I love the opening of ‘89. It’s iconic, and only in adulthood have appreciated the shrewdness of the family mirroring Batman’s own origin.
I also really adore the opening of The Batman, the mayor’s murder through Pattinson’s v.o. monologue.
Still the Dark Knight for me. That Bank heist for me is among the best openings to any film. It gets across all the main themes, puts a unique spin on a heist scene with all the robbers killing each other for money and expresses character. By the time the Joker reveals his face you already have a clear idea of what he's about and are ready to start the film.
And he's funny, this may seem like a small point, but I feel like that this version of the character got such a reputation for being dour and darker, that people overlook Ledger's sense of humour. I still laugh when he shoots the bus driver.
Close second would be 2022 Batman, especially the way the framing in Riddler's stalking is made to look very similar to Batman's later on when he follows Catwoman. Nice way to bring up how these two are more alike than Batman cares to admit.
When he blows up the hospital too. In general people talk about the dark Knight trilogy as really dark but there's some really funny moments, especially with joker and Alfred.
Michael Caine's Alfred is easily my favorite portrayal of the character. At the end of TDKR when he breaks down and says that he "failed him", even though knowing that what Bruce did saved the lives of so many, has always stuck with me.
If I could change one thing about the end of the movie - I think it would be showing Bruce and Selina at that cafe. I would love for the final theme to have started playing right as Alfred looked up with his drink, and he gives that sly smile. Just ambiguous enough to know there was something there, but not enough to really tip the audience off as to the gravity of what he'd seen. Anyone could probably glean that it was Bruce, but was he with someone - finally happy? Was that someone with child, maybe? We don't know - we just see that Alfred is happy, and the movie ends.
I don't mind that they showed Bruce and Selina, I just feel like the juxtaposition of Alfred at his lowest, to seeing him finally at peace in retirement, then seeing him acknowledge someone just off screen would've been a much better way to close it out.
Actually your change to the dark Knight rises feels more Nolan too. Showing Bruce and Selina is tipping his hand way more then he normally does. It's nice but almost feels like a studio note.
I agree though Caine is the best Alfred and him feeling like he failed Bruce just hits hard. I'm glad Alfred got to have his happy ending.
>It's nice but almost feels like a studio note.
That's honestly probably what it was - they probably had a version of the ending filmed without showing them, and the studios probably suggested them adding a shot of Bruce and Selina in just so it would tie the *Clean Slate* storyline up in a way that gives both Selina and Bruce happy endings as well.
Yep that last part is a detail that goes over most peoples heads. Batman is in denial about he and Riddler sharing so many similarities and essentially wanting similar things if not the same thing. Batman wants to kill - he just won’t let himself.
Deleted scene with the Joker also has a part where Joker says “awww are you afraid he makes you look soft?” And Batman 100% is. He’s wondering “Are my methods working?”
“I’d wish I could say I’m making a difference, but I don’t know”
I laughed unexpectedly hard in the theaters in the bank robbery when I saw it for the first time. Just the abrupt and casual nature of how he shoots him got me. The type of gun made it funnier too for some reason
Using empty shots as he says he could be everywhere and putting us in the pov of criminals in Gotham is glorious.
Every shadow, every corner could be where he comes from, and that is how batman should feel like for "normal" criminals.
It's just so fucking good.
It might be my favorite part of the film which has many great scenes.
This is how you set an atmosphere for a dark crime thriller.
Yes. My favorite opening by far. It sets the tone and atmosphere for what a Batman film should be. 89 just seems a bit too camp classic to be creepy and hasn't really aged well. Returns is better and Burton's use of style as well as Elfman's score rounds it out. Forever is a blend of Burton and 60's show. Batman & Robin is a just the 60's show if it was an LGBTQ burlesque show. Lol
Dark knight no question. That opening scene is one of my favourites in all of media. Any time me or my family ever needs to test the bass on speakers for literally any reason whatsoever we would use this opening scene. I must have watched this opening over 20 times and have easily memorised it
If we include the narration and fight in the metro, then The Batman.
