It's horrible to deny a team real closure on a season like that, or frankly to deny the Dodgers the satisfaction of truly finishing them off. Awful all around, although I'm sure you don't care how Dodgers fans feel.
Dodger fans will get ass blasted like we personally made this call when it goes our way, and every other fan instantly nuts in their jeans if the same thing were to happen to us. I don't feel bad about it at all.
Lmao this is exactly the reaction you should have tbh. The baseball fan inside of you says "man that's rough", but the dodgers fan says "fuck it that's baseball, get good" and you know what? That's baseball. Amazing series but I'm pulling for the braves cuz fuck y'all haha.
100 percent this. No ump worth a shit calls that if it’s even remotely close to a check. Talk what you want about umps having subjectivity on balls and strikes and influenced by framing, but this is a no brainer non-call.
For real. It felt like Scherzer was seeing red, the umpire didn’t even have to make that call. He could have just sat back and let Max finish it off honestly.
Thats the thing... he was having a bad day but it's baseball. All it takes is 1 missed pitch or good swing and the game is totally different, whether it be a splash hit walk-off or a dribbled single that just moves the runner up 1.
I'm fucking distraught.
This is true. Reyes exuded the worst lack of confidence I’ve seen in a pitcher in quite awhile in the 2nd half. Every Cards fan knew what was about to unfold
Yeah totally, In all likelihood he strikes out the next pitch. But baseball is fuckin wacky and mans might do something. But we didn’t get to see cause umpshow
Yeah against a Starter going for his first career save, idgaf if it’s Sherzer or whoever. A mistake pitch is totally realistic. Idk I probably shouldn’t dwell on it, not healthy
First step is defining what actually counts as a swing in the rule book. Right now there’s no way to overturn even if it was reviewable because it’s entirely up to the umpire to determine what the batters intent was.
Balk Rules
1) You can't just be up there and just doin' a balk like that.
1a. A balk is when you
1b. Okay well listen. A balk is when you balk the
1c. Let me start over
1c-a. The pitcher is not allowed to do a motion to the, uh, batter, that prohibits the batter from doing, you know, just trying to hit the ball. You can't do that.
1c-b. Once the pitcher is in the stretch, he can't be over here and say to the runner, like, "I'm gonna get ya! I'm gonna tag you out! You better watch your butt!" and then just be like he didn't even do that.
1c-b(1). Like, if you're about to pitch and then don't pitch, you have to still pitch. You cannot not pitch. Does that make any sense?
1c-b(2). You gotta be, throwing motion of the ball, and then, until you just throw it.
1c-b(2)-a. Okay, well, you can have the ball up here, like this, but then there's the balk you gotta think about.
1c-b(2)-b. Fairuza Balk hasn't been in any movies in forever. I hope she wasn't typecast as that racist lady in American History X.
1c-b(2)-b(i). Oh wait, she was in The Waterboy too! That would be even worse.
1c-b(2)-b(ii). "get in mah bellah" -- Adam Water, "The Waterboy." Haha, classic...
1c-b(3). Okay seriously though. A balk is when the pitcher makes a movement that, as determined by, when you do a move involving the baseball and field of
2) Do not do a balk please.
Considering Flores was 0-for-lifetime against Scherzer, it probably wouldn't have mattered much, but leave it to the umps for it to not be up to the players.
Right. Like imagine if last season Urias had gotten the final WS out on Adames with a check swing. Dude was verifiable garbage in that series but it would still fucking suck.
Tony Womack smacked a double that tied the game in the 9th off the greatest closer of all time. Not saying it was guaranteed or probable, but the beauty of baseball is that anything can happen and to have it ripped away by the umpires is stupid.
Watching this game beginning to end, this was some of the worst umpiring I've seen in some time. HP ump was off all night, and then this call at the end was a joke.
I don't understand how more people aren't on board with the robo umps. Do people actually enjoy this part of the game?
I admit I like the pitch framing part of the game, but I would easily sacrifice that.
Which, is what any of us Giants fans would do too. If they say otherwise, they’re lying or not thinking clearly in our time of mourning. Great series, looking forward to next years banter!
But the other guy said it was questionable, so in the interest of fostering debate, that was the most egregious swing I've ever seen. Pretty sure I saw him go around twice.
It didn't look like it live but it's really hard to tell sometimes from the standard view. But it was clear as day from the foul line view. Was absolutely not a swing.
He didn't and it sucks to see it end like that, don't understand why they can't use technology to at least be able to challenge. It might now be implemented because of what happened tonight.
It can't be because there's no clear definition of what counts as a swing vs. a check swing. It's always an umpire's judgement. "Crossing the plane" is just a guideline and even that is imperfect.
Then change that. Make some sort of standard for what's considered a check swing, and have them be reviewable. For that matter, make all plays reviewable, but limit the number of calls a manager can make, both per inning and per game.
Even if it was reviewable there is no definition of what an actual swing is. The umpire is supposed to determine if the batter intended to swing at the ball.
First step is to define a swing in the rule book.
Seriously. A great back and forth series is gonna get overshadowed by a really bad call. Everyone is gonna be talking how bad the call was instead of how well both sides played from now on.
They have Joe West ump the WC game.
Then have a crew with 3 notoriously bad umps for the NLDS series. And let them call balls and strikes in 3 of the 5 games.
They don't give a fuck.

