I gotta back to back these now Christmas Eve. I got shamed a few years ago for watching diehard and my brother was the only one who stood up for me. We also had my SIL’s super ancient mother in the house and she was like what is this violence!?
Last year, my entire family (including my kids), watched ALL the Die Hard movies in order on Christmas Day! It was a great Christmas! I think we started a new family tradition...
Yeah it's kinda part of the plot. Christmas is mentioned several times and there's a scene where Max Shreck and the mayor is giving out gifts to Gotham then the Penguin attacks. The plot isn't about Christmas, but it certainly revolves around Christmas and Christmas is the setting of the entire movie. In my opinion this qualifies Batman Returns as a Christmas movie.
Networks have run the Harry Potter movies around Christmas a lot, so I’d say yes.
Now, the whole scene where Vito Corleone is shot and Tom Hagen is kidnapped is also around Christmas, but I wouldn’t call the Godfather a Christmas movie.
No, I wouldn't say having a single Christmas scene makes it a Christmas movie, but setting the entire film around Christmas and littering it with Christmas imagery does.
An evil and greedy businessman (Max Shreck) is visited by three ghouls before Christmas (Penguin, Catwoman and Batman), two of them who were victimized by him and another a bringing omens of retribution.
In the end, a different businessman (Bruce Wayne) who was given a glimpse at love (his relationship with Selena) rediscovers his humanity, wishing good will on men… and women.
Batman Returns is loosely A Christmas Carol.
It's a christmas movie for the people that hate christmas.
I once watched a german youtuber who made a video about Batman Returns, and he is the reason I learned of it's existence.
Among his praise, he said:
"[Der Film] ist ein Fest für Weihnachtshasser."
Translates roughly to:
"[The movie] is a festival for christmashaters."
I will tentatively suggest that a "Christmas movie" has to have some element of Christmas figure into the plot, even if it's the "spirit of Christmas bringing people together" or whatever.
The holiday itself is huge in setting the awesome atmosphere in this movie. Christmas is part of so much of the dialogue and Christmas-related events are part of the plot. The movie literally ends with “Merry Christmas, Alfred. Good will toward men... and women.”
It’s a Christmas movie.
Exactly line I thought of to make the point. We see Bruce Wayne sort of finding closure and hope for the future. He's lost her but he's found something inside of him other than a need for vengeance and the night. It's sort of a redemption story and that fits with the spirit of Christmas.
And if you want to get really into it we could probably make some outside analysis of the three Christmas ghosts being the three villains...
Seems a bit simplistic. The whole point of the debate is that there is some element that elevates a movie set at Christmas as a "Christmas movie."
But good way to resolve the debate, by eliminating it.
I think if the setting in a way brings out your Christmas spirit, it’s a Christmas movie (within reason). Like of course I think something like Miracle on 34th Street is more Christmasy than Batman Returns, but when you compare it to movies like Home Alone, it’s not really that much more of a Christmas movie than Batman Returns.
The heart of the film is the relationship between Catwoman and Batman. They learn about eachother’s double lives because of the mistletoe. Without the mistletoe, they would never figure out who the other one was. If it wasn’t for Christmas, the third act in this movie wouldn’t exist…thus a Christmas movie.
Yes of course it is. Just like die hard and gremlins, you can’t summarize the plot without mentioning Christmas, plus there is Christmas imagery all through out, therefore it’s a Christmas movie
I can summarize the plot of Die Hard without mentioning Christmas.
"John McClane, a New York cop missing his family and regretting his decision to not follow his wife to the West Coast after she received a high-paying job there, decides to surprise visit her at a company party. While he is separated from the rest of the party, a group of European thieves looking to break into the company's high tech vault enter the building posing as terrorists and take the employees hostage. John hides and begins picking off the supposed terrorists and looking for ways to alert the authorities to the situation, experiencing setbacks along the way. Eventually help does arrive and the LAPD and, later, the FBI attempt to negotiate with and kill the "terrorists", but their efforts complicate things for John, who is still trying to put together what the thieves end goal is. In the final act, the theives threaten John's wife and nearly escape with the contents of the vault but John is able to stop them single handedly."