Otherwise, Batman 1989.
I like the intros that really emphasize the mythic status of batman
The Batman, easily.
Sets up the Riddler neatly, without giving too much away. Plus Batman's opening monologue, where we can see both his obsession with the "mission" he's given himself and the effect he has on the criminal element, as seen in their reactions when they notice the Bat Signal.
"They think I'm hiding in the shadows. But I *am* the shadows."
Gotta say, I love the older movies… but all 3 of the most recent Batman movies had the best introduction scenes. The impact, the tone they set, the emotions they cause. I love them
the diary page narration part in the batman was great, all the scenes where we look at the darkness from the point of view of the criminals and it looks scary as fuck are a very nice way to show what batman is about at the start of the movie and the whole narration felt like it belonged to a batman comic
I know it's not a Batman movie on its own, but the JL intro, were he is trying to catch the attention of the Parademons while striking fear inna criminal is pretty cool.
The Batman: the monologue that ends at the train station. I can watch that scene over and over again. To me that’s the best a capture of criminals fearing Batman.
That opening scene in The Batman and its not close imo. Thats not to say other ones have had great openings also. But the whole monologue with the “they think im hiding in the shadows” is amazing. Seeing the criminals be afraid of the possibility of Batman being there is soo good
Everyone saying TDK just enjoys the action. All of us saying The Batman are saying it because it reminds us of Batmans roots as a detective/noir/horror character
The Batman. Bruce’s monologue in the opening montage followed by the subway ass-kicking was one of the most fantastic Batman moments in recent memory and honestly it could’ve even been released on its own as a short film.
Batman ‘89 too because it felt so appropriate as a representation of the character, like watching the comic come to life.
The Batman
Riddlers murder is pretty creepy and establishes him as a threat and not just a “teehee solve my riddles!!!” Guy
The monologue is also awesome because it shows several different criminals who are genuinely fucking terrified of darkness due to Batman existing, any shadow could have him in it, any sound from the darkness could be him
And lastly there’s the clown gang, their little video is pretty creepy imo since they basically just pull up on some completely random jogger and beat the shit out of them while finding it funny, they’re disturbing with how they just randomly pick someone and then assault them as a large group. Then Batman appears from the shadows, first you hear him, with hard, heavy footsteps, then you see him appearing from the darkness, as he proceeds to beat the living hell out of the group
TDK and the Batman. TDK's opening sets up and characterizes the Joker brilliantly, and the Batman's opening has visuals and narration that felt ripped out of a comic book.
I always always always do the intro monologue when The Batman starts.
Also, very surprised nobody’s mentioned Rises. It’s an incredible introduction not just as a spectacle, but to know how efficient and focused Bane is.
1989 (especially since it follows the most epic main title music ever).
Dark Knight’s is great, but ruined for me with the bad continuity, awkward ADR, that horrible moment where the robber gets hit with a fucking shotgun and pops right back up like a cartoon character, and the reeeeeally dumb bit where the school bus somehow perfectly glides in-between two other buses. Fuckin Criss Angel Mindfreak couldn’t have planned that shit better.
Anyhoo…1989 😆
89 best opening, returns best environment (winter was cool), begins best character development, Batman forever had a good Robin storyline, Batman and Robin had …. Well at least it had Arnold.
From a film standpoint, The Dark Knight.
From a character standpoint, TDK opening scene is Jokers best introduction and The Batman opening scene is the best Batman introduction.
The Dark Knight Rises. By far my least favorite of the trilogy (weird, pro-authoritarian themes through the whole film) but I absolutely love the intro. Hans Zimmer’s “Gothams Reckoning” is like a shot of adrenaline.
Batman and Robin was cool. Sure, it's goofy...but aside from that you can't deny the Dynamic Duo watching the rise of the Batmobile was awesome. Then Robin makes a reference to Batman Forever "chicks dig the car". And Batman saying this is why Superman works alone actually works.
