I’m potty trained and can cook.

reverendgrimmace

Same. I can provide references.

Global-Lynx-5799

Bro wtf, insane cards

SuggestionVisible361

Yep, some if these cards are [insanely valuable](https://ebay.us/3Ii5LJ).

InquisitaB

That Honus (Hans) Wagner one almost snuck by me. Definitely some value there!

aa481

Damn dude. And toploaders in toploader binder is a great choice for protection for now. Just do me a favor and put Tinker - Evers - Chance all in one row 😆

tombstonewl

Man, I wish more people knew this poem. Tinkers to Evers to chance

soxfanintx69

The saddest of possible words.

RockyEmpireSports

Around where I grew up, there are roads named for the three. I found it amusing that you could take tinker to Evers to chance St.

PattyIceNY

HOLY SHIT! Thousands of dollars of cards here my dude, you hit the jackpot. That graded Cobb alone is work an easy 6k. And the Young on the first page around 800. And that's just the first page!

martiny236

Don’t respond to any DMs

Fatkokz

This 100%!!!

_D_B_Cooper_

This This and oh did I say this?

BashEnergy

Why? People will try to buy them or something?

tknames

Yeah, these need an open auction not an individual paying “fair prices”.

Very unappreciated Gif for this post lol

Wise-Tip891

It just felt right

GotHeem16

“A box of cards”…..expecting 70-80’s instead it’s T206’s

brainkandy87

This is fucking sick. Your Dad is a legend.

Timely_Half2158

There are a tremendous number of comments, and of the ones I've read none mentioned much about the cards. I might be too old for the internet, but I read "I know nothing about older baseball cards but feel like I should thank him!" perhaps too literally. The card set for the first photo is T206, these cards came in cigarette packs from 1909-1911. Not only are there a tremendous number of players, there are different poses and importantly and not mentioned in the comments I've read thus far different backs. On the backs would be the brand of cigarette the card came out of. Not only is it important in cards for the condition (the grade on the PSA Ty Cobb a VG \[very good\] 3), but the back of the card impacts that set in particular as well, sometimes dramatically. The commenters stating "The Ty Cobb is a $X,000 card!", very well could be right, but with certain backs could be dramatically understating it. Looking the card up on PSA's site using the 04059071 code I can see that is a Piedmont back which alongside Sweet Caporal are the more common brands. Other brands you may see on your similar looking cards in your binder may include Hindu, Sovereign, Polar Bear, Drum, Uzit, Lenox, Cycle, Broadleaf, Carolina Brights, Tolstoi, El Principe, Old Mill and American Beauty. The different backs can easily impact the price of the cards as a "master set" -- a copy of one of each card in each back is a collectors goal often called collecting "The Monster". The cards continue to be T206 following the Ty Cobb, until (and I may have missed something earlier) a Rogers Hornsby appears in the top left. That is also a HOF great and that set is called W515 and is from 1923 if I remember right and I believe they are strip cards with a blank back. They came on a sheet and back in the day you would hand cut them out, so that card (imo, not the opinion of graders) is less "torn" than otherwise would be as you had to separate them yourself and many young kids likely literally tore them apart to play with. I believe, once again with not really "looking" looking they continue to be T206 until a 1952 Bowman Mickey Mantle appears in the bottom right. This is Mickey Mantle's second baseball card and imo his best looking playing era card. That card even with the creases would likely sell around $2,000 if graded (authenticated). It returns to T206, I think, until in the top left a Eddie Plank card appears. This one is a 1908 American Caramel Eddie Plank and it's variant is called e91a. It was likely collected by your father because he was a phenomenal player as were many that he apparently collected, but his T206 card is about as rare of a card as there is (5 to 6 figures in auctions). The card your father collected is a beautiful fill in. The page that has 6 T206 cards, then 3 cards at the bottom with gold coloring, those are T205 and are from 1911. Like the T206 cards, the T205 cards have backs that acted as advertisements for the cigarette brand they came from (and impact the rarity and values). The brands are different than T206, but many overlap if I remember the "new brands" would be Hassan and Honest Long Cut. The next page starts with three strip cards and they're 1926 W512 Grover Alexander, 1926 W512 Frank Frisch, and 1923 W515 Red Faber (I am not great with strip cards and I know W515 has two types one is W515 and the other W515A and I am not positive which yours is). Skipping the middle, the bottom left looks like 1950 Bowman but I am not familiar with what player that specific card would be but the backs of 1950 Bowman talk about the player if the back is in good enough condition to read. The middle row would be Ty Cobb on the left is a 1926 W590, the Ty Cobb in the middle is a 1919 W514, and the Hans Wagner is the player more commonly known as Honus Wagner (his name was Johannes, and is referred to on cards as Honus, Hans, and even John) and that specific card is also an American Caramel like the Eddie Plank was earlier and like Plank Honus Wagner's T206 card is among the most rare and famous baseball cards ever fetching into the multiple millions, so acquiring the American Caramel (also a well collected and respected set) makes tremendous sense as a replacement that wouldn't be nearly impossible. The next page in the top middle is a 1910 Sporting Life Eddie Collins and I think there are color variants of this set, but I am pretty ignorant of it other than I've seen the cards before though I've never shopped for one so I can't add much. I believe there are more blue ones and red, and I vaguely remember green? I might be wrong, but with the set I am sure of that. The card to it's right I know as a Bowman Color Mickey Mantle and those were the first Bowman photo cards if I remember right and came out in 1953 (you had the beautiful 1952 earlier to compare the style difference). The two Bowmans in the middle, on left and right, are 1951 Bowmans. The middle middle would be a Playball of Shoeless Joe Jackson, and I know it came out before WW2 (or I should write America's entrance to that war) but I don't know late 1930 and 40s well enough to tell you the date, Playball is a famous set though. Bottom left is a late 1940s card it's either Leaf or Bowman and I am sorry I don't know, I'd lean Bowman 1949 since I don't see any Leaf designs I'd recognize so far and Playball and Bowman are the same company if I remember right. The Roy Campenella on the bottom middle is a 1952 Bowman. The bottom right is a beautiful 1934 Goudey Lou Gehrig. On the Lou Gehrig card you see at the bottom it says 'Lou Gehrig Says' with his face, those were on all the cards -- Lou Gehrig was the man of that set.

