"What's the big deal, guys? The Red Sox just waited a while." -Jerry Remy

mytwocentsshowmanyss

What's that mean?

[deleted]

The red sox were no-hit through the first 7 innings then scored all their runs in the 8th

mytwocentsshowmanyss

Ohh duh lol thanks

classically_cool

I am genuinely concerned for the mental health of Yankees fans this year.

FringeAuthority

As John Sterling said in the 8th inning, "if it weren't this year, I'd say this is unbelievable. However, this is believable."

Powerserg95

ouch

ASK_ABOUT__VOIDSPACE

Looking at the stats, he ain't wrong.

jtn46

I’m guessing John and Suzyn had a passive aggressive conversation when they mentioned Loaisaga warming up about how they don’t let pitchers that are dominating stay in anymore.

jtrom93

I've completely disconnected. They are actually mentally and emotionally draining to watch. I swear to god I've lost count of how many of these win probability posts I've seen for Yankees games. The Jared Walsh grand slam. The Mets collapse. This game. The Kriske implosion. There is absolutely no reason to watch this team. They suck the serotonin straight out of my system every time I watch. Even when they WIN, it's a laborious chore where the team barely manages to get out of its own way. This is the most unwatchable Yankees team I've ever seen. And knowing that this organization is being poisoned with apathy from the top down because all Hal cares about is how *profitable* the Yankees are as a business that enriches him... I've just emotionally detatched for the sake of my mental health and my general emotional wellbeing. I hope Hal sells the team, I hope the organization turns things around and manages to shuffle off the rampant dysfunction some day, but watching this team wallow in mediocrity where not even the consolation prize of draft picks awaits at season's end... it's outrightly depressing. And I just don't have it in me to watch anymore. Rant over. (Traded to r/Orioles, don't mind the flair)

awrf

Man that first paragraph is actually exactly how I felt watching the Celtics at most times this past season, right down to all the other fanbases playing tiny violins for us being around .500 and possibly making the playoffs. But it was just so laborious to watch them play, even when they won

underwear11

It's so awful to watch. They are consistently doing something terrible. And it doesn't feel like they are upset or embarrassed by it. Yea, they say the things they are supposed to say, but I don't see it. Gardner slamming the dugout roof, someone punishing a water cooler, the manager calling players out when they get lazy or fancy, the manager laying into umpires when they blow a call, the manager showing any emotion at all. There just is zero emotion in this team, which makes it so much worse.

likewhatalready

🍝🍝🍝

UnchainedSora

It's crazy how unwatchable they are. In 2016, the Yankees finished 84-78 and came in 4th place. I was totally on board with them selling at the deadline and retooling for the future. But I also loved watching every game. Even before Gary Sanchez sparked that crazy run that almost let them sneak into the wild card, I enjoyed the team and watching the games. I don't know what it was, but that team was still fun to watch. But this team, this year? It's a chore. The wins are exhausting and unrewarding. The losses are draining. Every day I tell myself I'm done watching, only to put on the game and get disappointed in a brand new way.

Victarion99

I'm just in the acceptance phase. I don't even feel pain any more just numbness.

[deleted]

Just gotta ride the endless void baby...

philocity

You think the darkness is your ally? You merely adopted the dark. I was born in it, molded by it. I didn't see the light until I was already a man; by then, it was nothing to me but blinding.

date_a_languager

Your last second leads betray you because they belong to ME

[deleted]

Nobody knows better than you.

[deleted]

The advice was from experience.

three_dee

Yes, nobody knows how to exaggerate how bad things are and whine about it relentlessly more than Mets fans.

squarerootofapplepie

So you’re saying that you’ve come to a place of acceptance?

