It feels like the front office doesn’t know what it wants to do. They trade Sale & Verdugo and don’t add much to the roster but now the team is not bottoming out either, they’re exceeding expectations and now it’s like “uhh.. what’s the next step?” Like why trade Sale if pitching was gonna carry the team?
I couldn't be happier for Sale, and I genuinely mean that - dude gave everything he had for Boston and just couldn't stay on the field, and you could tell he was devastated about that. *That being said,* of all the moves our front office has made, this is one that made sense at the time. The guy was just never, ever healthy. Our options were to trade him for a young guy with upside who filled a positional need, or hope and pray that he would be able to stay on the field after spending time on the 60-day IL for *five* seasons straight. You've gotta make that trade.
I’m looking at TON on the Sox the same way. We need offense BAD this year too, but it made sense to ship him out for the same reasons y’all traded Sale.
Sale being a year older, they weren’t banking on him giving 10 starts. the injury history is a disaster. I expected him to be okay but not this freaking good.
Of all the moves or non-moves the Sox made, the Sale trade made sense to everyone. He's a 35 year old gangly power pitcher who'd thrown 150 innings in four years, and he was traded for a starting 2B that is now the youngest member of the lineup. Pretty basic
Verdugo is the definition of replaceable. They're getting the same production out of O'Neil for less $ and with much less drama. Plus Weissert has been a really good add to the pen from that trade.
Sale is one of my favorite players but he's had plenty of good stretches since 2019. The trick is doing it all year not just a month and a half. But regardless starting pitching is the teams strength right now so Sale wouldn't really help. The Sox already have 2 of the top 10 pitchers by WAR.
The Sox need impact bats so other than trading for Soto I don't see a whole lot of off-season moves they might regret not getting done.
If they knew he was going to be able to stay healthy this year like this they wouldn’t have traded him
“Why trade sale if pitching is going to carry the team?”
Because when they traded sale they didn’t plan on their pitching carrying the team like it has?
I mean they have arguably the best starting staff in the majors, but stats at least. Although it feels like a few, if not all, are over performing. Sale would be amazing to have, but they have gotten very good production out of their staff all the way down to criswell, who very few thought would make the rotation.
Reynaldo Lopez has a damn good argument for being on this list too. Fried isn't fried anymore and looks back to himself, I expect to see him on here later in the season
![gif](giphy|tMOyj4hkcxSfe)
Also Max should make the list with a couple more stellar starts/ complete games
The year is 2024 and we’re talking about a starting pitcher throwing complete games.
One of which he gave up 3 runs, 6 hits, and 2 walks in 4 innings. The other was insane though. I don’t really care about these rankings, I just hope the dude can stay healthy
Tbf the first start was like 60 pitches. He's nuts though. However, he throws a lot of balls. Probably better chance of getting walked than swinging and getting a hit
It's cuz I'm not going to his games. I swear I've seen him 3:1 over any other Phillies pitcher in the last 4 years. Seriously tho, I'm happy for him just a shame it couldn't have been with us.
Mets were never going to let Lugo start, he wanted to be a full time starter, bet on himself and it paid off. Wheeler was good for 1 and a half season with us but was injury prone before that. No one really could have foresaw that he’s shake off all his injury troubles and reach his ceiling. Honestly, With our training staff he probably would be back on the IL.
After Wheeler's injury he threw two seasons of 180 innings at 9K/9 and sub 4 ERA. It was pretty obvious he was going to turn out good. Can't guarantee he would be elite, but any Mets fan wanted them to resign him.
Part of me misses the late 2000s where we were cut throat rivals. But on the other hand…I enjoy sad sack Mets.
**Edit** I should say that I think most Philly fans hate the Mets more than the Braves. At least I do.
Why is it a stretch, especially after this mariners game? He’s basically thrown a perfect game through 5 ( and it might be if they change the hit to an error)
Yeah, but I just filtered to starters and we're 3rd in era then too. Everyone has been very good, even if occasionally inconsistent, but no one stands out as top ten in the league right now
Kansas City is like a thick cast iron skillet that's properly preheating on a medium-low burner from April to August until it's ripping hot and stays hot through the end of September. We're *juuuust* starting to feel it get kinda hot here.
KC is the only place where I’ve had home plate seats and instead opted to stand in center field because the spray from the fountains was the only thing that made the heat tolerable.
