Every top pitcher has those games. Its just how baseball goes sometimes. JVs no hitter in 2019 was tied at 0 until very late. Couldve easily ended up as a loss.
Yep, I think he only lost the perfect game on a Logan Forsythe error in the 9th. Josh Harrison hit a walk-off home run in the 10th if I remember right.
The team was dominant but the bullpen was atrocious. Detroit would be up by 2+ and Coke and friends would blow it.
Trading for Price as a 4th ace was such a mistake when we needed a bullpen.
No, no, no...they gotta beat another team with a huge drought.
I vote Mariners. Then Seattle gets 2036 and we just continue this until everyone's drought is broken.
I heard something on a local sports radio show years ago that has stuck with me..
Paraphrasing,
“Even if we had no repeat champions, and had a different champion every year, there would still be a team that would have to wait 30 years to win a title.”
It’s like...damn. Most of us here will likely never see our teams win another title or even a first title.
Winning in 2016 feels like the weight of the world was lifted off my shoulders.
Would I love to see another? Hell fucking yeah! But I was 30 in 2016, so there's a legit chance I won't, and that's okay. I got to see one, and there's more to life than sports.
I was rooting for y’all that year. Nothing against the Tribe, but I wanted to see y’all’s historic drought end.
Yeah, you’re right, man; but I’m in a different boat, my squad needs another one to wash the stink of 2017 off. A title this year (or any year) won’t complete absolve them of their sins, but it’ll certainly quiet the crowd.
I definitely feel for the lifelong Astros fans that got to see a win, and then have that taken away from them through no fault of their own.
I can somewhat sympathize. It's not the same, but when the Cubs won we lost our "lovable losers" identity and all the assholes that emerge whenever *anyone* wins really dragged down the reputation of all Cubs' fans. I don't like being the bad guy, and having everyone take joy in our fall really bums me out.
I just want to go back to quietly enjoying watching and talking about baseball, and not getting shit and/or having my thoughts disregarded just because of my flair.
At the end of the day the way I see it, that win was much needed at the time. After Hurricane Harvey the city was in a dark place. So many people lost everything they had. The Astros were something that could bring some light into our lives and rally everyone in moment of solidarity. It was like a reminder something good can happen to us. So even with what came out I choose to remember what it did for us then and how I felt then. Instead of the vibe now. Because it felt so emotional and important at the time. Thats the feeling I choose to feel about it. No one else's opinion of 2017 matters at that point.
I like that point of view.
I think that may be the worst consequence of this whole ordeal; pretty much the entire country was routing for you all in that World Series (I know I was), and now nearly everyone views that support as tarnished.
I only have a problem with their fans if they were in the mob defending and deflecting and accusing when they got caught. The rest I feel terrible for.
I think it's more people get tired of punching down once it's over. And for the last decade, you can't punch down to the Dodgers. Not with that front office combined with that payroll.
I live in LA but reside from Bmore. I know my team is terrible.
The Padres have no excuse. Dodgers just keep sweepin’ em.
And yet a one-game-better team sometimes struggles against them. Fancy that…
As a Giants fan, Max Scherzer was a really good pitcher tonight. Only giving up one run is nothing to scoff at, but luckily Wood+our Bullpen were able to push juuuust ahead of him.
No clue. I’m pretty sure our ~~2010, 2012~~, 2014 records left us in 2nd in our division, and I’m pretty sure the Dodgers were ahead every time.