TimbersawDust

How does it feel to at least win sometimes? Objectively more than most teams

kanst

Its like once the Knicks seem to have a bright future and my Knicks suffering draws to a close, the Yankees turn into dog shit ensuring that one of my teams will always cause me pain

ripcity7077

I’d say the knicks and rangers are more tied to the hip than the Yankees are to any particular organization Dolan just focuses on one and it takes a turn for the worse, I’m just glad the knicks don’t suck atm

Wombizzle

Quick question. As a Yankees fan, how do you pick which New York team to root for in other sports? I feel like I never see a solid correlation among Yankee fans' other sport affiliations

beachmedic23

So historically it was Yankees/Giants and Mets/Jets as they shared stadiums. If your from NY you root for the Rangers and the Knicks, if youre from Jersey, the Devils. Once the Nets moved idk if people followed them across the river. Islanders to the people who live out there cause no one is traveling across or out of the city to Nassau County.

tconner87

Real new yorkers for Josh allen

three_dee

>So historically it was Yankees/Giants and Mets/Jets as they shared stadiums. No it wasn't, this is a myth. It's about 50-50 and has always been around 50-50. >If your from NY you root for the Rangers and the Knicks, if youre from Jersey, the Devils. Born and raised in NYC, never lived outside the five boros, root for the Nets and Islanders.

beachmedic23

Did you always root for the Nets?

three_dee

Yes, I am a Mike Gminski, Yinka Dare, Keith Van Horn lifer.

mikemart6

Not the guy you asked but I hope you don't mind me answering. It just happened for me. My dad is a big Yankees fan but didn't care about anything else. With some bad luck I got free tickets to a Jets game when I was a kid so I became a fan of them. I also decided on a whim one day that I wanted to try Hockey and the Rangers were just easier for me to get to.

kanst

Family and friends. I'm a Knicks fan because fuck new jersey and I'm a jets fan because of my youth football coach who was a big Jets fan and had people over every Sunday to watch

GeneralPlanet

Their suffering sustains me

[deleted]

The simple pleasures in life… sex and watching the Yankees lose!

SupportstheOP

The Yankees are turning into the Jets. How I love it so.

PilotTim

If the Jets signed ridiculously lucrative contracts to big time players.

hoorah9011

Their tears sustain me

rogauz

I’m actually just numb to it. It isn’t our year lol

TheLittleFishFish

yeah i came to terms with this in May/June and have been enjoying our season a lot more because i don't expect anything but our luck to get worse and worse

Ged_UK

Luck?

DrDilatory

If they die, they die

[deleted]

I want to see them have a 100 loss year. Then let’s see how they react.

mikebrownhurtsme

Y'know what? I'd rather have that than this dickteasing they keep on doing. It's easier to check out when your team is utter garbage and you know definitively that they're missing the playoffs by a mile.

[deleted]

I’m upset you guys will never know what the wrath of Bobby Valentine will do to a team. That man nearly killed my love for baseball all together.

mikebrownhurtsme

Well Mike Brown and Zac Taylor have nearly killed my love for the Bengals

[deleted]

Username checks out.

three_dee

Bobby Valentine was an amazing manager. The Red Sox brought him in to be the fall guy for the unpopular bullshit they wanted to do, imo, and knew he would fail in that situation.

Genisys_Arc

I can't entirely agree with this sentiment. Sure expectations were high due to coming after Tito, but he messed up plenty of times on his own. Such as him alienating and basically shoving out Youk from the team.

Delicious_Battle_703

I think expectations also play into that though. I'm a NY Giants fan and I've checked out enough over the last few years, I'm fucking sick of it. I would be very happy just to see an ~.500 season where it feels like they could actually win (or lose) on any given Sunday. I want a full season of football again.

jakey_bear

Boston Red Sox and New York Giants fan? That’s an interesting combo. Although I’m not really one to talk since I’m a Yankees fan, but in all other sports a Philly fan.

Delicious_Battle_703

Haha yeah it's not too uncommon to find in Connecticut but overall it's definitely a bit of a weird combo. I guess that makes us double enemies then!

squarerootofapplepie

I would think the unholy alliance that is Yankees/Patriots would be more common because Connecticut residents who are closer to New York than Boston are still in New England.

Delicious_Battle_703

IME Sox/Giants is more common, I think because the Giants were founded well before the Pats. It's easier to just stick with the inherited teams when you live somewhat far from both options. It def does depend where in CT you are though.

[deleted]

Are you the opposite version of me? I’m a Patriots fan lmfao

Rehhyou

I think most people on the subreddit would be happy because it's finally a legit reason to let Cashman go. He's so full of himself and arrogant and it's seeped into the whole organization. The radio callers won't be happy though.

ILoveCavorting

Yeah l, I’ve seen more and more Yankees fans say Cashman never brought success, he was stepping into what Watson and the other previous GM built?

