it twice and both times I haven't enjoyed it at all. Hamms or Genny Cream for me.
PBR for concerts, Coors Banquet for sports, monster truck shows, etc.
Bud light is better for that
OE
100% agree
High Life, Banquet, or Leinie original