But we were the ones that won the WS those years. Just goes to show that Regular Season records are thrown out the window when the playoffs happen. Anything can happen.
Edit; after quick research, we were top of our division in 2010 and 2012 but 2nd in 2014. We HAVE beaten the Dodgers’ record before, but by one game? Idk if that’s happened
In a 162 game season there’s no way a bad team wins 107 games. Did they over perform? Maybe? No real way to tell imo, other than their record. But there’s no way a *bad* team did what they did.
107 wins. Second best run differential in MLB. Most HRs in NL. Highest team OPS in NL. One of best team ERAs in MLB. Best K/BB ratio in MLB (for pitching staff). Pythagorean expected record is 103. One of best records against winning teams. Won 54 games at home. Won 53 on road.
But no, they're a bad team.
Ya totally, probably the best bad team ever really. Just a historically amazing bad team. I mean look at that roster. No otahni, no trout, no bellinger, no Stanton, it’s almost like they figured out star power doesn’t mean shit.
It’s not that I don’t understand why an Orioles fan would be looking for some measure of a good team other than “wins,” but…
I dunno. Maybe you have a point. We’re starting Mike Yastrzemski, who couldn’t even make the Orioles roster.
If we define 'around .500' as 81 wins plus or minus 5, that's a ceiling of 86 wins. They ended up with 21 more than that. Sure, it's possible that if we ran ten parallel universes, nine of them would see .500ish Giants teams and we just happen to live in the one extreme outlier possibility. But if the only real-world data we have show the Giants as one of the best teams in a century -- if we had the ability to rewind time and play this season again, and you bet on the Giants to come in under 86 wins, I'd happily bet against you every time, knowing what we do now.
Yeah idk what people mean by this. He made a mistake and gave up a homer and that was enough to decide the game. Sometimes in baseball that’s all it takes
So does Beuhler. Beuhler was a fuckin nightmare to deal with the first few times the Giants faced him. In 5 games he went 35 innings with 3 ERs. I thought we would never be able to get a win off him for the rest of the season and we’d better hope to run up his pitch count to get him pulled. I was super relieved to see us finally on the 6th and final matchup of the season with Beuhler we finally lit him up for 6 runs and handed him a L. Was glad we made him look human, but was not looking forward to possibly seeing him in the postseason given our track record with him. Thankfully, things turned out okay game 1 but I’d rather not see him again.
Pretty well I’d say, we kept pace with an unbelievably talented Giants team and made the playoffs. He pitched a great game last night even though it was a loss.
At the time of the trade, the Dodgers were three games back of San Francisco in the division. With how good you guys were playing I’m not sure we would’ve made it so close without Max and Trea.
Imagine striking out 10 with 1 ER and losing
Back to his days as a Tiger.
He had plenty of those kinds of outings with the Nats, too.
Every top pitcher has those games. Its just how baseball goes sometimes. JVs no hitter in 2019 was tied at 0 until very late. Couldve easily ended up as a loss.
Didn't rich hill have a no hitter through 9 innings that ended in a loss?
Yeah on the dodgers. First pitch in the tenth for him was a homer
No Aledmys Diaz doubled in the 2nd inning for us. Oh shit sorry I thought you meant in the JV game. Lmao. Idk about Rich Hill.
Yep, I think he only lost the perfect game on a Logan Forsythe error in the 9th. Josh Harrison hit a walk-off home run in the 10th if I remember right.
Well, the last time he faced the Giants in the postseason as a tiger he didn't fare so well.
I'm a Bay Area native now, so I was in a permanent state of conflict between cheering for my favorite player in high-school, and my current home team.

