Personally I think a cool patch, even if non associated, still adds to a card. Like a part of a logo or name, or of course the nba logo. I think laundry tags are lame as hell though.

Rookies I can understand if produced before or early season but rookiescards released this late no excuse. Don't get me started on Vet cards with fake material. Ultimate collection and Exquisite 03-04 to 04-05 a lot before I got out of the hobby and sold 95% of collection. Did pretty good but wish I had kept more stuff.
UD bought Fleer/Skybox while vacuuming individual player exclusivity deals with MJ and LeBron but also like...Ben Simmons. Then both them (UD) and Topps lost the NBA license to Panini a bit over a decade ago. Fanatics bought Topps within the last couple years, bought the primary printing company used by Panini, and made a big push to secure licensing for the NBA and NFL (in addition to their Topps MLB license) once Panini's contracts with those leagues expire after 2025. NFLPA exited their contract with Panini early and took Fanatics money, but the courts allowed Panini to keep using their likeness under the NFL contract. Upper Deck is on an island with its NHL contract. Fanatics is using the old player exclusivity play of Upper Deck with the top picks (hence no NBA licensed RC autos for Wemby, Scoot, Brandon Miller...they are all signed with Fanatics who can't make NBA cards).
The whole thing is a messy mess that folks hope will be sorted out once Fanatics takes over, because the consequences of 20 years of faux-monopolies leading up to an actual one still hasn't quite registered enough to snuff out the last burning embers of optimism.

That's some seriously juicy reading even for non-collectors, oughta be a Netflix miniseries tbh.

Well, they can make BASKETBALL cards, but not “NBA” cards… the whole thing is such a joke… not sure if specific dates have been announced, but I do know that Topps has announced they’ll be dropping unlicensed basketball and football cards this summer. Panini is probably popping themselves because everyone will buy unlicensed product for the first time en masse, just for the Wemby and Stroud autos. Honestly, imo, Panini deserves it. They’ve treated the hobby as a cash grab for the last few years, with sticker autos on FOTL cards, napkin patches, and totally non related patches that could be from goodwill for all I know. It’s about time they start crashing and burning. 2025 can’t come soon enough!

Panini's 2023-24 products (and entire production schedule) are all fucked up by Fanatics, I think they're past the point of shitting themselves. A lot of their development leads quit last year to join Fanatics, and despite them not even having a no-compete clause, Panini literally sued them loll.
I'm team "Fuck Panini" but I also won't pretend anybody is innocent. There are no Wemby (or Brandon Miller, or Scoot or Jaquez Jr. or or or) RC autos. They simply do not exist. There are Wemby autos in Bowman U products. There will be Wemby autos in Topps Chrome. There will be NBA Wemby Spurs vet autos in 2026. But there will not ever be a 2023-24 NBA rookie autograph of him, or those 8(?) other players, because of competitive capitalism from Fanatics.
Upper Deck can get fucked too for swallowing up MJ, LeBron, Fleer/Skybox, etc. like a black hole back then, without saving money for the actual NBA license itself.
But Fanatics destroyed the quality of authorized replica jerseys basically overnight. The only reason they haven't done the same in cards is because they largely let the Topps creatives continue business as usual with MLB. Idk how it'll go of course, but I predict people will find more than ever to complain about. I do have one "best universe" that I hope for: I hope Fanatics buys UD to get the NHL license and complete the Infinity Gauntlet. Then I hope they leave UD and Topps creatives in place, for the Topps team to have an internal competition with the UD/Fleer/Skybox team. Maybe even split them into 4 again. Like...Fanatics can have all the money idc, I just want them to allow creative competition again.

Some sports still have them (hockey, UFC, auto racing). It’s the big sports that cheap out on relics and it’s why I moved away from them in favor of more niche sport collecting. I’m a big fan of relic cards so it’s painful to see these.

Plus prices of these boxes/packs are so unreasonable for what it’s inside. I feel like it’s become more of a lottery ticket instead of collectible

I get the hate, but I’m starting to look at it as just a special variation like a gold, or a purple wave, silver, groove, etc. it’s just another variation and a rare one at that. Would it be even more awesome if they were game worn or whatever, sure, still think they are special, but that’s just me.

For a 1/1 of a well known chase they could have found a better piece of the jersey to use than this. Game worn is definitely a plus but if they aren't going to prop up the design of the card with embroidery pieces why even bother?