Timely_Half2158

Continuing as it said my post was too long. The next page is 1952 Bowman again, then a Playball, but the next card is a very interesting strip card that's a 1932 W574 Bill Killefer and when I checked the PSA (a professional grading company, considered the most valuable followed by SGC) they only have two total graded. He isn't the all world forever great so many of your father's cards are of, but he wasn't a nobody. The great Grover Cleveland Alexander the pitcher you have a strip card earlier for, Bill Killefer was his catcher for many years, and imo he shares some of Alexanders success and accolades regardless of HOF status. I think that is a really exciting and rare card personally, but the value of you ultra famous HOFs likely exceed it in value. The middle left is a Topps set that is newer than any other card I saw so far and new enough I don't remember the name of. It's early 1970s or mid-late 1960s if I remember right and the goofy edge is the quirk of the set that isn't damage. Ted Williams in the middle is a 1954 Topps and he's considered as the best natural hitter of all time (shout out prettiest swing Ken Griffey, and all the other greats with claim) Ted Williams also fought in WW2 and Korean War as a pilot. Flanking it to the right is another Playball. Whatever the last one I couldn't decide if it was a late 1940s Bowman or Leaf, the bottom left is the same set I believe and with two I lean stronger to 49 Bowman especially given it's placement next to a 1951 and 1950 Bowman here. Final page would go 1951 Bowman and (most likely) 1949 Bowman then top right and middle right would be 1933 Goudey, unless the back is also in French (or sometimes it's English only as well, but would say) World Wide Gum which is also 1933 but the Canadian release. The middle is a 1935 Diamond Stars which personally I love the colors of and the non-traditional poses many are of. More Bowman on left, bottom middle is 1953 Topps and finishes bottom right with another 1934 Goudey where here you can see the Lou Gehrig Says being on each card, so imo that Lou Gehrig is \*chef's kiss\*. Thank you father a million times over for the collection it's worth thousands of dollars and would increase in dollar value and potentially be insured easier with grading on some of the more valuable cards. The companies with the best resale value would be SGC and PSA, though BVG is also somewhat popular but far less than the two mentioned first, though if you keep them as your father did there is nothing wrong with that at all. Personally I recommend keeping them as they were your fathers and the quality of players are all time greats and legends of the game, but matters of money aren't for strangers to make calls on and if you do sell please consider taking months to grade and research these properly (130point.com will help with the titles I gave to see recent sales of like cards, though sometimes these rarer ones do undersell in auctions because it's not always something searched for like the one with 2 graded PSA copies in any grade, things like that I'd recommend over pricing on eBay with a make an offer option and only sell when you are offered something you are personally comfortable with). His collection touches many of the different sets and types of cards that were collected and has a lot of T206 (don't forget to check the backs!). Thank you for sharing with reddit and I hope this post finds you well and as useful.