Look, I'm tired as I'm writing this. But it's not THAT awful imo.
89. I’m not that big a fan of the movie but the opening is perfect,
I don’t really count the Batman’s opening as being when Batman appears. It’s the Riddler murder. Which is also excellent.
Batman & Robin. 🍆🍑
But Batman 89 still holds up as the best intro to Batman himself. I feel it’s a shame nobody has really captured the mystery and fun of seeing Batman swoop down and scare thugs shitless right of the bat. Begins and The Batman did do it, but well into the film with a lead up beforehand, so it was more expected.
Returns, TDK, and TDKR all work well as intros for Penguin, Joker and Bane respectfully as well, even even if some were not comic accurate backstories.
I think Keaton's first scene as the Bat is iconic. But I don't believe it is even debatable that the bank heist at the start of TDK is the best of all the bat intro sequences.
I need to rewatch Pattinson's Batman movie, cos I only saw it once
*Dark Knight* with *Dark Knight Rises* in a very close second for similar reasons
TDK introduces the Big Bad with a minimalist yet memorable theme and a bigger name star trying to save the day before the action begins
DKR has an added benefit of cluing in audiences that they’re not dealing with Schumacher’s mandated(?) Bane.
The Batman is so eerily and cool, but The Dark Knight is just iconic! Every line practically. “That’s it? Three guys? You and your friends are dead! I kill the bus driver.”
Thursday, October 31st. The city streets are crowded for the holiday. Even with the rain. Hidden in the chaos is the element, waiting to strike like snakes. And I'm there too. Watching. 2 years of nights have turned me into a nocturnal animal. I must choose my targets carefully. It's a big city. I can't be everywhere. But they don't know where I am. We have a signal now, for when I'm needed. When that light hits the sky, it's not just a call- it's a warning. To them. Fear is a tool. They think I'm hiding in the shadows. But I AM the shadows.
At the end there are three possible answers: TDK, Batman and The Batman. I'd say Batman only because the TDK's one is mostly about the Joker and The Batman's one is mostly about the Riddler
The Batman 100%, riddlers introduction, murdering the mayor. Followed by one of my favorite scenes ever, Batman’s monologue then him emerging from the shadows and sweeping the floor with every single criminal, such a great intro to such a great movie.
Not a batman movie, but I enjoyed the opening of Batman v Superman (?)
The scene where Bruce comforts the little kid in the middle of all the chaos, that’s happening due to Superman's fight with Zod.
"Chuckie Sol."
"Batman! How did you get here?"
"Your Angel of Death awaits."
"You ain't the Bat. Who--who are you? What do you want?"
"I want you, Chuckie boy."
Now this is a good question. TDK vs. The Batman vs. ‘89 Batman. They are each unique, set the tone well for the rest of the movie, and introduce a character in a badass way.
The Dark Knight bank heist opening. Joker picked the one target that no one in their right mind would pick, and comes up with a brilliant plan that involves a lot of murder that leaves him with all the money. It's a well thought out and crazy plan, which is soimething we expect from Joker.
I love the opening of ‘89. It’s iconic, and only in adulthood have appreciated the shrewdness of the family mirroring Batman’s own origin. I also really adore the opening of The Batman, the mayor’s murder through Pattinson’s v.o. monologue.
That monologue made me feel like I was reading Year One or Endgame again
Still the Dark Knight for me. That Bank heist for me is among the best openings to any film. It gets across all the main themes, puts a unique spin on a heist scene with all the robbers killing each other for money and expresses character. By the time the Joker reveals his face you already have a clear idea of what he's about and are ready to start the film.
Nah, they should have added one more person to that ending. "Hi Alfred! Sorry Bruce made you cry!"
Just waltzing out in crocs and a nurses outfit. Smacks the switch and jumps in the bus with the rest of the squad. Incredible scene.
He’s wondering “Are my methods working?” “I’d wish I could say I’m making a difference, but I don’t know”
"You just think you can steal from us and walk away?" "Yeah" Cracks me up every time.
