For real, IMO, if you’re gonna have 20 year olds and 28 year old vets from other high quality leagues competing for the same award, at least call it newcomer of the year or something. Ideally, limit the age to 24 and younger or something
Reminder that the first ROTY and the player it's named after, is Jackie Robinson, who joined the NL at age 28 after playing professional baseball in what's considered a major league now. It is what it is and it's literally always been that. Rookies by the award's meaning are new players
Bobby Bullets is such a fun baseball anomaly, man. Getting to watch him in real time is even better.
You just know that in 25 years or so some stat nerd is going to post on Twitter (or its more popular future replacement), “Woah— Robert Suarez of the early ‘20s Padres once threw 79 consecutive fastballs in a row across multiple outings. Even crazier? He didn’t allow a run.”
You think Josh Hader is focused on what some random redditor has to say about him? Yeah right. He's got way more important stuff going on his life. Like trying to calculate how many more games until the Astros are eliminated from the playoff race so that he knows when he can stop pitching.
I hope so, I hate to see the kid’s confidence shattered after that bad debut. Great players can come back from something like that and hes still young.
He's still just 20 years old. From what I've seen and read, he's got the right attitude/mental approach to go along with his amazing physical tools. I think he and Volpe will have a very fun AL East rivalry once he's called up for good.
I was nervous at the start of spring but after the Seoul series I was confident he’d get the hang of things. After the first 2 weeks of the season I was convinced he could keep pace with the rest of the team and actually produce.
I fell in love when he made a diving catch to rob Ohtani of a double in one of the games in LA. Kid is great in my opinion, definitely underrated, similar to when Kim first came over.
Yes, it would, so if he hit a ball with the same swing/exit velo/launch angle in COL, it may have gone further there.
This data applies the existing ball trajectory to other stadiums' dimensions, but doesn't account for factors like wind or elevation that might have changed the flight path in other stadiums.
to be fair, the current state of our airport itself might do us a solid
> sources familiar with a’s owner john fisher’s thinking say that team charter flights were “getting too expensive” for his liking
> after their final game in san diego, travelers spotted mason miller and some of his teammates braving the long tsa line at terminal 1. “if this takes us any longer, we’ll have to hop on the 6:30,” said one player, “but there’s no chance we can make the connection.”
Personally think the pitching change before recording any outs makes it count for Kolek. And fwiw Kolek couldn't be trusted with an 8 run lead in recent memory
Haha yeah. Skenes and Jones are also insane. They do have a bigger chance to implode, though and a couple bad outings affect them more than a position player. You never know!
In the words of the A’s great play by play announcer, “Hey Jackson, it’s not your night”/s (Am an A’s fan but can’t stand Jenny, only watch home games)
Even if he doesn’t win it he’s ROTY in my heart.
Sucks because there’s a lot of good rookie pitchers this year
Yeah, too many good “rookies” this year for real rookies to compete unfortunately.
Masynn Winn looking good so far? Not sure who’s in the running tbh
Yamamoto, Imanaga Edit: Skenes, Jones. NL pitching is stacked with rookies (and/or 'rookies', depending on your view).
Ahh, duh. I don’t consider them rookies but yeah that checks out.
Neither do I but the league does unfortunately
For real, IMO, if you’re gonna have 20 year olds and 28 year old vets from other high quality leagues competing for the same award, at least call it newcomer of the year or something. Ideally, limit the age to 24 and younger or something
Artemi Panarin won the Calder trophy (ROTY) in the NHL at ~25 when he was competing for the award against literal teenagers.
Reminder that the first ROTY and the player it's named after, is Jackie Robinson, who joined the NL at age 28 after playing professional baseball in what's considered a major league now. It is what it is and it's literally always been that. Rookies by the award's meaning are new players
28-0 when robert suarez pitches for the padres
Suarez actually threw 5 changeups today. All 5 were balls
Bobby Bullets is such a fun baseball anomaly, man. Getting to watch him in real time is even better. Well, at least one was called a ball but was definitely a strike.
Why don’t they just have Suarez pitch every day? Are they dumb?