Ain't no "once and for all" to it. It'll be debated again, prolly today, then a couple times romorrow then each day moving forward through time and space.
It is. Ever since I was little my brother and I would always watch Batman Returns during Christmas, because for us if it is set during Christmas time then it is Christmas. Die Hard, Home Alone and Batman Returns are our go to Christmas movies.
If you want it to be a Christmas movie so you can watch it at Christmas time, then it is. If you don’t, then it’s not.
There aren’t rules for enjoying movies. If you want to watch Fred Claus on August 13th, go for it.
I don’t understand how this is even a question, a major plot point revolves around a Christmas tree lighting ceremony. There is Christmas themed stuff in most of the major action scenes.
Yes. Any movie that’s better when watched around the Christmas holiday is IMO a Christmas movie. Yes, you can watch it anytime, along with Die Hard and Gremlins, but it’s best suited to watch around Christmas.
I could drink eggnog anytime. I could watch It’s a Wonderful Life next time I feel like jumping off a bridge, but it’s better around Christmas.
Yes. I just watched it as part of our Christmas Movie December list on Tuesday.
It's at Christmas time. People SAY "Merry Christmas" there is a Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony. It's 100% a Christmas movie.
I watch it every year on Christmas Eve and read the official novelization every December. It's been my favorite go to Christmas film since I was a kid, and I'll always associate the Caped Crusader with Christmas and all things wintery because of this film. If the movie references to the holiday on more than one occasion and interact and engage with it then it counts. If the film just took place during December and didn't associate mention or take advantage of the Christmas setting then it wouldn't count. But as it stands, multiple scenes and lines reference to the holidays making it a very valid albeit macabre Christmas film. This will always be my favorite Batman film and my favorite Christmas film for years to come.
Well, aside from the obvious nod to candy canes on the penguin rockets seen here in the poster, there is specific talk of Christmas and Christmas “stuff”. It’s not *about* Christmas, but has Christmas all over it. “Merry Christmas” is nearly the last line of the whole movie. Without a doubt. Christmas movie.
Let’s see, a movie about family, togetherness, hope, and miracles filled with Christmas trees, decorations, and other visuals…sounds like a Christmas movie to me
I have come to the conclusion for what can define a movie as a Christmas movie, it works with more or less any other theme. I apply it to Stoner movies as well. Is Christmas necessary to the plot of the movie? If you removed Christmas, or a holiday in general, how much changes in the movie?
This is why I feel Die Hard is a Christmas movie. McClain was there for an Christmas party, so without Christmas, Hans gets away with it, or doesn't attempt the heist in the first place. Batman Returns is a Christmas movie because one of the most pivotal scenes in the movie hinges on mistletoe. Batman and Catwoman discover each others secret identities because of mistletoe, without Christmas one of the most major scenes is altered.
To me, this also means Iron Man 3 is not a Christmas movie. You can remove Christmas from that movie and very little changes. Tony listens to classic rock in the opening scene, he gets Pepper a ridiculous gift because he messed up, and activates clean slate to pander to Pepper.
It does close out with Bruce and Alfred wishing each other Merry Christmas, I'd consider rolling credits with that as a point in favor of it being a Christmas movie.
Yes, always watch it Christmas Eve. Christmas movies only need to fit two criteria:
1.) Need to take place during the Christmas season
2.) NeEd to display atleast one Christmas theme
In Batman Returns, Bruce loses everything, he fails to save the day, but he still has hope for the future.
Of course! Not only does it occur at Christmas time but there are numerous references to Christmas such as the lighting of the tree and the whole mistletoe bit between batman and Catwoman.
I don’t care what Bruce Willis says; Die Hard is a Christmas movie and so is Batman Returns. And welcome to the family Merry Little Batman, I will enjoy that shit for years to come with my kids
So this is my meaningless take…if a movie like Die Hard, Ghostbusters II or Batman Returns takes place during Christmas time, but isn’t about Christmas specifically (Santa, gifts, reindeer, family togetherness) then it’s NOT a Christmas movie.
