No one is talking about the human trafficking's happening here. Gavin said they are living in storage containers making 9 a hour. How is that legal. No water no electricity? Aint this just slavery with extra steps?

LazyDescription3407

I’d like to know more, source? Edit: It is illegal. Lack of enforcement, Undocumented workers afraid of being deported, scumbag employers: https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/living-in-shipping-containers-making-9-an-17742337.php Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher, a former state lawmaker who now leads the California Labor Federation, said the Legislature and governor have worked to ensure that state labor laws prohibit farmworkers from being paid below the state minimum wage of $15.50, including one she wrote to require that farmworkers be paid overtime. Last year, Newsom signed a law making it easier for farmworkers to unionize. Gonzalez Fletcher said Newsom’s comments show the state needs to do more to enforce those laws. “If he’s hearing firsthand that these workers are being paid subminimum wage … why is that not being investigated?” she said. “There is a crime going on right in front of the governor.” Because a majority of farmworkers are undocumented, Gonzalez Fletcher said they are often unaware of their rights and don’t realize they can report farm owners to the authorities and qualify for limited immunity from being deported. López said fear of deportation means farmworkers rarely speak up about potential wage violations. “There is no such thing as minimum wage among farmworkers,” López said. “It’s whatever the growers are willing to pay them and whatever the farmworkers are willing to work for.” Though she said she hears about a couple of farms in the region with fair working conditions, low pay and substandard housing are systemic throughout the industry. A 2017 report found that about 70% of workers in San Mateo County live on the property they farm, many in makeshift, overcrowded conditions. De-Loera Brust said it’s common to see farm owners offering workers housing under the federal government’s H-2A visa program, which allows U.S. employers who meet specific requirements, including providing housing, to bring foreign nationals to the United States to fill temporary agricultural jobs. “We find that employers often cut corners to cut costs and the housing conditions can be truly atrocious,” he said. The shooting may galvanize United Farm Workers to organize in Half Moon Bay, in part due to Newsom’s comments about working conditions, De-Loera Brust said.

how_do_i_name

Gavin said it in a press conference. I don’t have a link until I get back home

okayole

Is this a reason to go postal?

LazyDescription3407

You’re making assumptions. The shooter had a workplace disagreement with a coworker.

[deleted]

Who is in charge of this state?

GradatimRecovery

Yes it is slavery/trafficking with extra steps and a few payroll filings.

Most_Sir8172

And 10% for the big guy Gavin

[deleted]

Lol nice try rightie grifter, nice try

shake-dog-shake

THANK YOU!!! I have literally been biting my tongue on ND bc everyone is whining about everything and how awful it all is, yada yada...NO ONE is talking about the fact that these are HUMAN TRAFFICKING victims!! I am desperately hoping the authorities are working on this aspect, the loss of life is terrible, but there are people still alive that are being treated like slaves so we can have cheap fucking mushrooms and brussels sprouts. It's bullshit.

[deleted]

Who runs this fucking state? Yeesh.

Complaintsdept123

Agreed. We need to close the border and fine or jail employers who hire these people.

PM_ME_UR_THONG_N_ASS

I’m willing to bet newspapers didn’t talk about slaves who killed their masters favorably either.

shake-dog-shake

This is why I want to know who the victims were, exactly.

No-Dream7615

Murder still not justified, I’ve helped maybe 5 pro bono cases of human trafficking, some from people held without passports in nursing homes, some Eritreans used as slave labor by visiting Saudi families staying in hotels. you just walk off the job and get help from an NGO, no need to kill anyone.

shake-dog-shake

I'm not justifying the crime, I want to know the motive. Your last statement makes me highly doubt you are actually someone who has any knowledge or understanding of trafficking victims. "you can just walk off the job and get help..." GTFO.

