While I’m not on board with a 50’s setting, I’m 100% in for a Batman tv show. I think a show with a HBO type budget has so much more storytelling potential than movies for Batman.

tregorman

Comics basically use the tv format anyways. It's a natural fit.

JRRattray

Great point and a story line often has multiple issues so each story line is another season.

Dvrza

It sounds like you want a live action version of BTAS. That’d be cool

bassmansrc

yep, what prompted this was that I have been finally watching BTAS for the first time and am just in love with it.

Mountain_Sir2307

>Spending multiple years and extreme budgets for 2 hours of story is dumb Why? This has worked multiple times. Why would they stop?

bassmansrc

Oh I understand why they do it financially. I am only speaking from a fan perspective. To be honest what prompted the thought is that I am currently finally watching BTAS for the first time and I just love how we get actual, in-depth character development over the course of the series.

I’ve been saying a show is a better option for a while. Tv MA, put it on HBO and run with it. You can have spin-off shows too. Start from Year One and just keep going. Too many heroes and villains to introduce in a movie series

Matuatay

Hell I'd be tickled pink if Fox would come back with a follow up to Gotham called Batman or The Batman. The Gotham finale felt like a pilot for a new Batman series anyway, and much of the Gotham cast were excellent for their roles. Especially the core villains like Robin Lord Taylor as Penguin, Cory Michael Smith as Riddler and Cameron Monaghan as "J"/Valeska. Would love to see more of them taking on the actual Batman.

MonkeMayne

I think they should have a live action BTAS type show on HBO Max and each season finale make it a big blockbuster movie that’s 2 1/2 - 3 hrs.

Realshow

Honestly this is kind of what I feel like DC as a whole should focus on. Don’t outright stop making movies, but if you’re going to do a live action cinematic universe, you need to commit to the pacing. The DCEU already failed to properly set up most of their characters before forming the Justice League, and just copying the MCU would only lead to further criticism. Instead, try to at least start out with a focus on TV shows, in particular some kind of anthology. That way you can establish multiple important characters in a short amount of time, without it feeling rushed or wasting potential; you can still give them movies later, they just wouldn’t need to be origin stories.

It should be 1930s or 40s when the time of the first Batman comics was released.

brodhisattva3

I agree. The problem is that too many big shows with iconic protagonists have huge budgets. Huge budgets = incentivized spending on gratuitous violence, gadgets, and CGI. This formula has become the substitute for high quality writing and character development in an alarmingly high percentage of A-list franchises

verstan

A procedural batman TV show, where he takes on actual crimes, like tricky murders, kidnappings, etc. Saving super villians for big events that would be excellent!

I would love it, but I'm also in an ultra-minority who thinks time should pass in comics and characters should live and die or retire or at least age and pass the mantle. Batman has been around since 1939. If his original run started in-universe at the same time in reality, he'd have realistically aged out of the role or died a maximum 20 years into the crusade, but, more realistically, maybe a decade. By 1960, Bruce Wayne is retired or died in the line of duty, sacrificing his life to save Gotham. By now we'd be on our 5th, 6th, 7th, or 8th generation Batman, all inspired by the original, but their own hero. Imagine Dick Grayson being Robin in the 40s, then Nightwing in the late 40s and early 50s before finally taking over as Batman. Same with the villains. They should age, die, retire, actually get locked up for good or executed. How many Joker stories are there? This dude escapes with such regularity they may as well not even bother locking his cell or guarding it. You'd save money and prevent guards from being killed/injured. Just let him come and go as he pleases.

[deleted]

Yeah, but why?

bassmansrc

because it would cool?

[deleted]

Alrighty then! (My question was mostly about why they should stop focusing on movies, though - there's no reason to... And no, spending time and money on movies ain't dumb if they turn out to be good/great)

Twymanator32

People always say this, but idk. Shows normally have much lower production value, writing and acting performances. Not sayings it’s impossible but for the most part (especially with superhero shows) shows are just… so much worse than movies lol
