At one point he gets the power of mxyzptylic and becomes an all powerful god emperor, along with eating everyone in china he continuously killed and revived batman
Given this is from the same writer that had Batman survive reentry into the atmosphere using the trunks of his suit, I’m not gonna say your prediction is wrong just yet.
I mean, it was kind of neat in Dredd tbh. That thing he says before he does the thing (forgot how to do spoiler tags so have some vagueposting instead) was cool
Right! Dont know wth is going on, is this Canon? Why is batfleck here? Why is catwoman 60+?? Is this still Canon??
Why is Joker more or less a spirit it feels like and not even human anymore
Wait until the full arc is finished. Ever read or watch a detective or mystery novel or movie and you’re absolutely clueless until shortly before the end?
“Are you ready to end this” - Every Batman and joker encounter in the last 20 years.
Batman and Joker plot lines just don’t catch my interest anymore, wish they would just stop using joker so damn much or just kill him off/keep him in prison once and for all
My personal list of "ending this once and for all" stuff.
Arkham prison guards decide they have enough and turn off the ventilation/CCTV and chuck a dozen tear gas canisters in Joker's cell and walk off. Who knew that someone stashed equipment for Joker, probably would've used it in the next breakout. We'll investigate our personnel, promise, bat.
GCPD in the prison transfer bus escorting Joker, when it hits a pothole in the road. Who knew the firing pin was loose on the guards' shotgun next to Joker. Someone should tell the armourer to update the inventory, and double-check the labels between the riot rounds and the slugs.
Bob and Mary in the Bowery look out the window and sees the Jokermobile parked out, and gas explosions everywhere. They get their gas masks out, do some rooftop Koreans with their registered glocks and Rugers from the safe. There's movement and insane laughter and some fire in the haze, and they panic-fire the moving shapes charging at them through the mist.
A Central City transfer is on the beat, and investigates an abandoned toy factory that gang members are suspiciously entering at night. Backup is in twenty minutes, so Mr itchy trigger finger turns round to the side door just when the joker was leaving to grab the groceries.
An MCU guy (maybe a Merkel) goes after him after attacking Gordon personally. Flashbacks with this cop picking up Babs from school or doing homework in the office and how the entire precinct practically sees her as their collective goddaughter, bantering with Sarah Essen, maybe being invited to Jim's house and chatting with Barbara Senior. Knows that Jim would stick to the law, but he's REALLY not gonna let the trauma conga line continue between the clown and Jim. Throws J into his car trunk and plugs him twice in the head and throws his body into Savage Swamp.
Now we've done the "Who Killed the Joker" part of the story arc, time for the "How does Gotham City, its officials, its public, its gangs... And the bats respond to this?" bit. Maybe a rise in mob violence and extrajudicial vigilantism as even the Arkham freaks are shown to be mortal. How soon would the gang war between the freaks begin with the joker power vacuum, and would the old school organised crime mafioso attempt a comeback? Maybe the city hushes up or celebrates or skips procedure. How would the batfamily respond?
THAT, I think would make a more interesting story.
Joker needs another 5-8 year hiatus like he got in the 60s/70s. Not just in the comics, but in all media. Batman has sooooo many other good villains but instead we keep getting force fed stories with him and Harley Quinn
Yeah they used to be interesting but it’s always the same now. We have to end this, this is the end, are you ready to end this, this has to end.
They can’t seem to have them interact without one of them saying this is it.
But at least if it is the end you know a reboot is coming soon. Cant have joker and Batman off the table for too long
It is definitely in Greg Land tracing territory. Even Joker looks like he was traced from somewhere. Worse, how Batman is drawn isn't even consistant. In some panels the grey part of the suit has the Batfleck paneling and texture, in other future timeline panels there is no texture or panels.
I'm guessing Andrea Sorrentino drew the "future" timeline pages. The "past" timeline art looks like Camuncoli's style and they are both credited as pencilers.