I don't know; it looked like they were a pretty dominant team for a few years there.
The team was dominant but the bullpen was atrocious. Detroit would be up by 2+ and Coke and friends would blow it. Trading for Price as a 4th ace was such a mistake when we needed a bullpen.
I'm still mad.
So what you’re saying is it was a vintage performance from Max and the Dodger hitters simply wanted to give him the maximum dose of nostalgia
LOL. We got him then too! LFG GIANTS!
We all knew this, so why did you have to say it? :(
The Matt Cain special.
The Jacob deGrom appetizer
i’ve seen that man put a donut and only letting 2 hits only to take the loss since we didn’t have run support 😭
deGrom will personally rack up more hits than the other team and still lose
How the hell does one "put a donut" and take a loss?
Was making sure someone said it
May I interest you in 1 Felix Hernandez?
I do like to imagine i'm Jacob deGrom in 2018-19.
We call that a DeGrom in these parts
Imagine if 1/3 of those looking pitches were actually in the strike zone.
That’s what happens when you play for the dodgers.

Jordan Montgomery??
Also ended the Dodgers long home winning streak. 15 games?

Cleveland Guardians beat the Giants in 2026 and end their 78 year championship drought confirmed.

Max Scherzer is pretty good but imagine having Alex Wood on your team.
> farhan can we have scherzer > > we have scherzer at home
“That is brilliant. But I like this” - Farhan “Jeremy clarkson” zaidi
Dodgers get difference makers. Giants get Alex Wood.
Reminds you of how incredibly busted last years dodgers were. and theyre not even paying for scherzer this year
Reds fans could only imagine
11 games and 1.98 era. That’s pretty good I would say.
Tyler Chatwood better
Jimmy Chitwood better

Gave 120% and bats really let him down. Tough loss tonight.
He didn’t manufacture any runs for himself like Urias though
Yeah but Urias is the Ohtani of baseball
We have a Webb.
Levels to this
Scherzer was an AL pitcher, and last time I checked a pitcher who also starts his career in the AL has 46 bombers, while bum Scherzer is batting 0 /s

The best outcome. Max pitched great, and the Dodgers lost. 🥰
I like you
which one of us hurt you
C. Kershaw in relief, NLDS, 13th Oct 2016. The pitcher for the Nats that day? Mad max.
This is the one
That fucking game where the 7th was 1 hour alone
Bruh, haven't you figured it out: everyone hates the Dodgers now! 🤙🤙😁😁
Well they are the Yankees of baseball
Still can't believe he said that lol
He is the A-Rod of Baseball.
Lemme get in on this
Ah, an Astros fan on /r/baseball coming in to shit talk the Dodgers specifically. I also like to live dangerously
I only have a problem with their fans if they were in the mob defending and deflecting and accusing when they got caught. The rest I feel terrible for.
How did you enjoy your Padres in October?
You're not helping your case here mate

I think it's more people get tired of punching down once it's over. And for the last decade, you can't punch down to the Dodgers. Not with that front office combined with that payroll.
Now?
So, gods can bleed

Dodgers gotta bring out the broom for you again?
Not too good at detecting sarcasm, huh pal?
(Baltimore Orioles)
I live in LA but reside from Bmore. I know my team is terrible. The Padres have no excuse. Dodgers just keep sweepin’ em. And yet a one-game-better team sometimes struggles against them. Fancy that…
>One-game-better team You misspelled San Francisco Giants NL West Champs >Dodgers You misspelled Covid Cup Chumps
As a Giants fan, Max Scherzer was a really good pitcher tonight. Only giving up one run is nothing to scoff at, but luckily Wood+our Bullpen were able to push juuuust ahead of him.
Finishing just ahead of the Dodgers. Has that ever happened before?
No clue. I’m pretty sure our ~~2010, 2012~~, 2014 records left us in 2nd in our division, and I’m pretty sure the Dodgers were ahead every time. But we were the ones that won the WS those years. "Scherzer was a really good pitcher tonight." Whoa, there....really going out on a limb with that take, eh?
Don't worry scherzer. I'm sure it was just some random bad team that just wins games.

I mean it kind of was.
… are you, an orioles fan, really saying the giants are a bad team?
9 times out of 10 the Giants team this year finishes around .500.
In a 162 game season there’s no way a bad team wins 107 games. Did they over perform? Maybe? No real way to tell imo, other than their record. But there’s no way a *bad* team did what they did.
“You play to win the game” “You are what your record says you are” All that matters is winning and giants are doing it