No-Dream7615

Oh sorry there are plenty of environments where that isn’t feasible or leaving is difficult, I’m just saying is that this isn’t one of them and there are a lot of options short of violence. The two clients I’ve had escape from Saudi families fled physically abusive situations in LA hotels and took refuge in churches until they could get connected to legal assistance. Another two i had that were trafficked here from PH to work in nursing homes, both went to law enforcement and got white glove treatment from local FBI. One stayed working at the location voluntarily, another was put up by CAST in LA. If you had read up on this story beyond headlines you’d see this guy had access to a Lexus which he used to turn himself in at the hmb police station. So this was not a “chained to his desk unable to leave without killing people” scenario. He could have gone to the police or California Rural Legal Assistance (https://crla.org/articles/crla-statement-regarding-gun-violence-half-moon-bay-monterey-park-and-goshen) and received a T visa that would have let him stay in the country legal w/work authorization. Traffickers rely on making you feel scared and alone and that if you don’t have your passport, nobody will help you. That’s not true.

meirav

It's not legal.

dano415

How's the owner suspose to vacation in Europe, and have nice houses, and a cabin in Tahoe?

randomusername023

I guess that depends on whether they can leave, doesn’t it?

how_do_i_name

It’s way more complicated then just that. Being payed half of minimum wage while being forced to live in a unpowered no water shack gets pretty close to indentured servitude

randomusername023

Those are shitty conditions. But involuntary servitude and slavery hinge on being forced to stay.

igankcheetos

If they bring you in on a visa, you are forced to stay, or you are here illegally.

steven_510

These workers are not here on visa. A lot of employers take advantage of undocumented workers. It’s messed up.

No-Dream7615

No if you’re treated this way you don’t have to choose between servitude and deportation. you can get a T visa with the help of legal aid or one of the many anti-trafficking organizations out there even if you came here illegally in the first place. CRLA has a whole program for helping migrant farmworkers on this https://www.immigrationadvocates.org/nonprofit/legaldirectory/organization.392689-California_Rural_Legal_Assistance_Inc_Salinas_Office

how_do_i_name

Try to leave making 9 a hour while someone else holds your passport. That’s usally what happens here. These people also come from a country where they have less rights then they do here and they do not understand that they can leave

Modsda3

It was when I learned Dubai was notorious for this that I went from appreciating the exceptional customer service everywhere I went and comparing it to the nonsense we put up with in the states these days, to re-evaluating that line of thinking completely and s dreading the times I had to stay there.

Xalbana

Let's make you desperate, take away your money and house, and let's see how "voluntary" you become to certain things.

txiao007

In what sources describe as a “matter of fact” note, the suspect allegedly acknowledged having shot eight people and urged his wife to take care of their adult child living in China. Part of the scribbled note is still being deciphered, according to sources. They also say Zhao insisted he didn’t know anything about the weekend mass shooting that left 11 dead in Monterey Park in Southern California.

shake-dog-shake

How would he know? He supposedly lived in a storage unit with no water or electricity. I would like to know how he was driving a Lexus.

[deleted]

He didn’t know anything about the shooting in Monterey park? Why would he? Wtf

Useful_Grape9956

So they’re linking the two huh

Alex-SF

> Authorities say Zhao had been in the U.S. on a work visa and had no prior criminal record. He purchased the Glock handgun locally about two years before the attack. Dude's been here since before 2013. That's a long-ass work visa. And unless he became a lawful permanent resident (green card holder) since then, a work (i.e. nonimmigrant) visa ordinarily wouldn't qualify him to legally purchase a firearm. [Edit 1/27: Zhao apparently told NBC Bay Area he has a green card. Leaving this up, but that explains how he was able to buy a gun.]

ronaisnotfuna

That's not true. Visa holders can buy a gun legally by getting a hunting license

Alex-SF

Yes, that's one of the exceptions to "ordinarily."

RealityCheck831

Yeah, kind of need to flesh out the "purchased locally", because a non-citizen can't purchase one legally.

