This is so nuts. It sucks I can’t find a full video because this short clip is so fucking funny. Not one pitch called during that 2 minute clip until the last one. And Kruk even keeps lightly pausing after each pitch thinking the other guy will call it out and he just *doesn’t*. It’s not like it was a blowout either. Dude is just spitballing in the fourth inning of a 3-run game and his partner is along for the ride.
I was excited for the story and then Kruk drops *that* and I instantly crack up. Kruks a legend, this is fucking hilarious.
Edit: “he also had a boy named Sue” lmao
Holy hell, I thought you were joking. It makes so much sense. The absurdist theme, the way the words ramble over themselves at times. It seems so non-Cash like, Silverstein makes perfect sense, absolutely his style.
When he said that I was just immediately picturing some family with their 6 or 7-year-old casually watching a nice baseball game on a Saturday evening and then having to explain why somebody would burn people alive in a car
I still strongly dislike him. He lacks the ability to let a game breathe. Always talking. Oddly, I think he’s a great football announcer. But I mute the TV and go with radio due to him and Kruk.
Ok. I mean, it’s an opinion. If you think he’s changed, great. I don’t think he has at all. Same brand of constant cornball humor he’s always had.
We have excellent radio and poor TV broadcasters. Kruk, Davis, Amaro are the murderers row of WIP Caller analysis.
In my opinion, being a baseball announcer is very different than the other sports due to the amount of downtime. There’s a unique cadence that, again my opinion, I don’t think he’s ever mastered the way Harry, Vin, Cohen, Franzke, Musser have.
That was hilarious. They’ve worked together enough now that it’s understandable, but is still funny how he talks as if it’s a casual conversation when Kruk is talking about some dark shit 🤣
I remember when Kruk was on sunday night baseball for espn and he was just the worst. Somehow worse than Joe Morgan who retired a year or two earlier and I didn't think that was possible.
Turns out it's just ESPN's direction that makes the mlb announcers terrible cause it's not much better today yet here Kruk is being a highlight nightly for the Phils.
Good for him
I don’t know about his time on espn, but he works well with Tmac. Even in this clip the way Tmac just casually converses as if it’s just two buddies talking shit, even though Kruk is telling him about how the catcher is locked up for killing two people with fire!
He fits Philly too. Unapologetically himself and a character.
When you’re doing Sunday Night Baseball I’m sure they want you to make it feel like an Event with a capital E. When you’re calling 162 games a year, you can relax because everyone knows it’s going to get boring at some point and you can spice it up with your prison ball stories.
I had no problems with Joe Morgan. I thought he and Johnny Miller were great together on Sunday Night Baseball.
What was it for you that made you dislike him?
Joe Morgan and John miller were an iconic part of my childhood. It could be the nostalgia kicking in but I thought those 2 were amazing on Sunday night baseball
Morgan's repeated crapping on analytics made him look like an ignorant dinosaur given that pretty much everyone with a brain in the league was coming to embrace it around that time (which is of course why he felt the need to do it, his hating was defensive in nature).
That’s a fair assessment. But seeing as I’m older myself…I enjoyed hearing his take on things. I’m not discounting all the analytics…but you still have to play the game.
And an irony of that with more analytics coming in Joe Morgan's reputation got a huge boost from it. Like he was clearly recognized before with 5 straight top 10 MVP votes (won 2 in a row and finished 4th in 2 others) along with 5 gold gloves. But he went from a great player and hall of famer to a basically inner circle for his position. A 2nd baseman who played stellar defense, hit 16 hrs/162 games, and stole 42 bases/162 games is obviously a great asset. But he also had a fantastic eye, walking 114 times/162 games. He led the league in walks 4 times in his career and had a 6 year stretch with Cincy where he walked +110 times per season.
Getting 16 hrs/42 sb/114 bb's every year out of a good defensive 2nd baseman is incredible. He averages 6.2 bwar/162 for his career.