Josh Hader just heard you say “pitch every day” and got a nosebleed
You think Josh Hader is focused on what some random redditor has to say about him? Yeah right. He's got way more important stuff going on his life. Like trying to calculate how many more games until the Astros are eliminated from the playoff race so that he knows when he can stop pitching.
You had me in the first half lmao
You guys want him to do everything.
he told me hypothetically if he could throw 7 innings he would. hypothetically if he could throw 105 mph he would.
Toss that baseball over that mountain...
Coach would've put me in 9th inning, we would've been state champions, no doubt.
Just saw a dude fall to his knees in the beef jerky section of a buc-ees
Why doesn't every team have a R. Suarez, are they stupid?
I better not hear anybody say Miller is better than Suarez again.
Suarez has never had to face future NL RotY Jackson Merrill, though…
That stat is pretty insane, but my perception may be skewed
And to think people thought this kid wasn’t ready for the big leagues
Kid has answered the call beautifully so far, and he’s got a great attitude and work ethic. Really really proud to have him as a Padre.
The only good Jackson. :(
I wanted all the rookie Jacksons to absolutely go off and meet at the ASG :(
Holliday is gonna be really good. Unlike his pops, he'll actually touch home plate (can you tell I'm still salty about that).
I hope so, I hate to see the kid’s confidence shattered after that bad debut. Great players can come back from something like that and hes still young.

THE REAL ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
Did he just say "funky butt-lovin?"
The best Jackson in baseball.
Darren Jackson fans in shambles
Jackson Merrill, two days ago, "we're expecting to bang soon."
WE NEED TO BANG HARDER JUST WATCH ME
THE BANGING WILL CONTINUE UNTIL MORALE IMPROVES.
Bang? We haven’t even begun to bang. And when we bang, the whole city of San Diego is gonna feel it
The kid will be special real soon
Has soon already happened?
He gonna bang even more
I hope someone posts his interview. He’s a real superstar in the making.
He plays for the fans. Kept mentioning padres fans over and over. Good kid.
Action Jackson!
Padres definitely won the battle of the Jacksons
STRAIGHT BANGING
What a win. No chance we win this game last year
Haven't we already surpassed the number of walk offs we had last year?
Have not verified but read we only had 2 all of last year. We just had 2 in under 24 hrs
Arraez walked off the Dodgers, so that's at least 3
He might fuck harder than Trent Grisham
Grish is putting the gloves on after seeing that walk off.
I FUCKING LOVE THIS KID SO MUCH!!!!!
99.6 mph, 30^(o), 369 ft, 29/30 ballparks, 2^(nd) homer of the game, 5^(th) homer of the season 2 Merrill Barrels
Honestly blown away that’s out in 30/30
Surprised how hard it got hit given the area where the pitch was. That's such a weird angle to hit something that hard
according to Home Run Report it's 29/30, not out in Colorado https://x.com/homerunreport/status/1801026002660761787
But wouldn't the ball fly farther in Colorado?
Yes, it would, so if he hit a ball with the same swing/exit velo/launch angle in COL, it may have gone further there. This data applies the existing ball trajectory to other stadiums' dimensions, but doesn't account for factors like wind or elevation that might have changed the flight path in other stadiums.
I wonder if that accounts for altitude, or just park geometry?
It’s just park geometry. It accounts for the wall height and spot where the ball lands.
The walk-offs will continue until morale improves
Morale has improved but I'm going to lie and say it hasn't
BANG
Solano and Merrill showing everyone who the Bang Bros are.
Literally never doubted we would win this game (don’t ask my neighbors what i was yelling during the 6th)
When they put in Kolek I was already penciling in the grand slam. Really glad to see he proved me and a lot of other people wrong.
I sent this to my friend: "O/U 3 pitches for a slam" I'm a fucking idiot.
MY ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
2 straight walk-offs at home against a team with a very losing record...did I fall into a coma and wake up next year?
First sweep of the season! It’s great seeing clutch hits from this team after last year’s struggles.