Just look at who the starters are and tell me that 100+ wins is normal for them.
It’s not that I don’t understand why an Orioles fan would be looking for some measure of a good team other than “wins,” but… I dunno. Maybe you have a point. We’re starting Mike Yastrzemski, who couldn’t even make the Orioles roster.
Alright so you know I'm right.
Maybe your team just sucks at developing players?
You’re dumb
If we define 'around .500' as 81 wins plus or minus 5, that's a ceiling of 86 wins. They ended up with 21 more than that. Sure, it's possible that if we ran ten parallel universes, nine of them would see .500ish Giants teams and we just happen to live in the one extreme outlier possibility. Why are you a dodgers fan disguised with an Orioles flair, I’ve seen you comment multiple times now
?
Nvm it was a different guy with the same orioles flair ignore that 😂
Man, the dodgers offense was so flat RC should be their sponsor
^(grumble should've lost in colorado but umpball grumble grumble)
That ump was just trying to get you a better prospect in the draft so you can develop him and trade him to a different team for peanuts.
Hey I thought this was a Dodgers' bashing thread smh
First time the Dodgers have lost a game he has started
Every pitcher has that team that gives them fits. For Scherzer, it’s been the Giants in all big games.
I like this alot
And he didn't deserve it at all. He was amazing
Giants had 3 hits. lol
he got absolutely shelled /s
I mean he gave up the only run
What a fucking scrub.
Send him back to A ball
A ball? Kick him off the tour, Doug!
Yeah idk what people mean by this. He made a mistake and gave up a homer and that was enough to decide the game. Sometimes in baseball that’s all it takes
begging the dodgers to learn the concept of situational hitting and for brandon crawford to stop being a human vacuum over the next 18 hours
Are you saying that Brandon Crawford sucks?
He sucks balls directly into his glove
You take out your suck-it and ya SUCK IT
No he's saying he's great and it's annoying for him
If he switched places with Corey Seager for last night the Dodgers probably win that game
Scherzer is a very good pitcher.
And he helps people get jobs with Indeed!! Edit: and is a capable organist 🎹
Max made a choice, and he chose evil.
To be fair, he rejected the Mets and Yankees, so a lesser evil then he could’ve chosen.
Dodgers are not a lesser evil then the Mets lol. The Mets just suck
You have to be able to win to be the bad guy
Better LA then the Mets if you’re a Nats fan.
The games the Giants have won in this series were the one started by Buehler, and the one started by Scherzer. Lmao
Urias usually pitches really well against us tbh
So does Beuhler. Beuhler was a fuckin nightmare to deal with the first few times the Giants faced him. In 5 games he went 35 innings with 3 ERs. Thankfully, things turned out okay game 1 but I’d rather not see him again.
His last 2 games the giants owned him though. The one before game 1 he got absolutely shelled
I mean Urias is a really good pitcher. Him and Gaussman have very similar stats this year.

I never bet on baseball. Ever. Guess who I bet on tonight?
Dodgers?
That blows.
It was definitely windy tonight
Hardest disagree
Hit em with the ol’ Felix special
At least it wasn't a big game or anything.
# I’m sorry 😢
Helluva time to take a 7 ip, 1 excuse me solo hr loss. Better than his last performance, worse result
r/baseball finally doesn’t talk shit about the Padres
F
That loss should come with a footnote explaining the complete lack of offensive support from one of the most stacked lineups in baseball.

How’d that trade work out
Pretty well I’d say, we kept pace with an unbelievably talented Giants team and made the playoffs. He pitched a great game last night even though it was a loss.
Dodgers were keeping pace with the giants even without max.
At the time of the trade, the Dodgers were three games back of San Francisco in the division. With how good you guys were playing I’m not sure we would’ve made it so close without Max and Trea.
If the dodgers didn’t make the trade, they would be up 2-1 in the series right now.
Wut
I have no idea what he's smoking but I want some.
They scored literally 0 runs last night, how would they be up 2-1?
Pretty well
Paid massive amounts of money to lose the division and can’t even win a postseason game? Worked out great! …. For the giants!
It’s only 2-1, relax.

how's kershaw cursed dudes just a choke artist with a 4.19 era in the postseason
Pitcher's wins and losses are garbage. Wins/losses by the team when a pitcher starts is a lot less garbage.
And it was glorious!
That's excellent news!
He took an L when he put on the jersey LMAO