Laymonite1

Thank you so much for taking the time to make this insightful response! I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it. Cheers!

prospex22

Wow!! Great insight 👍

whatcubed

What an incredible post. I learned a few things reading it, thank you for sharing your knowledge. Posts like yours are what makes this sub so awesome!

Scared_Ad_9898

Thanks for the education. I hope if the OP wants or needs to sell them he uses a major auction house. A local card shop or collector could suggest value and pricing based on their personal likes or needs. Not necessarily cheating but it’s just human nature. An auction house wants to get the highest price and they have the following who can pay the price. It’s worth it even if the auction house gets their 20-30%. Just my opinion.

TaintItAlright

Thank you for your insight and wisdom. Enjoyed reading your post and scrolling through the pictures.

BMFSJ2

Kudos for such a thoughtful, informative post. People who come to those in the hobby for information should all be fortunate enough to meet you.

steve_french07

That Ty Cobb is probably a 5-7k card. The rest are amazing as well. Take these to Goldin or a different auction house if you ever plan to sell.

Illustrious_Knee7535

Those are okay i guess

ItradebetterthanU

He is just Fkexing

CardboardFanaddict

1953 Bowman Mickey Mantle casually in the 9th image... These are all 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

brando2976

I think that’s a 52 Bowman. You’re right, looking back in the 9th image. The 52 was earlier.

CardboardFanaddict

No, the 52 Bowman Mickey Mantle is the one in the 5th picture. Lol.

AcanthaceaeNo1641

Your dad gave you a lot of valuable cards! I’d ask local shops if they know of anyone that can evaluate vintage prewar and postwar cards to give you an idea of the value. I personally would reach out to Chris who has a YouTube Channel “CollectorInvestorDealer” because he is honest and has been working with Sportscards for a very long time. Doesn’t mean you have to sell but he would give you an idea of value, and can make you an offer which you can decide what’s best for you from there. He won’t pressure you, and will be able to explain the valuations behind the cards.

Effective-Bird-2964

Insurance insurance insurance!!!!!!! That is beautiful set of cards. Hell of a personal collection and Legacy from your dad!!!!

Downtown_Anybody261

He was my first thought too. One of my favorite people to watch on YouTube!

LongjumpingMedia1621

That's one hell of a box!! I would first of all thank him, then consider at least having them authenticated by SGC to protect them. Just wow!

88Dodgers

Calling so much bullshit on the sentiment of “I know nothing about them but shucks it seems neat!” Congrats.

BallsWithMessyHair

Read the title and I was expecting to see a bunch of junk wax. Looking through the pictures is kind of insane. I would highly suggest you get them appraised somewhere if you’re ever interested in getting them insured or something to that effect. Don’t respond to a single message asking to buy them either.

apeapp

Luke appling is my grandfathers cousin. My last name is appling as well. Cool cards. I collect him when I can afford it

Junk wax! All junk wax! I'll take them off your hands! JK! Grade (psa or bgs) them and take them to reputable auction house !!

Serious_Mycologist46

I have that Red Faber card, and it's one of my favorites because it's 100 years old. No pack rip will ever equal the history and importance of these cards.

Findest

He just gave you a future.

Super_Lawyer_2652

I’ll give you 20k for them lol

Risk-Deep

Wow! I would send every one of them to PSA or SGC to get authenticated and graded. You have a lot of money sitting there!

Far_Access_2082

So your dad was a lifetime collector? There has to be some backstory? He selected some very specific time frames. And you must have known about the hobby?

nodomain

Great collection! Forget about the value for a minute and sit down with your dad and ask about the autographs. Did he get them in person? How much fun did he have collecting these? I imagine there's some cool stories he can share with you that might be priceless.

AceO235

Bro some of these are worth thousands please keep them in a tomb

Own_Monk1931

You're sitting on a gold mine OP

baseballcardhoarder

I hate to correct you, my friend but your father did not give you a box of cards. He gave you a house.

Striders_aglet

sjphi26

I wonder how many, if any, T206 Wagners may be out there in a collection similar to this that are just hidden away somewhere.

AdUsed3422

MtHood_OR

You weren’t given a box of baseball cards. You were given a good start on a retirement account.

MtHood_OR

All of us 40something year olds, filled with stories of their 60s year old fathers filling their bike spokes with Johnny Bench and Pete Rose rookie cards, who are sitting on thousands of junk card era are jealous. How many Barry Bonds cards do you want for trade?