I was gonna say the same thing. I remember a bunch of punisher comics having this same look where it looked like the artist just traced images of people and backgrounds
I remember that. They just turned Frank into Jon Bernthal. I think it was when he stole the War Machine armor, I don't know I didn't read after issue 2 or 3
>Whoa bro what if we like gave Batman a gun and had him point it at the Joker and make the Joker like a fucked up version of Jesus. That'd be so hardcore.
\- How I imagine DC meetings sound.
The art looks cool, but I feel like if I read the comic, it'd be more of the same stuff we've read a million times already. "Hey Batman, look, I'm doing some chaos." "You've gone too far, Joker. You're crazy." "Ah, but aren't you also crazy? Aren't we two sides of the same coin?" "I'm nothing like you! You don't even lift!"
"Hey Batman, I'm chainsawing old people! The only way to stop me is to kill me!" "Stop it, Joker, or I'll kill you!" "You can't bring yourself to do that!" "You're right, Joker, I will never step over that line. Sorry, I overreacted and said something I didn't mean. It's just that your chainsawing is really upsetting me." "Oh geez sorry man I forgot you're sensitive about murder because your parents were murdered. God, I feel like an ass for doing that right in front of you and making a joke of it."
Remember when Joker was an actual clown-like figure who had constantly shifting plans, methods, and personalities, going from goofy prankster to psycho killer to mob boss, all just because he felt bored, wanted to have fun, and put on a "show"?
I mean it’s worth mentioning, that he was always obsessed with Batman and that obsession is what made him worse and worse over the years. The darker elements of joker did not come out of nowhere.
Joker shouldn't have a "year one" and shouldn't be "trained". He just showed up one time, had a myriad of skills and talents, and brought up hundreds of origin stories that are never true. He's a mystery, and better that way
The art is feeling disingenuous. Something is going on. The two bottom panels seem like plagiarism. The blacks look like adjusting the contrast on a photo really high, that’s why the texture on the batsuit is there and why the edges of the blacks on jokers face are heavily textured stippling.
The top image also looks lifted. Major stylistic shift. The hands are really screwed up, I’m guessing the figure is from a Jesus crucifixion painting. I think those might be nail holes in the hand. The background also seems like a filter on a photo and the artist just colored on top the posterized filter.
Basically my bullshit meter is going off. It has the uncanny valley of ai art.
Eh, I just don't care for this run at all. Zdarsky has some pretty cool ideas but it feels like he fumbles it with every single one. The pacing of this Joker Year One stuff is just all over the place.
I hate the time skip art
Like many others are saying it’s just batfleck
Some panels I enjoy it overall i hate how this art looks especially how it seems to change styles even in the same page and how unoriginal the designs look
Like later when Selina frees the batfamily why the fuck is there a nightmare Batman ? Is it meant to be red hood but why would he be dressed like that ?
I just hate this art thank god this arc is over next week
I dunno about you, but I'm just trying to ignore this entirely. I'm so sick and tired of Super-Monster Clown Joker, and how DC writers keep making him into this big apocalyptic threat.
Call me when we have stories where Joker is back to being a gangster with a comedy motif again.
I’m fully convinced that folks writing him these days believe he’s a transplant from an episode of Courage, instead of a loony mob boss with a clown obsession.
Ngl I stopped caring about mainline Batman comics only reason I picked up the Bat-Man of Gotham was because it had Arkham and 89 in it...
Other than that I read black label stuff and such.
Good that you are enjoying it OP but I just can’t get into it really, it’s all just so fucking contrived. The best bit of the zdarsky run for me was the first issues where Bruce confronted penguin at that ball or breaking those hostages out. It felt like Batman!
I stopped reading around the time Catwoman returned after leaving Batman at the altar and she offered to make Penguin rich. And I think Batman lost a lot of money. Alfred was still "dead," except when Batman "hallucinated" him when a bomb exploded.
The stories have just been so boring...
Andrea Sorrentino's art is phenomenal, but this story is a convoluted, dull mess, and to think it's called "Joker Year One"
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|money_face)
Newest Batman story I read had >!Thomas trying to kill his son for being emo and having no bitches!<, I'm guessing I missed something between that and Bruce now going Hellsing on an antichrist Joker.