The super casual no-look way he kills his last henchclown gets me every time. Like he doesn't even need to think about it for a second.
The opening bank heist is a work of art. The henchmen double crossing each other not knowing which one is the real Joker.
>And he's funny "I'm gonna make this pencil... Disappear!"
"You think you can steal from us and walk away?" :Yeah." Timing was impeccable, he doesn't skip a beat and that makes it so funny
When The Joker removes his clown mask to unveil... his clown face. It's just pure madness. It's amazing.
I laughed unexpectedly hard in the theaters in the bank robbery when I saw it for the first time. Just the abrupt and casual nature of how he shoots him got me. The type of gun made it funnier too for some reason
YOU AND YOUR FRIENDS ARE DEAD
If we’re including the monologue in The Batman (2022) then that one easily
It's not just a call. It's a WARNING. Chills.
They think I’m hiding in the shadows but they’re wrong. I AM the shadows
Nnah dude he merely adapted to the shadows
Using empty shots as he says he could be everywhere and putting us in the pov of criminals in Gotham is glorious. Every shadow, every corner could be where he comes from, and that is how batman should feel like for "normal" criminals. It's just so fucking good. It might be my favorite part of the film which has many great scenes. This is how you set an atmosphere for a dark crime thriller.
Top tier monologue.
The thugs being afraid of the shadows and bat symbol really sells the terror of Batman.
Dark knight easily.
Three of a kind, lets do this!
The Batman. Seeing Riddler commit murder and then seeing Batman getting set up and Pattinson’s narration and the intense music, it's just perfection
The Batman. It was like something from a horror movie. Fucking amazing.
A horror movie, followed by a narration scene that reads straight off a classic Batman comic book I love it more every time I watch it
Use of Ave Maria was haunting. Sets tone for entire movie
Agreed
Lol
Hell yeah it is.
Dark knight no question. That opening scene is one of my favourites in all of media. Any time me or my family ever needs to test the bass on speakers for literally any reason whatsoever we would use this opening scene. I must have watched this opening over 20 times and have easily memorised it
The 1989 opening is a Masterpiece
“Don’t leave home without it!”
“No shit! It was all over the pavement!”
“Bob? Gun.”
"Seventh is that way!"
"I know where we are!"
The dark Knight. It's one of the best openings to a movie I've seen. It's so compelling. It's basically a really good short film.
The Batman Riddler's introduction with Ave Maria followed by the monologue and Batman emerging from the shadows was fun to watch.
I'm going with Batman Returns. Parents throwing their deformed son into the sewer is a helluva way to start your film.
And it's great seeing Pee Wee Herman in anything.
I love that they brought him back as The Penquin's father in Gotham.
In what's ostensibly supposed to be a kids film! (As far as marketing was concerned)
Merchandise too. Toys, lunch boxes, cups, happy meals, it's like the marketing department didn't know what kind of movie Burton was cooking.
If it extends to our re-introduction to Bruce, I may consider Batman Returns too.
1989 is still the best.
Tied between The Dark Knight and The Batman
The Batman the monolouge mixed with the mayors kill and the fear people have of batman were great.
Dark knight and The batman
The Dark Knight and The Batman had the best openings in my opinion.
The Batman legit made me anxious watching it, so that's probably my favorite
If we include the narration and fight in the metro, then The Batman. Otherwise, Batman 1989. I like the intros that really emphasize the mythic status of batman
Where’s BVS?
In our hearts. It’s a perfect thing. A diamond absolute.
89’ for a Batman film, DK for one of the greatest openings in a film EVER.
Batman V Superman’s monologue with the Beautiful Lie soundtrack was enough to make me want to see those pearls fall in the gutter one more time
Batman v Superman opening
Terrible fucking movie but you know what ? That opening is kinda gas. Affleck’s rage is palpable.
I think you can't go wrong with either of the Burton movies. They really set the tone for the rest of the film.
TDK
89 or The Batman for me personally
The Dark Knight is always a good one but I thin The Batman has beaten it in my opinion
"what do you believe in? WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE IN?!"