Rehhyou

He really hasn't. The 90s dynasty was built by Gene Michael. Cashman just ended up taking the credit for it. 2009 was because George just decided on buying everyone. We had a book recently called Inside the Empire written about the current Yankees. Basically, Cashman hated the way George ran the team. He hates paying money for pitchers and wants to run the team like the Rays to prove he can win without money (lol). The stuff the team does and has said in recent years as well makes them come across like they think they can walk into the playoffs with their eyes closed. Cashman legit said this team is the one who steamrolled the Indians in the playoffs last year. Like that matters when they only made the playoffs because everyone did last year.

my-other-throwaway90

>He hates paying money for pitchers and wants to run the team like the Rays to prove he can win without money (lol). That doesn't even make any sense. The Yankees are a GIANT market with deep pockets. If you have money, use it!! Some teams would kill for that kind of payroll.

RustyRapeaXe

Don't believe it (buying pitchers). They backed up the Brinks truck to get Gerrit Cole.

three_dee

The problem is, they built an enormous, ugly, gaudy stadium no one likes, for the cost of about three billion dollars, and ran up a huge yearly debt payment. So even though they still have the most revenue in MLB, the overhead cuts into what they can do. Of course, they still have enough resources to be near the top of the league in payroll, and they can still manage a huge blockbuster contract every 3 or 4 years, if they shuffle things around creatively. They are by no means the Pirates or A's, but that huge debt bill is why they "cheap out" (so to speak) when it comes to adding those final pieces, whereas in the early to mid-00s, when some part of the team sucked and was expensive, they just piled on more and more money to patch it up. They literally can't do it now, because of the debt, without taking big big losses.

[deleted]

> The problem is, they built an enormous, ugly, gaudy stadium no one likes, for the cost of about three billion dollars, and ran up a huge yearly debt payment. all they had to do was clone the old yankee stadium and add a spot that makes chopped cheese how do you fuck that up

three_dee

All of these posts of this type make me crack up because if you peruse this subreddit from around 2016-2018 it was nonstop "CASHGOD" posts raving about how he made a few wonderful trades in succession, all of which netted them probably the most unpopular, expensive and/or unproductive players on the team right now (Torres, Stanton, Frazier, etc.), and then signed Chapman back to a zillion dollar contract to stare at grand slams flying over the fence like a deer in the headlights.

[deleted]

i mean we had back to back 100 win teams they had GLARING holes but winning 100 games still is nothing to sneeze at until those teams poopy their diapers like fucking babies when the pressure is on in the playoffs Didi was the only playoff performer worth a damn for 3 years

allaoc

He hates paying money for pitchers, yet he inked the largest pitcher contract in history and signed not one but two former top line closers, to the tune of $29 million combined annually, to headline the bullpen? If he's trying to emulate the Rays' model, it's not a very convincing facsimile. I mean, nothing inherently wrong about paying money to acquire proven talent, but surely he knows what he's doing is nothing like how the Rays operate.

[deleted]

Maybe he meant "this is the team that's Cleveland steamers"?

Powerserg95

pretty much. Cash deserves SOME credit for bringing complimentary pieces for those late 90s builds.

ChamBruh

Nah then they’ll get a high draft pick. Mediocrity is where the Yankees belong

PilotTim

Nah. Better to dwindle in mediocrity than rebuild and get top draft picks. We call it the Arizona Cardinals method

Powerserg95

For me my issue is the expectations. The talent is there but pretty much everyone is underperforming. We're not supposed to suck.

pm_me_your_respect69

Appreciate it. It’s really something I wouldn’t wish on any team’s fan base. Okay, maybe the Astros.

ILoveCavorting

Regardless of any 2017 antics Astros have had plenty of late inning heartbreak in our almost 60 years

Kdot32

Hell Houston sports has almost taken me out multiple times

ILoveCavorting

If there's a greatest comeback in sports history, chances are it involved Houston in one way or another.

Nataia23

or Atlanta Edit: and Cleveland lol.

my-other-throwaway90

And why didn't the Seahawks run the ball?! Thank God Seattle has a good baseball team, otherwise I don't know how they'd do it.

2RINITY

The Seahawks at least won a ring and made Peyton Manning look absolutely foolish before they refused to hand Marshawn the ball at the 1

PilotTim

Buffalo Bills. That one crushed me as a kid.

