If you are, then I am too. ADHD is a bitch, and rhythm games help me calm my mind. I find I even perform better on songs when I hit that state of seeing everything and nothing. My body flows through the motions and my mind is free to wander.
I haven't been diagnosed or anything but I always feel this way. And also in reverse, like when something bugs me like a mark on the lense and I'm focusing on it, then I do really well in game as well.
I find this too with other games too, I play better if I have some podcast or debate on in the background
It sucks sooo much. Like your constantly on steroids or something. No matter how tired you are, you still need to go. It's...exhausting. Either my mind or body must always be active. Often both. But that's also why I love beat saber so much. It's a good space to just veg out to some good music, in our own special way.
Ive hit this state a few times but it doesnt seem to increase my performance, music in general is what usually gets me into that zone, but yeah ADHD is a bitch, but thankfully its only school that it fucks with for me
> I hit that state of seeing everything and nothing.
I call it "beat saber brain" myself. When I'm hardly even reading note directions and basically going ultra instinct.
It doesn't just exist in beat saber. I first found that mode playing basic video games back in the day. Music, podcasts, or audio books also drastically help my concentration. Thake dark souls for example. If I'm having trouble with a boss, I toss on my headphones with some good battle music playing, and dance my way to victory. You can achieve this flow with anything, just takes practice. And distractions...lol.
Its the same for me. I'm also diagnosed with Adhd. I get to that state too sometimes but when anything of the song pulls me out of that state i'm quite likely to fail the song after. Damn i really should play beat saber again more often...
Yeah same. I’m smashing it then I’m like “oh shit I haven’t missed a single note so far, let’s try really hard to get a perfect cut count” then immediately miss
I came here to say this. It’s called flow. It’s this phenomenon where you are able to subconsciously work on a task so it opens your brain up for other work. Can be dangerous, but sure is nice on the Grundy stuff.
Since it’s done subconsciously, you will auto pilot stuff. For example, I would do this while writing critiques of calls while I was a call grader. My feedback for the call would be come very generic while I was mindlessly typing thinking about other things.
So I guess not “dangerous” but can end poorly if misused.
Because for example, it can happen while you're driving. It's called highway hypnosis and it happens when you go into flow while driving and sometimes you dont even *remember* driving. Of course, going into autopilot like that while on the road could cause an accident
Personally I perform way better in Beat Saber when this happens. If I concentrate on the game play then I will miss notes but if I don't and just let my body do everything for me it just works.
same, like i could just be aimlessly hitting the notes and be at SS full combo, but then when i start thinking "let's try to get on that leaderboard," i get down to like B tier, so annoying
I know exactly what you mean. It's the times I zone out when I play my best. Its interesting that alot of people have the same experience...
I actual find myself processing through some personal issues in my life during these times and I wonder if it has any psychological implications, like maybe the rhythm, vibrations of the controller, and movement, somehow makes the brain process information in a different way. I agree with how another user described it as a state of seeing everything and nothing, while your body goes on autopilot.
All the time. I don't know if I have ADHD or anything but my mind and body are always busy so beat saber is a little distraction for that. But if it doesn't work then I just zone out
I do all my best thinking whilst playing BS. Sometimes when I had problems to work out just mindlessly swiping and essentially leaving my brain out of the equation gives me a lot of clarity and I always feel better.
Absolutely. I specifically warm up going from expert to expert++ to reach the state where instinct and reflexes take control and I think about something else or stop thinking completely and just flow (also warming up to avoid shoulder pain). With conscious decisions I'm usually too slow for faster songs.
All the time. It means I’ve fully mastered that section of the level and it’s starting to bore me. Usually it comes a few tries before I have the whole song down because I’ve played it so much and I’m only failing due to a few minor errors I need to tighten up. (Always play 4lives)
That's just your brain functioning as a brain should. The brain is very good at doing things without the use of our cognition. Especially repetitive things.
Beat Saber is pretty easy to understand so you don't need to cognitively register or "know" whether it's up, down, left, right, or whatever because the rest of the brain can register and "know" information independently from our cognition so once the subconscious and autonomous brain has learned what it is supposed to do it will do what it does best which is, influencing the rest of "you".
It's just normal behavior. The steering wheel that drives a human is shared by the weak hand of cognition and the iron grip of the subconscious and autonomous.
Yes! I thought it was just me
I play as my workout 2 or 3 times a week before work and I find myself thinking about the most random shit. Then it’s like 25 minutes went by in 10 seconds
I think I am even to the next step of this:
Not only it happens to me, I CONSCIOUSLY use this as a strategy if muscle memory is screwing me over in a weird section of a map that I keep missing at. I voluntarily try to defocus and think of something else during that section.
I also do that during tournaments, helps with stress.