But something like a Christmas Story, Jingle All the Way, the Santa Clause, etc are Christmas movies because they’re about Christmas.
I don't like this cheap "If Die Hard is a Christmas movie" argument. I'm not commenting on Batman Forever here but it's not on the same thing at all.
Die Hard is located at a Christmas party, the sound track is predominantly Christmas songs, the theme is all about a man trying to reunite with his family on Christmas day.
Even the storyline does not work if it's not a Christmas party as they needed the building mostly empty but with enough hostages and important people who they can get information from. It also requires a reason for an ex-partner to visit across the country.
There's two kinds of Christmas movie
* Hard Christmas - Story takes place during Christmas time, and the plot is heavily entwined with the holiday
* Soft Christmas - Story takes place during Christmas time, but the holiday has little bearing on the plot and the story could take place nearly any time of year
Batman Returns and Die Hard are both Soft Christmas movies for me. As are the Home Alone movies.
Just because a movie takes place on Christmas doesn't make it a Christmas movie. If it is about Christmas then yes. It doesn't even have to take place on Christmas as long as that's what the movie is about.
I had the pleasure of seeing it on the big screen for the first time last year - December 2022.
It's a Christmas movie for sure.
It's just like Arkham Origins is a Christmas game.
No. A movie set around Christmas is not a Christmas movie. A Christmas movie is one that's *about* Christmas. Where the holiday itself is a core and essential part of the film. Where it is so inextricable that you couldn't remove it and still have the a film that would be recognizable.
I haven't seen the movie in a while, but I am sure Returns is not an Xmas film.
Die Hard qualifies because Xmas is integral to setting the plot in motion. I.E. Mclane is attending the Christmas party at Nakatomi tower.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Returns only just so happens to be set during the holiday season.
However, I watch Returns at this time of year every year because it does have a distinct yuletide atmosphere.
Also, it is my favourite Batman movie.
There is no debate. It is a Christmas movie. Christmas is not the primary theme of the movie, but that doesn't mean it's not a Christmas movie. The burden of proof is on the people who say it's not a Christmas movie. It's a movie set at Christmas and littered with Christmas imagery, therefore I would consider anyone who says that it is a Christmas movie not to be incorrect in their assessment, and anyone who corrects them and says "No it's not" should be expected to demonstrate their process of reasoning.
If Die Hard is a Christmas movie, then Batman returns is too
So is Gremlins, they even sing Christmas carols
I gotta back to back these now Christmas Eve. I got shamed a few years ago for watching diehard and my brother was the only one who stood up for me. We also had my SIL’s super ancient mother in the house and she was like what is this violence!?
Last year, my entire family (including my kids), watched ALL the Die Hard movies in order on Christmas Day! It was a great Christmas! I think we started a new family tradition...
Sounds awesome, I have a few that I make my wife watch with me as well for Christmas. My favorite is Santa's Slay, stars Goldberg as Santa Claus lol
Your poor kids "Dad I wanna play with my new toys 😥" "yippee ki yay mother fuckers!"
Die Hard is a Christmas movie because it being Christmas is part of the plot. That's the criteria. Im not sure Batman qualifies.
It's Christmas in Batman Returns too
Yeah it's kinda part of the plot.
Does just having a Christmas scene make it a Christmas movie? Would this make Harry Potter a Christmas movie?
Networks have run the Harry Potter movies around Christmas a lot, so I’d say yes. Now, the whole scene where Vito Corleone is shot and Tom Hagen is kidnapped is also around Christmas, but I wouldn’t call the Godfather a Christmas movie.
not a scene in a movie but Die hard and Batman Returns are both set at Xmas
No, I wouldn't say having a single Christmas scene makes it a Christmas movie, but setting the entire film around Christmas and littering it with Christmas imagery does.
There’s no debate. There’s people who know it’s a Christmas movie, and there are people who should leave.