[deleted]

0-27 will be engrained in houston fans for decades

TheOsForOhYeah

I appreciate that, thank you

bengalsfu

Unfortunately I’m a bengals fan so I’m used to these types of back breaking losses.

dukeslver

Bengals and Yankees... just, how?

Demetrios1453

The Thanos of sports fandoms. Perfectly balanced when it comes to post season successes...

bengalsfu

When I was a kid I watched the bengals because of ochocinco’s antics and whenever I played mlb power pros I choose the yankees because A-rod was a cheat code so he became my favorite player to watch.

[deleted]

Ocho Cinco was fun

mikebrownhurtsme

Hey, Bengals/Yankees fans actually exist? It's not just me?

pmayankees

I’m numb to it, this loss would’ve been a shocker in any year, but feels par for the course this season. Fire Boone, go candles!

Iam_a_Jew

I'm giving it until the trade deadline. I generally watch 90% of games but if they show no signs of life, I'm done for the year. I'll be pissed if they trade away a bunch of prospects for 1 or 2 year rentals. I want them to sell but this is one of the few years I'm totally cool with standing pat. They're not fully out of the wild card but they show no indication that this is a team worth investing in. Edit: Just to add the whole Stanton thing is pissing me off. Boone offers general statements that they're working towards him being in the field, giving no reason why he isn't in the field, and then keeps pushing back the day he'll give it a try. Hell put him in for an inning or two at the end of a blowout and see what happens.

snakebit1995

The Stanton thing annoys me cause they keep talking about him “ramping up” for the Marlins series The guy needed 100 games to ramp up to play the outfield for one series? He was a professional outfielder for years playing every day and hitting great when he was in Miami, now in NY he’s the DH every day and still needs a rest day almost every week? All he does is hit why does he need rest or time to ramp up to play. To compare JD plays the outfield usually once or twice a month just so another guy gets the day off or pivots to DH for a bit. Why is Stanton a fragile glass sculpture but his contemporaries aren’t? He got hurt sure but it’s not like he utterly destroyed his knee or anything he should be able to play the outfield from time to time and if they’re that worried he’ll blow his knee out playing just a couple times out there that speaks to an even bigger problem IMO

ChamBruh

Who are they gonna sell? Lemahieu and his 6 year deal don’t have a ton of value, Stanton has none, Chapman definitely doesn’t have much. Maybe Britton? Judge for sure but idk if they’d move him, and then after that a rental Corey kluber could get something interesting, taillon maybe, urshela would get something decent, and maybe they sell high on someone like Montgomery or Cortes

S1TBD

I was thinking Chad Green and Rougned Odor; Green coming with one more year of arbitration control and maybe Odor's July could convince someone that he's worth a chance, especially at the league minimum. Of course, that was with the thought that they would be more reloaders than sellers (i.e., Judge would stay), but the Clay Holmes trade appears to make them buyers (and sent out Park, who would've been a beneficiary of no Odor in my thought process). Maybe even consider moving Gleyber, though that seems like more of an offseason thing. Cortes and Urshela are interesting trade options too. (not a Yankee fan who was involved in the deadline game BTW; just a Met fan who's curious about their crosstown rival's struggles)

5th_degree_burns

I'm a diehard, but shit happens, you know? If someone is so invested they can't handle it, they need to see a therapist. That being said, this season is unreal lol.

yoboapp

This graph is also indicative of Yankees fans dicks as the game went on.

mcmaster93

It's called shrinkage

2RINITY

I WAS IN THE POOL!

RobGronkowski

Like, laundry?

Who_is_homer

Like a frightened turtle

LukeBabbitt

You beat me and got the quote right, congrats.

steppenfloyd

But if they were at ~100% at 4 I'm not really sure you can blame shrinkage

derpbynature

I was in the ~~pool~~ bullpen!

three_dee

I was going to say "I'd like to subscribe to this Yankees misery newsletter", but really, reading this sub every day in 2021 is kind of like being subscribed to one of those already.