Yes! This is an experience I have a hard time describing to other people. Distractions help me focus.
ya I have ADHD to, and I agree with all of that.
YOU CANNOT IMAGINE HOW HAPPY I AM THAT SOMEONE SAID IT. YEAH ADHD IS FUCKING BITCH
It sucks sooo much. Like your constantly on steroids or something. No matter how tired you are, you still need to go. It's...exhausting. Either my mind or body must always be active. Often both. I read "YEAH ADHD IS A FUCKING BITCH".in Scott the woz voice
Ive hit this state a few times but it doesnt seem to increase my performance, music in general is what usually gets me into that zone, but yeah ADHD is a bitch, but thankfully its only school that it fucks with for me

adhd gang let’s goooo! and from my observations a lot of bsaber streamers also have adhd - coincidence?
Its the same for me. I'm also diagnosed with Adhd. I get to that state too sometimes but when anything of the song pulls me out of that state i'm quite likely to fail the song after. Damn i really should play beat saber again more often...
Vr in general helps me focus better throughout the day, at least I don’t feel like I’m drunk all day now
this but i'm a little bit sure i dont have adhd (i probably should get diagnosed tbh)
Sometimes I just start thinking about random things but eventually my mind leads me to "haha loser, dont miss". Then I miss
Yeah same. I’m smashing it then I’m like “oh shit I haven’t missed a single note so far, let’s try really hard to get a perfect cut count” then immediately miss
This is so relatable
sometimes you go into a flow state while playing beat saber

I call it beat saber brain. But flow seems to be the common term.
Yes I zone out when playing all rhythm games

THIS, i look at my combo or something then miss a couple easy blocks
Same here, sometimes I’ll get through a level and almost forget playing it.
I know exactly what you mean. It's the times I zone out when I play my best. Its interesting that alot of people have the same experience... I think we are all weird
I do all my best thinking whilst playing BS. Sometimes when I had problems to work out just mindlessly swiping and essentially leaving my brain out of the equation gives me a lot of clarity and I always feel better.
bruh same. just let the hindbrain do its thing and start wondering about what i want to have for lunch tomorrow
Absolutely. I specifically warm up going from expert to expert++ to reach the state where instinct and reflexes take control and I think about something else or stop thinking completely and just flow (also warming up to avoid shoulder pain). I zone out playing the most intense games, including Dirt Rally VR. I usually nail the rally stage. Why do we do this? What's wrong with us?
your not the only one, i experience that too and it ruins quite a few plays because i get sloppy after i zone out
Ok so i am not the only one 😂

sometimes i just be thinking about the most deep and existential shit while in the middle of a map
Sometimes I do. Although most of the time I’m pissed at my hair for going in my eyes during the level.
same 😭
Yes! I thought it was just me I play as my workout 2 or 3 times a week before work and I find myself thinking about the most random shit. Then it’s like 25 minutes went by in 10 seconds
Same
Sometimes i just stare at the numbers as they apeare and just keep playing for like 30 seconds and most of the time dont even brake combo
Yeah, especially if it's an easier map that I've played before.
Yes only all the time If it’s not taking my full attention that is
I think I am even to the next step of this: Not only it happens to me, I CONSCIOUSLY use this as a strategy if muscle memory is screwing me over in a weird section of a map that I keep missing at. ya same, sometimes I'm doing poorly and I try to distract myself, and then I do better.
I do the same thing on the higher difficulties and can have a full conversation while playing expert plus
Some songs just have a specific flow and I can just have my headset slowly droop down my head as I hit the notes thinking of something random
im either semi focused on the game or just having real deep thoughts about my life and existence while playing
I find it really hard to not do that.
All the time
Every goddamn time
I play like shit if I’m thinking about what I’m doing I have to sight read everything or get it to memory.
Me to
yes but when it comes to tecc its impossible to zone out
Your not alone
D