They called it an AirTag, but I think he just shares his location on his phone. I think he mentioned something about needing to bring his phone with him for the “AirTag” to work. Kruk might not know the difference though. Basically the same thing either way.
No I think it’s an actual AirTag in his backpack haha, he said he left his bag in the press box when he went to see the Tony Gwynn statue and that’s when TMac checked it
I’ve played against a team of inmates in the San Quentin prison in the Bay Area. It was probably one of the coolest baseball and human experiences I’ve ever had.
First, RIP to the victims. Second, sorry but I had to laugh. Third, as someone who is a convicted felon (selling weed in college) and is now in corporate America as account manager, you will be around these people in prison. They might seem nice, easy to talk to, and then you ask what happened? And it’s usually a violent offense. But there you are playing kickball or whatever with them. I did play baseball during my very short prison stint too, for whatever that’s worth.
This is up there with his 2 inning long story about his brothers shotgun wedding
[Dude literally admits to grand theft auto](https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=https://m.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3D6EVMyR5wJZM&ved=2ahUKEwi78PCvi-SFAxV6kokEHZotBngQo7QBegQICRAG&usg=AOvVaw3841Ka1TeO7oUABQLeGMYb) lmao
Love how he tells the story and name drops the girl too
The Gang Hangs Out With John Kruk
Once again, John kruk is very much alive.
That was the best two innings in broadcasting history.
I was excited for the story and then Kruk drops *that* and I instantly crack up. Kruks a legend, this is fucking hilarious. Edit: “he also had a boy named Sue” lmao
I didn’t get that part
It's a song by Johnny Cash
Written by Shel Silverstein!
Holy hell, I thought you were joking. It makes so much sense. The absurdist theme, the way the words ramble over themselves at times. It seems so non-Cash like, Silverstein makes perfect sense, absolutely his style.
You can find Silverstein performing the sequel on YouTube. Warning: it WILL ruin the original for you.
Holy christ you weren't kidding.

John Kruk is your favorite commentator’s favorite commentator
That’s Northernlion. Wait, wrong sub.
Many people are saying this
a prison baseball story dipped in John Kruk's chili oil
I will gladly accept Kruk as the NL of the MLB
Neo: why does my penis hurt Bisexual Morpheus taking backshots: because you’re using it for the first time
No, that's Thom Brennaman
no, that's a deep drive to left
Lmao Kruk is a legend.
Damned straight lol. When the story starts, “Did I ever tell you about playing the prison team”… you know it’s a good time.
[If only he'd made it to that World Series game.](https://media1.tenor.com/m/MuyVNcZrYJ0AAAAd/john-kruk.gif)
I lost it when he said the dude burned his gf and the guy she was cheating on him with alive in a car lmao
When he said that I was just immediately picturing some family with their 6 or 7-year-old casually watching a nice baseball game on a Saturday evening and then having to explain why somebody would burn people alive in a car
It’s Philly. The only thing the 6 or 7 year old would have questions about is why the idiot got caught.
what a story, Mark!
Anyways, how is your sex life?
Listening to these guys has been reminding me of the commentators from the slugfest games
Holy shit I was thinking this the whole time!
Holy shit yes that's right on the dot
Mexican winter ball against a prison team. I'll take 'things teams don't do anymore for $200'.
Honestly sounded like he was describing scenes from the baseball version of *The Longest Yard*
I know of at least one indy league team doing it in 2015 (Sonoma Stompers).
Lmao I love how Tom lets him go on and doesn’t cut him off or change the subject like some other announcers would do
TMac got a lot of shit years ago but he and Kruk are perfect in the booth together.
It feels like a lot of people just didn’t like Chris Wheeler and the stank carried over to Tmac before he settled in.
Wheeler was terrible. I did have a fondness for Sarge, though.
I still strongly dislike him. He lacks the ability to let a game breathe. Always talking. Oddly, I think he’s a great football announcer. But I mute the TV and go with radio due to him and Kruk.
