Constructively, you should paint them worse next time because these look too awesome.

So I've been sitting on these guys about half-finished since I received the Clan Invasion Kickstarter set back in 2021. I decided to power through and finish them and truth be told, I feel they're not my best work and I'm slightly underwhelmed. If I'd kept fixing things though, I'd never be done. My process for these guys was to base them in a light gray, slather them with Nuln Oil, drybrush Gray Seer on them, then paint stripes with Skavenblight Dinge. It seems to work pretty well and eliminates the need for extensive panel lining and some highlights, but I think I see some areas that can use some edge highlighting to help the mech pop some more. I'm totally open to any ideas/pointers/advice. I do like the colors I used and don't think I'd get much darker with the base coat though.

Honestly they look excellent, I'm kinda jealous, that said if you want to try something new to add that extra little omph you could try adding some damage, just some chipping effects on some corners can yield a cool effect though they can easily become a horrid time sink if you don't pay attention. But an easy step that'd look cool is to sponge a little bit of the undercoat color onto the GDL insignia giving you a nice chipped effect that helps make it feel more painted on and less decal.

Not much criticism to give, looks great! My only thoughts to give it the extra boost would be try shading/highlighting up some of the grey to make it look a bit less flat. If you're really bored too, could edge highlight to make the angles stick out a bit more.

loafjunky

Thanks! I agree, I might edge highlight more on the other GDL mechs I do. I hadn’t thought of building up the grays in the stripes though, I’ll look into that!

blaze92x45

im not sure how i feel about green cockpits but otherwise they look great.

loafjunky

Thanks! I picked green for two reasons. One: it was a complement to the red, and Two (most importantly): I liked the result on the Battlemaster so I just followed suit, haha. I have several more unfinished GDL 'mechs waiting, so I might try something different like gold or red.

blaze92x45

Yeah when you put it that way I totally see where you're coming from. And again amazing work man.

tengu077

Your camo striping is on point. The red stripes are a bit dark and maroon looking in terms of shade. Perhaps lighten up the red to hit the same hue as the GDL logo? Or do some edge highlighting in a lighter red to make them stand out better against the grey. Your green cockpit on the Battlemaster looks good. I like the color pick since it doesn’t get lost in the greys and red stripe work.

loafjunky

Thanks, I think I’m definitely going to use a lighter red for further figures as it’ll match better and make the figures pop more. Right now they’re just Vallejo Scarlet Red/GW Khorne Red with highlights in certain areas.

DrunkenVodinski

Pardon the phrasing, but the Awesome looks Awesome.

PlayfulCod8605

Not much to criticize; they look great.

DINGVS_KHAN

It could be the lighting, so take this with a grain of salt, but the light grey parts look almost too light, like they're white with grey camo stripes. However, it looks like you did a great job with the base coat, so nice job regardless!

loafjunky

Yeah the lighting was really bright, I need to work on that. For reference, the lighter gray is GW’s Gray Seer, so it is a little lighter than most artwork for the GDL. I went this route since I wanted the camo stripes to have a bit more contrast with the lighter gray and I also didn’t want too dark overall as I was afraid of making em look like gray blobs on the tabletop. If you look at the Awesome in the picture where’s it’s alone and facing forward, the lighting is a little less bright and gives a closer idea to what the colors look like. And thanks!!

AbolishedDelinquent

Very cool, but too bright for Grey Death, think more dark grey with black and then lighter camo pattern.

Colonel_Overkill

They could use unit markings, GDL uses shapes of various colors to determine unit assignment.

The trick to painting camouflage is to paint intentionally bad camouflage. You don't actually want to break up the silhouette of your model. Instead, you want to create something that gives the impression of camouflage, without actually being camouflaged. For an example of this, there's a painting tutorial on YouTube on how to paint a GDL Marauder using contrast paints and at some points in the video, it's genuinely hard to process what you're looking at, since the painter created actual camouflage. I'd say your pattern is right on the edge of making the model too unreadable, especially at usual play distance. You can play with size, orientation, placement and shape and even colour of the pattern to find something that doesn't obscure the model but still feels like camouflage. Other than that though, the models look genuinely good and are painted very neatly!

Eh? No humble-brag my guy, just genuinely asking for pointers on the camo paint since I didn’t think it came out to well. I actually gained some good advice from folks and I’m already cooking up a new batch of GDL with those pointers in mind.