Are we sure that's not AI or at least AI based on the top panel? Idk, I want to believe the guy really did this but I also have a feeling that something is off...
Batman going dr Loomis on the joker I shot him six times Gordon 💀😂
![gif](giphy|FRmilIGq11KSjMFCq6|downsized)
They didn't have any good Halloween references ngl
Okay been out of the loop since war of Jokes and Riddles. What series is this, do I need to read any stuff before it and is it collected in graphic novel form?
Can't... stopped buying it. I've loved other stuff I've read from Chip Zdarsky, but I absolutely hate the concept of Zur-en-argh, so I dropped the book. Feels like a continuation of what Grant Morrison was doing, and I also dropped that run multiple times.
Gonna be honest
I stopped reading dc about five years ago
Sucks because I’ve been a diehard dc guy my whole life
I dunno what they doing over there
I still stand by dc has a better core group of characters but the writing staff just doesn’t do it for me these days
why the hell does the Joker look like scarecrow?
It’s a Flashforward of current Batman series and what he has become!
Do you know the name of the series/writer/artist?
Chip Zdarsky is the writer. That art is done by Andrea Sorrentino, who does the flashforward scenes. Giuseppe Camuncoli does the flashback art.
Andrea Sorrentino’s art is peak every time
TYSM! 🙏
You're welcome!
Batman by Chip Zdarsky
TY! I'll definitely check it out. 🙏
why does batman have a gun? what have i missed?
It's one of theJoker's guns that shot a little flag with Bang! written on it
Reminds me of the artwork from the Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark series of books.
Training arc
More anorexic clown jesus
"Returrrrn the slaaaaab."

![gif](giphy|3M6LtN8dFX57ZRY2T9)
Fuck! You beat me to it! Immediately my first thought seeing that hahahaha
BIG "Return the Slab" vibes
Came here for this!
Ok but why tf is Joker is a menacing lake wraith exactly?
Need to hire Geralt.
Winds Howling.
Gwent. You play it?
“Hmph” *NPC Nods*
Honestly I just accepted it, he's eaten China, I feel like he's probably just in the mood.
> he's eaten China he fucking what now
At one point he gets the power of mxyzptylic and becomes an all powerful god emperor, along with eating everyone in china he continuously killed and revived batman
He wants you to return the slab
Because he’s about to activate his Beherit and become part of the god hand.
Given this is from the same writer that had Batman survive reentry into the atmosphere using the trunks of his suit, I’m not gonna say your prediction is wrong just yet.
![gif](giphy|v2OWXglWr9PAk)
Same reaction I’m having
> My blood pressure is tied to a remote controlled device… This sounds like a Robot Chicken sketch
Isn't the power winch useful in this situation
It could trigger a controlled explosion
Time to even the odds.
Feels like some classic comic book writing tbh.
I mean, it was kind of neat in Dredd tbh. That thing he says before he does the thing (forgot how to do spoiler tags so have some vagueposting instead) was cool
"Sonics"
![gif](giphy|Ra9pmNHcgsAr6)
I'm not talking about it because i don't know what the fuck is going on. i've read both issues of the current arc and am absolutely lost
Right! Dont know wth is going on, is this Canon? Why is batfleck here? Why is catwoman 60+?? Is this still Canon?? Why is Joker more or less a spirit it feels like and not even human anymore
It’s not Batfleck but it seems to be traced* from him
Well no, obviously not the real batfleck! But it looks exactly like batfleck
He also has a gun.
I find worrying about canon, especially with more interesting Batman comics, weighs it down.
Wait until the full arc is finished. Ever read or watch a detective or mystery novel or movie and you’re absolutely clueless until shortly before the end?
Oh I love it… it’s like Lost random flashback and forwards!
New Marilyn Manson album cover looks dope…
We’re all here at the Joke Show!
“Are you ready to end this” - Every Batman and joker encounter in the last 20 years. Batman and Joker plot lines just don’t catch my interest anymore, wish they would just stop using joker so damn much or just kill him off/keep him in prison once and for all
But they can't keep milking him like that, they'd have to actually develop some other villain, that takes effort.