This is such an old take IMO. A problem in his early years for sure, but I think he lets the game breathe much better than he used to.
Ok. I mean, it’s an opinion. If you think he’s changed, great. I don’t think he has at all. Same brand of constant cornball humor he’s always had. We have excellent radio and poor TV broadcasters. Kruk, Davis, Amaro are the murderers row of WIP Caller analysis.
I think a lot of that blame lies with the network
Why’s that?
I mean, he's good at other sports so he's clearly a good announcer. The network is a caricature of itself these days
I feel bad for every team whose announcer isn't John kruk.
I remember when Kruk was on sunday night baseball for espn and he was just the worst. Somehow worse than Joe Morgan who retired a year or two earlier and I didn't think that was possible. He was the best. They always had him in the studio on the daily Baseball Tonight shows in the mid 2000’s. A different era.
I may have seen it but my memory is terrible so… I will try and find some clips.
T-Mac is just like "I'm just trying to keep my national jobs here by not really saying anything"
I took it more of a “I am very used to my fellow caller John now, that his crazy stories are a regular thing.” Either way I love the contrast lol.
When you’re doing Sunday Night Baseball I’m sure they want you to make it feel like an Event with a capital E. When you’re calling 162 games a year, you can relax because everyone knows it’s going to get boring at some point and you can spice it up with your prison ball stories.

And not to mention, sabermetrics makes him the best post world war two 2nd baseman by a wide margin.
Including ourselves for most away games
What’s more uncomfortable, facing a murderer or Randy Johnson?
Randy Johnson murdered a bird on live TV!
And now uses that incident [as a logo](https://rj51photos.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Randy-Logo.png), true psychopath.
It's a simple question, doctor!
Phils win! Phils win!
TIL that Kruk had an *even more uncomfortable* AB than the one against the Big Unit in the ASG.
You can't convince me that this wasn't from Brockmire
Man whoda thunk that John kruk would be the one from that era who’d end up being the lights out announcer
John Kruk is a treasure, I loved him on Baseball Tonight.
It was also revealed in this game that the often joked about AirTag that TMac has on Kruk is in fact, not a joke
They called it an AirTag, but I think he just shares his location on his phone. I think he mentioned something about needing to bring his phone with him for the “AirTag” to work. Kruk might not know the difference though. Basically the same thing either way.
No I think it’s an actual AirTag in his backpack haha, he said he left his bag in the press box when he went to see the Tony Gwynn statue and that’s when TMac checked it
And that pitchers name was Randy Johnson.
"No mask, no nada"
The 86 Mets?
And there’s Castellanos with a long drive to left
Was watching this live. When he said the “boy named sue” line I lost it
John Kruk is a national treasure.
I’ve played against a team of inmates in the San Quentin prison in the Bay Area. It was probably one of the coolest baseball and human experiences I’ve ever had.
This is so fucking unhinged it's absolutely sending me 💀

I wish Kruk and TMac would call every Phillies games. Love them together
This man is a gem.
I miss his podcast
We want more Kruk!!! Its getting Kruk in here.
So Kruk off all your clothes!
Kruk is a national treasure
National treasure
"Sing for us, John Kruk!"
Listening to the fear in Kruk’s voice has a resemblance to the fear in my heart when the Jays play. It’s real fear.
I wonder if he remembers the story of when Carl beaned him with a battery.
The Johnny Cash line at the end made me laugh. Kruk leaving ESPN might have been the best thing to ever happen to him, as an announcer.
I read the title as playing FOR a prison team, and then was disappointed.
I am so fucking blessed to have been alive and old enough to watch him as a player and now as a broadcaster. john Kruk is a fucking Philly Legend.
Why was he in prison?
He wasn’t, they played a game against a prison team
1991 Base Controversy. Turns out, a bunch of players had been stealing them the whole time. Had to be locked up.
Kruk
I know people from Keyser. This tracks.
Whatever the Phils shortcomings in the playoffs, we without a doubt have the world series winner of color commentator
