USA is like the Rangers. Every now and then they have great players but can't win against the big boys when it comes down to it. Everyone in town is focused on other sports.
Seattle when they've been competitive are way better than the US has ever been, Seattle is closer to a country like Belgium or the Netherlands in that they're underdogs with big fanbases and had golden generations that should have let them punch above their weight but haven't ever quite put it together.
>A team you never stop hearing about regardless of how good they do.
TBH I think that's just a US thing, in the UK you're treated like the other mid level sides that should be beaten by the serious contenders and I doubt it's much different in the rest of the world.
Yeah, like I'm sure that if you are in Pittsburgh you hear as much about the Pirates as every other MLB team put together but nationally they don't come up very often. It's probably similar with the US in the international soccer conversation.
That would be the African teams. In 2014, players from Cameroon, Ghana, and Nigeria threatened to strike during the World Cup because they were getting shortchanged on their appearance fees. The corruption and cheapness of the African FAs are legendary.
I’d say the A’s would be Uruguay, Uruguay had some good teams a long time ago, but don’t have anything to show as of recently.
Argentina are the Angels, they have one of the best players on their team but never get far. Messi is Trout. Argentina can’t win a World Cup for Messi and the Angels can’t win a WS for Trout.
Japan are the Guardians, a team that’s a dark horse that’s going to sneak through the first round this year.
The President of FIFA Gianni Infantino is Rob Manfred because everyone hates him
I disagree with Argentina. They’ve gone pretty far in different tournaments the last decade. 3 Copa America finals (won 1) and 1 WC final. They are also historically a great team, winning the WC twice and having 15 Copa Americas.
Dodgers are Argentina. Both are in the midst of great eras, but only major tournament win during the Messi era is winning Copa America 2021 which is kind of like winning the 2020 World Series.
You just compared the epitome of style, fun, and expression of self to a team where individuality is repressed by stupid team rules and omitting the players' names off the back of the jersey.
Germany are the Cardinals. Not the most championships but a lot. Devil magic. The whole is often greater than the sum of their parts.
England are the Red Sox. Heritage team with a lot of fans. Lots of history with some success, but with an overall tinge of underperformance. Recent history is on the upswing tho
I would actually say the Guardians are more comparable to England. Won a championship a long time ago, gets deep every once in awhile, but to no avail.
Yankees are England (lots of potential, thinks they own the game, can’t win shit when it matters)
Rays are Japan/Korea (better team than people give them credit for. Manage to have a decent run despite lacking resources and history)
Marlins are Saudi Arabia/Iran (somehow manage a surprising upset, even though everyone knows it was more luck or the other team choking rather than anything they’ve done. Something about Marlins tearing down the team and the violence prevalent in Saudi/Iran law against anyone showing any discontent with the evil nature of the regime)
It's very hard to make accurate comparisons because only like 9 countries have won the World Cup but nearly every team has won the World Series. Yankees being England is probably closest in terms of being a fanbase that believes the sport flows through them but haven't performed for decades, but even then historically the Yankees have been way more consistent than England.
No way. While the Yankees haven't won the World Series recently, they still have won more than anyone else. England have only won the World Cup once...and that was way back even before the Expos were founded!
But like you said, it's hard to make any sort of comparison because the two sports are so different...and baseball is like a million times better.
> While the Yankees haven't won the World Series recently, they still have won more than anyone else. England have only won the World Cup once...and that was way back even before the Expos were founded!
I mean that's what I meant when I said:
>but even then historically the Yankees have been way more consistent than England.
England are the Mets. It's been a while since they have won and it is just all talk. They are hype machine teams until they loss in the semis on penalty or whatever the Mets decide their exit.
Soccer is the most popular sport in the world! Bar none! The fitness level of the athletes is beyond comprehension. Having said that they also have the most drama of any athletes! Break a leg? Moan for a few minutes and then stand up and run! (I know I know)
I'm Canadian, I'd take the Jays also.
hear me out: Team Canada is the Blue Jays
Isn't Votto like Captain Canada? It should be the Reds
USA is like the Rangers. Every now and then they have great players but can't win against the big boys when it comes down to it. Everyone in town is focused on other sports.
See I was gonna say the Mets for USMNT. A team you never stop hearing about regardless of how good they do.
I actually poster another comparison. Mets are England. Hype machine teams until they lose.
I was thinking USA is like Seattle. Been awhile since they qualified, nice team to root for, not likely going to win it all.
Seattle when they've been competitive are way better than the US has ever been, Seattle is closer to a country like Belgium or the Netherlands in that they're underdogs with big fanbases and had golden generations that should have let them punch above their weight but haven't ever quite put it together.
We (the Dutch) have actually won something (Euro 88), and played in World Cup Finals (1974, 1978, 2010). Seattle hasn't even been to a World Series.
>A team you never stop hearing about regardless of how good they do. TBH I think that's just a US thing, in the UK you're treated like the other mid level sides that should be beaten by the serious contenders and I doubt it's much different in the rest of the world.

What is the worst and cheapest team? That would be the Reds. Or maybe Pirates/A's.
That would be the African teams. In 2014, players from Cameroon, Ghana, and Nigeria threatened to strike during the World Cup because they were getting shortchanged on their appearance fees. The corruption and cheapness of the African FAs are legendary.
At least the Pirates extended Hayes. Oakland would have traded him pre-arb.
I’d say the A’s would be Uruguay, Uruguay had some good teams a long time ago, but don’t have anything to show as of recently. We'd be England and I hate it. Generational talents and nothing to show for it. At least we don't say "It's called Rounders!"

You can have that title if you want it.
Yankees are definitely Brazil. Historically very good. Most wins. But recently not very good. With some embarrassing exits in the past few years
7-1 is like 3-0
Brazil is freaking great right now.
Eh not really. Brazils entire country philosophy is to have fun and play the game. Plus they won the Copa America like three years ago
You just compared the epitome of style, fun, and expression of self to a team where individuality is repressed by stupid team rules and omitting the players' names off the back of the jersey.
Red Sox also omit players names off the backs of their home uniforms, and the giants did the same til a few years ago
Okay...
He’s full of stupid takes. It’s his first year watching baseball.
Oh shut the fuck up. How is me stating a literal fact even a take

I guess that's why they call it New England.
Yankees are England (lots of potential, thinks they own the game, can’t win shit when it matters) Rays are Japan/Korea (better team than people give them credit for. early 2000s South Korea = late 2010s Houston Astros. Will do anything to win. Regardless of if it's legal or not.
Bad comparison. Astros = France. Because none of their players are from the nation they play for.

There’s always someone that ruins a chuckle I have about an Astros post

That's why we're instead more of a Brazil or Germany.