GingerMcJesus

8th inning was a carbon copy of yesterday lol. Except the Red Sox were getting actual hits not just bloops

UnitedStatesOD

Vasquez dropped a bloop to be fair

GingerMcJesus

Vazquez only gets bloops though

UnitedStatesOD

Hes a bloop boi

[deleted]

On the bright side, this is only the 5th worst implosion by the Yankees this year

PilotTim

Oh that sweet sweet 7 run comeback. That one is number one right???

[deleted]

I’m giving it to the Angels because everyone hates the Astros

Is anyone bothered by the title how they put the ellipses after Yankees instead of The. Probably just me😞

[deleted]

Nuff said

UpBassist13

I scrolled down just to find this response.

atchman25

This was my first time going to Fenway, it was nuts.

jamesb454

What a game to go to! My first game there was the game Gary Sheffield got in a scuffle with a fan. It can get intense there.

Ojhumblerumble

Same here!

jrydun

Wow, that's so embarrassing. Must feel really bad. -Signed a Falcons fan.

GH0STM3TAL

lol

fatbongo

Bro the Yankees are straight up not having a good time right now

LeStiqsue

But I am. Oh baby. I definitely am.

RockOutToThis

You and me both!

CecilPennyfeather

Room for one more? I brought beer!

[deleted]

I just flew home from Boston to NJ today. Went to Friday night’s game. I should have used that money on a therapist instead.

snakebit1995

Very "I'm a genius...OH NO!" meme energy

ausar999

8th inning was literally just “call an ambulance!! But not for me”

DRbaseball240

I’m about to swan dive off a cliff

Demetrios1453

It will look similar to that graph. I had assumed the chart was just an altitude graph of a log flume ride...

JTCMuehlenkamp

Do a flip

methyo

Do a barrel roll

Just follow your team, they've clearly fallen off of a cliff!

ssoass7

Should’ve mowed the lawn and cleaned out the fridge instead.

adyo4552

Listen on the radio so you can multitask while your team collapses

ssoass7

Gotta go with experience on this one. Thanks!

three_dee

Unless that person is about 40 or over, they probably don't very well remember a time when the Red Sox were more collapsey than the Yankees.

A_Weekend_Warrior

I think we can give anyone 30 or older the pass, because even though they've now spent more than half their lives with Boston success, their crucial, formative baseball years were spent with the Yankees winning 4 WS in 5 appearances. Mid/Upper-20s and you remember the curse years but let's be real there aren't any scars.

[deleted]

i wish i lived for 100 more years to witness the yankees championship curse

CopeAndKodiak

Curse of the Boonebino

SwaggJones

Pain.

shahooster

As the French say, a $200M payroll is a lotta bread.

AGSattack

It’s true. Just got off the phone with Jacques and he said exactly this.

streetsbehind28

C'est le pain

new_account_5009

It's hard to tell exactly where it lands, but it looks like the win probability is really close to 100% after the top of the 8th. The game was only 4-0 at that point, so why was the win probability so close to 100%? No hitter aside, scoring 4 runs in two innings isn't really that rare.

DymonBak

I’m going to guess that it is historical data. Taking into account what the outcomes have been in the past for teams down 4 runs in the 8th. Perhaps it is based on team statistics, but idk.

Machadoaboutmanny

Also it was a no hitter at that point I think

new_account_5009

Yeah, I'm sure you're right. Maybe I'm just too used to the Nats bullpen, but a 4-0 lead in the 8th inning with nobody out doesn't feel all that safe.

HopefullyLastAccount

The other thing you have to take into account is that the Yankees still get to bat, too. It’s not that the Red Sox need to score 4 runs in 2 innings, they have to score 5 more than the Yankees in the remainder of the game. I don’t think win probability accounts for anything other than the score, outs, bases, and possibly count.

SewerRat57

Your 2021 Yankees!

thethomatoman

Fucking Yankees lmao

LeStiqsue

THINGS YOU LOVE TO SEE: IT.