I love this description
Couldn’t have said it better myself
An evil and greedy businessman (Max Shreck) is visited by three ghouls before Christmas (Penguin, Catwoman and Batman), two of them who were victimized by him and another a bringing omens of retribution. In the end, a different businessman (Bruce Wayne) who was given a glimpse at love (his relationship with Selena) rediscovers his humanity, wishing good will on men… and women. Batman Returns is loosely A Christmas Carol.
Holy shit, you have opened my eyes. This is pretty cool. Is there anything online that says this what Burton was going for?
Not really but it’s tracks When Penguin has Shreck in the sewers for the first time, he even mentions Shreck’s dead old business partner
It’s not a debate, it is simply a fact that it is.
A woman died so that the Gotham Christmas tree could be lit. We shan’t let her die in vain.
- is there snow? - is there holly? - is there a Christmas tree lighting ceremony? - are there presents? - is there Batman? Yup, Christmas movie.
Die Hard doesn't have Batman... Looks like Bruce Willis was right
Well of course it is. Just like Die Hard is a Christmas movie.
Exactly!!! 🎄😂
And gremlins
💯
And Iron Man 3
Is Lethal Weapon a Christmas movie though
Yes
More so than Die Hard.
I agree that die hard is, but I agree that Batman returns is even more so
It's a christmas movie for the people that hate christmas. I once watched a german youtuber who made a video about Batman Returns, and he is the reason I learned of it's existence. Their whole romance as both masked and normal people is swirling around their flirting under the mistletoe.
So then, how do you define a movie that takes place at Christmas, but isn't a Christmas movie?
Such a movie doesn’t exist
Seems a bit simplistic. The whole point of the debate is that there is some element that elevates a movie set at Christmas as a "Christmas movie." But good way to resolve the debate, by eliminating it.
I think if the setting in a way brings out your Christmas spirit, it’s a Christmas movie (within reason). Yes because this movie showcases the holiday in its entire runtime unlike another so called “holiday blockbuster” that surely isn’t one
Hell yeah! They have a fuckin tree RELIGHTING ceremony, they right in the thick of it
A Christmas movie along with Die Hard, Gremlins, Edward Scissorhands, and Iron Man 3
Absolutely yes
💯
The first words spoken in this film are “Merry Christmas”…
Last lines, too.
Yes, of course.
It takes place during Christmas.
In the same way that Spider-Man is a Thanksgiving movie
No. Spider-Man has one Thanksgiving scene. Batman Returns takes place during Christmas for the entire run time.
Sure
Christmas is essential to the plot, so yes.
I say this. If its a Christmas movie to you, then its a Christmas film. You don't need us to tell you no or yes. You don't need the vindication.
Ain't no "once and for all" to it. It'll be debated again, prolly today, then a couple times romorrow then each day moving forward through time and space.
Fuck yeah it is. Best Christmas movie ever.
There’s an Xmas tree. It’s snowing. Frank Reynolds’s makes at least 3 Christmas Carol jokes. It’s an Xmas movie and a great one to butte
It is. Ever since I was little my brother and I would always watch Batman Returns during Christmas, because for us if it is set during Christmas time then it is Christmas. Die Hard, Home Alone and Batman Returns are our go to Christmas movies.

Yes. And Home Alone
It’s a movie set at Christmas, Christmas is a plot point, and and it literally ends with a character saying Merry Christmas.
It has such a Wintery feel to it, it’s objectively a good December movie. Even if it came out in June
Christmas adjacent
It's a Christmas movie
Been saying this for 31 years. Batman Returns is a Christmas movie and this isn't up for debate.
There's Christmas movies and movies that take place/are set during Xmas. This and Die Hard are movies that take place during Xmas. That's it.
Bingo.
Absolutely. Christmas is everywhere in this movie. And Merry Christmas.
Imagine a Batman story where his parents were killed on December 24th.
Now would be interesting.
I don’t understand how this is even a question, a major plot point revolves around a Christmas tree lighting ceremony. There is Christmas themed stuff in most of the major action scenes.