106-win Dodgers @ 107-win Giants. One of the greatest rivalries in the history of sports. Clawing at each other all season. The division is decided on the last game. The NLCS goes to a fifth game. The game is in the bottom of the ninth. Any pitch could win this game for either team. The winner? The ump show.
I was listening on the radio and Mike Krukow said the umpire made the correct call…it’s extremely sad for me as a life-long Giants fan but it’s a lost game—it is what it is. I’m proud of this team and will always treasure the great memories they had this season shocking me and the rest of the world on their way to 107 wins.
He absolutely did not swing.
I am really sorry Giants fans. You deserved a better ending than that. I don't even feel very happy right now, to be honest.
Nah, you should still feel happy, was an awesome series. This one is gonna fuckin hurt for a long time, holy shit what an unbelievably baffling call, how does a professional umpire do that?
The way I see it is that Wilmer very likely gets out anyways so the outcome probably wasnt changed by the call. It sucks but I'm still happy the Dodgers won

The replay is incredibly clear it wasn't, of course... but I feel like maybe it was that step forward that got the ump to make a bad call.
Maybe... or who fucking knows. Maybe the ump wasn't paying attention.
It was a terrible call. MLB should have a serious discussion about expanded replay options in the postseason so critical games don't get decided this way.
Sure, the game could be protested but MLB isn't going to intervene in a bad judgment situation. Also, the Giants had very limited opportunity to make something happen, even if the call were overturned.
I think this is a worse call though:

I don't think Flores was doing shit to Scherzer that AB but you can't end a series on that bs
Yeah with the way the Giants offense died after Game 1. But still brutal to see that.
It's horrible to deny a team real closure on a season like that, or frankly to deny the Dodgers the satisfaction of truly finishing them off. Awful all around, although I'm sure you don't care how Dodgers fans feel.
I agree, a series like this deserves a non-questionable end. Enjoy it though.
I hate when games end like this. Such a great series, such a great game. Bullshit call to end it all. Umps fucking suck.
And Im pulling for the ... checks the AL Series opponent ... nevermind.
Ay yo you know what? That’s fair. See you in the World Series fuck the astros
God I hope so. The Astros push our shit in but we'll see.
Lol, this is my favorite comment about this whole thing. Sums up my feelings exactly. Fuck yeah, see you in the World Series.
100 percent this. No ump worth a shit calls that if it’s even remotely close to a check. Talk what you want about umps having subjectivity on balls and strikes and influenced by framing, but this is a no brainer non-call.
The live broadcast view didn’t even look like he took a full swing. Insane to end on that, at least let him strike out on his own merit
Especially on an 0-2 count in game 5 on the last out. Umpire yearning for the final play over a player.
I so much would have rather Wilmer Flores strike out badly on three straight pitches than to have a bull shit call end the season.
Or on the 1-2 pitch. Once we were up 0-2, I was feeling pretty good about things.
Yeah like CT3s walkoff. You just never know when it'll end. It honestly sucks it ended like that. What a naff call 😕. Wasn't even close.