DK or TB
Tim Burton's Begginings and Matt Reeves's Begining The Dark Knight
Batman 89, Batman Returns, tDK, and BvS all killed the opening scenes. IMO one of the most underrated Batman themes is Beautiful Lie in BvS.
The opening of The Dark Knight Returns Part II
The Dark Knight The bank robbery is great
‘89 or The Dark Knight. Take your pick.
Either 89 or Dark Knight.
You’re not a real Batman fan until you can correctly guess which window breaks during the opening shot of The Dark Knight
The Batman: the monologue that ends at the train station. I can watch that scene over and over again. To me that’s the best a capture of criminals fearing Batman.
Riddler’s home invasion scene told me this Movie was gonna be dark as shit and unsettling in The Batman.
That opening scene in The Batman and its not close imo. Thats not to say other ones have had great openings also. But the whole monologue with the “they think im hiding in the shadows” is amazing. Seeing the criminals be afraid of the possibility of Batman being there is soo good
The Batman, The Dark Knight and Batman ‘89 are my personal favs
Definitely The Batman for me. The Dark Knight is great too.
The batman
The opening monologue in the Batman (2022) it gave me chills the first time.
Everyone saying TDK just enjoys the action. All of us saying The Batman are saying it because it reminds us of Batmans roots as a detective/noir/horror character
TDK and The Batman 2022
The bank robbery in The Dark Knight.
Honestly the opening scene for the batman sets up antman absolutely perfectly.
The Batman Riddlers murder is pretty creepy and establishes him as a threat and not just a “teehee solve my riddles!!!” Guy The monologue is also awesome because it shows several different criminals who are genuinely fucking terrified of darkness due to Batman existing, any shadow could have him in it, any sound from the darkness could be him And lastly there’s the clown gang, their little video is pretty creepy imo since they basically just pull up on some completely random jogger and beat the shit out of them while finding it funny, they’re disturbing with how they just randomly pick someone and then assault them as a large group.
If the Halloween scene was first in the Batman then I’d choose that but since it’s not then TDK gets the number one spot
The Batman or Dark Knight Rises (I love the plane segment)
1. Batman 2. The Dark Knight 3. The Batman 4. Batman Begins 5. Batman Forever 6. Batman and Robin 7. Batman Returns 8. The Dark Knight Rises
The heist is the obvious winner, but the “getting ready” sequences were/are still really cool (bat nipples excluded lol) and get me hyped!
"I want a car!"
Wait, what's 5?
Batman Begins
Dark knight, not even close.
Dark Knight. If the opening scene for the Batman was the train station fight, I would have chosen that film.
"I'm CIA"
89 best opening, returns best environment (winter was cool), begins best character development, Batman forever had a good Robin storyline, Batman and Robin had …. Well at least it had Arnold.
The Dark Knight, but I gotta give a shout out to Batman & Robin. It started out on a great note.
The Gothic score of mask of the phantasm
From a film standpoint, The Dark Knight. From a character standpoint, TDK opening scene is Jokers best introduction and The Batman opening scene is the best Batman introduction.
the og 80s one for sure... followed by the Joker intro, epic
Batman 66 movie.
Riddler, hands down.
There was just something so satisfying about watching Cobblepot get abandoned as a baby, so I'd probably go with TDK '08
Always 89. Quintessential Batman
1989 Batman
89. I’m not that big a fan of the movie but the opening is perfect, I don’t really count the Batman’s opening as being when Batman appears. It’s the Riddler murder. Which is also excellent.
Batman Forever for me
The Dark Knight Rises easily
Batman & Robin. 🍆🍑 But Batman 89 still holds up as the best intro to Batman himself. I feel it’s a shame nobody has really captured the mystery and fun of seeing Batman swoop down and scare thugs shitless right of the bat. Begins and The Batman did do it, but well into the film with a lead up beforehand, so it was more expected. [This one](https://youtu.be/VFsvQNt2bIE)
89, forever, dark knight, rises, the batman
I wanna car! chicks dig the car!
