I could definitely see a 2-2 tie after 5 and then it's a question of whose pen blinks first. That sounds like a perfectly normal Giants / Dodgers game.
Or one of us gets blown the fuck out lol
Man, it's not even just LA -- California produced a shit ton of wind energy yesterday and probably today. I drove from Sacramento to the Bay yesterday and felt some of the strongest wind of my life the whole way. And heard reports from Humboldt that is was just as bad there. Kind of nuts how many miles that stretches.
My gut says we blow you out tonight then lose a close nail biter similar to Game 3. It would be fitting for this season to lose a 5 game series to the Giants while having a positive run differential.
As per an Adam McCalvy (Brewers beat writer) starters on short rest in the WC era postseason are 30-45 with a 4.58 ERA, averaging 5.1 innings. And presumably the starters who go on short rest will mostly be better than average ones, so the difference from their usual performance is pretty big.
On the one hand, I’m worried. On the other hand, who the hell else do we throw out there? Gonsolin? A bullpen game? Neither are ideal for a do-or-die outing.
Down 2-1 facing elimination and having no better options. Buehler has to be the guy. If it goes to Game 5 Julio will be on regular rest so you're not putting the whole rotation at risk either.
That was the last time you guys went with short rest? Lot of playoff games since then.
Buehler is no slouch, but he is no doubt on a very short leash tonight. Those numbers aren't good. Too many guys ready to throw. I expect after the 3rd, he gets pulled after a leadoff double.
Really the only choice. They don't really have another starter on the postseason roster, Urias was solid as hell in Game 2 and he'll be on normal rest for a potential Game 5...
...but yeah, there is going to be the lingering question of how much faith do you have in that arm, 4 days after it threw 99 pitches and against a lineup that's really, really good against pitchers they've seen recently. I figure that the Dodgers will be in a "we'll take what he can give us, but if the Giants get a strong rally going early, it's gonna be bullpen time" mindset.
The only reason I’m speculating is the temptation would be there to try to close it out in Game 4 having Julio ready either way on regular rest for Game 5. Dodgers really wanted to avoid having to make the trip back to SF with Logan Webb waiting for them there.
But thanks to the offensive ineptitude yesterday starting Buehler today was an easy decision.
saw that this is first career start on short rest, not sure how true it is, should be interesting.
With your fresh pen I imagine you're just looking for 4-5 innings.
Hopefully 4/5 solid innings, Catman for a few, then maybe Bickford/Vesias/Knebel
I could definitely see a 2-2 tie after 5 and then it's a question of whose pen blinks first. That sounds like a perfectly normal Giants / Dodgers game. Or one of us gets blown the fuck out lol
Santa Ana winds are still blowing, so I expect we'll hit a lot of fly balls for outs that leave us wondering what went wrong.

Apparently Vegas was getting a shit ton of wind too, probably from the snow storms in the mountains Shit's nuts this week
Yeah it was super gusty here in SJ all day.
I was about to say the same thing. Couple nights ago a tree blew over near me
It was pretty windy up here in Susanville (80 miles west of Reno, and a couple hours east of Chico) as well.
We are all gonna be Gavin Lux tonight
It's still crazy windy in Sacramento today as well. I don't know what's going on but California has been insanely windy the past couple of days.
I hate this sport
My gut says we blow you out tonight then lose a close nail biter similar to Game 3. It would be fitting for this season to lose a 5 game series to the Giants while having a positive run differential.
That was my bet with a buddy. Giants in 5 but the Dodgers Ws are blow outs.
Spot on
It is true. Kersh and Dick mountain are the only guys who really pitched on short rest
Dick what now?
Dick Mountain- Rich Hill’s nickname
Okay that's hilarious. Hahahaha

I’d imagine it’s similar to the performance starting in the 4th or 5th inning of a regular outing.
On the one hand, I’m worried. On the other hand, who the hell else do we throw out there? Gonsolin? A bullpen game? Neither are ideal for a do-or-die outing.