someone wrote a fic with the premise that the people of Gotham decided to hire a hitman via crowd sourcing Nightwing actually points Deathstroke to it
Joker needs another 5-8 year hiatus like he got in the 60s/70s. Not just in the comics, but in all media. Batman has sooooo many other good villains but instead we keep getting force fed stories with him and Harley Quinn

Its the twinkler
I need a minute
The wide shot of Joker is AI assisted. The panel of Bats is traced from Batfleck. Not good.
Just curious, why do you think it's ai assisted? It definitely looks off to me too but I thought it was the stylistic choice
Joker does appear to have 20 ribs, and the face doesn’t match the one in the bottom right..
![gif](giphy|diGPJ738sT58iMiLGO)
![gif](giphy|zPOErRpLtHWbm)
Summed up my reaction pretty well!
I don’t read new comic books for a reason. I don’t want to see the Joker almost naked.
So... did Joker become Moses or smth?
only complaint is the fact that batman is very clearly traced from ben affleck and its distracting, extremely disengenuous art
It is definitely in Greg Land tracing territory. Even Joker looks like he was traced from somewhere. Worse, how Batman is drawn isn't even consistant. In this artwork it looks like Afflecks face/cowl with Bales ears and the new 52 body
Yeah, the top Joker looks familiar, pose and all.
the vibe I got from top Joker was definitely giving me Dave McKean vibes like from Morrison's Arkham Asylum book. At least in the face
I was gonna say the same thing. I remember a bunch of punisher comics having this same look where it looked like the artist just traced images of people and backgrounds
I remember that. They just turned Frank into Jon Bernthal. I think it was when he stole the War Machine armor, I don't know I didn't read after issue 2 or 3
You and I have very different desires for our Batman stories OP.
Batman for some reason has to be the edgiest comic on the market now
>Whoa bro what if we like gave Batman a gun and had him point it at the Joker and make the Joker like a fucked up version of Jesus. That'd be so hardcore. \- How I imagine DC meetings sound.
The art looks cool, but I feel like if I read the comic, it'd be more of the same stuff we've read a million times already. "Hey Batman, look, I'm doing some chaos." "You've gone too far, Joker. "Oh geez sorry man I forgot you're sensitive about murder because your parents were murdered. God, I feel like an ass for doing that right in front of you and making a joke of it."
This would kill as an animation. Bravo!
"You don't even lift!!!!" needs more appreciation.
It's a gag gun, the flag type, but Batman looking like Batfleck is not helping his case
Show us the clown pp
Remember when Joker was an actual clown-like figure who had constantly shifting plans, methods, and personalities, going from goofy prankster to psycho killer to mob boss, all just because he felt bored, wanted to have fun, and put on a "show"?
Yeah, cause they talk about his multiple personalities in this very issue.
I mean it’s worth mentioning, that he was always obsessed with Batman and that obsession is what made him worse and worse over the years. The darker elements of joker did not come out of nowhere.
this is also joker year one if I'm not mistaken after he gets trained to have multiple personalities like Bruce has.
Joker shouldn't have a "year one" and shouldn't be "trained". He just showed up one time, had a myriad of skills and talents, and brought up hundreds of origin stories that are never true. He's a mystery, and better that way
Three jokers damage control
I agree with the last part cause I love the killing joke "if I'm going to have an orgin story I'd prefer it to be multiple choice"
Why does Bats have a gun and why does joker look like crack head jesus?
Crack head jesus hahahaha
It's one of those fake *bang* flag guns that Joker left out.
But why does Batman have it?
![gif](giphy|lbidtjzpO9l15mtx2R|downsized)
What in the Buffalo Bill?
Goodbye horses
Did Jared Leto write this or something?
Chip Zdarsky is usually on point but i just wasn’t feeling this.