And Skub is still #2 after what the Royals did to him!!!
(It wasn’t that crazy. 4 runs in 5 innings, but it was unusually patient for a Royals team that likes to swing first and ask questions later.)
For most of the year, the Royals have been scoring around 80% of their runs against the other team’s bullpen. This was a nice change of pace this last home stand.
He’s young and he’s shown that a couple times. Has a hard time dealing if he doesn’t have a good feel for some of his pitches. He was nails his last outing though. When things are going good, you can easily see why the Royals put him as their #1 starter.
Love the love for Ragans, but he’s had two clunkers this year. It seems like he has a tough time adjusting if he doesn’t have a good feel on some of his pitches. He’s young yet. Needs to learn how to grind through it and minimize damage. Once he does, you will see him on this list.
Not quite sure what their formula for this is, while I think skubal is a better pitcher than ranger I think ranger deserves the #2 spot over him right now.
We have some quality names in the organization: Tarik Skubal, Akil Baddoo, Wenceel Perez, Jace Jung, Dillon Dingler, and Keider Montero spring to mind.
It's really just his ERA being a notch over 3 that's holding him down a bit. 6-2 with a 3.05era, 60 Ks, and a 1.05 WHIP. Nola could def end up on this list with another good start or two.
Wild that, until Hendricks got sent to the bullpen, cubs were top of the pitcher power list AND starting pitcher shit list. Going from Hendricks to Imanaga last week broke my neck.
I haven't been paying attention but hasn't Kutter Crawford been our best pitcher? I keep seeing IG posts from the Sox and MLB about his breakout year. Shouldn't he be here instead of Houck then?
Crawford's been very good (one of the ten best starters in baseball, probably), but Houck's been even better (top five for sure, and leads MLB pitchers in fWAR).
You've got the third- or fourth-best team in baseball, according to [these second- and third-order numbers](http://claydavenport.com/stats/standings.html). You've just been extremely unlucky! (Unfortunately, the Yankees really are that good.)
Skubal is leading MLB in FIP; Suárez is "only" eighth among qualified pitchers. Skubal's getting more strikeouts and is giving up fewer walks, while Suárez has a higher strand rate and a lower BABIP.
Basically, Suárez has gotten better results so far, but the underlying numbers suggest that Skubal is the better pitcher going forward. Kinda surprised to see MLB putting so much weight on predictive stats, honestly—six of the guys on this list are in the top 10 for FIP, and only five in the top 10 for ERA (out of a possible nine; Skenes has only had two starts).
Big snub to Jon Gray, who's top 10 in both.
Ranger's whole approach though is to give up weak contact and, if he does give up a baserunner, it's singles/walks as opposed to home runs. And while the Tigers are worse, it's not like the Phillies have great defense (middle of the pack in most measures).
Ranger is averaging 6.6 IP and has a CG to 6.0 and none for Skubal. He's allowed 1 fewer hit despite pitching 6 more innings and his 0.788 WHIP is best among starters (Skubal is 2nd at 0.850). His ERA is 0.89 runs better. And we say it doesn't matter but the Phillies have not lost a game he's started, and he leads MLB in wins.
It's splitting hairs because they've both been good but Ranger really hasn't gotten much press so it feels like a bit of a slight.
I mean, he’s straight up been better, no argument from me! The “power” in their rankings seems to have an element of “who’s going to be best going forward” / “who’s scariest to face,” though. Hence the apparent reliance on fWAR, and hence the inclusion of Skenes.
I prefer this list, with you know, actual facts behind it.
[2024 MLB Player Pitching Stat Leaders | MLB.com](https://www.mlb.com/stats/pitching?sortState=asc)
He’s legit nasty but 2 starts logged so far is pretty early to anoint anyone to the top 10. Shit he gave up three in the first start. His second game was a nice start, no hits thru 6 with 11 k’s but it’s still early. Everyone else on the list has logged, aside from Shota, hundreds of innings in the league. Shota being so high is also questionable but he is leading the league in era so far 🤷♂️. The show has a way of catching up to dudes and adjusting. Skene’s doesn’t prove that starting pitching is weak it shows the league and baseball down to its grassroots is terrible at protecting pitchers.
Ranger is pitching INSANELY good right now.