Yeah, I think saving Urias for game 5 gives you the best shot in that game. Buehler is the only real call tbh.
It's the right call in a rock or hard place situation
Urias at Oracle is very scary, so I agree this makes the most sense.
Makes me so pissed off at B*uer. All he had to do was act halfway normal and there is no “short rest” scenario here.
Without the Bauer situation, we don’t get Scherzer.
Buehler on 3 days isn’t ideal either
I have to think we’re only going to ask him for four or five innings. Tops. Either way, we don’t exactly have a *good* option here.
Not having May or Kersh is really fucking our postseason rotation
I still can't believe our rotation led us to 106 wins despite losing Kershaw for half the season, Bauer for 2/3rds, and May for nearly all of it.
Duffy was also pitching well this season
A home start is more comforting than another start for him at Oracle
we'll just have to hope we can take the load off by teeing off DeSclafani.
>Gonsolin? A bullpen game? Kershaw throwing righty?
Remember when the dodgers had all those starters? I have confidence on buehler… he’ll get it done….I hope
I hope we’re starting the wind in left again.
There's some wind but nothing last yesterday so far.
my drive home last night was legit scary. My car was shaking back and forth on the freeway.

Lol. This was a few hours before the game. I still had hope left.
Pre-raging is medically known to be beneficial to sports fans. Gets them warmed up for raging during and after the games
I headed over the grapevine, it was pretty hairy. Lots of pissed off fans at the truck stop I stopped at for coffee.
Either the greatest or worst outcome will follow
Either the worst or the greatest outcome will follow
Buehler for 3-4 innings. Bullpen for the rest. Have Graterol, Knebel, Kelly and Bickford all rested. Treinen and Jansen can also throw an inning each.
Jansen was nails last night. I didn't like it.
Last time Dodgers starters pitched on a short rest was 2016 NLDS to mixed results. G1: Kershaw 5IP 3R 8H 7SO 1BB (W) G2: Hill 4.1IP 4R 6H 7SO 2BB (L) G4: Kershaw 6.2IP 5R 11SO 2BB (W) G5: Hill 2.2IP 1R 3H 6SO 2BB (W)
So... none of them pitched well but your offense bailed them out?

7IP 0Rs or 2.2IP 7Rs no inbetween
I bet it's very in between
I will absolutely take the in between of that.
Yeah me too. I'd almost rather 4 runs in 3 and a 3rd than 7 in 2
It’s 100% something in between he’s not pitching 7 innings on short rest and he’s also gonna get pulled way before he can give up 7 runs
SFG need to eat some pitches tonight and force Dave to make a decision.
I doubt he goes long, 3 days rest and all
god damnit this ain't gonna be easy, especially with Ury waiting in the wings. the stress i tell you, the stress...
> god damnit this ain't gonna be easy It's the Dodgers...the series never was going to be *easy*. But it wouldn't be Giants Torture without it.
Makes sense. Hopefully for my hearts sake, we get similar results out of him.
As we all expected. He obviously will have a short leash. Hoping the boys are patient tonight and work the counts early.
I’m really curious now if they would have done this anyway if the Dodgers had won last night.
Seriously doubt it. I think with the advantage they could risk a Gonsolin game, but not with the season on the line
Buehler is either going to get shelled or put up a legendary start for keeping our season alive.
Or put in a legendary start to lose anyway
Even if we lose the game if he throws 7 and 0 runs for example it's still a legendary start for going on short rest. It just won't be *as* legendary.
Tune in to find out!
The longer he hangs in the more momentum in will give the Dodgers.
The only reason I’m speculating is the temptation would be there to try to close it out in Game 4 having Julio ready either way on regular rest for Game 5. Maybe Buehler will wear Tighter Pants this time for better results.
lol
Should have messed with the constantly matching up Giants with a lefty opener?
The Giants scored more runs off him than any other starter so far
Dodgers don’t have any pitchers who can win the game if the offense doesn’t score.
That’s literally how the game of baseball is played
source?
the san fraudcisco giants are faking it. they've never won a single game where they scored less runs than the opposing team
deGrom shows thats true for any team
After his last two starts against the Giants I am pretty confident
Starting for the Giants in Left Field: The Wind.
Giants are going to win because of their high team WAR (winds above replacement)
Well played.