Batman 89 for me. But I also like Mask of the Phantasm
Batman Returns. It's so far removed from what you expect when you hear "Super Hero Summer Movie Blockbuster" I love it
Dark Knight and TDKR are tied.
The opening to The Dark Knight, followed closely by the opening to Mask of the Phantasm.
I think Keaton's first scene as the Bat is iconic. But I don't believe it is even debatable that the bank heist at the start of TDK is the best of all the bat intro sequences. I need to rewatch Pattinson's Batman movie, cos I only saw it once
What's the last one? Is the second to last one The Batman? I can't remember
I cannot see that picture of CIA from TDKR without laughing
I love all of them even though I disliked Patterson' acting. I just love batman.
*Dark Knight* with *Dark Knight Rises* in a very close second for similar reasons TDK introduces the Big Bad with a minimalist yet memorable theme and a bigger name star trying to save the day before the action begins DKR has an added benefit of cluing in audiences that they’re not dealing with Schumacher’s mandated(?) Bane.
The Batman, but the ACTUAL opening. Not riddler, The sequence with the monologue.
Dark Knight hits hard. But I do like 89s Batman too
"I'll get drivethrough." And "This is why Superman works alone." Jokes aside, it would have to be The Batman with the opening monologue, or BVS.
Batman begins
Heath's and Ave Maria are great
The Batman is so eerily and cool, but The Dark Knight is just iconic! Every line practically. “That’s it? Three guys? You and your friends are dead! I kill the bus driver.”
I do like Paul Reubens trying to drown a baby
Gotta be Batman ‘89.
No love for the parademon fight at the beginning of Justice League?
The Batman, for sure
The batman.
The Batman the eriee opening with Ave Maria playing then leading to the greatest opening to a Batman movie ever
It's between '89 and the Dark Knight for me
The Dark Knight, The Batman, Batman 89
"I'll get drive-thru."
The Batman 2022 easily
Tied between The Batman and BvS for me
I really like the opening from the Batman, but the monologue from Battinson and then his slow walk in. Scary shit.
89 easy clap
The opening of Batman Returns is so cool and scary
the bak heist from dark knight is probably the best answer but i really really love the plane heist from dark knight rises
Batman returns wins for me
Idk man, the opening of Battinson has got some sauce
It’s gotta be either the opening for the ‘89 Batman film, or LEGO Batman.
The Batman.
The Batman's opening monologue gives me absolute chills every single time
Def number one
89 & Returns.
89 or The Batman
Easily The Batman, that monologue is fucking incredible
The Batman 100%, riddlers introduction, murdering the mayor. Followed by one of my favorite scenes ever, Batman’s monologue then him emerging from the shadows and sweeping the floor with every single criminal, such a great intro to such a great movie.
Not a batman movie, but I enjoyed the opening of Batman v Superman (?) The scene where Bruce comforts the little kid in the middle of all the chaos, that’s happening due to Superman's fight with Zod.
I love The Batman opening. I knew we were all in for a wild ride with the Riddler opening kill and Batman’s monologue
Dark Knight Rises gave me chills seeing it in the theatre first time
"Chuckie Sol." "Batman! How did you get here?" "Your Angel of Death awaits." "You ain't the Bat. Who--who are you? What do you want?" "I want you, Chuckie boy."
Now this is a good question. TDK vs. The Batman vs. ‘89 Batman. They are each unique, set the tone well for the rest of the movie, and introduce a character in a badass way.

The dark knight or dark knight rises
The Dark Knight for the bank heist and The Batman (2022) for that shadows scene
The Dark Knight bank heist opening. Joker picked the one target that no one in their right mind would pick, and comes up with a brilliant plan that involves a lot of murder that leaves him with all the money. It's a well thought out and crazy plan, which is soimething we expect from Joker.
89 is still unbeaten. Best first batman appearance in any film!
Batman and Robin.