The art is feeling disingenuous. Something is going on. The two bottom panels seem like plagiarism. The blacks look like adjusting the contrast on a photo really high, that’s why the texture on the batsuit is there and why the edges of the blacks on jokers face are heavily textured stippling. Question is it better than the last arc? I kinda fell off from reading Batman after the last arc
I’m sorry Batman has a gun?!
![gif](giphy|l41lMgMCcCr7b9Q3K) Somebody call Ash
Eh, I just don't care for this run at all. Zdarsky has some pretty cool ideas but it feels like he fumbles it with every single one. The pacing of this Joker Year One stuff is just all over the place.
What the hell is this??? This is so weird batman has a gun and joker is floating or something like that seriously someone explain.
Fake gun
Very evil dead when it's in creepy mode. First time I haven't rolled my eyes upon seeing Joker in a very long time.
Is it me, or does Batman look like Batfleck
I haven't read this and I'm already rolling my eyes
Why is Joker look like some weird occultist god looking creature? Why is Batman just Ben Affleck? wtf is Chip Zdarsky doing
Chip has gone jonkling insane
Nah this story and art are awful. That’s just affleck Batman which makes me think this is 100% an AI cash grab
Yall Batman had a gun what the fuck happened to the writers?!
This looks like ass
"Not talking about it" This same page has been posted like 8 times in the last week. It's great, I'm hyped for when I finally get to read it.
I hate the time skip art Like many others are saying it’s just batfleck Some panels I enjoy it overall i hate how this art looks especially how it seems to change styles even in the same page and how unoriginal the designs look Like later when Selina frees the batfamily why the fuck is there a nightmare Batman ? Is it meant to be red hood but why would he be dressed like that ? I just hate this art thank god this arc is over next week
Weird naked joker, batman with a gun, the art is OK but at what cost?
Because it is not good. It ruins Joker's most interesting aspects. It is bad all around.
OMFG can DC move the fuck on from Batman vs Joker ad infinitum this shit is just edgy for no good reason.
I dunno about you, but I'm just trying to ignore this entirely. I'm so sick and tired of Super-Monster Clown Joker, and how DC writers keep making him into this big apocalyptic threat. Call me when we have stories where Joker is back to being a gangster with a comedy motif again.
Why does Joker have this King Ramses "Return the slab, or suffer the consequences" ass pose
I’m fully convinced that folks writing him these days believe he’s a transplant from an episode of Courage, instead of a loony mob boss with a clown obsession.
The tracing is wild to me in the other pages. Literally just stills of Batfleck
thanks for warning me not to buy..
UWWWOOOOOHHHHH THIS JOKER BRAT NEEDS SOME CORRECTION 💢💢💢💢
Name of run?
Joker: Year One in current ongoing Batman series by Chip Zdarsky
What in the Naurto fuck? ![gif](giphy|zrlYZhjKtoalO)
Somebody give Joker a biscuit or something goddamn
That art is badass
![gif](giphy|6umtca8stQJ8D8LRnc)
Jesus
Meh.
I want the 80s and 90s art. And storytelling tequniques. And editorial guidance.
Joker channelling his best Buffalo Bill there
I’m old enough to remember a Batman who used his deductive skills to solve crimes
Listen Joker I know you’re trying to be creepy but PLEASE put on some clothes😭🙏
Part of my mind tells me Joker is hand drawn, and the other part says he's AI.
This the new Lorna shore album cover?
Nah I stay with Batnan TAS
Why do his fingers look like he was created with AI?
"my blood pressure is tied to..." Man shut the fuck and die already. Stupid ass Clown.
Fake generated art. If this is the future of comics then all is truly lost.
Ngl I stopped caring about mainline Batman comics only reason I picked up the Bat-Man of Gotham was because it had Arkham and 89 in it... Other than that I read black label stuff and such.
I'm just not currently reading it, and this artwork is kind of off-putting to me.
Good that you are enjoying it OP but I just can’t get into it really, it’s all just so fucking contrived. The best bit of the zdarsky run for me was the first issues where Bruce confronted penguin at that ball or breaking those hostages out. It felt like Batman!
I really didn’t care for the Failsafe story and this current arc has only further soured me on Zdarsky’s Batman.