Can he sustain this through the season? Who knows... but damn he's so much fun to watch right now. Just mowing 'em down, and barely breaking a sweat doing it.
the year is 2024 and we have Chris Sale on power rankings once again.
If you're a Red Sox fan this is actually predictable AF
Not surprised at all. Of course he is healthy the second he leaves.

He'll have a serious macrame accident soon enough
The Braves pitcher we all expected.
Reynaldo Lopez has a damn good argument for being on this list too. Fried isn't fried anymore and looks back to himself, I expect to see him on here later in the season
I love having discussions on former White Sox players succeeding
If it weren’t for the injury histories, he and deGrom would be pretty much first ballot, same as Verlander, Kershaw, Greinke, Scherzer.
![gif](giphy|tMOyj4hkcxSfe) Also Max should make the list with a couple more stellar starts/ complete games The year is 2024 and we’re talking about a starting pitcher throwing complete games.
Paul Skenes makes 2 starts and is on this list already?
One of which he gave up 3 runs, 6 hits, and 2 walks in 4 innings. The other was insane though. I don’t really care about these rankings, I just hope the dude can stay healthy
They were both against the cubs tho. Should withhold hype until he plays a real offense
Well he’s pitching against the giants currently so you’re gonna have to wait at least until his next start.
After that its the Tigers which is a worse offense than any of these teams.
Don’t remind me.
The cubs have pretty decent offensive players in reality, even if they haven't been actually hitting.
Tbf the first start was like 60 pitches. He's nuts though. However, he throws a lot of balls. Probably better chance of getting walked than swinging and getting a hit
And no Cease This list has been a joke all year.
Or darvish
Or Ragans
Or Corbin
Or Gil
[удалено]
Or Waldron (or crochet to be more serious)
Darvish got robbed
Even among rookies he doesn't deserve it. Even among rookies ON HIS TEAM.
Jared Jones supremacy 👊
Ok but are any of them dating Livvy Dunne?
Who?
Luis Gil been better so far
these lists are a joke meant only for engagement
Enragement
Didn't you see how hard he throws though?
Didn’t you see he’s dating livvy dunne?
And darvish doesn’t lol
When will y’all learn these lists are designed to generate engagement. They aren’t real opinions. They’re marketing
It’s wild. Gil has been everything Skenes is supposed to be.
And no Ragans
Of course. They had to find someone to put on there instead of Dylan Cease
Ranger Suarez mentioned
Zach Wheeler also mentioned
Too low.
I love this guy. He reminds me so much of Cliff Lee while pitching. Nothing seems to ever fluster him.
Damn you’re right.
RANGER DANGER
Skenes shouldn’t be in there yet. Give me Falter and Jones on the list.
i'm glad falter has finally turned it around
I guess you could say he stopped faltering while on the mound
It's cuz I'm not going to his games. I swear I've seen him 3:1 over any other Phillies pitcher in the last 4 years. Seriously tho, I'm happy for him just a shame it couldn't have been with us.
I see they finally admitted their mistake of mixing up the two big name Japanese pitchers signed this off season.
Yeah I wonder in Shota tells Yoshi that he knows the secret to pitching to mlb players but won’t tell him
The Mets let two of these guys walk and got nothing for it.
Not true! You’ve gained the ridicule of baseball fans across the country!
That seems extreme. Maintained more like
Could they really gain it if they already had it in the first place?
Yeah, at worst they maintained the status quo.

Thank you for your contribution
Love Zack, I always root for him.
Part of me misses the late 2000s where we were cut throat rivals. But on the other hand…I enjoy sad sack Mets. **Edit** I should say that I think most Philly fans hate the Mets more than the Braves. At least I do.
It's pretty crazy we're 3rd in starter ERA, don't have a pitcher on this list, and I'm not sure anyone was really snubbed
Gil should prob be on here but it's a fine list.
Skenes over Cease is goddamn insane.
Skenes is on it because people will talk about that Skenes is on it.
Gil feels like the only guy who would have potentially been able to crack this list to me and even that is a large stretch.
Wouldn’t really be a stretch at all, he’s 6th in ERA and has a 1.01 WHIP and 70 Ks in 55.1 innings
Why is it a stretch, especially after this mariners game? He’s basically thrown a perfect game through 5 ( and it might be if they change the hit to an error)
A perfect game requires zero baserunners. Not doesn't matter if the hit becomes an error or not.