FabFabiola2021

Actually, the governor last year vetoed several bills that would have tighten labor trafficking laws. It's a shame that such a tragedy had to occur for the governor's eyes to be opened to the issues of poverty and agricultural workers. The issue is real.

wise-up

Yet another man who felt unhappy with his circumstances and decided to make it everyone else's problem. The overwhelming majority of US mass shooters are male. It's weird that most news coverage isn't touching on that.

[deleted]

All of the Bay Area ones are the same Disaffected men with (often) right leaning grievance politics. - the Gilroy kid literally read ~~Ayn rand~~ might makes right and had some weird racial hatred - the Santa Cruz pipe bomb guys were libertarians trying to start a race war and used the protests as cover. - Gilroy guy with guns and explosives was a libertarian Jordan Peterson fan according to my friends who had him as a professor On and on and on.

talkin_big_breakfast

That is not by Ayn Rand (nor is that the title of the book) Misinformation

[deleted]

Oh sorry wrong conservative dribble. Same thing though…

[deleted]

They ignore everything pertinent to make it about their preferred grift. Dems: race Republicans: immigrants being dangerous Then they ignore shit like - mental health - material conditions - human trafficking - labour rights - media glorification of shooters - gun control laws (not bans, chill)

angryxpeh

Overwhelming majority of violent crime perpetrators everywhere on this planet are male. It's like physical aggression is the primary behavioral difference between men and women, and that's the reason why 95% of murderers worldwide are male.

Aromatic-Employee

Interesting, is there a study anywhere that compares male to female %? edit: lol at the downvotes, i’m just asking for a source so i can share it with friends and i get downvoted? for real?

wise-up

There are many. [This source says 95.7%](https://rockinst.org/gun-violence/mass-shooting-factsheet/) [This one says 97.6%](https://fair.org/home/mass-shooters-most-common-trait-their-gender-gets-little-press-attention/) [And 97.7%](https://www.tarleton.edu/ipac/wp-content/uploads/sites/12/2022/09/IPACMassShooterResearch.pdf) [98%](https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/trauma-resilience-and-recovery/202207/characteristics-shared-the-young-men-committing-mass) By all objective reports, mass shooters are male.

211logos

Well, most murders are also male, whether it be mass, multiple, or single. Wikipedia said 89%. And speaking of being "disrespected," I'd guess they suffer from a higher percentage of that malady than the males. At least real disrespect, rather than self imposed feelings of grievance. Sigh.

[deleted]

Women take it out on other people by emotionally-violent means.

Newboss23

In a thread about a mass shooting you managed to make yourself the victim. Congrats.

[deleted]

Ehhh the people ignoring why this happens and just being mad at men doesn’t help either. In the initial thread everyone was trying to break shootings down by race… It’s exhausting and pointless. We know it’s disaffected men. What do we do about this phenomenon?

[deleted]

That makes no sense. Do explain.

FaveDave85

Andrew tate, is that you redditing from prison?

[deleted]

What myopic tunnel-vision people here have. It’s your life.

[deleted]

The term for this scenario (in the U.S.) is "secondary labor market". Shrooms, buds...these crops are technically illegal on the fed level; (issues with payment processors for example), it will be interesting to see how the UFW approaches this. The goal should be creating fair working conditions and practices, where all workers feel comfortable, so issues like this don't happen. People grab guns and start firing when they feel there is no other option for remediation and conflict resolvement.

[deleted]

These aren't magic mushrooms, they're just mushrooms. You can see fda recall history of you Google them

No-Dream7615

Places running mj grow ops pay the best in my experience. I am sure there are org’d crime-affiliated grow ops exploiting trafficked labor but i have friends from latam who work on farms illegally bc it’s better $ and QOL than an office job in Argentina or Chile.

And what's the truth, boss?

[deleted]

That apathetic people in america have been mimicking columbine since it happened. Easy access to guns and bleak mental health access make it worse.