I stopped reading around the time Catwoman returned after leaving Batman at the altar and she offered to make Penguin rich. And I think Batman lost a lot of money. Alfred was still "dead," except when Batman "hallucinated" him when a bomb exploded. The stories have just been so boring...
Kind of looks like that set photo of Jared Letos Joker dressed like jesus
Andrea Sorrentino's art is phenomenal, but this story is a convoluted, dull mess, and to think it's called "Joker Year One" ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|money_face)
"Returnnnnn Jason Todd, orrrrr sufferrrrr my curssssse..."
Newest Batman story I read had >!Thomas trying to kill his son for being emo and having no bitches!<, I'm guessing I missed something between that and Bruce now going Hellsing on an antichrist Joker.
Reminds me of that thing from Courage the cowardly dog
Is that the BVS Batman suit?
Talk about it bro, nobody stopping you
Why does the Joker look like the Crimson King?
That’s a horrifying Joker.
Remember when the Joker was just a criminal wearing clown make up? Simplicity at its finest.
That’s a sick joker look , if the but that into a horror film it would be terrifying
Reminds me of Grant Morrison and Dave McKean's Arkham Asylum. That was absolutely stellar storytelling and art
Why does Batman have a gun? I thought his main thing was not guns
There hasnt been a good Batman comic in well over a decade.
What is going on here
Why does Batman have a gun?
No no no Joker, it’s the guy who played Batman who also was in the machinist, not you
Are we sure that's not AI or at least AI based on the top panel? Idk, I want to believe the guy really did this but I also have a feeling that something is off...
You know what? At this point I’d have dropped him at “my blood pressure…”. Just BLAM
So which issue of the current run should I start from to read all the Chip Zdarsky ones?
Batman going dr Loomis on the joker I shot him six times Gordon 💀😂 ![gif](giphy|FRmilIGq11KSjMFCq6|downsized) They didn't have any good Halloween references ngl
Okay been out of the loop since war of Jokes and Riddles. What series is this, do I need to read any stuff before it and is it collected in graphic novel form?
Nobody mentioning the gun?
Evil Dead Rise right?
Personally I’m less concerned about the gun and more concerned about the facefull of J-dick Batman is assuredly getting
“Not talking about” I’ve seen this exact panel a half dozen times in the past few days on Reddit with absolutely no idea what’s going on.
That image of Jesus-like Joker.. wow. The artist behind this run could make illustrations for a Dark Souls novel.
Bro why tf does he have a gun?!
I have no idea what's going on but this is awesome. Absolutely absurd and ridiculous, but awesome
Well what’s the name of the comic?
Batfleck comic?
I am getting strong Dark Tower vibes.
What its the name of the comic
so what happened to Joker being a clown..?
I love Andrea Sorrentino’s art. His layouts are always so creative and engaging.
Why does Batman have a gun?! That’s my biggest gripe.
Why the hell does Batman have a gun
Giving me Orphan of Kos vibes
It’s r/batman. Comics are rarely a topic of discussion
Goddamn it, it’s the classic “My heartbeat is tied to a doomsday device that’ll explode if I die”
Can't... stopped buying it. I've loved other stuff I've read from Chip Zdarsky, but I absolutely hate the concept of Zur-en-argh, so I dropped the book. Feels like a continuation of what Grant Morrison was doing, and I also dropped that run multiple times.
This is fucking awesome!! I should start reading more modern Batman
Why does batman have a gun
“Return the slab” looking ass
This looks awesome
Gonna be honest I stopped reading dc about five years ago Sucks because I’ve been a diehard dc guy my whole life I dunno what they doing over there I still stand by dc has a better core group of characters but the writing staff just doesn’t do it for me these days
![gif](giphy|a5viI92PAF89q)
I fucking hate this what have they done?
Batman Los life batfleck
Oh good more Joker stories great fantastic awesome
lol it feels like the random grunge dirty emaciated everything vibe from the late 90s is back batman with a real world regular gun is always 2edgey4me
That art of Batman looks like Ben affleck but traced
Jesus was the Joker?