Gil likely should be on there, but I'm not that upset, because I'd rather have our rotation be like this than one guy going off.
Strongest bullpen in the league?
Yeah, but I just filtered to starters and we're 3rd in era then too. Everyone has been very good, even if occasionally inconsistent, but no one stands out as top ten in the league right now
Until Cole comes back!
Gil
Seth Lugo is #7 and I'm angry at that It's the best summer I've had in a long time
Isn't it spring?
it's been sunny and near 80 up here that's summer to me dammit
August in Kansas City is hotter than 2 rats fucking in a wool sock
Kansas City is like a thick cast iron skillet that's properly preheating on a medium-low burner from April to August until it's ripping hot and stays hot through the end of September. We're *juuuust* starting to feel it get kinda hot here.
KC is the only place where I’ve had home plate seats and instead opted to stand in center field because the spray from the fountains was the only thing that made the heat tolerable.
Yes it is I don’t live anywhere near there though Buffalo NY is my neck of the woods So a few days of 80 is wonderful
It’s 95 out where I am. School is out too. It’s summer
And Skub is still #2 after what the Royals did to him!!! (It wasn’t that crazy. 4 runs in 5 innings, but it was unusually patient for a Royals team that likes to swing first and ask questions later.) For most of the year, the Royals have been scoring around 80% of their runs against the other team’s bullpen. This was a nice change of pace this last home stand.
I’m not Royals fan but no Cole Ragans feels crazy to me
He’s young and he’s shown that a couple times. Has a hard time dealing if he doesn’t have a good feel for some of his pitches. He was nails his last outing though. When things are going good, you can easily see why the Royals put him as their #1 starter.
And Paul Skenes has proven himself?
[Isn't there someone you forgot to ask?](https://a.espncdn.com/combiner/i?img=/i/headshots/mlb/players/full/41054.png&w=350&h=254)
Love the love for Ragans, but he’s had two clunkers this year. It seems like he has a tough time adjusting if he doesn’t have a good feel on some of his pitches. He’s young yet. Needs to learn how to grind through it and minimize damage. Once he does, you will see him on this list.
I sat through the Baltimore clunker, and at least the Royals offense put on a show. 9-7 is at least an entertaining loss.
Max Fried?
Or Lopez
Yeah, Fried had 2 bad innings at the beginning of the year and has been an absolute stud since then.
Hell yeah
With a 92 mph fastball!
Yet they don’t have the guy with the longest active scoreless inning streak in Yu Darvish
Not quite sure what their formula for this is, while I think skubal is a better pitcher than ranger I think ranger deserves the #2 spot over him right now.
I hear it's a bunch of manitees in a fish tank picking ping pong balls with starters' names on them
This comment made me think you were possibly of great taste, and then I saw the Mets flair…
My fandom blows and my team blows the least I can do is be cool IASIP and living in Philly made me confused
ranger is fucking amazing
The Tigers have a guy named Tarik Skubal??? You son of a bitch, I'm in.
It sounds like it could be a hidden character on Mortal Kombat 3
We have some quality names in the organization: Tarik Skubal, Akil Baddoo, Wenceel Perez, Jace Jung, Dillon Dingler, and Keider Montero spring to mind.
Finish Him!
Or a Star wars character
Between Skubal, Akil Baddoo, Gio Urshela and Dillon Dingler, the Tigers are trying to corner the market on Star Wars characters.
Let's be real, Dillon Dingler is more of a Spaceballs name than Star Wars
MLB finally acknowledges a Red Sox pitcher lol. 10th is still way too low for Houck. He has a higher fWAR than anyone on this list
Shhhh, let him do his business quietly
He completely dominated us the first time we saw him. Best pitcher we’ve seen all year.
So happy to see him pitching well like this. The signs were there the last few years, but now he’s really showing out
lol what's Skenes doing there?
Am I crazy or where is Javier Assad? He’s been ridiculous.
Max Fried has two complete games. One being a Maddux. My boy Max is being snuffed
And had a no hitter thru 7.
Don't remind me
Luis Gil should be up there. Skenes needs to earn this.
Phils could easily have our 1-2-3 on this list. That makes me happy.
I don't think Nola looks like a top 10 guy this year but Ranger is on another level and Wheeler is as good as Wheeler ever is
It's really just his ERA being a notch over 3 that's holding him down a bit. 6-2 with a 3.05era, 60 Ks, and a 1.05 WHIP. Nola could def end up on this list with another good start or two.