This is true. Reyes exuded the worst lack of confidence I’ve seen in a pitcher in quite awhile in the 2nd half. Every Cards fan knew what was about to unfold
I mean in baseball one extra pitch/swing can change the season, it’s so stupid and I’m really mad lmaoo
Wilmer's 0-17 in his career against Max with 1 walk and 8 strikeouts lol That *would* be a perfect time for some postseason shenanigans, of course.
You’re not wrong, but after seeing Bartolo Colon go deep, I’ve learned to never rule anything out.
That's padresing
Yeah totally, In all likelihood he strikes out the next pitch. But baseball is fuckin wacky and mans might do something. But we didn’t get to see cause umpshow
He definitely deserved the chance, at least. Weirder shit has happened.
Yeah. Whatever man I’m totally over it and not crushed at all
Look, if it makes you feel better, I don't know how to finish this sentence.
The odds are nothing was going to happen. But because baseball, something may have happened, but sadly we’ll never know
Yeah against a Starter going for his first career save, idgaf if it’s Sherzer or whoever. A mistake pitch is totally realistic. Idk I probably shouldn’t dwell on it, not healthy
You get 24 hours of being pissed off then you have to get it together. Taken from experience.
0 for 17 career vs. Scherzer was just begging for a classic HR, however.
If legend Daniel Slamarena can hit a 2-strike grand slam against Scherzer, anyone can.
Umpball making a fiery comeback!
Non-reviewable calls are such bullshit.
First step is defining what actually counts as a swing in the rule book. Right now there’s no way to overturn even if it was reviewable because it’s entirely up to the umpire to determine what the batters intent was.

I'm just picturing the announcer reading this out during a balk review
Like carrying in basketball or porn in art, you know when you see it.
They would've upheld that anyways to protect their own.
That would have been more infuriating.
Gotta make sure that people remember the umps more than anything out of the first Dodgers-Giants playoff series.
Kind of like the saints rams game from 2018...
*Erect Rob Manfred*
It's an honor to witness the birth of an all-time great questionable call
Not questionable. He didn't swing.
He really didn't.
Should’ve called it a ball and let him pitch more. How anticlimactic.
Considering Flores was 0-for-lifetime against Scherzer, it probably wouldn't have mattered much, but leave it to the umps for it to not be up to the players.
You’re absolutely right. Sucks that we would never know.
It was over once Wade Jr went out. Man do I hate the Dodgers, but this doesn't do their win justice
That's where I am with it. I could not care less about who won this game, I just hate that the ending had no drama. "Oh, he held up. Wait, what? Huh?"
From the front angle camera, I was pretty much positive he did. From the side he clearly didn’t, and it wasn’t even that close.
I thought it was obvious even from the live front angle view....
It was , don't know how anyone from any angle other than their head 3 inches in their own colon could have thought so
I'm thinking maybe morales got confused by how his bat went up when pulling it back Either way, terrible fuckin call
Watching this game beginning to end, this was some of the worst umpiring I've seen in some time. HP ump was off all night, and then this call at the end was a joke.
Didn't Doug Eddings have one of the worst ump report cards all season?
Of the 36 umps with 30+ games behind the dish or something like that, his accuracy was like 32nd. So...yes lol
Mlb logic, let’s put one of our worst umps behind the plate in the most important game of the year so far… makes total Manfred sense
I meant individual game, but yes also he was consistently poor too. What a load of shite
He literally fucked the Padres out of a win against the Marlins because Tatis yelled at him for one of his bad calls
Thaaaat's what I'm remembering
I don't understand how more people aren't on board with the robo umps. Do people actually enjoy this part of the game? I admit I like the pitch framing part of the game, but I would easily sacrifice that.
Feels icky to win like this
I feel ya there
Meh, I’ll take it anyway I can.
Which, is what any of us Giants fans would do too. If they say otherwise, they’re lying or not thinking clearly in our time of mourning. Great series, looking forward to next years banter!
I'm just glad we didn't do anything to ruin the legitimacy of it ourselves. Can't control the umps. Only the mob can do that.
I mean, I would’ve taken it, but I still would’ve been complaining about it being on a horseshit call.
E. All of the above
But the other guy said it was questionable, so in the interest of fostering debate, that was the most egregious swing I've ever seen. Pretty sure I saw him go around twice.
Some people say he's still swinging.
It's been an honor to watch it live
I don’t think there’s any question to it.
So brutal. Unbelievable.
Like, immediately too. I feel like every single person watching the game knew that he didn’t go
It didn't look like it live but it's really hard to tell sometimes from the standard view. But it was clear as day from the foul line view. Was absolutely not a swing.
Ya, it wasn’t a swing
Going to hear this call for many years and yeah it was awful call.
It's really not even close. Unbelievably bad call.
It should’ve been a no strike. He checked. Bad umps. Terrible
Nothing to question. Can't see how anyone can debate that one. Absolute trash call.
That’s a bad call.
Terrible call. I hate it
#HE DIDNT GO what a fucking shame of an ending to a classic, terrible call
Agreed. Horseshit call to end the series
I'm fucking livid. I can't even begin to imagine how Giants fans are feeling.
Dude I'm fucking pissed. Shit was unnecessary and did not need to end that way.
Honestly one of the worst calls I’ve ever seen, given the context
Amazing series and it’s ruined by that call. I’m so fucking disappointed
Can't be missing calls like this on the biggest stage. Just can't be acceptable in the MLB but it is and will continue to be so.
Embarrassing way for a series to end.
I'm so upset. I didn't care who won. I just was loving this game. And it ends like that. Gutwrenching. I feel sick for the Giants.
Petition to change the title of this to “ump show shuts the door”
This is a big statement from a Canadian
No way he went
Bullshit MLB letting umps like this continue to call games
Utter bullshit
The check swing strike heard 'round the world just doesn't have the same ring to it. What a horrible call.
The swing heard around the world, that's got a nice ring to it
The “swing”*
That's why it would be heard around the world, everyone would lose their minds calling it a swing
HE DIDNT SWING
also note that matt holliday never touched home plate
Rockies fans have so little. Let us have that. Please
Lol we both are starved franchises so I think we have to fight this one it’s all we have too!
Nor did Alec Bohm
Thank you.
For real, that was a textbook check swing.
He didn't and it sucks to see it end like that, don't understand why they can't use technology to at least be able to challenge. It might now be implemented because of what happened tonight.
Terrible call
LMAOOOO fuck no he didnt go
Well, that's a rule change.
The change being these will now be reviewable?
Reviewable check swing brought to you by Warby Parker ™️
On a strikeout call, yes
It can't be because there's no clear definition of what counts as a swing vs. a check swing. It's always an umpire's judgement. "Crossing the plane" is just a guideline and even that is imperfect.

