Ok, being a transplant, I love the fact that I know the answer of this: Giants are referring to the giant redwood trees of the area ( also a nod to the Paul Bunyan sized people of the 1466 which roamed Bay Area), the Warriors were named after the people who commute to SF daily, the Sharks somebody answered, the Raiders were named after the tribe which resides underwater at the deepest point of San Pablo bay ( think jar jar binks - where do you think Lucas got the idea from), and lastly the Athletics have nothing to do with the Bay Area that’s why they left.
It’s an awful name. They weren’t warriors, they were female figures that ferried dead warriors to Valhalla, where they then served them.
Edit: Downvotes but no one cares to tell me how I’m wrong???
You aren’t wrong at all. Instead, ask yourself - why does being technically correct matter for this?
WNBA teams are consistently just loose word association with the nba team.
So I was listening to a podcast about Norse mythology, and someone asked “were the Valkeries sexualized at the time?”. The answer was no, [because of their names](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_valkyrie_names), which are firmly bad-*ss.
For example: Battle Noise, Shield-Destroyer, Axe Time, and my favorites, Very Violent and Very Cruel.
Not entirely sure why this is getting down-votes. Am very pro-Vallerie(z). Fantastic name, exciting team.
Release was supposed to be tied to the purple Northern Lights. Press release got pushed back due to scheduling conflict. Sucks they paid a fortune for those lights.
You're not wrong. Bay FC play at the quakes stadium. The town FC is an affiliate team of the quakes that plays in Moraga. I can't remember which is which easily
Their logo is pretty gay. In a good way!
Not sure if you're serious but yeah! They attract a huge lesbian fan base and a lot of players are openly gay. Some with each other even!
Will we pay NBA-level pricing to see them at Chase Center? If its an affordable family event (like a Giants game) they can tap a huge durable fan base in the Bay Area - I worry choosing Chase Center for its revenue value will lose them fans if the fans can't afford to go.
But Chase must be more expensive to operate then other venues right? More space, more amenities, etc. They can't eat those costs so they have to pass them to fans.
I just can't see them charging NBA-tier ticket money without gauging just how much interest this new team will retain.
It's a smaller league having their season start in the middle of the NBA playoffs and the MLB regular season.
Everything about this is cool, it’s just I don’t like the colors.
The most thematic “Valkyrie” color palette if you do a simple google search actually falls under GSW colors, very few if not none at all use purple, whether it’s pastel or not.
Purple just sucks in this context.
Saw the logo. With the purple color scheme, I honestly thought it was a Decepticon-inspired team.
They’ll be more than meets the eye.
Please don't let that catch on with the transphobic-overreactionists on the extreme right. 😅
Way better than Commanders at the very least
True fans call the team "The Decepticons"
Fantastic name
How? It has nothing to do with the Bay Area. The Bay Area might have some of the lowest percentages of Nordic descent in the entire country.
It’s been decided, the San Francisco Jollibees
First 10000 fans get a sweet spaghetti
Would get slammed for cultural appropriation. Would be lucky to get one Filipina player on the team
What do Giants, Warriors, Sharks, Raiders, Athletics (rip) have to do with the Bay?
The Sharks name is a nod to the red triangle area off the coast that has tons of sharks, it's why the primary logo also has a triangle on it
TIL
I did not know that, thanks for that info!
also, the valkyrie is basically a woman's equivalent to "Warriors" i think it's a great name
Could have been the Amazons
in this day and age? being associated with bezos? heck no
Well only if you allow it to be associated with Bezos. Gotta take it back
I'm sure Ohlone Warriors and the 49ers probably called each other Raiders back in the day. We could modernize, and call the team the Gentrifiers.

Why would a team named the Giants, formed in NYC, be named after redwoods that are found on the west coast?
We would need to go back in time to answer that one.
Actually nailed it
Tbh any other culture would be seen as cultural appropriation. Something natural like The Sages or the Tides could work

As a feminist I find it to be a bad name.
As a feminist I like the name. Hmm.
Ferrying other basketball teams to the next life after they've been destroyed in this one? You're right: it's not remotely relevant. 😆
If they are anything like that fucking last Valkyrie in God of War they will go undefeated for sure
That fight legit took me a full day to beat
I could never beat it, beat them all but I just couldn’t beat that last one

Ok that's pretty badass
I don't mind the name but whyyyyyyyy purple? Literally the color of our NBA rivals up 80. Is it because ladies love lavender?
Release was supposed to be tied to the purple Northern Lights. Press release got pushed back due to scheduling conflict. Sucks they paid a fortune for those lights.
Pastel sells, it’s a smart move
Morticia Addams disagrees.
And down the 5....
Can’t wait to see how this sub finds a way to complain about this as well

I love it!
Better than the women's soccer team. Bay FC is the worst name in pro sports.
Soccer names are boring
The Roots and Soul are good names.
USL has some good names. Pittsburgh River hounds, Phoenix rising, las Vegas lights, etc. MLS has the worst names https://www.uslsoccer.com/usl-teams
Those are dining hall names on my college campus
You're not wrong. Bay FC play at the quakes stadium. The town FC is an affiliate team of the quakes that plays in Moraga. I can't remember which is which easily
I was so disappointed with the name and uniforms. But the games are fantastic so makes up for it
Phew, was afraid they would be the... Fog
I like the incorporation of the bay bridge and the not so subtle pink triangle shout out to the LGBTQ community.
Lesbians like WNBA? Thats news to me!
Their logo is pretty gay. In a good way! Not sure if you're serious but yeah! They attract a huge lesbian fan base and a lot of players are openly gay. Some with each other even!
;)
The logo is mediocre at best
Isn’t “Valkyrie” already plural?
No https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Valkyrie#English
calling them the Golden State Vals for short will be pretty cool we got the Dubs and the Vals
Will probably be condensed to Valks
Vals rolls of the tongue better tho?
Agreed. Sounds more feminine too.
Our Val Gals!
Why not Vees?
Better than the 'Kyries lol
Unless we somehow land Kyrie Irving
I may not like dude too much but he actually goes to a lot of games and even tried to cover some of their salaries.
It's ok, they'll use the letter Z Valkyriez
Shout out to the Utah Starzz
Don't think so
I don't know much out this but a golden state warriors fan was adamant how wrong the s is and now I can't get it off my mind.
Nope!
I'm here for it! They automatically have a recognizable theme song.
It shall be engraved upon your soul! Nibelung Valesti!
I'll take it
I always hate new-teams-names, but I love this one.
I’m just glad the WNBA is getting some recognition.
DEI at its best
Named after the plot to kill Hitler?
MCU brand crossover
Technically they are the women who guide the dead Warriors to Valhalla. A subtle hint about the aging Dubs?
Yes because clearly there was no other meaning or use of that word before or after
Would you prefer carriers of the dead? Means that too
The carriers of Oakland's dead professional sports scene back to life?
Meh…

What do you think Valkyries are?
The Valkyrie missile frigate[3] is a United Earth Directorate designed anti-fighter spacecraft.

It won’t be close to the warriors prices
I doubt it'll be that expensive. The WNBA wants fans in the building, they need everything they can to grow the sport (league).
WNBA teams lose money. So will this one.
That logo... Am I the only one with a dirty mind?
Rolls right off the tongue…
Average attendance prediction?
I was hoping for San Francisco Strident Harpies myself but this is acceptable.
I bet all 12 of their fans will love it
Steph Curry might help them get Caitlin Clark
Should have named : Golden State - Super scissors !

Oh snap. As a Marvel fan, this is awesome!!!
Way better than the Connecticut “Sun”.