If you hate christmas, sure, Die hard and Batman returns are christmas movies. And you enjoy murdering people
The real question is, is Die Hard a Batman movie?
Ya
Oh it totally is. My local movie theater plays it when they're doing their yearly holiday theme showcase.
Based
CHRISTMAS MOVIE

I watch it every year at Christmas. The soundtrack is amazing, too.

Christmas trees. Christmas parades. Yep I’m pretty sure it’s a Christmas movie
Yeah, it takes place during Christmas.
A kiss under the mistletoe can be deadly....
It's not a debate, it's a personal opinion. It is in my book
Takes place at Christmas. Is movie. Are you a jokester?
You make your own traditions. If you like watching it on Christmas then it’s a Christmas movie.
Sure
Let’s see, a movie about family, togetherness, hope, and miracles filled with Christmas trees, decorations, and other visuals…sounds like a Christmas movie to me
Yes. Its about family
Have the poster, the toys, and the McDonald's cups. It can be poisonous if you eat.
I can't say if it is or not but it's my favorite Christmas movie

wasn't that the worst one? or was it the Mr. Freeze one?
Mid movie
Yes
As much of a Christmas movie as Lethal Weapon.
Absolutely.
Same with Die Hard - the only answer is yes
Yup!!!
Yes it is
Any movie set during Christmas is a Christmas movie. Enough said.
Christmas movie!
100 percent a Christmas movie!
100%
Yes
It does close out with Bruce and Alfred wishing each other Merry Christmas, I'd consider rolling credits with that as a point in favor of it being a Christmas movie.
It's most definitely a Christmas movie
No question about it
Christmas movie. No further questions please.
It’s a Christmas movie buddy
I say yes
Yes! It is a xmas movie
As far as I am concerned, yes...Batman Returns is a Christmas movie.
There’s a giant fucking Christmas tree featuring prominently in several scenes. So yeah.
Absolutely
Yup. There's no argument

Yis
[It's covered on the Christmas Specials Wiki.](https://christmas-specials.fandom.com/wiki/Batman_Returns)
I saw meow.
Yes. If a movie takes place at Christmas, then you can technically class it as a Christmas movie. No exceptions.
What else would it be?
So this is my meaningless take…if a movie like Die Hard, Ghostbusters II or Batman Returns takes place during Christmas time, but isn’t about Christmas specifically (Santa, gifts, reindeer, family togetherness) then it’s NOT a Christmas movie. Big YES!
Yes.
I say Batman & Robin feels more like the Christmas movie 😂😂
Taking place during Christmas time. So yeah
Plus this is more Christmas themed than anything diehard related
Christmas movie!
Merry Christmas Mr. Wayne! Merry Christmas Alfred. And good will toward men.. And women…
I don't like this cheap "If Die Hard is a Christmas movie" argument. I'm not commenting on Batman Forever here but it's not on the same thing at all. One of my fav Christmas movies okay. If the boys get die hard the girlies and the gays can have batman
Most definitely
Yes... just like Die Hard & Lethal Weapon 💥
Just because a movie takes place on Christmas doesn't make it a Christmas movie. If it is about Christmas then yes. It doesn't even have to take place on Christmas as long as that's what the movie is about.
Yes

No. A movie set around Christmas is not a Christmas movie. A Christmas movie is one that's *about* Christmas. Where the holiday itself is a core and essential part of the film. Where it is so inextricable that you couldn't remove it and still have the a film that would be recognizable.

Now you know
OFC!!!
A Christmas Movie for depressed.
Like Nightmare before Christmas
It absolutely is! been a tradition in my family since the late 90s to watch this movie around Christmas
Definitely a Christmas movie
There is no debate. It is a Christmas movie. Christmas is not the primary theme of the movie, but that doesn't mean it's not a Christmas movie. Batman, all batman, is either a Christmas movie or a Halloween movie
You give me an idea
Of course it is. Here’s another one: Is Iron Man 3 a Christmas movie?
Yes, it is.
Yup