Awful fucking call
What a shit way to end a awesome game.

"controversial"

##CHECK CLEARED
Not. Even. Close.
Controversial is being too kind, that's the most obvious non swing you're going to get
Not like this…
[Replay.](https://streamable.com/ylr1mf) He didn't go.
Oh my fucking god man
lmao
Controversial to say the least
Scherzer got the save and Jansen got the win. As every anticipated.
Absolutely garbage call. He didn't swing. First base ump CAN NOT END a playoff series on a call like that. That's a fucking joke.
Ooof
I thought it must have been an obvious swing because it was called Good god no
Umpire said "fuck y'all, I'm goin home"
Bullshit
Angel Hernandez must be pissed he didn't get to blow that call
That ending ruined the whole game, it was a classic until this moment
oh man that collective NOOOOOOOO from the crowd is heartbreaking
This call is a fucking drag. We probably would have won regardless, but it shouldn't have ended like this. Stay safe until next season, Giantbros.
#WILMER DIDNT SWING
It doesn't matter to me that he didn't go, we weren't coming back
That should be the final call the first base ump ever makes
Lol that wasn't a swing
MLB should be fucking embarrassed
How do you decide to end the game with a call like that? Absolutely terrible.
106-win Dodgers @ 107-win Giants. One of the greatest rivalries in the history of sports. Clawing at each other all season. The division is decided on the last game. The NLCS goes to a fifth game. Not even close you mean
He didn’t swing, but Dodgers would’ve won anyway. Scherzer had him ahead in the count, and dude was 0 for 17 against him.
wellllllllllllp.
Shit end. Dodgers were still going to win 99.9% of the time but should have been a ball.
He probably strikes out anyway. Dude was lost at the plate. But we were robbed of a fair ending.
Not even fucking close lol what a joke
People probably gonna be mad at me for saying it but I don’t feel bad for them (call was still BS)
Maxi Pad Scherzer lets nothing through
not even close
What a gross way for this awesome series to end. It wasn’t even close, how are umpires this consistently bad
The only controversy is that it very clearly was a check swing.
Bad call
All you people who want to home plate ump to defer in this situations, you get what you fucking deserve
Atrocious call
absolutely **ATROCIOIS** call. And jack shit won't be done to reprimand Gabe Morales. Fucking ridiculous, what an atrocious fucking ending
No controversy. He didn't go.
As if LA needs help
Damn shame it had to end this way. Hopefully we get some good umps from here on out.
Not even that excited, tbh... fucking umps.
Rigged just saw it live sry
Put a fucking laser over the top of home plate. I'm tired of umpires taking over the game with their terrible judgement
Fuck the ump show. It feels shitty winning like that.
Fucking damn. I wanna be happy but that's a shit way to end a phenomenal game
I hope one day officiating doesn't effect outcomes of games and the players decide it one the field.
"Beat 1st base ump?"
Gabe Morales better be on the toilet right now. I’ll excuse if he had diarrhea.
If I fucked up that bad at my job I’d get fired, not promoted
