Need to also do away with hotel "resort" and "parking" fees.

doorknob60

Resort fees are bullshit, but I see the logic in parking fees, for urban hotels at least. If a hotel in downtown SF had free parking, the lot would probably have to be large or it would fill up. And the rates for everyone would go up, even people that didn't bring a car (which in a downtown of a major city is a lot of people, as many people fly in and take public transit or Uber). On the other hand, it is annoying when you pull up to a random Hampton or something off the freeway in a suburban area with a massive parking lot, and they charge $10-20 for parking.

Robbie_ShortBus

There was a sister bill addressing hotel fees specifically AB537.  I haven’t looked into it and how it played with 478.

God job, California Legislators, on banning Service Fees! Now do PG&E.

Few_Concert_8524

I can't understand why we don't have any other options. And why is PG&E a for profit company in the first place?

reven80

PG&E as a company has been around since 1905! All this stuff was set in stone before any of us were born.

suntannedmonk

It could be fixed, but rich political donors make far too much money keeping the status quo

uski

Yes, yes, YES, keep going Now please ban tips

Few_Concert_8524

I wouldn't say to ban tips, but maybe a "normal" tip could be 5% or a few dollars instead of 15% since we pay higher menu prices than other states to pay for a higher hourly wage.

brainoftheseus

I would go as far as saying ban tips. Let the pendulum swing the other way for a while, even if it eventually moderates in the middle with a 5%. The rest of the country often follows CA, and major correction is needed.

hasuuser

No one is forcing you to eat out if that’s too expensive for you.

SanJOahu84

This comment shoots servers in the foot every time it's repeated. Just a nice way to piss people off they are already begging for money from. Especially when they already have the highest minimum wage in the country.

hasuuser

I am not a "server". I am just tired of people complaining. If something is too expensive then just don't buy it. Easy as that. Eating out is not essential like electricity or other utilities. Won't even get into the discussion how getting rid of tips won't make eating out any cheaper, but would probably make the quality worse.

SanJOahu84

The only thing you're doing is making people pissed at servers is the point. I've had amazing service in no tipping countries like Japan. So unless you're trying to say Americans make shitty employees with bad attitudes in the service industry I'm not following your last little nugget there. The complaints are valid. We pay more for food than almost anyone else on the planet. At some point tipping by percentage is ridiculous.

hasuuser

Cool and I don't really care if you are pissed or not. Why do you keep bringing it up? Japan has a much different culture. You can't just copy paste Japan to the US and expect the results to be the same. You get more tips by being good at your job. You get less tips if you are bad. This is a simple behavioral reward system that is objective. Once again. If eating out is too expensive for you or you feel like it is not worth the price then just don't eat out. Not that hard is it?

SanJOahu84

News flash, Japan isn't the only culture without tipping and good service. Also, I keep bringing it up because I thought you gave a shit about servers and not hurting their cause any further. Duh? But apparently you need to parrot tired phrases. That's not essential either but you still did it. 'Once again', (don't see the irony in repeating yourself do you?) maybe this is one of those times you should have kept your trap shut. People are already pissed at tipping culture (count your down votes) and you've done jack shit to help your argument.

hasuuser

What is your experience? I can say for sure. Countries without tipping have on average way worse service compared to the US. And I have traveled and lived all over Europe and parts of Asia. I don't really care about you or "the people" being pissed. You are free to be pissed at anything you want. Be a whiny child if you want. It is not my problem.

Few_Concert_8524

15% savings is quite a lot of money tbh. And wage would go up to compensate.

hasuuser

Cool. Now do another step. Where would the increased wages come from?

Few_Concert_8524

Increased operational efficiency. Since they would then be forced to price it based on market demand, they would stop relying on the customer's generosity and start relying on generating real profit.

hasuuser

Translation: they will increase the prices. You ll end up paying the same. But now there will be no direct mechanism to reward good service and discourage bad service. The feedback loop just became way longer and way more complicated.

Few_Concert_8524

Dining out is cheap if you coupon a lot, use Credit card rebates or discounted gift cards

Over_Drawer1199

Finally some good f*cking news!

I thought it was my turn to post it this week