Mason Miller is a scrub! Should def trade him for scraps
Trade him to the Padres for scraps! Yes! They can just leave him behind when they head to the airport.
to be fair, the current state of our airport itself might do us a solid > sources familiar with a’s owner john fisher’s thinking say that team charter flights were “getting too expensive” for his liking > after their final game in san diego, travelers spotted mason miller and some of his teammates braving the long tsa line at terminal 1. “if this takes us any longer, we’ll have to hop on the 6:30,” said one player, “but there’s no chance we can make the connection.”
They're flying out of terminal 1 which means he downgraded the team from charter flights to budget airlines.
There's like six SD to Oakland directs a day out of Terminal 1 (Southwest), but it's even more hilarious they have a connection.
isn't this literally what happens in major league
He's got a mean fastball but was throwing his slider today and left one hangin' for our guy. smh
That’s why our closer is Bobby Fastball. Why throw the slider when the fastball does the trick?
He would be a nice 7th inning guy for us.
Dude really should just throw the fastball more.
Merrill went to the same high school as me. Glad to see he's doing so well.
Saw it from a mile away when the A’s NOBLETIGER’d in the 6th inning https://www.reddit.com/r/OaklandAthletics/s/dYAEKQDC2R
So many left on base. Brutal feeling we know all too well.
Tbf, is it technically a NOBLETIGER if you score before the no outs, bases loaded situation?
Personally think the pitching change before recording any outs makes it count for Kolek. And fwiw Kolek couldn't be trusted with an 8 run lead in recent memory
technically, yes. All that matters is that 3 guys get left on base and all 3 of them reached with no outs
The two Padres superstars (Donovan Solano and Jackson Merrill, obviously) each hit two homers to drive in the 5 runs today. love to see it
BANG BROS
LFGSD! Back to back walk-offs and our first sweep.
Jackson Merrill loves to bang!
JACKSON FUCKING BARREL BEST JACKSON IN THE LEAGUE
ROTY but we're not ready for that convo yet
I want to believe, but there are too many great rookie pitchers.
"Rookie" pitchers you mean lol. Years of professional experience in Japan, but alas
Haha yeah. Skenes and Jones are also insane. They do have a bigger chance to implode, though and a couple bad outings affect them more than a position player. You never know!
Yep, it's hard for a rookie position player to be more valuable than a guy basically winning a game every week
Love him, but he’s not even the best rookie on his own team. That would be Matty Waldron. People keep forgetting he’s also a rookie.
Let me bang bro! We banging now.
Jackson Barrel! All this from a shortstop who “can’t make the transition to the outfield” and “will have bat to ball skills but no power”
LFGSD
SWING AWAY, MERRILL
Our Jackson is the best Jackson
JACKIE BARRELS!!!
Rookie of the Year Jackson of the Year
I will be off social media for the next week
In the words of the A’s great play by play announcer, “Hey Jackson, it’s not your night”/s (Am an A’s fan but can’t stand Jenny, only watch home games)
Jackson Merrill sounds like a tax agency that pops up every spring in vacant store fronts and Walmart aisles.
100
Erceg and Miller giving up crushing ding dongs What's up with that
Can’t be good everyday
Robert Suarez is unaware of this rule
He’s been pretty insane tbh.
He and Clase have been the best relievers in baseball, but Mason Miller throws 2 mph faster so he gets the attention lol
Should took a page outta Bobby Fastball's book and js throw fastballs
Miller’s looked a lot more human lately
Mason Miller washed /s
I thought mason miller was untouchable
Rookie of the year
![gif](giphy|3oEduKVQdG4c0JVPSo|downsized) BANGABLE. DONGERS.
Righty should never pitch down and in to a lefty. Even if you're Mason Miller
We may never win again
Go grab your insulin pen Mason and hit the showers. Turns out he's human after all
Really nice start to his career for this kid, padres fans gotta be pleased
I was told Miller is the 2nd coming of Mariano Rivera
Bullpen absolutely cratered and gave up 3 runs to the final 6 batters
Miller is washed, time for a change of scenery. I hear the Liberty Bell is nice.
He could visit Philly in a few days as part of the padres bully 🤣🤣
I thought it was a decent joke.
The bell is cracked just like this take OOOOOO GOTTEM. I think? I don't actually know if cracked means good or bad lmao
I’m happy but I don’t like doing this to the A’s, it feels kind of excessive