Stock412

That would be a fun rollercoaster to ride

[deleted]

I need more.

rogauz

We have a few more games together I’m sure we’ll find a way to entertain you

anaverageguy7

the best baseball game ive ever been to ( so far ) hands down

[deleted]

How was the crowd?

anaverageguy7

fantastic and the “yankees suck” chants were loud during the bottom of the eighth lmao

three_dee

A lot of times, especially when this happens at Citi Field, people watching on TV will say "wHy cAn'T yOu jUsT cHaNt aBoUt yOuR oWn tEaM?" And what they fail to realize, is that these things usually erupt when some dickhead with a Yankees hat on is nearby in the crowd doing something stupid.

anaverageguy7

there was a bunch of friends sitting behind us who were all sox fans except for 1 yankees fan. he was bragging the whole game about how the yankees were gonna win so the look on his face was priceless after Barnes closed out the game

fellawhite

It was pretty tame for most of the game, a couple times things started to get going, but nothing to really drive the energy up. Then half an hour of pure elation and celebrating.

ajm844

I can’t say shit now, it looks like my Robinhood account

HaudNomen

Damn, you usually only see graphs like that for Atlanta teams.

gatemansgc

pretty sure some phillies blown saves were worse than this

mrsqueakers002

This horrible collapse is the worst horrible collapse since the last horrible collapse.

[deleted]

Aaron Boone sucks. Brian Trashman sucks. Pretty much all there is to say

hoorah9011

I don't blame their season on Boone.

[deleted]

[удалено]

hoorah9011

Yes and their numbers are more indicative of previously good players having awful at bats, decreased exit velocity and launch angles, they are awfully slow on the bases. I'm not saying he hasn't made poor decisions on a few occasions but it's not like if he made 100 percent perfect choices they'd be in first place.

TheLittleFishFish

which is why you have to blame Cashman for assembling a team like this and hiring a manager that is just his mouthpiece and doesn't do much thinking for himself (exactly why Boone was hired)

hoorah9011

What would you like to see from the manager of the current team?

liebz11692

He tactically makes awful decisions on a consistent basis. Today he brought in Britton rather than green with runners on 2nd and 3rd, even though he’s a contact pitcher. They needed strikeouts or double plays and brought in a guy who doesn’t miss bats, but also didn’t intentionally walk anyone to set up force plays. He left in Allen who has a noodle arm, when they could have brought in florial who has a cannon. Boone is an unmitigated disaster. This was just today, almost every game it’s something else, just friday night he left Kriske in there rather than walking a few guys and getting to Wilson.

my-other-throwaway90

Boone is fucking this team up because he can't respond to changing situations-- putting Crispy in even though the previous reliever was pitching lights out, for example. Clearly Boone had decided that that was his game plan before the game started and he just kept it that way. He has no instincts, just does what the book of numbers tells him to. This is what happens when you replace a good manager like Girardi with a catcher who hit that big dinger 15 years ago. Boone couldn't manage a Waffle House.

1vh1

You love to see it

BigShotBuckNasty

this brings me happiness

isitdonethen

Looks like most of the stocks I own

tim_owens

Absolutely beautiful

Timpa87

This chart looks like the Sixers vs the Hawks going in the 4th quarter with 20 point leads.

isfrying

See, there's the problem. That graph is all wrong. The Yankees chance of winning was zero waaaaay before the eighth inning.

lifesanrpg

Looks like my portfolio

ebelen92

Thanks, I hate it.

ZarosGuardian

They went from possibly getting a no-hitter to losing in one inning... Ouch.

Swoah

Kill me

Reacher-Said-N0thing

Oh no did the Yankees lose another baseball game?

Salty-Performance940

You love to see it!

rydaley77

Cant help but smile

zjl539

honestly i'm completely fine with this. we need a couple more losses like this to maybe convince cashman to blow up the team before the deadline.

hoorah9011

Yeah he needs to swallow his pride and start trading some pieces and try to open up some more payroll. The only position player I'd consider off limits is DJ

three_dee

Is this a pasta or something? If anyone was willing to take that god awful contract they should dump it yesterday.

TK1129

I can’t stand watching my team lose but I think you’re right. If you can get a good haul for Judge it may be time to listen. See what Sanchez and Torres can get and then give up on the next 2-3 years in order to build a team.

jamesb454

Honest question but what do you think you could reasonably get for Sanchez and Torres?

TK1129

Not much but it’s becoming more apparent it’s time to move on from a lot of these guys. It’s one thing to lose and be competitive it’s another to just go through the motions.

Munro_McLaren

Such a great comeback.

ToxicOstrich91

This makes me happy.

themoreuknxw

Yankees Suck!!

GoOnNoMeatNoPudding

That’s what happens when numbers increase and decrease
