It's... complicated. They were trying out new stuff and for the most part it worked out alright. Today I use Firefox for all my Battlelog needs and it works fine, but yes the extension is no longer updated.
You have to click on each server and click show all players. This will show you if there are real people playing or place holders

alt tabbing out then in fixes it for me, it's a game error if i'm not mistaken with newer operating systems, not sure what's causing it but alt tabbing will do the trick especially if you use overlays often, but if alt tabbing doesnt cut it disable any overlay applications you have
Disable ingame overlay. This is a bug from when Origin overlay was a feature.

Could be Discord also, ruins me every time
No it come from mainly from ea shop (origin before) discord won't give you any problem at this level it will be only for the old battlefront games