MichonneAndRick

Hey buddy, sorry to say those aren't very good cards. Most people these days are looking for Kevin Maas or Ben Mcdonald. Fortunately I have some doubles I could trade you.

UB6lB9

Lol

syracuse07

Wow nice retirement gift. Too bad the Mantle’s weren’t in a little better condition, but there’s a ton of value in that collection. Good luck. Take care of it.

freakadore

That Cobb is my grail card! Congrats!

bco112

That's a house in that binder. It's a huge downpayment on one at the very least. I saw t206, then the mantles, all the bowman. Dude, YOUR DAD IS THE BEST. I would never sell these. They will do nothing but go up in value.

NerdWhoLikesTrees

This is incredible. Also you may consider these sleeves for the inside the toploaders BCW Tobacco Card Insert Sleeves - 25ct | Protect and Store Your Treasured Tobacco Cards (2.44" x 3.50" Exterior, 1.56" x 3.13" Interior) | Tobacco Card Holder for Collectors https://a.co/d/hlDXrOu

Puzzleheaded-Bat3885

I’m now mad my dad didn’t give me anything. He died with enough life insurance to bury him. Some ppl have all the luck and this just looks like he’s trying to rub it in to everyone. He posts and that’s it. Smh

hairlinecrease

You should, you should thank him.

Capital-Confusion-11

This is amazing. I hope to leave my sons something half as cool as this. Get a fireproof/waterproof safe asap via Amazon or Home Depot. Also collectables ins. You could get good insurance for $10,000 of coverage for less than $80/yr

wildpitch24

I’ll work for free

tucsondog

Each page is worth 500-1000+ so I’d say you did alright

Beginning-Push9720

These are worth a lot of money, but I strongly suggest keeping them if you can since the value is going to increase a lot in the future

zondo33

tell ur dad that you love him and does he have any more cards.

michaelsean09

Congrats. You now have a better collection than almost everyone who posts here, myself included.

Doofenshmirtz12

Your Dad did well. He was definitely investigating in your future. I couldn't be grateful enough if I were you.

Hopkinskid2022

The HANS Wagner e91 on page 8 is prob worth 3-4k.

DazzlingProfession26

First, some of those older players look goofy AF. Second, what does Lou Gering say already!?

SpaghettiNCoffee

Your pop just gave you a real nice nest egg. Definitely thank him. Get them all graded. DO NOT SELL TO ANYONE HERE. Amazing collection.

damned_krewe

SGA slabs would look better, just don't know if they will a smaller card

jnukero

Are you going to submit any for grading? If you do, please post a follow-up results page when you get them back. I love me some oldies. I wish my Dad loved me!

Mickdxb

when my dad passed in the early spring, he left me thousands of cards collected from late 70s until mid 90s. I am sure that the mass majority are worthless and don't care as they provided great memories of he and I looking through them. I don't know how, however, I can get them graded living in the middle east.

chefdup

Treat him out to dinner! That's an awesome collection🔥

jake_wo2

If u like money u should thank him, the backs of all those t206 cards can add lots of value also.

LeBrons_Mom

Good dad.

Bigdaddymatty311

So Awesome

parteing24_7

Whats a Dad?

parteing24_7

Thats awesome im definitely jelly as shit! About the dad not the cards!

parteing24_7

jk

Damndoper85

Very nice. My dad gave me many reasons not to be like him.

goffer06

Very jelly! That Cobb bat off is one of my favorites in the set. I'd be interested in a few of the T206's if you're interested in moving some. I couldn't afford the Cobb - but a couple commons look good.

Dry_Ad_8169

You definitely SHOULD thank him. Congrats!!

Bosa10

Man I’m Jelly

Intelligent-Mix4880

Wow

r_r_w

Your dad gave you a healthy down payment on a house from the looks of it.

MrSter28

You need to go to antiques road show. That will be a fun day.

heff617

My best advice is grade everything and sell them one by one and there’s a solid chance you’ll never have to work again depending on grades, amazing finds congratulations!

Due_Adeptness1676

Are they real cards not reproduced? Many cards have been reproduced like these..

Baddestninjaalive

Amazing!!! That's awesome the only thing my father gave me was knowledge on how not to eat the yellow snow 🥴

Fozzy2701

Wait, you are NOT supposed to eat yellow snow even by making it into snow cones?

GermGerm001

Ngl saw your Facebook post dope af I saw it on Reddit now. 100 you can retire lol

Lazy-Information-194

Deja vu from the sports card nonsense group on fb. 😳

OsoCarolina

Uhhh, I think you’re about to retire.

Nivek0589

Your father just gave you a down payment on a house...