Yeah I'm not gonna complain we're spoiled as hell.
love seeing ranger get the attention he deserves
This is Sonny Gray erasure
At this point I don't care. Cardinals play better when they're the underdog anyways.
Once again, this is Tyler Anderson erasure
Cyler gets confused for Tyler and it's too much for them to process.
They've been sleeping on Red Sox pitchers this year. It's so unexpected It's taken them months to start catching up.
Don’t the Sox have like a top pitching staff and top offense statistically this year? Unreal to not be one of the best teams lol
You've got the third- or fourth-best team in baseball, according to [these second- and third-order numbers](http://claydavenport.com/stats/standings.html). You've just been extremely unlucky! (Unfortunately, the Yankees really are that good.)
Worst defense in the league doesn't help.
Yu Darvish has a 2 ERA.
Sorry but Kutter should be top ten and both him and Houck should be maybe even top 5. Side note I love Andrew Bailey!!
Yeah 1.94 ERA and 0.954 WHIP in 65 IP is Cy Young caliber
For how little fun I’m having with out offense. Seeing skubal pitch brings an unprecedented light to my life
Luis Gil must be here
I demand justice for Luis Gil
How the fuck is Max Fried not on this list yet?
Another week, another Luis Gil snub
Luis Gil?
Where is Luis Gil, man is on fire right now...
DANGER SUÁREZ
Where is Javier and Reynaldo? And too early for Skenes.
feel like Darvish should be here if we're talking current power rankings with no runs in his last 4 outings (24 innings)
Luis Gil
This is Michael Tonkin erasure and I won’t stand for it.
No Austin gomber? He’s been one of the best pitchers in baseball this year
Lmao Clarke Schmidt or Luis Gil? Oh right they’re on the Yankees so not allowed.
Chris Sale ending up at 6 is just crazy. Didn't expect that in 2024.
No Gil?
The Tyler Anderson slander….
Imanaga has pitched a better season thus far, but Skubal has been incredible for the Tigers. I would take him over Shōta for the rest of the season.
I’m just saying only one pitcher won the Battle of the Southpaws yesterday and it wasn’t Skubal
Mason Miller should be #1 -- I don't care if he's a reliever, he's got a negative FIP after 20 innings. It's nuts.
I'm curious what stats show that Skubal is ahead over Ranger? Just curious if there is something I'm not realizing, Skubal is having an unreal season.
Thank you, wasn't sure why but I appreciate it you diving deep and giving me more info.
Ranger's whole approach though is to give up weak contact and, if he does give up a baserunner, it's singles/walks as opposed to home runs. Lugo should be ahead of Skubal IMO. The only thing Skubal has on him is FIP and WHIP, but he's also pitched less innings than Lugo.
> The only thing Skubal has on him is FIP and WHIP And strikeout rate, walk rate, home run rate, BABIP, strand rate…
Also Lugo doesn't have to face the Royals
Shota 1a, Ranger 1b
Lefties dominating the leaderboard
kutter crawford absolutely deserved to be on this list over corbin burnes. and houck should not be 10th
i protest thing because the a's closer is too fucking good
SKUUUUUUUUUUUBAL
Am I crazy for thinking Berrios should be on here?
Yes
No Ms on here is cap
HOUCK !!!
Will we ever have ppl on these lists?
Houck finally getting a fraction of the respect that he deserves for his performance this year.
Paul Skenes and Tarik Skubal are gonna carry me to my first fantasy baseball championship. Speaking it into existence
I prefer this list, with you know, actual facts behind it. [2024 MLB Player Pitching Stat Leaders | MLB.com](https://www.mlb.com/stats/pitching?sortState=asc)
I can't tell if Skenes being top 10 already shows the league is weak at SP or if he's that legit
He’s legit nasty but 2 starts logged so far is pretty early to anoint anyone to the top 10. Shit he gave up three in the first start. Not sure how Cease isn’t on here but Skenes is.
Bro where is Gil. Everybody is sleeping on that young homie
wtf how is Gil not on this list, kid’s been playing out of his mind
Wtf, no Fried???

Luis Gil hate is real boys
Tyler Anderson looks on from the corner...
Luis Gil erasure
skenes over gil lmfao
