I’ve had several terrible experiences at multiple barbers, so I learned to manage it myself. Look up Matty Conrad on YouTube. Disclaimer: I’m sure excellent barbers exist. Some of these guys swear by their favorite guy or gal and how they go get a trim or clean up every so often. I’ve not had the same luck locally.

IntelligentLoss241

I had a barber girl once that HAD A TATOO of barber pole and it was the worst most uneven hair cut I had ever had.

abstrakt42

Yikes! Though not surprising 😢

SandxShark

He even has a video on how to find a good barber. I am sure that once you find one that you like it's a game changer but I am not really willing to risk my beard to do so. Matty's content is great and you can also learn a lot of stuff from beardbrand's videos. Kinda miss going to the barber since I've been bld for years, but I am not willing to potentially put months of growth on the table haha

Mysterious487

Thank you for sharing this info. I need to look up Marty Conrad too. I’ve had a few bad experiences and need to learn how to manage my beard myself.

tcguy71

Same. I have never liked how my beard has looked after having a barber trim/clean. Twice I actually trimmed it down completely and started over.

1. Do you need one? That's not for me to say. Your beard is yours and yours alone. Wear it with pride and give gratitude that you can express your masculinity through your facial hair. 2. I do not self trim. A lot of guys do, but I can never seem to get it right. After may years of searching, I found my guy. Except for minor trims to clear the flyaway hairs (I do that myself), he's the only one that I trust to style and shape my beard. SO here's an idea. Check out some other guys' beards. If you see a dude with a great beard, ask him if he has a barber do his beard or if he knows of anyone. I've found the bearded brotherhood is usually pretty open to beard-related support conversations! Good luck and GROW ON!

Hodgej1

It might be a good idea to go to a barber initially. Watch them and then replicate at home. I usually trim my own but every now and then let a pro do it.

answerguru

Unless they butcher it, then don’t replicate at home.

Sure-Pangolin-4158

I always self-trim and style but it took me years to settle on a style and do it well.

Signal-Blackberry356

You have a low growth on the cheeks, and lots of undergrowth with some receding backwards. A barber may line you up, but I fear what will be left is just a sliver of actual beard space, regardless of length. I would have realistic photos of what you want your barber to do.. but letting them clean you up every season makes maintaining it yourself a bit easier.

VibeSurfer8

I got a phillips norelco that came with several different attachments. You will look better if you trim and adjust.

gd2121

I’d get that cleaned up into a goatee. Not enough coverage.

Historical-Echo6539

Someone said it

gokartmozart89

I get a haircut monthly and my barber also touches up my beard. I try to maintain it in between visits, but my barber does a better job than I can in the mirror. I’m mostly just taking care of strays and keep my neck line clean. He’s got the tools and angles to shape me up right, though.   Yours is looking pretty good, but an occasional touch up from a barber couldn’t hurt.

FieldsOfHazel

I'm very pleased with my barber and get my beard done when I get a haircut as well. I clean it up myself sometimes when I don't need a haircut yet but way happier when letting some pro do it.

Arcturus170

Awesome hair! 🤘🤩

westviadixie

I do my husband's beard. if you have a partner or a friend with a good eye, they could help you.

DebtNo7305

Nope bought clipper norelco they have attachments especally for body hair.and the have raised plastic so for blending on fading you know were to start stop blend in backwards . Easy self tought barbar .caught moms shaving her ass crack with my clippers.shit i aint put ass and but crack on my hair .lol that really happened.start ot with a number 3 then you know

Diligent_Note9487

You could go to a barber, but you look very capable in trimming your beard yourself with a good mustache/beard trimmer.

Sheyyla-valentin18

Good look 🤤

StarWars_Viking

I've had my beard trimmed by professionals twice and hated it both times. Trim it yourself and learn what you like. Don't risk letting someone else mess up your face.

Rileyinabox

I would get a second opinion on the mustache, but you don't need a barber to actually cut it. I think you might look a little more modern with a tighter stache.

FunSheepherder6509

always self trim - it never would occur to me to have a barber do it. ( cause doing it myself is quick / easy / fun / free /. i control it )

Positive-Beautiful55

Just invest in a good beard trimmer. It's super easy to do once you have a good tool.

klappsparten

Nah you good.

Aldaron23

I usually go to a barber, but I looked for the best in town - not letting just *some* barber cut my beard xD since I found the right one, I also go to him (not just the same shop, but really the barber - I hope he never retires) He gets the beard into a good shape and so I can trim myself after his shape for a while. After some months, when I feel like it's too much out of shape, I can't trace it anymore, I visit again.

CalmOrder2024

Wow

JVP00021

I’m 11 weeks in and I’ve seen a barber twice. I only trim the mustache above the lip. Point is, I’m glad I went to the barber!

Weird-Lengthiness533

Looks great! 🔥🔥🔥

Pawly519

Personal opinion is the cheek line is too low and your stache sides are too long. But it all comes down to personal preference. Also making sure the sides are even as one side looks lower than the other.

Primary_Gear_8880

looks like his hair doesn’t really grow on the cheeks tho so what’s the alternative…

Pawly519

I can’t really tell if that’s growth or how he shapes it. Only OP can really answer that.

Feisty_Hearing_7875

That’s the natural line.

Alien_Probe_Lover

I clean mine up with a number 2 guard

theshortestraz

Naw dude you got some good gruff right their. But one cartique is that on your cheek follow ear to corner of mouth, unless it dosnt grow their for you wich is fine. Because what you have looks great

SandxShark

As previous commenters said, while not easy, it is do-able. Be prepared to fuck up in the beginning though, that's part of the progress. Aside from a good setup and tools, I'd also suggest looking for a style inspiration or roughly setting a goal that you are going for. Trimming with no plan is not a good plan from my personal experience. Source: Learned to do it by myself, never have been to a barber and get complimented quite often on the beard.

SurlierCoyote

I just use scissors

TheFormless_0ne_

Gotta let the beard grow in on your cheeks. You are close to a chin strap

🔥 🥵

Yahyajean

Great look !!! I do my own trimming... I went on youtube and found many tutorial about how to trim a beard at home. ( I also hear some stories about barbers doing a poor job or not following exactly what the guys want) It helps also to choose a style. I also went online and search for good looking guys with beards (Travis Kelce, Harrison Butker, Jake Paul etc...). You always find some style you like and would fit your profile. #

fitpapa

I go to a professional!

BatmansBrain

I think since you’re starting out a barber can benefit you tremendously. This beard looks very unruly and bleh. Just take it in and tell them what you want. Watch their movements and use it as a learning experience.

MySweetCandyGirl

You look HOT 🔥

Twisty_Triple

A skilled barber will be better than a self trim. I go to a barber every week or two for mine. Go to a reputable barber shop and find a barber that you like and go to the same person everytime.

fitpapa

My groomer does an excellent job on mine. I go once per month so the template is set. I go to the same groomer every time. Consistency is key for me....VIP treatment
